HOW TO SET UP A HOTSPOT NETWORK
WITH A TP-LINK WR810N
The TP-Link WR810N is a versatile, compact travel router that can be used to set up a temporary
wired LAN so that you can commission an N4-based Design Studio installation in a location where no
internet access is available.

In addition to supporting Wi-Fi router and Access Point modes, the WR810N supports two additional modes —
“Client” mode and “Hotspot Router” mode — that allow you to tap into a hotspot’s internet connection.
The difference between these two modes is as follows:
• The “Client” mode creates a network bridge between your hotspot and the TP-Link’s LAN port, so that any
devices connected to the LAN port are on the same subnet as the Hotspot. In this mode, the hotspot acts
as the DHCP server, and you can connect a laptop to the hotspot’s Wi-Fi network and communicate with the
devices connected to the LAN port.

Thedifferencebetweenthesetwomodesisasfollows:
The“Client”modecreatesanetworkbridgebetweenyourhotspotandtheTP-Link’sLANport,
sothatanydevicesconnectedtotheLANportareonthesamesubnetastheHotspot.   Inthis
mode,thehotspotactsastheDHCPserver,andyoucanconnectalaptoptothehotspot’s
Wi-FinetworkandcommunicatewiththedevicesconnectedtotheLANport.

The“HotspotRouter”modecreatesanentirelynewsubnetandWi-Finetwork,andusesyour
hotspot’sWi-Finetworkasthe“WAN”connection.  Inthismode,theTP-LinkistheDHCP
serverandyoucanconnectalaptoptotheTP-Link’sWi-Finetworkandcommunicatewiththe
devicesontheethernetLANport.  Itisimportanttonotethatifyouconnectthelaptoptothe
Wi-Fihotspot,youwillnotbeabletocommunicatewiththedevicesontheTP-Linksubnet.

The “Hotspot Router” mode creates an entirely new subnet and Wi-Fi network, and uses your hotspot’s Wi-Fi
network as the “WAN” connection. In this mode, the TP-Link is the DHCP server and you can connect a laptop to
the TP-Link’s Wi-Fi network and communicate with the devices on the ethernet LAN port. It is important to note
that if you connect the laptop to the Wi-Fi hotspot, you will not be able to communicate with the devices on the
TP-Link subnet.
So the primary difference between the two modes is that client mode uses the subnet of the hotspot, and
hotspot router mode creates a new subnet isolated from the hotspot. Normally, you can use either client mode
or hotspot router mode interchangeably, but the in the following circumstances you may want to choose one
over the other:
• If your hotspot’s Wi-Fi range is superior to the TP-Link’s, you may want to choose client mode and connect
your laptop to the hotspot
• If you are using an iPhone as the hotspot, it is generally better to use hotspot router mode, because of some
technical limitations in the iPhone’s hotspot (e.g., it does not support more than a handful of devices and will
actually stop working if you connect too many devices).
INSTRUCTIONS FOR SETTING UP CLIENT MODE
1. Power on the WR810N and, if necessary, reset it to factory defaults by pressing the “reset” button until the
LED starts blinking
2. On a laptop, connect to the Wi-Fi network of the TP-Link. The network name and password is printed on the
side of the unit.

3. In a web browser, go to http://192.168.0.254 and log in with username “admin” and password “admin”. This
should take you to the Quick Setup page. Press “Next” to start the wizard.
4. On the first page of the wizard, select “Client” as the working mode and press “next”.

5. On the next page, enter the details of the hotspot to which you will be connecting. You can press “Survey”
to choose from the available networks. (Make sure your hotspot is enabled!) Click “next” to proceed to the
next page.

6. On the next page, configure your Wi-Fi client settings as well as the settings for the TP-Link’s access point.
You can press “Survey” to choose from the available networks. (Make sure your hotspot is enabled!) By
default, the access point will be configured with the settings printed on the side of the unit.
7. Press “reboot” on the last page to finish setup.
