Congratulations on your purchase of a Tuffcare®
Compact Featherlight! Tuffcare’s Compact Featherlight
is a self propelled wheelchair designed specially for
individuals with an active life style. Its’ main frame is
made of alloy steel for strength with aluminim and high
impact nylon parts to reduce weight. Our Compact
Featherlight has multiple size adjustment in all key
locations, it a great choice with users that require to
spend long period of on the chair. Quick release rear
wheels and front riggings makes transporting easy.

GENERAL GUIDELINES
GENERAL GUIDELINES
GENERAL GUIDELINES contains important information for
the safe operation and use of this Medical Device.
LDo not operate your wheelchair until you have read and
fully understood this manual.
LDo not operate your wheelchair until its fully assembled
and checked.
LDo not leave your wheelchair unattended without locking
its brakes.
LDo not stop on a grade or ramp.
LDo not store this product at extreme temperatures (<0 >
40o).
LDo not exceed weight limit or it could result in serious in-
jury.
LWatch out for: Uneven surfaces, cords, loose rugs, misc
toys or tools on the ground, spilled water or oily surfaces.
LDo not perform adjustment to the wheelchair while it is in
use.
LDo not move backwards without making sure no obstacle
is behind you.
LDo not make sharp turns.
LDo not turn or reverse on an incline.(maximum 10% incline)
LAll wheels must be in contact with the floor at all times during
use. This will ensure the wheelchair is properly balanced.
LDo not lean over your wheelchair for any reason. Check
before use that the product is stable, rigid and that all rivets
and screws are fastened.

ASSEMBLY
ASSEMBLY
The wheelchair comes with a pre-assembled main frame for
easy assembly.
WARNING
Use only Tuffcare parts to complete this wheelchair.
ATTACHING THE BACK REST AND SEATBELT OF THE
WHEELCHAIR
1a. To assemble the backrest
section, fold the lower frame of
the wheelchair horizontally,
pushing the connecting pipes
closer together.
1b. After folding the chair, align
the back posts with the back
connecting pipes.

ATTACH OR DETACH THE REAR WHEELS FROM THE
WHEELCHAIR
2a. Locate the rear wheel axle receptacle hole on the side of
the wheelchair below the back post. * Make sure the wheel
lock is disengaged to avoid obstacle to the wheel.
2b. Align the quick release axle with the connecting receptacle
hole on the wheel mounting plate.

1f. To keep the lower part of
back upholstery from moving,
secure the bottom part of it to
the frame with the two velcro
cable ties provided.

1c. Insert the back posts into the connecting pipes. Adjust the
back upholstery to the user’s prefered height, line up the
screw holes on the back post to the hex hole on the connecting
pipe.
1d. Insert the mounting bolt from out side of the frame. The
hole on the outside is a hexagon shape, the hexagon head
of the bolt should sit in the space nicely. Secure on other side
of the bolt with a black cross knob.
1e. If the seat belt is needed, insert the brass loop holes at
the end of the seat belt between the backpost bolt and knob
and tighten.

2d. Press the button located
at the center of the wheel and
insert it into the receptacle hole.
2e. Release the button and make sure the two balls at the end
of the axle shaft protrude pass the receptacle tube to secure.
Repeat on the other side.
2f. Press the button located at
the center of the wheel while
pulling the wheel outwards to
detach.

ATTACH THE ANTI-TIPPERS TO THE WHEELCHAIR
3a. Locate the end pipe of the back wheel on the back of the
wheelchair.
3b. Insert the anti-tipper into the end pipe until the locking pins
locked in place. Repeat on the other side.
3c. When anti-tipper is not
needed, press and hold the
locking pins on both sides of
the end tube, rotate the anti-
tipper wheels upwards to
move it out of the way.

4e. Align the pin holes on the front rigging with the connecting
pins on the wheelchair main frame.
4f. Connect the pins on the wheelchair with the holes on the
front rigging and close the metal tab around the wheelchair
lower mounting bracket.
4g. Make sure the 2 mounting tabs on front rigging seat flat
with the mounting bracket on the wheelchair frame, and the
pin holes are inserted to the mounting pins.

ATTACHING THE FRONT RIGGING TO THE WHEELCHAIR
4a. Locate the detachable
legrest or footrest.
4b. Locate the connecting tab on the detachable legrest or
footrest with the two connecting pin holes.
4c. Open the connecting metal tab on the front rigging.
4d. Locate the two connecting pins on the wheelchair above
the caster wheels.

USING THE SEATBELT
To engage the seatbelt, push the fork inside the clasp. Press
the fork tabs in the clasp to open the seatbelt.
Adjust the tension of the seatbelt accordingly by pulling on the
end strap on the fork side.
USING THE WHEEL BRAKES
1. Locate the handles on either side
of the wheelchair in front of the
wheels.
2. Push the handle bar on the brake
forward to activate the wheel brakes,
pull back to release brake.

ADJUSTMENTS ADJUSTING THE SEAT HEIGHT
Rise the seat height by reposition the rear wheel mounting plate.
Note: When rising the seat height, front caster need to be
exchange with 8” casters.
1. Locate the quick release axle mounting plate on the main
frame of the wheelchair. Remove the two screws holding the
mounting plate to the frame.
2. Adjust the plate by positioning it on the
mounting tube of the wheelchair to the
prefered height. The seat height is at 18”
by default, moving the plate to the middle
position will raise the seat to 19” , move it
to the lower setting will raise the seat to
20”.
3. When adjusted to the prefered
height, replace the screws and
tightly seal close with the screw
nuts and washers. Repeat on the
other side and reinsert the wheels
into the knob.

ADJUSTING CASTER HEIGHT OR REPLACING
1. Locate the caster wheel in the front of the wheelchair and
remove the screw nut and screw from the fork of the caster
wheel.
2. After removing the screw, adjust the caster
wheel fork to the prefered height.
3. Line up the caster wheel fork with
the caster wheel and reinsert the
screw, tightly sealing it with the
screw nut. Repeat on the other
side.
Note: When rising the seat height,
replace the 6 inch front caster wheel
with the optional 8 inch front caster
wheel by following the previous
screw removal steps.

ADJUSTING REAR WHEEL FOR AMPUTEE
Note: This process adds 4” to the distance between the
front and rear wheel, increase stability to the base.
1. Locate the quick release axle mounting plate on the main
frame of the wheelchair. Remove the two screws holding the
mounting plate to the frame.
2. Flip the mounting plate facing back of the frame.
3. Then replace the screws and tightly seal close with the
screw nuts and washers. Repeat on the other side and reinsert
the wheels into the knob.

ADJUSTING THE ANGLE OF THE CASTER WHEEL
1. The degree of the caster wheel angle can be adjusted by
removing the screw from the caster stem and rotating the
hexagonal dial plate.
2. Rotate the hexagonal dial plate to change the caster to the
prefered angle and screw tightly close.
ADJUSTING THE HEIGHT OF THE ARM RESTS
1. Locate the release button on the side of the side panel
below the armrest.

2. While pressing the button, pull up or push down the arm
pad to the prefered height. Once the arm height is adjusted,
release the button to secure the arm in place.
USING THE SWINGBACK ARMS
1. Locate the arm lock of the swingback arm at the bottom of
the arm, in between the seat and the wheel lock.

1. To use the footrest, locate the front rigging in the front of
the wheelchair.
2. Flip down the footplate at the bottom.
3. Measure the user’s lower leg length from knee to heel, and
adjust the high of the footplate to match. Maintain one’s thigh
parallel to the seat for comfort.
USING THE FOOTREST

2. Press the tab around the top to release the arm from its
receptacle.
3. Once the arm is released from locking, lift up the arm and
swing it backwards. To put back in place, push the swingback
arm back down and line up with arm receptacle and click it in
place.
Note: The adjustable height swingback arm can be replaced
with the optional sports lightweight swingback arm.

1. To use the legrest, locate the front rigging in the front of the
wheelchair.
2. Flip down the footplate at the bottom, then flip open the calf
pad.
3. Measure the user’s lower leg length from knee to heel, and
adjust the high of the footplate to match. Maintain one’s thigh
parallel to the seat for comfort.
4. Adjust the height of the calf pad to sit in the middle of one’s
calf.
USING THE LEGREST

5. To elevate the height of the legrest, locate the angle lever
on either side of the legrests.
6. Pull the lever upward to lift the legrest by the footplate to
the prefered angle.
7. Push the handle downward and gently lower the legrest to
the prefered angle.

DO NOT attempt to transfer until the user is assessed by
a qualified professional. Please thoroughly read and fully
understand the instructions in this Owner’s Manual.

4. To use the anti-tipper when going up ramps or inclines, lean
the chair backwards and balance on the back wheels. If there
is no assistant for the patient, the patient must learn forward
in wheelchair while using the hand bars on the wheels to go
up a ramp or incline.
3. For active users who don’t require the assist of the anti-tipper.
Press and hold the locking pins on both sides of the end tube,
rotate the anti-tipper wheels upwards to move it out of the way.

1. The anti-tipping wheels of the wheelchair are located at the
back of the wheelchair, adjacent to the main wheels. These
are used to prevent tipping over backwards when going up
ramps or inclines.
USING THE REAR ANTI-TIPPER
2. To adjust the tipping height of the wheelchair, press the two
release buttons on the telescoping lower tube, then adjust the
height of the lower tube so that wheel is within 1-1/2” to 2” off
the ground.

CENTER OF GRAVITY
When reaching, bending or transferring in and out of the
wheelchair, a change in the weight distribution will occur in the
wheelchair. To assess safety limits while using the wheelchair,
practice reaching, bending and transferring in the presence of
an attendant before independent, active use of the wheelchair.
When performing reaching, bending, or transferring in or out
of the wheelchair, it is important to use the casters to maintain
stability and balance.
REACHING, LEANING AND BENDING (FORWARD)
Extend the casters away from the main wheels and lock the
them. Do not attempt to retrieve an object if moving forward
in the wheelchair seat or if reaching between your knees is
necessary.

REACHING AND BENDING (BACKWARDS)
Position the wheelchair as close to the object as possible and
extend the casters away from the main wheels, to create
longest possible wheelbase. Only reach back as far as your
arm will extend without changing your seating position.
TIPPING
When tipping the wheelchair, an attendant must grasp the
back of the wheelchair. They should tell the wheelchair occupant
before tipping and remind the occupant to lean back. Make
sure the hands and feet of the occupant are clear of all wheels
and pinch points.
COPING WITH EVERYDAY OBSTACLES
Knowing and learning how to manage your wheelchair can
help can help with coping with everyday obstacles. Keep in
mind your center of gravity to maintain stability and balance.

MAINTENANCE
MAINTENANCE
DETECTING WEAR AND DAMAGE
With routine use, nuts and bolts on the chair can become
loose. To ensure safe continuous operation of the wheelchair,
it is important to inspect the product EVERY MONTH for loose
nuts and bolts and re-tighten as appropriate. Check EVERY 6
MONTHS that the wheels, front forks, frame, and the upholstery
are in good condition.
CHECK BRAKE FOR FUNCTIONING
Always test the brakes EVERY MONTH by applying the
brakes to the locked position, and then trying to push the
wheelchair. If the brakes do not lock the wheels, the brakes
need to be adjusted. If adjustment does not tighten the brakes,
DO NOT use the wheelchair.
LUBRICATING THE WHEELS
Make sure that ALL wheels are free of hair, lint, and other
debris. A light grease lubricant may be applied to the ball bearing
and swivel of the casters every three months.
CLEANING THE WHEELCHAIR
Use soapy water and a soft cloth to clean the surface of the
wheelchair. Wipe off any moisture after cleaning. Using abrasive
clothes or other products can cause grates.
PERFORMING REGULAR MAINTENANCE
Regular maintenance of the wheelchair and accessories is
required to ensure proper operation. The casters and axle
bolts are also require check-ups for proper tightness.
CURBS
Curbs should only be attempted with the help of an attendant.
The following are instructions are for negotiating curbs. It is
important to develop safe techniques best suited to your abilities
with the help of a healthcare professional. Curbs, steps and
stairways are dangerous obstacles for any wheelchair user.
Find alternative way around such obstacles to ensure safety
of the operater. Curb cuts, ramps and designated disabled
elevators are available is most areas now.

KNOW YOUR OWN CAPABILITIES AND LIMITATIONS
Know your capabilities and limitations regarding strength and
endurance before attempting an incline or decline on the
wheelchair. Practice with a healthcare professional before you
attempt any inclines, declines, curbs, or ramps. Before you
proceed onto such obstacles, always inspect for hazards like
holes, slippery or uneven surfaces, or other obstacles. If you
cannot see the entire ramp, have someone inspect it for you.

LIMITED WARRANTY
LIMITED WARRANTY
The warranty below has been drafted to comply with Federal Law applicable
to products manufactured after July 4, 1975. This warranty is extended
only to the original purchaser/consumer (or dealer non-consumer who
does not buy for resale).
Tuffcare®warrants that it’s Compact series wheelchairs will be free from
defective workmanship and materials for three years following the date of
original purchasing date with the following exceptions: All welds are
warranted for the life of the wheelchair. The tires on the wheelchairs are
warranted for one year. The warranty period commences on the original
purchasing date. If within such warranty period any such product proven
to Tuffcare®satisfaction to be defective, such product will be repaired or
replaced at Tuffcare®option.
Tuffcare®sole obligation and your exclusive remedy under this warranty
shall be limited to such repair and/or replacement. This warranty does not
include any labor charges incurred in replacement parts installation. Freight
charges to the factory are at the expense of the consumer or seller. Return
freight charges will be prepaid by Tuffcare®. For warranty service, please
contact the authorized dealer from whom you purchased your Tuffcare®
products. In the event that you do not receive satisfactory warranty service,
please write directly to: Tuffcare®: 4977 La Palma Ave, Anaheim, California,
92807.
DO NOT RETURN PRODUCTS WITHOUT PRIOR AUTHORIZATION.
LIMITATIONS AND EXCLUSIONS: The foregoing warranty shall not apply
to products subjected to negligence, abuse, misuse, improper operation,
improper maintenance, improper storage or damages beyond Tuffcare®
control. The evaluation will be solely determined by Tuffcare®. The warranty
shall not apply to problems arising from normal wear, or failure to follow
instructions, or if parts are not manufactured by Tuffcare®, or do not comply
with original equipment specifications that are added to Tuffcare®product.
THE FOREGOING WARRANTY IS EXCLUSIVE AND IN LIEU OF ALL
OTHER WARRANTIES, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO THE
IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY AND FITNESS FOR A
PARTICULAR PURPOSE AND SHALL NOT EXTEND BEYOND THE
DURATION OF THE EXPRESS WARRANTY PROVIDED HEREIN.
TUFFCARE®SHALL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY CONSEQUENTIAL OR
INCIDENTAL DAMAGES WHATSOEVER.
This warranty gives you specific rights and you may also have other legal
rights which vary from state to state. Some states do not allow the exclusion
or limitations of incidental or consequential damage, or limitation on how
long an implied warranty
