CuttingUnitCharacteristics
Thedualknobbedknife-to-reeladjustmentsystem
incorporatedinthiscuttingunitsimpliestheadjustment
procedureneededtodeliveroptimummowingperformance.
Thepreciseadjustmentpossiblewiththedualknob/bedbar
designgivesthenecessarycontroltoprovideacontinual
self-sharpeningaction-thusmaintainingsharpcuttingedges,
ensuringgoodquality-of-cut,andgreatlyreducingtheneed
forroutinebacklapping.
DailyAdjustmentsofCuttingUnit
Priortomowingeachday,orasrequired,eachcuttingunit
mustbecheckedtoverifyproperbedknife-to-reelcontact.
Thismustbeperformedeventhoughqualityofcutis
acceptable.
1.Lowerthecuttingunitsontoahardsurface,shutoff
theengine,andremovetheignitionkey.
2.Slowlyrotatethereelinareversedirection,listening
forreel-to-bedknifecontact.Ifnocontactisevident,
turnthebedknifeadjustingknobsclockwise,oneclick
atatime,untillightcontactisfeltandheard.
Note:Thereelmustcutonesheetofpaper,when
insertedatarightangletothebedknife,atbothends
andthecenterofthereel.
Note:Theadjustmentknobshavedetents
correspondingto0.022mm(0.0009inch)bedknife
movementforeachindexedposition.
3.Ifexcessivecontact/reeldragisevidentitwillbeeither
necessarytobacklap,refacethefrontofthebedknife,
orregrindthecuttingunittoachievethesharpedges
neededforprecisioncutting(RefertotheToroManual
forSharpeningReelandRotaryMowers,FormNo.
09168SL).
Important:Lightcontactispreferredatalltimes.
Iflightcontactisnotmaintained,thebedknife/reel
edgeswillnotsufcientlyself-sharpenanddull
cuttingedgeswillresultafteraperiodofoperation.
Ifexcessivecontactismaintained,bedknife/reel
wearwillbeaccelerated,unevenwearcanresult,
andqualityofcutmaybeadverselyaffected.
Note:Asthereelbladescontinuetorunagainstthe
bedknife,aslightburrwillappearonthefrontcutting
edgesurfacealongthefulllengthofthebedknife.Ifa
leisoccasionallyrunacrossthefrontedgetoremove
thisburr,improvedcuttingcanbeobtained.
Afterextendedrunning,aridgewilleventuallydevelop
atbothendsofthebedknife.Thesenotchesmustbe
roundedofforledushwiththecuttingedgeofthe
bedknifetoensuresmoothoperation.
Note:Overtime,thechamfer(Figure22)willneedto
beregroundasitisonlydesignedtolast40%ofthe
bedknifelife.
