2 INTRODUCTION
The instructions given in this document arecommon to all the‘MZX125
andMZX250’ fire controllers,any differences beingoutlinedas
appropriate Thisdocumentis writtenfor FirmwareVersion 14.
TheMINERVAMZX 125/250, form a comprehensiveandcompatible
rangeof modular andflexibleEN54 approved addressablefire controllers
usingTyco MZX TechnologyTM.
BothvariantsfullycomplywiththerequirementsofEN54parts2and4and
may beinstalled in a system which complieswith the requirementsof BS
5839:Part 1.
2.1 KEY FUNCTIONS AND FEATURES
TheMZXcontrollers are builtaround commonhardwareand software
modulesincorporatingthe followingcommonfunctionsand features:
Full EN54 compliant control switches and indicatorswith
keyswitchenable and optionalprogrammable LED indicators and
controlswitches.
Largebacklit 16 linex 40 characterLCDdisplay withdetailedand
preciseidentificationof all sectors,zones and points,
comprehensive 95 characteremergencyprocedure instructions
and full system statusindication includingcountersof number of
pointsin alarm,fault, disabledand test mode.
Extensivemenu driven andpasswordcontrolled operatorand
engineer functions including extensive isolate, override, test,
serviceand diagnostic functions.
Systemmanagerandengineerfunctionsincludingeditingofpoint
descriptionsandviewing/printing of pointvalues including CO
levels,temperaturesand detectorobscurationlevels.
Optional self-test and verification of detectors from thecontroller.
Peer-to-peer communicationwith upto 98 other controllers
providingaseamlessoperatorinterfaceto allother relevant
definedcontrollersonthe network.
Eventlog for loggingofup to 3000 eventswhich can be viewed,
selectedand printed.
Constantmonitoringofalldetectorsand inputcircuitsand
processingof detectorsensor informationusingstandard,CCO
and FastLogicfuzzylogic algorithms.
Longtermaveragingandconditionmonitoringofsmokedetectors
withdirty detectoridentification.
Automaticormanualswitchingofdetectormodesandsensitivities
according to changes in occupancy patterns(daymode) and
variationsin firerisk.

3.1 OPERATOR’S INDICATORS
AND CONTROLS
3.1.1 GENERAL
ALLoperatorcontrols andindicatorsare mounted on the front panel.
3.1.2 DISPLAY CONTROL MODULE
TheDisplayControl Module (Fig.3MZX125 and Fig. 4 MZX250) contain
thefollowing indicators andcontrols:
A640characterbacklitLCDalphanumericdisplay,arrangedin16
rowsof40characters.Thisisusedtodisplayinformationaboutthe
systemstatusandalarms. Thebacklightisonwhenthekeyswitch
isset to the ‘enable’position, when akey is pressed orwhen an
Alarmor Faultis present.
SwitchesF1toF5-usedtocarryoutthefunctionsdisplayedonthe
bottom lineofthe LCDdisplay.
Analphanumeric keypad usedfor entering accesscodes, text
stringsorgeneralinformationas follows:

SCROLLUP and SCROLL DOWNkeys - used to scrollthrougha
displayorlog one entry ata time. These keys will auto-repeat if
helddown, ie, willscroll continuously.
WhenusedinconjunctionwiththeConfigurationmenu,theUPkey
switchesto upper caseandthe DOWN keyto lower case.

3.2.1 FIRE WINDOW
Thefirewindowinthequiescentmodewilldisplaytheproductname,date/
timeand companyname.
On detection of anAlarm condition, the firewindow will display ‘First Fire’
andassociatedinformation. Formultiple alarmsin the system the fire
windowwilldisplaythefirst and lastalarms.
Thenumber of alarmsis displayed at theright hand side of line5 in the fire
window.

Thestatuswindow displaysthe number of faults,isolates etc.

Themainwindow displays logs, informationtext, menus and device
identification.

3.3 NORMAL OPERATION
When the controller is initially powered up, with no faults or alarms in the
system and the ‘Enable’ key in the ‘off’ position, the following screen is
displayed:

3.3.1 EVENT MONITORING
Theterm ‘event’ isused to describe a change in system statusthat must be
acknowledgedand/or generatesan output.
Examplesof events include:
Mainsfailure
Detection of a firecondition
Operationof ‘EVACUATE’ key
Allevents trigger a response,thecategory of whichdepends on theevent
typeand will beone of the following (in priority order):
FullAlarm or Alert
Pre-Alarm
Fault
Isolation
TestMode
Warning
Information
Whenanevent occurs,itis storedinthe eventlog. Thecontentsof thislog
maybe displayedintwo formats:
Unacceptedand locally acceptedevents
Allevents in chronological order of occurrence
Theevents are stored inchronological order withunaccepted events
markedas outstanding. Theeventlog may hold upto 3000 events; inthe
unlikelyoccurrenceofthelogfillingup,theoldestrecordwillbeoverwritten.
3.3.2 EVENT DISPLAY
The display automatically showsthelast event ofthe category with the
highest priority. With Scroll keys, it is possible to get all events in this
categoryinchronologicalorder.With SoftkeyF5 the user canchangeto
anothercategory (if available).
Important:Category‘FullAlarm/Alert’showsonlythefirstpointofazonein
alarm.Iftwo pointsofonezonearein alarm,only thefirst onewhich wasin
alarmwill bedisplayed. The secondalarmcan only be accessed viathe
menu option ‘View Event Log’.

3.4 OPERATION IN ALARM
3.4.1 SYSTEM RESPONSE
Whenafire condition isdetected,the system respondsasfollows:
1 Theinternal buzzer willsound in a continuous tone.
2 Thered ‘FIRE’ LEDwilllight.
3TheSOUNDERSandNOTIFICATIONSTATUS ‘ACTIVATED’redLEDs
willlight.
If the alarm is initiated by a detector, there may be a delay of from 1 to 10
minutesbeforetheNOTIFICATIONSTATUS‘ACTIVATED’ledlights. Thisis
toallowtimefor thealarmtobeinvestigatedandanyrelevantactiontaken
beforesignalling isinitiated. ACallpointset toevacuatewillinitiate
signallingimmediately. Refer to Section2.6.3.
4 Forthe MZX controllers, the soundersandany otherconfigured
outputswill be activated.
5 TheLCD will displaya message inthe format:
The message format is as follows:
Under‘FIRE’:
Thetoplineshowsthe Zone and Point number of the
devicein alarm.
Thesecondlineshowsthe zonedescription(definedat
configuration).
Thethird lineshows thepoint description(defined at
configuration).
Thefourthlineshows thetype ofalarm.

Theabove isonly displayedif ExtendedAlarm Informationhas been
selectedat configuration.
Under‘First Fire’:
The first three lines from ‘FIRE’ arerepeated.
Thenumberofalarmsisdisplayedontheblack barunderneaththe
first fire information.
3.4.2 SOUNDER SILENCING
When a FIREALARM is received, investigatethe causeof the alarm.
WARNING:
WHEN SEARCHING AN AREA FOR THE SOURCE OF A
FIRE ALARM SIGNAL, WHERE A FIRE ALARM HAS BEEN
INITIATED BY A ‘CARBON MONOXIDE’ FIRE DETECTOR, IT
MUST BE REMEMBERED THAT A CARBON MONOXIDE
FIRE DETECTOR MAY GENERATE AN ALARM BEFORE
OTHER FIRE INDICATORS (SUCH AS SMOKE) ARE
PRESENT.
THIS OCCURS MOST NOTABLY IN DEEP SEATED FIRES IN
DENSELY PACKED MATERIALS, AREAS WHERE FIRES
MAY OCCUR IN CUPBOARDS AND STOREROOMS
REMOTE FROM DETECTORS AND WHERE SMOKE
IMPERVIOUS BARRIERS EXIST BETWEEN THE SEAT OF
THE FIRE AND THE DETECTOR (SUCH AS WITHIN WALL
CAVITIES). THESE FACTORS SHOULD BE CONSIDERED
CAREFULLY BEFORE DECLARING SAFE ANY AREA
WHERE A CARBON MONOXIDE FIRE DETECTOR HAS
RAISED AN ALARM.
Oncethecauseofthealarmhasbeendeterminedandallappropriateaction
hasbeen taken,silencethe soundersas follows:
1 Insertthe key into the frontpanel keyswitch and turn itclockwise to
the‘enable’position.
2Press
‘SILENCE/RESOUND’.

The system will respond as follows:
1 Thesounders will be silenced.
2The‘SOUNDERACTIVATED’LED willextinguish.
3 Allother outputswill remainactivated.
4 TheLCD display willremain showing thetype of alarmandthe full
zoneidentification. The ‘GENERAL’ display windowwill show
‘SounderSIL’.
Ifit is requiredtomanually resoundthesounders,pressing the ‘SILENCE/
RESOUND’ keywillreactivate thesounders.
3.4.3 RESETTING THE CONTROLLER
Whenthesystem isinaFire Alarmstate, Silence must beoperatedbefore
Resetis possible. Thisinterlockisalways present underFire Alarm
condition, even if all sounders are isolated.
Thecontroller shouldalso NOTbe reset untilthe sourceofthe alarmhas
beendeterminedbytheFireBrigadeorthecauseotherwisefound(andthe
conditionremoved).
Oncethe notes above havebeen observed,press the ‘RESET’ key. The
displaywill show thefollowingmessage:

After17 to 20 seconds, theLCD will returntothenormal display(Section
2.3)if no faultsorotherevents are present.
3.4.4 MULTIPLE EVENTS
If,wheninalarmcondition,asecondalarm(ofanotherzone)isreceived,the
system response isdependent on the natureand sourceofthe second
alarmas follows:
1 If the sounders have NOT been silenced, the following willoccur:
2 Theinternal buzzer willcontinue to sound withoutinterruption.
3 TheLCD will continuetodisplaythe alarmmessage for theFIRST fire
alarm and also the last fire alarm.
4 Thealarm count will beincremented.
