XX103 Rev 902 VM5094/VM5124/VM5154 High-Resolution Monitors Introduction •• 1
Introduction
The information in this manual provides installation, operation and maintenance of the VM5094, VM5124 and
VM5154 High-Resolution Monochrome Monitors. These units should only be installed by a qualified technician
using approved materials in conformance with federal, state, and local codes. Read these instructions
thoroughly before beginning an installation.
The VM5094, VM5124 and VM5154 Monochrome Monitors, with a horizontal resolution of 1000 lines, produce
crisp, high-contrast pictures. The VM5094 has a 9-inch (230 mm) screen, the VM5124 has a 12-inch (305 mm)
screen and the VM5154 has a 15-inch (381 mm) screen. These compact units are housed in a rugged yet
attractively-styled cabinet with a convenient carrying handle. Both units are dual scanning (EIA and CCIR) and
incorporate a universal power supply that accommodates 120 or 230 VAC. Both a 120 VAC and 230 VAC line
cord are supplied with each monitor.
Loop-through connectors and a 75-ohm termination switch are provided on the rear-panel, along with the
removable line cord. Operating controls for power, brightness, contrast and horizontal and vertical hold are
located behind a front panel door to provide an uncluttered look and prevent accidental movement of the controls.
A power LED indicator is located outside the front panel door for easy viewing. Compatible horizontal and vertical
time constants allow for stable playback from a video cassette recorder (VCR).
Rack mounting kits are available that allow the monitors to be installed in a standard EIA 19-inch rack,
VM5093RK (double) and VM5093RK-1 (single) for the VM5094 monitor, VM5123RK (single) for the VM5124

Installation
Unpacking and Inspection
All Vicon equipment is inspected and tested before leaving the factory. It is the carrier’s responsibility to deliver
the equipment in the same condition in which it left the factory.
Inspection for Visible Damage
Immediately inspect the cartons upon delivery. On all copies of the carrier’s freight bill, make a note of any
visible damage.
Make sure the carrier’s agent (the person making the delivery) signs the note on all copies of the bill. If the agent
does not have claim forms, contact the carrier’s office.
Inspection for Concealed Damage
As soon as possible after delivery, unpack the unit and inspect it for concealed damage. Do not discard the
carton or packing materials. If the unit is damaged, contact the carrier immediately and request forms for filing a
damage claim. Make arrangements for a representative of the carrier to inspect the damaged equipment.
If the equipment must be returned for repair, follow the Shipping Instructions at the end of this document.
Physical Installation
Caution: Do not install this monitor in an excessively hot location or in any way obstruct the ventilation holes.
Premature component failure or damage to the cabinet may result.
Note: When the monitor is not to be used for several days, it is advisable to disconnect the AC power cord from
the utility outlet.
1. Plug the power cord into an applicable utility outlet.
2. Connect the coaxial cable from the video equipment to the VIDEO IN connector on the monitor. If there is
only one monitor in the system or if this is the last monitor in the system configuration, set the termination
switch to 75 ohms (ON). In a loop through configuration, set the termination switch to High Impedance
(OFF). See Figure 1.
3. If the loop through configuration is desired, connect a coaxial cable from the VIDEO OUT connector to the

Operation
Warning: This product includes critical mechanical and electrical parts that are essential to prevent leakage
of x-ray radiation from the unit. For continued safety and protection, replacement of critical
components should only be performed by qualified service personnel experienced and equipped for
the task.
Refer to Figure 2 and accompanying table for the location and function of the of the operating controls and
indicators.
Note: Be sure that the termination switch is set to ON (75 ohms) or OFF (high impedance) as required and that
a standard 1.0 V p-p video signal is applied to the monitor’s video input.
To turn the monitor on, press the Power switch. The power LED illuminates. To adjust the brightness and
contrast controls, use those controls to obtain optimum picture quality. If picture quality is poor, check the
camera or other video source for proper adjustment.
POWER ON/OFF Switch –Provides power on-off control.
LED Power Indicator –Illuminates to indicate when power is on.
HORIZONTAL HOLD Control –Permits adjustment of horizontal stability. In the event the picture
“tears” leftward or rightward, turn the control clockwise or counterclockwise until picture stabilizes.
VERTICAL HOLD Control –Permits adjustment of vertical stability. In the event the picture “rolls”
upward or downward, turn the control clockwise or counterclockwise until picture stabilizes.
BRIGHTNESS Control –Permits adjustment of the overall shading and picture brightness; used to
compensate for differences in room lighting.
CONTRAST Control –Permits the adjustment of the relationship between the light and dark
portions of the picture; when properly adjusted, it is possible to observe a fine gradation between
blacks, grays and whites.
VIDEO INPUT Terminal –BNC connector accepts the video signal from a related vide component
(i.e. camera or VCR).
VIDEO OUTPUT Terminal –BNC connector provides loop-through of the input signal to the input
signal of related video equipment (i.e. VCR or another monitor).
75 OHM Termination Switch –Provides convenient selection of High Impedance or 75 ohm video
input impedance. The switch should be set to OFF for loop-through configuration and to ON when
video signal is terminated at the monitor.

8•• Coaxial Cable Recommendations XX103 Rev 902 VM5094/VM5124/VM5154 High-Resolution Monitors
Coaxial Cable Recommendations
Caution: Careful selection of proper cable is essential to obtain the best performance from this equipment. Vicon assumes no
responsibility for poor performance when cables other than those recommended, or equivalent, are installed. In all cases, coaxial
cable impedance should be 75 ohms.
Materials
Use only a pure copper center conductor. Do not use a copper-plated steel or aluminum center conductor, as they will
result in poor quality video. Solid-core bare copper conductor is the best type, where flexing and bending will be
minimal. If severe bending and flexing is required for installation, use a stranded center conductor. Never exceed the
manufacturers minimum bend radius specification. Use cellular (foam) polyethylene dielectric except where heavy
moisture exists. For moisture conditions, use solid polyethylene dielectric cable with a heavy exterior insulation. The
shield must be copper braid providing 95% or better coverage.
Cable Types
The cable types listed below are the most common 75-ohm types used. They vary in size (diameter), dielectric type and
net DC resistance. The larger cable results in a lower DC resistance and better video quality, with increased difficultyin
handling and installation. Let the required picture quality and cable distance provide a guide in choosing the best cable
type. For cables other than the approved Vicon types below, contact the manufacturers listed below. Note that “BC”
refers to barecopper and “TC” refers to tinned copper.
