Introduction
The purpose of this document is to provide an overview of getting started with the
VAB-820 board using Yocto with an OpenEmbedded filesystem.
The VAB-820 Linux BSP v3.0.2 is developed based on the NXP fsl-yocto-3.14.28_1.0.0
(Yocto 1.7 Dizzy) and it enables hardware features that are defined on the VAB-820 board.

This section explains the setup requirements for booting from a Micro SD card or the SPI
ROM. A precompiled image is provided in the “EVK” folder of the BSP.
2.1. Booting from a Micro SD Card

imx6qvab820.sdcard image allows the board to run entirely from a Micro
SD card.
The first step is to copy this image onto a Micro SD card. Insert a Micro SD card into your
Linux host machine and make sure it is not mounted. Copy the SD Card image onto the
Micro SD card with the command below, replacing <device name> with the correct value
for the card, for example “sdb”.

Next, on the VAB-820, set the J11 boot select jumper to the Micro SD position
shown below.

Insert the prepared Micro SD card into the VAB-820, connect an HDMI display, and power
on the device to initiate the boot process.
When the boot process is completed, you will see the OpenEmbedded desktop.

2.2. Booting from the SPI ROM
The VAB-820 supports booting from the SPI ROM while loading the kernel and root
filesystem from eMMC.
The first step is to prepare a Micro SD card with the default image according to section 2.1.

mass storage device such as a USB thumb drive. Make sure the J11 boot select jumper is set
to Micro SD boot then insert the Micro SD card and the USB thumb drive into the VAB-820.
To check that the board has correctly setup the SPI ROM as an MTD block device, use the
following command:
$ ls /dev/mtdblock*
/dev/mtdblock0
Please note that if you have previously saved U-Boot parameters, it is recommended to
clear that area of the SPI ROM with the following command:
$ sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/mtdblock0 bs=512 seek=1536 count=16
Flash the U-Boot binary from the mass storage device onto the SPI ROM:
$ sudo dd if=u-boot.imx of=/dev/mtdblock0 bs=512 seek=2
Copy the root filesystem image from the mass storage device onto the eMMC storage.
$ sudo dd if=via-image-gui-imx6qvab820.sdcard of=/dev/mmcblk0 bs=1M
In order to boot from the SPI ROM make sure the J11 boot select jumper is set to SPI ROM
boot.

Next, connect an HDMI display, and power on the device to initiate the boot process.
When the boot process is completed, you will see the OpenEmbedded desktop.

2.3. Setting up U-Boot Parameters
The first step is to connect the host machine and the VAB-820 through the COM 2
(connector J5). Use a serial port communication program such as PuTTY, GtkTerm, or
Minicom, to configure the serial port setting and connect to the debug console. There you
will be able to see the U-Boot boot log and adjust settings in the U-Boot console.

Next, power on the VAB-820 to initiate the boot process. When prompted, press any key
to stop the boot process, and enter the U-Boot console as illustrated by the screenshot
below.

To list the current U-Boot parameters, use the following command:
=> printenv
Make sure the printout message includes “bootcmd=run bootcmd_auto”.
The default “bootcmd” parameter is set to auto detect the board location by first
attempting to load the kernel from the Micro SD card. If it is not detected it continues to
boot from the eMMC.
To load the kernel from the specified device, refer to the two examples below.
To load the kernel from the Micro SD card:
=> setenv bootcmd 'run bootcmd_sd'
=> saveenv
=> boot
To load the kernel from the eMMC:
=> setenv bootcmd 'run bootcmd_mmc'

2.4. Restoring Default U-Boot Parameters
If the U-Boot parameters have been modified, the “destroyenv” command in the U-Boot
console can restore the factory default settings. To restart the device, use the “reset”
command.
=> destroyenv

2.5. Using the OpenEmbedded Console
The first step is to connect the host machine and the VAB-820 through the COM 2
(connector J5). Use a serial port communication program such as PuTTY, GtkTerm, or
Minicom, to connect to the debug console. There you will be able to see the U-Boot boot
log and adjust settings in the U-Boot console. Next, power on the VAB-820 to initiate the
boot process. When the boot process is completed you will be prompted to login.

This section guides you through setting up the build environment for development. All
instructions are based on using Ubuntu 12.04 LTS or higher versions.
To make sure that the build process completes successfully, we recommend at least
120GB of disk space, and 15GB of combined memory and swap space on the host machine.
3.1. Configuring Ubuntu
The following packages are required for the Yocto development environment. The
required packages can be installed using the bash script below:

The tool to create images for use with the U-Boot boot loader, "mkimage

different packages in Ubuntu 12.04 and in newer Ubuntu releases.
On Ubuntu 12.04 install it as below.

On Ubuntu 14.04 and newer versions install it as below.

4.1. Extracting the VAB-820 BSP
Use the following command to extract the contents of the BSP.

This script has the following optional parameter:
• -b: set the name of the build directory. For example “-b build-vab820” in the

4.3. Building an SD Card Image
This BSP provides the “via-image-gui” Yocto image as default. Use the “bitbake” command
to create an SD Card compatible image.

The VAB-820 Linux BSP v3.0.2 supports the following display devices:
•HDMI monitor
•AUO 10.4” G104XVN01.0 LVDS panel (1024 x 768)
•AUO 7” G070VW01 V0 LVDS panel (800 x 480)
5.1.1. Setting Up the U-Boot Display Parameters for a Single Display

To set the HDMI monitor as the display output, use the following command:

In order to confirm the settings are correct use the following command to list the new
U-Boot parameters:
=> printenv hdmi

Before setting an LVDS panel as the display output make sure the LVDS backlight power
select jumper is set to +12V and the LVDS panel power select jumper is set to +3.3V as
shown below.

To set the AUO 10.4” G104XVN01.0 LVDS panel as the display output, use the following

5.2. Setting Up Dual Displays
An HDMI monitor and an LVDS panel can be used to create a dual display set up for the
VAB-820, with support for clone and extension modes.
 HDMI monitor and AUO 10.4” G104XVN01.0 LVDS panel
 HDMI monitor and AUO 7” G070VW01 V0 LVDS panel
5.2.1. Setting Up the U-Boot Display Parameters for Dual Displays
Due to system limitations, the max resolution suggested for the HDMI monitor in the dual
display set up is 1280x720. To change the HDMI resolution to 1280x720 use the following
command:
# xrandr --output HDMI --mode 1280x720 --rate 60 --output LVDS --mode building
The next step is to set the U-Boot display parameters for dual display. (Note: For the dual
display set up you must use an HDMI device and one of the LVDS panels supported in the
BSP).
To set HDMI monitor and an AUO 10.4” G104XVN01.0 (1024 x 768) LVDS panel as the
display devices, use the following command:
=> setenv hdmilvds_g104 ‘video=mxcfb0:dev=hdmi,1920x1080M@60,bpp=16 video=mxcfb1:dev=ldb,LDB-
XGA,if=RGB24 ldb=sin0’
