1. Introduction
Thank you for choosing the Soil Sample Minimizer. This manual can help you understand the Soil
Sample Minimizer features.
The Soil Sample Minimizer allows gaining of undisturbed subsamples from cylindrical soil samples. This
enables an investigation of the soil samples on different scales. Depending on the application the
sample container is made out of acryl or metal. The size and the volume of the original soil sample
container and the lancet devices for the subsample collection can be manufactured to customer
requirement.
Advantages
•undisturbed soil structure is retained
•Examinations in the µm range possible
An additional service to this manual is our tutorial on the use of the soil sample minimizer which can

1.1. Scope of supply
In the standard delivery included are the holding
chamber of the original sample and the lancet devices
for the subsample collection.
The lancet device for the subsample collection
consists of the sampling ring adapter (on the left in
the picture), the sample container (centre in the
picture), and the sampling ring (on the right in the
picture).
The size and design of the lancet device for the
subsample collection can vary according to the
customer's requirements.

2. General Information
With this sampling device undisturbed samples can be excavated from sample rings for a higher
resolution soil examinations in the lab.
Depending on the size, several samples can be taken simultaneously from one layer of the perforating
cylinder. The acrylic glass sample rings are used in stainless steel cutting sleeves which pre-cut the soil
before it is inserted into the sample rings. The position of the cutting sleeves on their support is
adjustable. Therefore the sampling point can be freely chosen on the surface of the sample ring. The
cutting sleeves are pressed in manually via a crank. In the cutting process, the sample is pressed out of
the large sample ring from below and pressed into the small sample rings. This allows the sample to
expand outside of the partial samples and prevents disturbances caused by pressure on the partial
samples.

3. Operating instructions
To gain subsamples from your soil sample by
using the Soil Sample Minimizer attach the
sample chamber to the mounting fixture for the
soil sample chamber
An Allen wrench of size 5 is needed for mounting.
Make sure to only hand tighten the screw.
Attach the lancet device. Therefore, insert the
sample container into the sampling ring and
attach the sampling ring to the sampling ring
adapter. Attach the lancet device to the mounting
plate in the desired position.

Put the height-adjustable punch in a position
scarcely below the soil sample holding chamber
(1). Afterwards put the height adjustable
mounting plate with the lancet device in a
position scarcely above the sample holding
chamber (2).
To adjust the height of the mounting plate the
locking lever has to be brought into a vertical
position (3).
Afterwards, put the locking lever back into the
lock position (4). Insert the original soil sample
into the sample holding chamber.

Carefully push the punch into the soil sample by
turning the T-handle. The original soil sample is
now pushed into the lancet device with the
smallest soil compaction as possible. When
executing the process as carefully as possible
compaction of the soil material only takes place
in the top of the sampling ring, which is not part
of the finally gained subsample.
Remove the excess material from the lancet
device. Bring the punch into a position below the
holding chamber. Remove the soil sampling ring
from the sampling ring adapter or from the
mounting plate.

Carefully remove the subsample container from
the sampling ring. Remove excessive material
from the subsample container. The result is a non
compacted, undisturbed subsample of the
original soil sample.
4. Maintenance
The Soil Sample Minimizer is maintenance-free. However, we recommend cleaning the device carefully
after use to protect the mechanics from damage.
