This user’s guide describes the characteristics, operation, and use of the TMAG5115 high performance Hall-
effect latch evaluation module (EVM). This EVM is designed to evaluate the performance of the TMAG5115. This
document includes a schematic, printed circuit board (PCB) layouts, and a complete bill of materials (BOM).

1 Overview
The TMAG5115 is a family of high-performance, wide input voltage, low-output delay and low-jitter Hall-effect
latch sensors. Designed for system challenges where higher magnetic precision is needed, each device variant
exhibits a different magnetic sensitivity. If the field strength is greater than BOP, then the output is pulled low.
If the field strength is less than BRP, then the output is released. When the applied magnetic flux density
exceeds the magnetic release point (BRP) threshold, the device output returns to a high voltage state. The
TMAG5115EVM comes prepopulated with TMAG5115B1 variant for out of the box evaluation. Other variants can
be sampled from www.ti.com. Table 1-1 lists the different device variants in the TMAG5115 family. TMAG5115
devices can operate with a VCC range of 2.5 V to 26 V and is available in a standard SOT-23 package.

2 TMAG5115EVM Hardware
The TMAG5115EVM is a simple to use platform for evaluating the main features and performance of the
TMAG5115. The EVM features a couple of methods of device evaluation, the first being quick visual feedback to
the user in the form of LED indication. When the device's BOP and BRP thresholds are crossed, their respective
LED lights turn on and off. An alternative way of evaluating the TMAG5115 is by using the EVM to commutate
a brushless direct current (BLDC) motor. The TMAG5115EVM follows a standard form factor for the Hall-effect
sensor boards found in various NEMA17 BLDC motors. This means the EVM can be used as a direct drop-in
replacement for these boards and can be used to evaluate device performance in this way.
Features:
• Standard sensor control board dimensions for drop-in replacement in most NEMA17 42-mm BLDC motors
• Includes a handheld D3X8 magnet for manual testing
• Provides LED feedback to quickly determine the output state from the TMAG5115
3 EVM Operation
The following instructions are to set up and use the TMAG5115EVM:
3.1 Quick Start Setup
1. Power up the EVM using a variable power supply:
a. Set the power supply voltage to the desired setting between 3 V and 12 V. Do not turn on the power yet.
b. Connect the power supply V- terminal to the black GND wire connected to the EVM.
c. Connect the power supply V+ terminal to the red VCC wire connected to the EVM.
d. Turn on the power supply
2. At power up, the device default state is high and the LEDs stay in the off state. Place the handheld D3X8
magnet over one of the three TMAG5115 devices found on the EVM. Depending on the polarity of the
magnet, you may see the LED turn on or remain in the off state.
3. Rotate the magnet to the opposite orientation. If the threshold is met, the device should have the opposing
reaction than it did in the previous step. A South field over the BOP will turn on the LED while a North field
less than the BRP threshold will turn off the LED. See Figure 3-1 for the magnetic response of a Hall-effect
latch.

3.2 BLDC Motor Operation
The TMAG5115EVM is intended to be a direct drop-in replacement for the Hall-effect sensor modules found in
NEMA17 BLDC motors (see Figure 3-2). The EVM features three functionally independent circuits, one for each
of the TMAG5115 devices on the PC board, with each sensor spaced 120° apart. The three sensors and the
specific 120° spacing yield what is commonly referred to as a six-step commutation sequence, a common motor
commutation algorithm for sensored motor control. The TMAG5115 reacts to the magnetic field generated by
the permanent magnets located on the rotor of the magnet. As the motor spins, the three Hall sensors create a
distinct state every 60° electrical degrees. Each unique state lets the motor controller know the motor’s position
and determine how the stator coils must be excited within the BLDC motor to keep the rotor spinning. Figure 3-3
shows a typical six-step control scheme example.

3.2.1 Replacing Sensor Control Board With TMAG5115EVM
This section lists steps for replacing the sensor control board found in the NEMA17 BLDC motors with the
TMAG5115EVM:
1. Remove the backplate from the motor. To remove the backplate, remove the four screws found on the
backside of the motor, opposite to the motor's shaft. See Figure 3-4. After the screws are removed, the
backplate of the motor should come loose.

2. Remove the three screws that currently hold the sensors to the bottom of the housing and remove the board.
See Figure 3-5.

3. Place the TMAG5115EVM inside the housing. The round plastic base will ensure proper alignment to the
motor housing. Return the screws that were removed in the previous step and tighten. See Figure 3-6 for
TMAG5115EVM alignment inside the motor.

4. Align the base so that the wires of the sensor board and the wires of the motor are all facing the direction of
the opening on the motor enclosure. Return the screws that were removed in Step 1 and tighten. See Figure
3-7.

3.2.2 Connecting TMAG5115EVM to a motor driver
The following connections must be made from TMAG5115EVM to a motor driver or motor controller in order to
commutate a motor:
1. Connect the black GND wire to GND or the V- connection to the power supply.
2. Connect the red VCC wire to VCC or the V+ connection to the power supply.
3. Connect the blue wire (Hall A) to the phase A connection.
4. Connect the green wire (Hall B) to the phase B connection.
5. Connect the white wire (Hall C) to the phase C connection.
6. No external pullup resistors are required with TMAG5115EVM because the necessary pullup resistors are
populated on the EVM board.
a. You can remove the pullup resistors on the TMAG5115EVM if your motor driver includes pullup resistors
for the Hall-effect sensor inputs.
3.2.3 Example Using MCT8316ZTEVM
Texas Instruments offers several motor drivers that can be used to spin BLDC motors. This section explains
what connections must be made to spin a motor using the MCT8316ZEVM:
3.2.3.1 MCT8316Z Overview
The MCT8316Z is an integrated three-phase gate driver IC with sensored trapezoidal control for motor drive
applications. The device provides three integrated half-bridges and a sensored trapezoidal algorithm capable of
directly driving a 3-phase brushless-DC motor. The algorithm is included in the IC, therefore there is no need to
create your own commutation algorithm to spin a BLDC motor. The MCT8316Z simply takes the inputs of the
Hall-effect sensors and uses them to drive the motor appropriately.

3.2.3.2 MCT8316ZTEVM Quick Start Guide
The MCT8316ZTEVM requires a power supply source, which has a recommended operating range from a 4.5 V
to 35 V. To setup and power the EVM, use the following the sequence:
1. Connect motor phases to A, B, and C on connector J13.
2. Connect Hall sensors to J11 and use HALL_PWR_SEL jumper J11 to select the supply as 3.3 V from buck
or use an external supply on connected to J12. Ensure the MODE resistors are set correctly to use the
appropriate Hall sensor configuration as described in MCT8316Z datasheet.
a. If using the boards pullup resistors, populate J8–J10 with shunt jumpers to enable pullups. Connect the
single-ended inputs to only the HPx pins on connector J11. This is the default of the MCT8316ZTEVM.
3. Ensure resistors are populated in H/W variant resistors for desired hardware settings.
4. DO NOT TURN ON the power supply yet. Connect the motor supply to VBAT or VM and PGND on
connector J7.
a. To enable reverse polarity protection and Pi filter, connect to VBAT.
b. To disable reverse-polarity protection and the Pi filter, connect to VM.
5. Select J3 to 5V_USB and J5 to 3V3COM to power MSP430 from USB power supply.
6. Connect the micro-USB cable to the computer.
7. Turn the potentiometer fully clockwise to set the motor to zero speed upon power up.
8. Turn on the motor power supply.
9. Use the potentiometer to control the speed of the motor and the switches to disable the motor driver, change
the direction, or apply a brake to the motor. Optionally, use the GUI (as shown in the MCT8316ZTEVM
User's Guide) to monitor real-time speed of the motor, put the MCT8316ZT into a low-power sleep mode,
and read status of the LEDs.
