Avoid magnetic objects near the printer.
Don t use tweezers, knife,
screwdriver or otherhard objects
touch the heatingpiece; for the
heating piece willbe hurt eternally.
Do not putprinter on unstable surface.

INTRODUCTION
WARNING
Some semiconductor devicesare easily damaged by static
electricity. You should turn the printer"OFF", before you connect or
remove the cableson the rear side, in order to guard the printer
against the staticelectricity. If the printeris damaged by the static
electricity,you should turn the printer"OFF".
The RP-3180 Thermal Printer is designed for use with electronicinstruments
such as systemECR, POS, banking equipment, computer peripheral
equipment, etc.
NOTE: The socket-outlet shall benear the equipment and it shall be
easy accessible.
The main features of theprinter are as follows:
1. High speedprinting: 180mm per second max.
2. Low noisethermal printing.
3. RS-232, Parallel, USB interfaceSelectable.
4. The databuffer allows the unit to receive print data evenduring printing.
5. Peripheral units drive circuit enables control ofexternal devices suchas
cash drawer.
6. Bar codeprinting is possible by using a bar code command.
7. Support autoStore Logo or Hello Logo printing.
8. Enable tochange some functions by DIP Switch.
Please be sureto read the instruction in this manual carefully before
using your newRP-3180.

Chapter 1. Setting up the Printer
Your printer box shouldinclude these items. If any items are damaged or
missing, please contactyour dealer for assistance.

1-2. Installing the printer
Avoid locations in direct sunlight or subject toexcessive heat.
Avoid using or storing the printer in placessubject to excessivemoisture.
Do not useor store the printer in a dusty or dirtyarea. Avoid places subject
to intense vibrationor shock.
Choose a stableand flat place for proper use of the printer.
Make sure thatthere is enough space around the printer so thatit can be
used easily.

1-3. Using the Printer
BUTTON
Press the FEEDbutton once to advance paper one line. You can alsohold
down the FEEDbutton to feed paper continuously.

Chapter 2. Connecting the cables
2-1. Connecting the AC Cable
NOTE:To remove theDC cable connector, make sure that the power
supply s power cord is unplugged; thengrasp the connectorat the
arrow and pullit straight out.
2-2. Connecting the AC adapter to the printer
Youcan connect upthe three cables to the printer. They all connect to the
connector panel onthe back of the printer, which isshown below:

NOTE:Before connecting anyof the cables, make sure that both the
printer and thehost are turned off.

WARNING
When connecting ordisconnecting the power supply from the
printer, make sure thatthe power supplyis not plugged into an
electrical outlet. Otherwise you maydamage the power supply or
the printer.
If the powersupply`s rated voltage and youroutlet`s voltage do not
match, contact yourdealer for assistance. Do not plug in the power
cord. Otherwise, youmay damage the power supply or the printer.
2-3. Connecting Interface Cable and Drawer Cable to the printer
Interface Connector CableDrawer kick-out Cable
Connect the HostComputer (POS/ECR) to the printer using an interface cable
that matches thespecifications of the printer and the Host computer
(POS/ECR). Be sureto use a drawer that matches the printer s specification.
1). Turn off both the printer andthe Host computer (POS/ECR).
2). Plug theinterface cable connector into the printer s interface connector,
then tighten thescrews on both sides of the connector. In case ofthe
parallel interface, squeezethe wire dips on the printer together until they
lock in placeon both sides of the connector.
3). Plug thedrawer cable into the drawer kick-out connector onthe back of the
printer next tothe interface connector. Do not connect a telephone line to
the drawer kick-out connector; otherwisethe printer andthe telephone line
may be damaged.
4). Turn on the Printer and Hostcomputer (POS/ECR).

Chapter 3. Installing the roll paper
3-1. Installing or Replacing the PaperRoll
1. Make surethat the printer is not receiving data; otherwise, datamay be lost.
2. Open thepaper roll cover by pressing the cover-open button.
3. Remove theused paper roll core if there is one.
4. Insert thepaper roll as shown.
5. Be sureto note the correct direction that the paper comesoff the roll.
6. Pull outa small amountof paper, as shown.Then close the cover.
NOTE:Be sure touse paper rolls that meet the specifications. Do
not use paperrolls that have the paper glued to the corebecause
the printer cannot detect the paper endcorrectly.
NOTE:Do not openthe print cover while the printer is operating.
This may damagethe printer.
NOTE:When closing thecover, press the centerof printer cover
firmly to preventpaper miss-loading

3-2. Removing Jammed Paper
1. Turn the printer off and pressthe cover open button.
2. Remove jammedpaper, reinstall the roll, and close the cover.
3. If paperis caught in the cutter and you cannot openthe printer cover, open
the cutter coveras shown in A.
4. Open thecutter cover.
5. Turn the knob (as shown inB). Until the cutter blade to the normal position.
6. Close thecutter cover.
7. Open theprinter cover and remove the jammed paper.
3-3. Cleaning the Print Head
Turn off theprinter, open the paperroll cover, and cleanthe thermal elements
of the printhead with a cotton swab moistened with an alcoholsolvent
(ethanol, methanol, orIPA).
Recommends cleaning thethermal head periodically (generally every 3
months) to maintainreceipt print quality.
NOTE:Do not touchthe print head because it can be very hot after
printing.
NOTE:After printing, theprint head canbe very hot. Be careful not to
touch it andto let it cool before you clean it. Do not damage theprint
head by touchingit with your fingers or any hard object.

Chapter 4. The self test
The self-test checks whether the printer has anyproblems. If theprinter does
not function properly, contact your dealer.
1. Make surepaper roll has been installed properly.
2. Turn on the power while holdingdown the FEEDbutton. The self-test begins.
3. The printeris ready to receive data when it completes theself-test.

There is aDIP Switch on the bottom of printer. It is easyto change some
functions of theprinter through setting DIP pins to [On] or [Off].
The default settingfor all DIP pins are [ON] Position.
Note: Changes inDIP switch settings are recognized only when the printer
power is turnedon or when the printer is reset by usingthe interface. If the
DIP switch settingis changed after the printer power is turned on,the change
does not effectuntil the printer is turned on again or isreset.
This feature allowsexperienced users to see exactly what data is comingto
the printer.This can beuseful in findingsoftware problems. When you turn on
the hexadecimal dumpfunction, the printer prints all commands and data in
hexadecimal format alongwith a guide section to help you find specific
commands.
To use the hexadecimal dump function,follow these steps:
1. Make surethat there is a roll paper inthe printer.
2. After youmake sure that the printer is off.
3. Turn on the power while holdingdown the on line button,the printer enters
the hexadecimal dumpmode.
4. Run anysoftware program that sends data to the printer. The printerwill
print all thecodes it receives in a two-column format. The firstcolumn
contains the hexadecimalcodes and the second column gives the ASCII
characters that correspondto the codes.
