This manual is a supplement to the Operator’s
Manual for D4/D6. The additional material contains
user instructions that apply only to the SOLAS
version of D4/D6.
Read through the instructions in
this manual and in the Operator’s Manual for the D4/
D6 before using your D4/D6 SOLAS engine.
Incorrect operation can lead to personal injury and
damage to products or property. Therefore, read
through the operator’s manual very carefully before
starting the engine or performing any service work.
Make sure that warning and information symbols on
the engine are clearly visible and legible. Replace
symbols that have been damaged or have been
painted over.
If there is something that is unclear or that you feel
unsure about, contact your Volvo Penta dealer for
assistance.

Introduction
Volvo Pentas D4/D6-SOLAS engine is designed
to comply with the requirements applicable to the
directive 2014/90/EU.
In order to fulll the demands of the directive, the
following alterations and additions have been made to
the SOLAS-D4/D6:
1. Alteration: Starter motor draining sealed.
Function: The engine can run even in water up to
the center of the crankshaft.
2. Alteration: A unique sea water pump.
Function: Increased space between sea water
pump housing and impeller, can withstand dry
running for an extended period of time without
damaging the impeller.
3. Alteration: Alternator moved to a higher position.
Function: The engine can run even in water up to
the center of the crankshaft.
4. Alteration: Special impeller kit
Function: Unique material in impeller, can
withstand dry running for an extended period of
time without damaging the impeller
5. Addition: A capsizing relay is mounted in the boat
and is connected to the engine's electrical system.
Function: The engine stops automatically if the
boat capsizes.
6. Addition: An oil trap has been added between
the CCV seperator and air lter.
Function: The oil trap prevents oil leakage from
the engine if the boat capsizes.
7. Addition: A valve is mounted between the engine
and the crankcase ventilation lter.
Function: The valve prevents oil leakage from the
engine if the boat capsizes.

In case of a safety stop/ tilt-switch deploy-
ment
If the engine has stopped automatically due to the
boat capsizing, it can be restarted again once the
boat's position in the water has stabilized.
After an automatic safety stop, the ignition is still
turned on and must therefore be turned o󰀨 before
attempting to start the engine again.
Follow the starting procedure in the D4/D6 Operator’s
Manual.
1. Turn ignition o󰀨.
2. Turn ignition on again.
3. Start the engine.
Special demands for engine operation in
cold climates
To guarantee safe starting of the SOLAS-D4/D6 in
cold climates, it is the boat owner's responsibility
to ensure that the following demands are fullled
concerning oil, batteries and engine heaters:
Oil
Use an oil with the correct viscosity for the
temperatures that the SOLAS-engine will be used in,
see table.
The correct oil viscosity is stated in chapter "Technical
data" in the D4/D6 Operator’s Manual.
Battery
To manage cold starts, the starter battery shall have a
capacity of:
12 V 2300 CCA
24 V 1150 CCA
Engine heater
To manage cold starts in temperatures below -15°C
(5°F), the engine must be equipped with an engine
heater of at least 2 kW.
Read the user instructions from the
supplier of the engine heater carefully before you use
your SOLAS-engine in a cold climate.
Viscosity Refers to synthetic or semi-synthetic oils
NOTICE! The temperature values refer to stable
ambient temperatures.

Maintenance
Service intervals are stated in the D4/D6 Operator’s
Manual. The service content can be found in the
Service Protocol available for download at www.
volvopenta.com.
For D4/D6-SOLAS, the additional points must be
followed. When both operating hours and calendar-
based service intervals are given, maintenance is to
be performed at the interval that occurs rst.
Before performing any work, read carefully through
the chapter ”Maintenance” in the Operator’s Manual
for the D4/D6. It contains instructions for correct and
safe working procedures.
After a dry testrun (without seawater):
The impeller in the seawater pump
is designed to rotate in water. At delivery, the inside of
the pump housing is lubricated to protect the impeller
during the rst dry start without seawater.
Always use water resistant grease as a lubricant with
dry testruns. Other types of lubricants damage the
impeller.
The impeller must always be greased after running in
water. If the engine has run with seawater - make sure
the impeller is greased before any dry start. If it runs
dry, without grease the impeller will be damaged.

Every 200 hour / 50 dry starts
• Check the tension and condition of the drive belt.
See instructions for check of drive belt in the D4/
D6 Service&Maintenance manual.
Tightening torque SOLAS-D4/D6 (B):
45 ± 5 Nm (33.2 ± 3.7 lbf ft).
The tightening torque di󰀨ers
from the value given the Service & Maintenance
manual.
• Check the condition of the hose connections on
the solenoid valve. Tighten the hose clamps.
• Check the condition of the seals on the starter
motor drainage.
• Check the condition of the capsizing relay,
solenoid valve and alternator. Also check their
wiring, connectors and terminations. The function
of the capsizing relay is checked by inverting it.
The engine should then stop automatically.
• Drain o󰀨 any condensation by undoing the seals
on the starter motor drainage (C) Reseal the
drainage again.
• Replace impeller. See instructions for how
to change impeller in the D4/D6 Service &
Maintenance manual.
Every 800 hour / at least once every 4th year:
• Replace drive belt. See the instructions for
replacement of drive belt in the D4/D6 Service &
Maintenance manual.
Tightening torque SOLAS-D4/D6 (B):
45 ± 5 Nm (33.2 ± 3.7 lbf ft)

After use in extreme conditions:
If the engine has been operated
partly submerged in water, a thorough inspection
and cleaning must follow as soon as possible. The
inspection applies even if the water level did not
exceed the crankshaft, as sea conditions may mean
that water washed over the engine. Water, especially
salt water, is particularly damaging to the engine
components.
• Check and clean all outer engine components.
Take special care of the electrical system.

Einführung
Der Motor D4/D6-SOLAS von Volvo Penta ist so
konstruiert, dass er die Anforderungen der Richtlinie
2014/90/EU einhält.
Damit die Anforderungen der Richtlinie erfüllt werden,
wurden folgende Änderungen und Ergänzungen des
Motors SOLAS-D4/D6 vorgenommen:
1. Änderung: Ablauf des Anlassers abgedichtet.
Funktion: Der Motor läuft selbst dann, wenn
Wasser bis zur Kurbelwellenmitte steht.
2. Änderung: Eine einzigartige Seewasserpumpe.
Funktion: Mehr Platz zwischen dem Gehäuse
der Seewasserpumpe und dem Impeller, kann
Trockenlauf über einen längeren Zeitraum
aushalten, ohne dass der Impeller beschädigt wird.
3. Änderung: Generator an eine höhere Position versetzt.
Funktion: Der Motor läuft selbst dann, wenn
Wasser bis zur Kurbelwellenmitte steht.
4. Änderung: Besonderer Impellersatz
Funktion: Einzigartiges Material für den Impeller,
kann Trockenlauf über einen längeren Zeitraum
aushalten, ohne dass der Impeller beschädigt wird
5. Ergänzung: Ein Kenter-Relais ist im Boot
eingebaut und an die elektrische Anlage des
Motors angeschlossen.
Funktion: Beim Kentern des Bootes schaltet der
Motor automatisch ab.
6. Ergänzung: Eine Ölfalle wurde zwischen dem
Abscheider der Kurbelgehäuseentlüftung und dem
Luftlter eingefügt.
Funktion: Die Ölfalle verhindert, das Motoröl
austritt, wenn das Boot kentert.
7. Ergänzung: Ein Ventil ist zwischen dem Motor und
dem Filter der Kurbelgehäuseentlüftung eingebaut.
Funktion: Das Ventil verhindert, das Motoröl
austritt, wenn das Boot kentert.

Beim Einsatz eines Stopp/Kipp-Schalters
Wenn der Motor wegen eines Kenterns des Bootes
automatisch gestoppt hat, kann er nach dem
Stabilisieren des Bootes in richtiger Position wieder
gestartet werden.
Nach einem automatischen Sicherheitsstopp ist die
Zündung noch eingeschaltet. Sie muss deshalb vor
einem Neustart ausgeschaltet werden.
Startvorgang gemäß D4/D6-Betriebsanleitung ausführen.
1. Zündung ausschalten.
2. Zündung wieder einschalten.
3. Den Motor starten.
Besondere Anforderungen bei Motorbe-
trieb in kalten Klimazonen
Damit der SOLAS-D4/D6 auch bei kalter Witterung
sicher startet, muss der Bootseigner sicherstellen,
dass folgende Anforderungen an Öl, Batterien und
Motorheizung erfüllt sind:
Öl
Öl mit einer für die Temperaturen geeigneten
Viskosität verwenden, in denen der SOLAS-Motor
eingesetzt wird, siehe Tabelle.
Die richtige Ölvikosität steht im Kapitel „Technische
Daten“ der D4/D6-Bedienungsanleitung.
Batterie
Damit sie für einen Kaltstart ausgelegt ist, muss die
Batterie eine Kapazität haben von:
12 V 2300 Kaltstartfähigkeit
24 V 1150 Kaltstartfähigkeit
Motorheizung
Damit ein Kaltstart bei Temperaturen unter -15 °C
möglich ist, muss der Motor mit einer Motorheizung
von mind. 2 kW ausgestattet sein.
Bedienungsanleitung des
Motorheizungs-Herstellers sorgfältig lesen, bevor der
SOLAS-Motor in kalten Klimazonen eingesetzt wird.
Viskosität bezieht sich auf synthetische oder
halbsynthetische Öle
HINWEIS! Die Temperaturwerte beziehen sich auf
stabile Umgebungstemperaturen.

Wartung
Die Wartungsabstände stehen in der D4/D6-
Betriebsanleitung. Der Inhalt der Wartungsarbeiten
sind im Serviceprotokoll enthalten, das unter www.
volvopenta.com heruntergeladen werden kann.
Bei D4/D6-SOLAS müssen die zusätzlichen Punkte
beachtet werden. Falls die Wartungsabstände
sowohl nach Betriebsstunden als auch nach
Kalenderzeiträumen angegeben sind, gilt der jeweils
früher eintretende Zeitpunkt.
Vor allen Arbeiten sorgfältig das Kapitel „Wartung“ in der
D4/D6-Betriebsanleitung lesen. Es enthält Anweisungen
für ordnungsgemäße und sichere Arbeitsabläufe.
Nach einem trockenen Testlauf (ohne Seewasser):
Der Impeller in der Seewasserpumpe ist für den
Betrieb im Wasser vorgesehen. Bei Lieferung ist die
Pumpe innen geschmiert, um das Laufrad beim ersten
trockenen Testlauf ohne Seewasser zu schützen.
Bei trockenen Testläufen stets wasserfestes Schmier-
fett als Schmiermittel verwenden. Andere Schmiermit-
tel beschädigen den Impeller.
Der Impeller muss nach dem Betrieb im Wasser
immer geschmiert werden. Nachdem der Motor in
Seewasser gelaufen ist, muss vor einem Trockenstart
sichergestellt werden, dass der Impeller geschmiert
ist. Wenn der Impeller ohne Schmierfett trocken läuft,
wird er bechädigt.

• Den Zustand der Dichtungen am Ablauf des
Anlassers prüfen.
• Den Zustand des Kenter-Relais, des
Magnetventils und des Generators prüfen.
Auch die Leitungen, die Steckverbindungen und
Klemmen prüfen. Die Funktion des Kenter-Relais
wird geprüft, indem es umgedreht wird. Der Motor
muss dann automatisch stoppen.
• Gegebenenfalls Kondenswasser ablassen, indem
die Dichtungen am Ablauf des Anlassers (C) geö󰀨net
werden. Danach den Ablauf erneut verschließen.
• Den Impeller auswechseln. Siehe Die Anleitung
zum Auswechseln des Impellers in der D4/D6-
Service- und Wartungsanleitung.
Alle 800 Stunden/mindestens einmal jährlich:
• Den Treibriemen auswechseln. Siehe die
Anleitung für das Auswechseln des Treibriemens
in der D4/D6-Service- und Wartungsanleitung.
Anziehdrehmoment SOLAS-D4/D6 (B):
45 ±5 Nm

Nach dem Einsatz unter besonders schwierigen
Bedingungen:
Wenn der Motor teilweise in Wasser
eingetaucht betrieben wurde, muss er unverzüglich
gereinigt und geprüft werden. Dies ist auch der
Fall, wenn kein Wasser die Kurbelwelle überspült
hat, was aber auf hoher See beim Überspülen des
Motors geschehen kann. Wasser und insbesondere
Salzwasser kann die Motorbauteile beschädigen.
• Alle äußeren Motorbauteile prüfen und reinigen.
Die Elektrik mit besonderer Vorsicht behandeln.

Introduction
Les moteurs Volvo Penta D4/D6-SOLAS sont
conçus de manière à être conformes aux exigences
applicables de la directive 2014/90/UE.
An de répondre aux exigences de la directive, les
modications et additions suivantes ont été apportées
au SOLAS-D4/D6 :
1.  Étanchéité de la vidange dudémarreur.
Fonction : Le moteur peut tourner même avec de
l’eau jusqu’à l’axe du vilebrequin.
2.  Une pompe à eau de mer unique.
Fonction : Augmentation de l’espace entre le
carter de la pompe à eau de mer et la turbine,
peut supporter de fonctionner à sec pendant une
longue période sans endommager la turbine.
3. Alternateur déplacé à un
emplacement plus élevé.
Fonction : Le moteur peut tourner même avec de
l’eau jusqu’àl’axe du vilebrequin.
4.  Kit turbine spécial
Fonction : Matériau unique de la turbine, pouvant
supporter de fonctionner à sec pendant une
longue période sans endommager la turbine.
5. Ajout : Un relais de retournement est positionné
dans le bateau et est connecté au système
électrique du moteur.
Fonction : Le moteur s’arrête automatiquement si
le bateau se retourne.
6. Ajout : Un capteur d’huile a été ajouté entre le
séparateur CCV et le ltre à air.
Fonction : Le capteur d’huile empêche tout risque
de fuite d’huile du moteur si le bateau se retourne.
7. Ajout : Une vanne est montée entre le moteur et
le ltre du reniard du carter moteur.
Fonction : La vanne empêche tout risque de fuite
d’huile du moteur si le bateau se retourne.

En cas d'arrêt de sécurité/déploiement com-
mutateur d'inclinaison
Si le moteur s'est arrêté automatiquement suite au
retournement du bateau, il peut être redémarré à
nouveau une fois que la position du bateau dans l'eau
s'est stabilisée.
Après un arrêt de sécurité automatique, le contact
est toujours mis et doit par conséquent être mis en
position d'arrêt avant d'essayer de redémarrer le
moteur.
Suivre la procédure de démarrage indiquée dans le
Guide de l'Utilisateur du D4/D6.
1. Couper le contact.
2. Remettre le contact.
3. Démarrer le moteur.
Exigences spéciales sur le fonctionne-
ment du moteur dans les climats froids
Pour garantir un démarrage en toute sécurité du
SOLAS-D4/D6 dans les climats froids, il est de la
responsabilité du propriétaire du bateau de s'assurer
que les exigences suivantes liées à l’huile, aux
batteries et aux réchau󰀨eurs du moteur sont remplies :
Huile
Utiliser une huile ayant la bonne viscosité pour les
températures par lesquelles le moteur SOLAS sera
utilisé, voir le tableau.
La viscosité adéquate de l’huile est indiquée dans le
chapitre « Caractéristiques techniques » du Guide de
l’Utilisateur D4/D6.
Batterie
Pour gérer les démarrages à froid, la batterie de
démarrage doit avoir une capacité de :
12 V 2 300 CCA
24 V 1150 CCA
󰀨
An de gérer les démarrages à froid par des
températures inférieures à -15 °C (5 °F), le moteur doit
être équipé d’un réchau󰀨eur de moteur d'au moins 2 kW.
Lire les instructions d’utilisation du
fournisseur du réchau󰀨eur du moteur avant d'utiliser
votre moteur SOLAS par un climat froid.
Viscosité Se rapporte aux huiles synthétiques ou
semi-synthétiques
REMARQUE : Les valeurs de température se réfèrent

Maintenance
Les intervalles d’entretien sont indiqués dans le Guide
de l'Utilisateur D4/D6. Le contenu de l'entretien est
disponible dans le Protocole d'entretien qui peut être
téléchargé sur de www.volvopenta.com.
Pour D4/D6-SOLAS, les points supplémentaires
suivants doivent être respectés. Lorsque la
maintenance et les intervalles de service basé sur
un programme sont fournis, la maintenance doit être
e󰀨ectuée à l'intervalle qui se produit en premier.
Avant d'e󰀨ectuer des travaux,
lire minutieusement le chapitre « exécution des
opérations d’entretien » dans le Guide de l'Utilisateur
pour le moteur D4/D6. Il contient des instructions sur
les procédures d'intervention sûres et correctes.
Après un test de fonctionnement à sec (sans eau
de mer) :
La roue à aubes dans la pompe à
eau de mer est conçue pour tourner dans l’eau. À la
livraison, l'intérieur du corps de la pompe est lubrié
pour protéger la roue à aubes lors du premier démar-
rage à sec sans eau de mer.
Utilisez toujours de la graisse hydrofuge avec comme lu-
briant lors des tests de fonctionnement à sec. D'autres
types de lubriants endommageraient la roue à aubes.
La roue à aubes doit toujours être lubriée après un
test immergé. Si le moteur a fonctionné avec l’eau de
mer, s’assurer que la roue à aubes est graissée avant
tout démarrage à sec. Un fonctionnement à sec, sans
graisse, endommagerait roue à aubes.

Toutes les 200 heures/50 démarrages à sec
• Contrôler la tension et l’état de la courroie
d’entraînement. Voir les instructions pour le
contrôle de la courroie d'entraînement dans le
manuel d’entretien et de maintenance D4/D6.
Couple de serrage SOLAS-D4/D6 (B) :
45 ± 5 Nm (33,2 ± 3,7 lbf pi).
Les couples de serrage di󰀨èrent
de la valeur donnée dans le manuel d’entretien et
de maintenance.
• Vérier l'état de tous les raccords de exible sur
l'électrovanne. Serrer les colliers de serrage.
• Vérier l'état des joints sur la purge du démarreur.
• Vérier l'état du relai de retournement, de
l'électrovanne et de l'alternateur. Contrôler
également leur câblage, les connecteurs et les
bornes. La fonction du relai de retournement
est vériée en l'inversant. Le moteur doit alors
s'arrêter automatiquement.
• Vidanger toute condensation en détachant les
joints sur la purge du démarreur (C) Remettre un
joint sur la purge.
• Remplacer l'hélice. Voir les instructions sur le
changement de la roue à aubes dans le manuel
d’entretien et de maintenance D4/D6.
Toutes les 800 heures/au moins tous les 4 ans :
• Remplacer la courroie d’entraînement. Voir les
instructions pour le remplacement de la courroie
d'entraînement dans le Manuel d’entretien et de
maintenance D4/D6.
Couple de serrage SOLAS-D4/D6 (B) :
45±5 Nm (33,2±3,7 lbf pi)

Après une utilisation dans des conditions ex-
trêmes :
Si le moteur a été utilisé
partiellement immergé dans l’eau, une inspection
et un nettoyage minutieux doivent suivre le plus
vite possible. Cette inspection s'applique même si
le niveau d'eau n'a pas dépassé le vilebrequin, car
l’état de la mer peut vouloir dire que l'eau a recouvert
le moteur. Présence d’eau, en particulier s'il s'agit
de l'eau salée, endommage particulièrement les
composants du moteur.
• Contrôler et nettoyer tous les composants
extérieurs du moteur. Apporter un soin particulier
au système électrique.
