INSTALLATION AND MAINTENANCE
Mounting the Thermostat
Install the thermostat at 5 feet (1.5m) above the floor in an area with good air circulation at average
temperature. Avoid locations with drafts or dead spots behind doors, hot or cold air ducts, sunlight
or radiant heat from appliances, concealed pipes or chimneys and unconditioned areas such as
outside walls behind the thermostat.
The wallplate anchors should be spaced 3.5 inches (90 mm) apart in a vertical direction. Pull wires
through the backplate and connect to the appropriate terminals as defined in the Wiring
Configuration.
Mounting the Remote Sensors
Remote indoor sensors (available from your Vantage Dealer) should be installed in locations similar
to those noted in the directions for Mounting the Thermostat above. The thermostat will
automatically detect the presence of a remote sensor. A remote indoor sensor automatically
overrides the thermostat’s own temperature sensor. Connect 1 indoor sensor allows the
thermostat to be placed in a utility room. For temperature averaging connect 4 or 9 indoor sensors
(see pages 38 and 39).
Outdoor sensors should be mounted in shaded locations, out of direct sunlight. The thermostat will
automatically detect an external sensor and display its readings. It is possible to connect 1 outdoor
sensor and 1, 4 or 9 external indoor sensors at the same time.
Cleaning the Thermostat
The thermostat can be cleaned with a soft cloth lightly dampened with isopropyl alcohol.

Thermostat Wiring Options
Option 1: Standard wiring configuration
Wherever possible, Vantage Controls recommends wiring the thermostat to the HVAC equipment
with a dedicated wire for each connection. Where no ground (common) wire has been included, a
new ground wire can be pulled to the thermostat mounting to provide power to the electronic
thermostat.

Page 19
Option 2: Auxiliary Switch
Use an Auxiliary Switch for installations where a ground (common) wire is not available. This
Auxiliary Switch allows for the installation of the thermostat without the need to pull any new wire.
The Auxiliary Switch allows the installer to use one of the existing wires for the ground wire and
then multiplex one of the outputs (W,Y,G, etc.) onto that ground wire. Note that the figure below
shows the W terminal being multiplexed, but any one of the outputs could be multiplexed.
The Auxiliary Switch consists of two components, a small jumper which is wired between terminals
at the thermostat, and a small adapter which connects inline near the HVAC equipment.
Please note that the supplied ‘jumper’ is not and cannot be replaced by a simple wire. Order the
Auxiliary Switch separately from Vantage, Part Number, STAT-AUX.

Page 20
Option 3: Use a Local Ground Connection
A third option when a ground (common) wire is not available at the thermostat in retrofit cases is to
pull a new wire to connect the C terminal on the thermostat to the closest available household
ground. This will work in most cases because the common of the transformer in the HVAC
equipment is also typically tied to household ground. If the HVAC equipment transformer is not tied
to ground, the thermostat will not function.
Note: This Option is less desirable. It should be used with caution and connected by a qualified
technician.
