1 Connect video cable
Make surethat boththeViewPanel®and
the computer are powered OFF.
Connect the video cable from the back
of your computer to the analog and/or
the DigitalVideo Interface (DVI) inputs
on the back of the display depending on
the signal of your computer(s). If you
havehavebothanalogand digital
inputs, see Using theViewPanel in this
guide to toggle between the two ports.
Macintosh
®
users: Connect a
Macintosh adapter (part No.VMAC-1)
tothevideocable,then totheViewPanel.
To order an adapter for older Macintosh
systems send an email to:
[email protected], or call
ViewSonic®customer service (see the
Customer Support section of this guide).
You will need to provide your
ViewPanel's serial number.
2 Connect AC/DC adapter and
power cord
Connect the power cord to a properly
grounded AC (i.e., wall) outlet, then to
the AC/DC adapter and to the
ViewPanel as shown below.
3 Power-ON ViewPanel and
computer
Power-ON theViewPanel, THEN power-
ON the computer.
Installation is complete!

4 Install Display Optimization files
(INF and ICM files)
(1) Insert the ViewSonic Wizard CD-
ROM into your computer’s CD-ROM
drive.
NOTE: If your computer does not have
a CD-ROM drive, see Customer
Supportinthis manual.
(2) Wait for the CD-ROM to auto-start.
NOTE: If the CD-ROM does not auto-
start: double-click on the CD-ROM icon
in Windows Explorer, then double-click
on install.exe.
(3) Follow the on-screen instructions.

Installation-Wall Mount (optional)
To get a wall mounting kit, contactViewSonic®or your local dealer. TheVG181 is
compatible with the VESA wall mounting standards. To convert the desk-mounted
VG181 to a wall-mount installation, do the following:
1 Disconnect DC power.
Makesurethepoweristurnedoff
andthendisconnecttheDCpower
cordfromthebackofthe
ViewPanel.
2 Lie the ViewPanel face
down on a flat surface.
Besurenothingsharpcanscratch
orpuncturetheLCDsurface(the
faceoftheViewPanel).
3 Pull the square-like cover
from the back of the
ViewPanel.
Theplasticcovershouldhang
overthebackoftheneckofthe
ViewPaneltoexposethefour
screwstothewallmount.
4 Remove the four screws to
disconnect the base from
the back of the ViewPanel.
Storethebaseinasafeplace.
5 Attach the ViewPanel to the
wall mounting kit.
Followtheinstructionsthatcome
withthewallmountingkit.

Using the ViewPanel
Setting theTiming Mode
The timing mode consists of the resolution and refresh rate (vertical
frequency). After setting the timing mode, use the ViewSonic OnView®
controls in this section to make adjustments. The recommended timing mode
for this ViewPanel is: 1280 x 1024 @ 60Hz.
To set the Timing Mode:
1Set the resolution: Right-click on the Windows®desktop > Properties
> Settings > Desktop Area > set the resolution (example 1280 x 1024
@ 60Hz).
2Set the refresh rate: See your graphic card's user guide for instructions.
NOTE: To minimize the adjustments required for an optimal screen
image, select a timing mode from the Preset Timing Modes table
below.
3For best image quality, activate AUTO TUNE from the IMAGE ADJUST
menu.
4If necessary, make small adjustments using H POSITION and
VPOSITION (Horizontal Position and Vertical Position) from the
IMAGE ADJUST menu until the screen image is completely visible.
(The black border around the edge of the screen should barely "touch"
the illuminated "active area" of the ViewPanel.)
WARNING: Do NOT set the graphics card in your computer to exceed the
maximum refresh rate for each resolution shown below in the Maximum Refresh
Rates table. Doing so may result in permanent damage to your ViewPanel.

Landscape/Portrait Modes*
The VP181 ViewPanel®can operate in either Landscape or Portrait mode
(see below).
To switch from Landscape (default) to Portrait modes, do the following:
(1) Face the front of ViewPanel. (2) Pull the bottom of the ViewPanel
toward you to tilt the bottom away from the base. (3) After tilting the
ViewPanel, manually rotate the VP181 clockwise 90°.
To switch from Portrait to Landscape mode, follow steps 1 - 3 above, but
manually rotate the VP181 panel counter-clockwise 90°.
*PerfectPortrait software is compatible with most PCI and AGP graphics
(video) cards. For information on compatible graphics cards and approved
hardware configurations, go to the ViewSonic website, http://
www.viewsonic.com, and select the following path: Customer support >
Support options > Document area > PPCHART.XLS. The PPCHART.XLS
spreadsheet will provide information on compatibility with your graphics
card.
To Raise and Lower the display
You can easily raise and lower the display panel (the head) manually. As
you face the front of the display, take hold of each side of the head and pull
upward or down to meet your personal preference.

Adjusting the Screen Image
Adjust the screen image using the buttons on the Front Control Panel to
select from the menus and make adjustments. For descriptions of each control
see the next few pages.
IMPORTANT:Themainmenushownbelowandsubmenusonfollowing
pagesareavailableonlywhenconnectedto an analog source. TheDigital
source uses only the brightness and contrast control with no menus.

Main Menu
The Main Menu is shown below.
CONTRAST adjusts the difference between the image background
(black level) and the foreground (white level).
[▼] decreases contrast, [▲] increases contrast.
BRIGHTNESS adjusts background black level of the screen
image.
[▼] decreases brightness, [▲] increases brightness.

Image Adjust Menu
The Image Adjust menu is shown below.
AUTO TUNE automatically sizes, centers, and fine tunes the
video signal to eliminate "noise" and distortion.
Press [2] to activate.
Shortcut: Before displaying the Main Menu, press [2] to activate AUTO
TUNE.
H POSITION (Horizontal Position) moves the screen image to
the left or to the right.
[▼] moves screen image left, [▲] moves screen image right.
V POSITION (Vertical Position) moves the screen image up or
down.
[▼] moves screen image down, [▲] moves screen image up.
H SIZE (Horizontal Size) adjusts the width of screen image.
[▼] decreases the width of screen image, [▲] increases the width
of screen image.
Phase minimizes the video distortion.
Press[▼] or [▲] to adjust to your preference.
Zoom expands and contracts the entire screen image.
[▼] Expands the screen image.
[▲] Contracts the screen image.

ViewMatch®Color Menu
The ViewMatch Color menu is shown below:
Color Temp Select provides several color options: several preset
color temperatures and User Color which allows you to adjust red
(R), green (G), and blue (B). The factory setting for this product is
9300K (9300Kelvin).
Press [▼] or [▲] to scroll to your selection.
9300K —Adds blue to the screen image for cooler white (used in
most office settings with fluorescent lighting).
6500K —Adds red to the screen image for warmer white and richer
red.
5400K —Adds green to the screen image for a darker color.
5000K —Adds blue and green to the screen image for a darker
color.
User Color —Individual adjustments for red, green, and blue.
Press [▲] to increase blue.

Advanced Menu
Selecting theAdvanced Menu from the main menu takes you to the
submenu shown below.
Scaling adjusts the video input signal to the screen size using the
following options.
Press[▼]or[▲]toselectfromthefollowingoptions:
1:1 adjusts the video signal so that the height and width of the
picturearethesame.
Sharpness adjuststheclarityandfocusofthescreenimage.
Press[▼]or[▲]toadjusttheimagesharpness.
ViewMeter®displays the timing mode (video signal input) coming
fromthegraphics cardinyourcomputer.Seepage8forinstructions
onchanging the resolution.Also, see yourgraphiccard'suser guide
forinstructionsonchangingtherefreshrate (vertical frequency).
NOTE: SeethePresetTimingModeschartonpage8.Example:
VESA®1280 x 1024 @ 60Hz (recommended)meansthatthe
resolutionis1280 x 1024 and the refresh rate is 60Hertz.

Setup Menu
The Setup Menu takes you to the submenu shown below.
Input Select allows you to toggle between two input ports –
between an analog and digital signal.
Press [▼] or [▲] to select an input signal.
Language Select allows you to choose the language used in the
menus and control screens.
Press [▼] or [▲] to select a language (English, French, German,
Spanish, or Italian).
OSD Position allows you to move the on-screen display menus
and control screens.
Press [▼] or [▲] to move the OSD.
OSD Timeout sets the length of time the on-screen display
screen is displayed. For example, with a “30 second”setting, if a
control is not pushed within 30 seconds, the display screen
disappears.
Memory Recall returns adjustments to the original factory
settings if the display is operating in a factory Preset Timing
Mode listed in this user guide.
Exception: This control does not affect changes made with the
User Color control.
Note: Using this control resets color to 9300K.

Troubleshooting
No power
•PressPowerbuttonON.
•MakesureACpowercordissecurelyconnectedtotheDCpowersupplyand
thepowersupplyisfirmlyconnectedtotheViewPanel.
•Pluganotherelectricaldevice(likearadio)intothepoweroutlettoverifythat
theoutletissupplyingpropervoltage.
•MakesureallshortcablesareinstalledseeInstallationsection.
Power on but no screen image
•Make sure the video cable supplied with the ViewPanel®is tightly secured
tothevideooutputportonthebackofthecomputer.Iftheotherendofthe
video cable is not attached permanently to theViewPanel, tightly secure it
to theViewPanel.
•Adjust brightness.
Wrong or abnormal colors
•If any colors (red, green, or blue) are missing, check the video cable to
make sure it is securely connected. Loose or broken pins in the cable
connector could cause an improper connection.
•Connect theViewPanel to another computer.
•CheckViewMatch®color menu for proper settings
Entire screen image scrolls (rolls) vertically
•Make sure video input signals are within theViewPanel's specified
frequency range.
•Try theViewPanel with another power source, graphics card, or computer
system.
•Connect the video cable securely.
Control buttons do not work
•Pressonlyonebuttonat a time.
