tem delivers cutting-edge drive technology and efficiency.
It has been designed and manufactured with the utmost care and with a special fo-
cus on convenience, user-friendliness and safety, and has been extensively tested
before delivery.
Please take the time to read this operating manual carefully so that you can use the
system properly and enjoy it for a long time.

1 Introduction
1.1 General information on the instructions
These instructions describe all major functions and activities of the
DEEP BLUE system.
This includes:
■Provision of knowledge about structure, functioning, and characteristics of the
DEEP BLUE system.
■Information on possible dangers, their consequences, and on measures to avoid
a hazard.
■Detailed instructions for execution of all functions throughout the entire life cycle
of the DEEP BLUE system.
These instructions are intended to make it easier for you to become familiar with the
DEEP BLUE system, and to use it safely in compliance with its intended use.
Every person using the DEEP BLUE system should read and understand the instruc-
tions. For future reference, the instructions must be kept easily available and close to
the DEEP BLUE system at all times.
Ensure that you always use the most recent version of the instructions. The most
recent version of the instructions can be downloaded on the Internet www.torqee-
do.com from our website under the Service Center tab. Software updates may result
in changes to the instructions.
If you follow these instructions carefully, you will be able to:

The inboard motor has been developed for operation as a direct shaft drive.
The inboard motor is equipped with a shaft coupling and a thrust bearing. By cou-
pling to the shaft using an Aquadrive CV10 or CV15 constant velocity drive shaft,
motor vibrations are absorbed. The thrust bearing reduces the forces exerted by the
propeller shaft on the motor.
Sea water can be used as the cooling water. By means of hydrogeneration while un-
der sail, sail yachts can generate electrical energy and feed it directly to the high-
voltage battery.

The cooling pump pumps sea water in order to conduct waste heat away from the
power electronics and the motor.

The DEEP BLUE system is supplied with energy via a BMW i3 30.5 kWh high-voltage
battery.
When installed in motorboats, ocean-going yachts, and boats which are transported
on trailers, special damping elements are used.
For safety reasons, a ventilation system must be installed in enclosed boats.
ADVICE
Ensure sufficient ventilation of the high-voltage battery.
■Heat build-up can occur if the environment is not sufficiently ventilated.
■In the event of damage, hot or poisonous gases may escape from the bat-
tery.

6Heat exchanger
The high-voltage battery’s cooling system has its own cooling water pump for sea
water and a cooling compressor. It works using a special coolant and a heat ex-
changer which transfers heat energy to sea water.
Under heavy loads, the active cooling module ensures a constantly low operating
temperature. This increases the availability and extends the high-voltage battery’s
service life.

At the digital and power electronics level, the system management unit combines all
DEEP BLUE components on board into a single system.
High-performance system controllers ensure the operational reliability of all system
functions and their ease of use.
In more complex DEEP BLUE systems, several system management units can be net-
worked with one another.
The system management unit is available in sizes S and L.
AC Charger

The high-voltage batteries of the DEEP BLUE system are charged by means of one or
more AC chargers. The AC chargers convert the AC voltage of the shore supply into
high-voltage direct current (DC) electricity for charging the high-voltage battery.
The electrical connections are made in a separate switch box (Shore Power Distribu-
tion).

The Shore Power Distribution S allows the use of a single charger unit. With the
Shore Power Distribution L, up to three charger units can be operated. Depending
on the model, this unit ensures that the shore power connection is disconnected
when the Emergency Off Switch is triggered. In addition, the 12 V battery is support-
ed. The Shore Power Distribution L can contain fuses for AC and DC supplies.

12 V battery
The 12 V battery supplies the 12 V on-board network independently of the high-
voltage batteries, and is necessary for powering up the system and switching on the
high-voltage batteries.
During normal operation, charging the 12 V battery using an external charger unit is
not necessary. If the high-voltage batteries are switched on during charging or while
in travel mode, then the 12 V battery is recharged at up to 10 A.
For additional loads on board (e.g. position lights, radio), it may be necessary to
connect another battery using an isolation diode. This prevents the DEEP BLUE
system’s 12 V battery from becoming fully discharged, which would prevent the
DEEP BLUE system from being restarted.
If currents greater than 3 A are permanently required for the on-board power sup-
ply, then Torqeedo recommends the installation of an additional 12 V supply. This
prevents the 12 V battery from becoming fully discharged, which would prevent the
DEEP BLUE system from being restarted.
ADVICE
The 12 V battery is responsible for switching on the high-voltage batteries at
every start. Ensure that it is sufficiently charged. The 12 V battery is automatically
recharged during the operation of the DEEP BLUE system.
Circuit breaker
The circuit breaker protects the power circuit from damage which could be caused
by an overload of the wiring.

1. Set the mechanical resistance of the grub screw (1) using an Allen key.
The lever becomes more difficult to move if the grub screw is tightened clockwise.
The lever becomes easier to move if the grub screw is unscrewed anticlockwise.

4.1 Safety features
The DEEP BLUE system is equipped with a wide range of safety features.
Safety features Function
Insulation monitor Monitors the status of the insulation of the high-volt-
age power network, and issues a warning if the insula-
tion is compromised.
Emergency Stop Stops the propeller immediately, and switches off the
high-voltage batteries.
Pilot-line Stops the propeller immediately, and switches off the
high-voltage batteries when the lanyard is actuated;
this must be connected to the wrist or life jacket of the
skipper.
Fuses To avoid fire/overheating in the event of a short circuit
or overload of the DEEP BLUE system.
Venting system Is used for venting dangerous gases from the boat’s in-
terior in the event of a battery fault.
Electronic
accelerator lever
Ensures that the DEEP BLUE system can be switched on
only in the neutral position, in order to prevent acci-
dental operation of the DEEP BLUE system.
4.2 General safety provisions
ADVICE
■You must read and comply with the safety and warning information in these
instructions.
■Read these instructions carefully before you operate the DEEP BLUE system.
Failure to comply with these instructions can result in personal injury or property
damage. Torqeedo accepts no liability for damage caused by actions which are
contrary to these instructions.
The symbols are explained in detail in Chapter 1.2, "Explanation of symbols".
Particular safety regulations may apply to certain activities. Safety and warning infor-
mation for these activities is to be found in the relevant sections of the instructions.
4.2.1 Principles
Operate your DEEP BLUE system in compliance with all local safety and accident pre-
vention regulations.
Before delivery, the DEEP BLUE system was designed and manufactured with the ut-
most care and with a special focus on convenience, user-friendliness and safety, and
it has been extensively tested.
However, unintended use of the DEEP BLUE system may result in danger to the
user's life and limb or of third parties, in addition to extensive property damage.

4.2.2 Intended use

Intended use also includes:
■The attachment of the DEEP BLUE system to the attachment points specified for
this purpose, and compliance with the specified torque values.
■Compliance with all directions in these instructions.
■Compliance with care and maintenance intervals.
■The exclusive use of original replacement parts.
■The venting system for enclosed installation.
4.2.3 Foreseeable misuse
Use other than, or going beyond, that defined in Chapter 4.2.2, "Intended use" is
deemed to be unintended use. The operator bears the sole responsibility for dam-
age arising from unintended use, and the manufacturer accepts no liability whatso-
ever.
Amongst others, the following are deemed to be unintended use:
■Operation of the propeller outside the water, even for a short period.
■Underwater use of the DEEP BLUE system.
■Operation in waterways into which chemicals have been released.
■The use of the DEEP BLUE system outside of marine crafts.

4.2.4 Before use
WARNING!
Danger to life from a boat which is not manoeuvrable!
This can result in severe physical injuries or death.
■Before starting a trip, inform yourself of the intended travel area, and take
note of the predicted weather and water conditions.
■Depending on the size of the boat, keep the typical safety equipment ready
(anchor, paddles, means of communication, auxiliary drive if necessary).
■Check the system for mechanical damage before setting out on a trip.
■Do not use the system unless it is in proper working order.
■The DEEP BLUE system may be handled only by appropriately qualified persons
who have the necessary physical and mental aptitude. Comply with the relevant
national regulations.
■The boat builder, dealer, or vendor can provide training in the operation and
safety provisions of the DEEP BLUE system.
■As the operator of the boat, you are responsible for the safety of the people on
board, and for all marine crafts and persons in your vicinity. It is therefore essen-
tial that you comply with the basic rules of conduct of navigation, and that you
read these instructions thoroughly.
■Particular care is required when people are in the water, even when the boat is
moving at a slow speed.
■Comply with the boat manufacturer's instructions regarding the permitted mo-
torisation of your boat. Do not exceed the stated loading and power limits.
■Ensure that the motor space is always closed during operation.
■Check the status and all functions of the DEEP BLUE DEEP BLUEsystem (includ-
ing Emergency Stop) at low power before every trip, see Chapter 8.3, "Mainte-
nance intervals".
■Become familiar with all controls of the DEEP BLUE system. Above all, you should
be capable of stopping the DEEP BLUE system quickly if necessary.

4.2.5 General safety information
DANGER!
Danger to life from electric shock.
Contact with uninsulated or damaged parts can result in death or severe
physical injuries.
■Do not undertake any repair work whatsoever on the DEEP BLUE system.
■Never touch scuffed or severed wiring or obviously defective components.
■If you suspect a problem, switch off the DEEP BLUE system immediately, and
do not touch any metal components.
■Prevent the electronic components from coming into contact with water.
■Prevent strong mechanical forces from working on the batteries and cables
of the DEEP BLUE system.
DANGER!
Danger from battery gases.
Death or severe physical injuries may result.
■Regarding the 12V battery to be used, comply with all safety information in
the instructions of the relevant battery manufacturer.
■Do not use the DEEP BLUE system if the batteries are damaged; inform
Torqeedo Service.
■The DEEP BLUE System has a venting opening on the casing in the unlikely
event that a cell degases. Always keep the hose outlet of the venting system
clear.
DANGER!
Danger of fire and burns from overheating or from hot surfaces on the
components.
Fire and hot surfaces can result in death or severe physical injuries.
■Do not store flammable objects in the area of the high-voltage equipment.
■Use only charging cables which are suitable for outdoor use.
■Always unroll the cables completely.
■If the DEEP BLUE system becomes very hot or you see steam or smoke,
switch the system off immediately.
■During or immediately after a trip, do not touch any of the motor or battery
components.
■Prevent strong mechanical forces from working on the batteries and cables
of the DEEP BLUE system.
DANGER!
Danger to life if the Emergency Stop is not triggered.
Death or severe physical injuries may result.
■Always attach the lanyard to the skipper's wrist or his life jacket.
WARNING!
Mechanical hazard from rotating components.
This can result in severe physical injuries or death.
■Do not wear jewellery or loose clothing in the vicinity of the drive shaft or
the propeller. Tie up long, loose hair.
■Switch off the DEEP BLUE system when there are people in the immediate
vicinity of the drive shaft or the propeller.
■Do not carry out maintenance or cleaning work on the drive shaft or pro-
peller if the DEEP BLUE system is engaged.
■Operate the propeller only when it is under water.

range displayed on the on-board computer does not take wind, current, and
direction of travel into account.
■Build in a sufficient buffer for the necessary range.

Danger of injury from propeller!
Moderate or severe physical injuries may result.
■When working on the propeller, always switch the system off at the main
switch.
■Pull off the lanyard.
WARNING!
Danger of cutting by the propeller.
Moderate or severe physical injuries may result.
■Keep away from the propeller.
■Comply with the safety provisions.
■Beware of people in the water.
CAUTION!
Damage to the high-voltage battery from stepping on or placing objects on
it!

and decommissioning of the DEEP BLUE system.

■Check the system for mechanical damage before setting out on a trip.
■Do not use the system unless it is in proper working order.
6.1 System start
In order to start the DEEP BLUE system, the remote throttle lever must be brought
into the neutral position. If the Emergency Stop Switch was previously triggered,
then it must again be placed in the initial position.
The system starts after the key switch has been turned. The remote throttle
lever beeps once and the Select LED (6) lights up. With a double remote throt-
tle lever, Select LEDs (4) and (6) light up in red, see "Fig. 36: Display overview",
page 35. The colour changes to orange within five seconds.
The drive is available, and runs in emergency mode (see Chapter 6.3.1, "Emergency
mode"), until the further system functions are ready and the colour of the Select LED
(6) changes to green. With a double remote throttle lever, the Select LEDs (6) and (4)
light up in green. This should not take longer than 20 to 30 seconds.
If the Select LEDs continue to flash red, an error has occurred. It may be possible to
correct this error by restarting the system.
