INSTALL THE BATTERY PACK
Install the battery pack
by sliding it
on its track
upwards until
it is firmly in
place.
Remove the battery
pack by pressing on the
lock knob arid sliding
downward.
CHARGINGTHE HANDSET BATTERIES
The handset of your VT 1980 cordless telephone is powered by
rechargeablebatteries.The battery pack should becharged
if:
The phoneproduces a doublebeep
indicating a BATT LOW condition
when you pressthe
ONlOFF key.
The phone double beeps when
you press ON/OFF
The BATT LOW indicator is flashing.
The handsetseems completelydead
and does not beep when you press
the keys.

indicatorwill lightto show the handset is seated properlyandthe batteries
are charging.

It is recommended that the
battery pack be charged initiallyfor
24 hours. You can use your
telephone before that with
diminishedcapacity, but it
is best
to let the battery pack charge fully,
To maximizethe charge capacity of
the NiCadbattery pack, recharge
the batteryfor severalcycles. Once
you have properly conditioned the rechargeablebattery, the maximum
batterytife should be
4 hours of continuoustalk time or 5 days of standby.
After initialcharging, a typical maintenancecharge is
8 hours.
CAUTION: To reducethe risk of fire or injury, readand follow the
instructions.
1. Use only VTECH battery.
2. Do not open or mutilatethe battery. Releasedelectrolyte is corrosive
andmaycausedamage
to the eyesor skin. It maybetoxic if swallowed.
3. Exercisecare in handling batteries in order not to short the batterywith
conductingmaterialssuch as rings, bracelets, and keys.The batteryor
conductor may overheat andcause burns.
4. Do notdispase of the battery in a fire. The cell may explode.
IF THE BATTERIES DON'T RECHARGE
The battery pack can be'recharged many times, but if you get a low-
battery signal even after 24 hours of charging, the batterypack should be
replaced.

SETTING UP YOUR VT 1980
1. Choose an area near an electrical outlet and a telephone wall jack.
2. CHARGE THE HANDSET BATTERIES BEFORE USE.
The batteriesrechargeautomaticallywhenever the handset
is inthe base
unit cradle. The batteries shouldbechargedfor
24 hours before usingyour
phone
for thefirst time.
3. Plug the AC poweradaptorintoanelectricaloutletand the DC connector
to the back of the base.
4. Setthe DP / 77 switchon
the baseunit.
If you have
touch tone service on
your phone line, set the
switch
to TT. If you have
rotary service, set the
switch to DP.
5. Oncethe batterypack is
fullycharged, connectthe
telephone line cord into
the jack at the rear of the
base unit. Plugthe other
end into a telephone wall
jack. Makesure the plugs
snap securely into place.

6. CHECK FOR A DIAL TONE.
After the batteriesare charged, rotate the base unit antenna to an upright
position.Next,pickupthe handsetandpressthe
ON/OFF key.The PHONE
LED should light up, andyou should hear a dialtone. If not, see INCASE
OF DIFFICULTIES.

3. INSTALL THE MOUNTING
Start the screw holes by lightly
tapping a nail into the marks you
madeon the wall. Removethe nail
from the wall. Now
slip the
mountingsleevesontothe screws
as shown, with the smaller end
of
the sleevetowardthe screw head.
Insertthe screwsintotheholesyou
started.Tightenthescrewsuntilthe
large end of the mountingsleeve
isflat againstthe wall.

1. CHOOSE A SPOT NEAR AN
ELECTRICALOUTLETAND

TELEPHONE JACK.
Your phone requiresa modular
telephone jack and a standard
electrical outlet
(120V AC). The
power cord is six feet long; make
sure there
is an electrical outlet
withinreachof the base.The outlet
should not be controlledby a wall
switch.
If the switchis ever tumed
off, the phonewill not operate.
2. CHOOSE AND MARK THE
MOUNTING POSITION.
The mounting screws should
screw intoawoodenstudwithinthe
wall -theywillnot holdsecurelyin
wallboardalone. Locateawall stud
inthe areawhere you want
to install
your telephone. Use the

mark the screw positions on the

of the talking

volume during OFF mode.
DOWN KEY
Usedto decrease the earpiece
volume during a call.

MAKING CALLS
Pick upthe handset and press
ON/OFF. Whenyou hear adialtone,
dial the number.The PHONE LED
on the handsetand IN USE LEDon
the base unit
will light.
If you make a mistake when
dialing, pressONOFFagainto hang
up, then press ONlOFF to get the
dialtone again.
You must always press ON/OFF
before you can dial on the
handset.(Except when using the
EMGCY key.)
ANSWERING CALLS
When an incoming call is ringing,
theIN
USE LEDonthe base unitand
PHONE LED on the handset
will
flash.
To answer acallwhen the handset
is
in the base, just pick up the
handset.
To answer acallwhen the handset
is awayfrom thebaseunit,just press
any keyon the handset.This isvery
useful
in a dark environment;you do
not have to fumble around looking
for the ONOFFkey to answer the call.
DISCONNECTING
TO MAKECALLS:Press ON/OFF
dialthe number

To end a call, either place the handset back in the base, or press
ONlOFF on the handset.

TEMPORARY TONE
If you have a rotary (dial-pulse)telephone service. (DP / TT switchis set
to DP),this feature allowsyou to enter specialcodes andtones to operate
answeringmachines, useelectronicbankingservices,callingcards,or other
special services.
First
, dial the callnormally.
Then activate the Temporary Tone
feature by pressing
TONE (the *key).
You can then press the numbers or
symbols
you need, andyour phone will
sendthe proper signals.
To endthecall
, press ONlOFF orplace
the handset
back in the base unit. The
phonewill automaticallygo backto rotary
(dial-pulse)service.

This feature isonly for rotary servicetelephone lines.
PROGRAMMINGTHE RINGER TYPE
The handset ringer is capable of four differenttypes of ringingtones.

MEMORY DIALING (SPEED DIALING)
The VT 1980 can store up to 21 different phone numbers that you can
dial simply by pressing MEM and the corresponding locationcode (01-20),
or simply by pressingthe one-touch EMGCY key.
TO PROGRAMMINGSPEED DIAL NUMBERS
The Handsetmust be OFF.
1. Press MEM. The PHONE LED will
blink
to indicate that you are in the
programmingmode.
2. Usingthe dial pad, enterthenumber
you want to store. The number can be
up to 16 digits long.

To dial using the EMGCY key you can simply press EMGCY on the
handset.The
phone will automatically accessdialtone, anddialthe number
you have storedinthe EMGCY location.
You can also dial the EMGCY number by pressing ON/OFF in
advance,andthen pressthe EMGCYkey.
TO CHANGE OR REPLACE A SPEED DIAL
NUMBER
To change or replace a stored number in speed dial, simply enter the

new number and store it in the memory locationyou wish to change.
