The converter isapplicable for allthe existing communication
software and interfacehardware without anysoftware modifications
for the previousworking mechanism basedon RS-232.
Areliable and stablepoint-to-point and point-to-multipoint
communication can beensured by UT-217E photoelectric isolation
interface converter.For point-to-multipoint communication,as
many as 32interface facilities ofRS-422 or RS-485standard can
be connected toeach converter,and a highdata transmission rate
of 300-115.2KBPScan be achieved.Power indicator lightand
data traffic indicator light are also available with the converter
for malfunction indication.Twoconversion communication modes
including RS-232 toRS-422 and
RS-232 to RS-485are supported.

IV. Hardware installment and application
Read the user manual carefully before installing the
UT-217E photoelectric isolation interface converter.
Connect the attached communication cable to RS-232
interface, and insert the power supply converter to power
socket. The product adopts the DB-9/RJ-45 general used
connector for input and output interface without jumper
setting for RS-485 or RS-422 automatic communication
mode. Either twisted pair cable or shielded cable is
applicable for easy installation or un-installation.
T/R+T/R-represents sending and receiving the A+/B-,
RXD+/RXD- represents receiving the A+/B-,VCC
represents power input or output, GND represents public

converter can convert the single-ended RS-232 signal into
balance differe nced RS-422 or RS-485 signal. The built-in
photoelectric isolator canprovide an isolationvoltage of ashigh
as 2500Vrms.Also, thereis a rapidtransient voltage suppression
protector for protec tion of RS-422/RS-485 interface with advanced
TVS(TRANSIENT VOLTAGE SUPPRESSOR) technology
adopted. Under normal conditions, the TVS tube isin the state
of high resistance.However, when both ends of the TVS tube are
hit by a transient high energy, theimpedance at bothends can be
depressed by theTVS at a very highspeed, and afterabsorbing a
high current, the volt age between the two ends is suppressed
and kept ata pre-set value,therefore no damageis caused tothe
electrical components behindby the transienthigh voltage impact.
The protector caneffectively restrain lightning or ESD (electro
static discharge) with a protection voltage of 600W on eachline
for lightning surge and surge voltage or transient over voltage
possibly caused upby various reasons,and at the same time, a
high-speed tra nsmission of RS-422/RS-485 interface is ensured
by the tiny capacitance between thepoles. Through aDB9 female
connector RS-232 interface is connected to other interfaces
compatible wit h RS-232C standard, and for RS-422 and RS-485
interfaces RJ- 45 and 4PIN connector is tobe used forconnection.
The unique I/Ocircuit of the internal zero delay auto transceiver
contained in theconverter controls the data stream direction
automatically without anyhandshaking signal (forexample RTS,
DTR etc). The converter is plug-and-play without any jumper
settings needed formode shift between full duplex (RS-422)
and half duplex(RS-485).
I. Summary

Half duplex communicationuse the twolines of T/R+ and T/R-,
point-to-point and point-to-multipointfull duplex communication
use the fourlines of T/R+, T/R-, RXD+ and RXD-.
UT-217EEinterface converter supportsthe following 4
communication modes:

3. Point-to-point 2-linehalf duplex
4. Point-to-multipoint 2-linehalf duplex
In order toprevent the signalreflection or interferencewhen
converter is usedin full-duplex orhalf-duplex mode.

VI. Problems and resolutions
1. Data communicationfailure
