Group 17 Preventive Maintenance, General
General
Preventive Maintenance, General
W1000183
This manual describes inspection and lubrication requirements during the preventive mainte-
nance services of VOLVO Trucks North America. The purpose for doing the preventive mainte-
nance is to ensure that the vehicle is safe and road worthy over its full lifetime.
The driver is taking part in the continuous preventive maintenance program by completing the re-
quired Daily Pre-trip Inspection. This is a purely visual inspection that is designed to detect any
obvious problems that would make the vehicle unsafe to take on the road. Added to the Pre-trip
Inspection is the Preventive Maintenance Program that is typically carried out by trained
personnel.
Preventive Maintenance is a planned vehicle maintenance program that provides an orderly ser-
ies of servicing and inspection procedures. A well applied maintenance program realizes the in-
vestment made in the vehicle. The difference between a poorly maintained vehicle and a well
maintained vehicle will not show up until later mileage. Good maintenance is necessary to as-
sure the designed life expectancy of the vehicle and its individual components.
1

Group 17 Maintenance Coverage
Maintenance Coverage
There is no firm maintenance program that will apply to all operations. A basic maintenance program is not difficult to set up; to
make the program the most effective takes time and effort, and is based around the needs and experiences of each individual
operation. The program in this service manual covers all types of VOLVO vehicles with medium to high mileage and sometimes
high loads.
Use this established maintenance program as a base to tailor an individual maintenance program for customers that have re-
quirements that are outside of the scope of this program.
To establish an individual program, look at information sources that are usually available, such as:
•Driver's repair or complaint reports.
•Unusual parts usage.
•Repetitive failures or problems found in inspection.
•Unscheduled maintenance or repairs.
•Road failures.
Program Structure
This maintenance program has been based on the progress in vehicle technology and increases in oil quality to simplify the
maintenance.
For simplified scheduling, the program has tied maintenance to logical time or mileage limits that make it easy to anticipate
needed servicing.
See the engine types for recommended oil change intervals. The intervals do not cover all applications. In on/off highway driv-
ing, severe off-highway, continuous stop-and-go city driving and extremely high mileages, the oil change interval needs to be
customized for the best protection and economy. Change all oil filters at each oil change.
Synthetic oils do not allow further extension of oil drain intervals. It is the contamination rate, i.e., soot, and the depletion of addi-
tives, rather than base oil quality that determines the useful engine oil life and therefore the oil change intervals.
Note: North American engines meeting the emissions requirements are designed with exhaust aftertreatment systems requiring
a new engine oil quality. This has lead VOLVO to require an oil that meets VDS-4 and/or EO-O Premium Plus quality standards
for VOLVO engines. VDS-4 and EO-O Premium Plus are both based on the newly developed API CJ-4 engine oil specification,
but have additional performance requirements essential to adequately protect the VOLVO engines at the drain intervals speci-
fied. All oils listed in this bulletin also meet API CJ-4. Earlier engines also work better with the above mentioned oils, but are not
required.
For further information concerning maintenance scheduling, see service information in Function Group 1, Oil and Filters, VOLVO
Components and any appropriate vendor literature.
3

Group 17 Advantages
Advantages
A well-planned preventive maintenance program offers the following advantages:
•The lowest attainable maintenance cost.
•Maximum vehicle uptime.
•Better fuel economy.
•Reduced road failures; greater dependability.
•Increased customer confidence, better public relations.
•Less possibility of accidents due to defective equipment.
•Fewer driver complaints.
Regardless of the planning and the details of the maintenance program, the success of the program hinges on the caliber of
workmanship in performing the actual inspection. A major cause of failure is a “pencil inspection”; that is, the mechanic checks
off each operation as being OK without making the actual inspection. A “pencil inspection” defeats the purpose of the inspection,
which is to detect an impending failure.
Maintenance Form
A service manual is issued detailing the current inspection forms. Forms are created for different users but all with the same
references to this document. When the inspection point is carried out, check the box if the item is OK. If further work, such as ad-
justment, repair, etc., needs to be performed, check that box and go on with the next inspection point. Items noted as being faulty
or in need of adjustment need to be shown to the customer and scheduled for repair.
There are many time — and/or mileage-based — service items that are not listed on the form, they include:
•VOLVO Engine Valve Adjustment
•Engine Coolant
•Fan Hub
•Clutch Hydraulic Fluid (US Only)
•Air Dryers
•Eaton Fuller and Meritor Transmissions
•VOLVO Transmissions
Maintenance Records
It is important to use the inspection form together with other reports to come up with the best maintenance program for a specific
application. Use driver's reports, complaints, parts usage, repetitive failures, previous repair orders, road failures, etc. to build a
maintenance picture of the customer operation.
Records should be collected over the lifetime of the vehicle to form a permanent vehicle record file. The vehicle file should be
used to customize the operational maintenance needs.
The “Driver Inspection Form” is also required by Federal law. The use of this inspection report makes the driver a part of the
maintenance program and places direct responsibility on the driver to report problems that may come up during operation. When
properly used, there should be no excuse for a defective vehicle being in service.
Note: The included Annual Service checklist is an uncon-
trolled copy. The document may be updated without notice.

Group 17 Maintenance Preparation
Maintenance Preparation
Preventive Maintenance Inspection Bay
Location
Preventive maintenance is logically carried out at the same time as lubrication of the vehicle. It is then natural to use a bay with a
grease pit to be assigned and equipped for preventive maintenance. If a pit is not available, a regular workshop bay can be used,
with jacks added to the necessary equipment.
The bay needs to be well lit so inspection can be done without having to use a flashlight (unless inspecting in the frame).
Equipment
Inspection bay equipment should be specifically assigned to that bay and not be shared with the rest of the shop. The floor
equipment should have floor space for storage in between using them and tools should be hung on boards or stored in a cabinet
for easy overview and access.
Install mirrors in four corners of the bay so one person can do a lighting function check without having to leave the cab or rely on
a spotter. Mirrors do not need to be larger than truck door mirrors. Any type of equipment that allows inspection by one person in-
stead of having to use a helper, makes inspection easier and faster.
Reception
When the customer drops off the vehicle, the service receptionist starts the paperwork and prepares the forms needed for the
preventive maintenance. Ask the customer about problems that have been noticed while driving the vehicle. Ask questions that
will make the job easier for the technician to find problem sources:
— Irregular tire wear?
— Unusual noise?
— Unusual vibration?
— Leaks?
— Other operation problems?
As the vehicle is approached, check for signs of leakage, general appearance, body damage, etc. Walk around the vehicle. Note
on the preventive maintenance inspection form if any leaks or problems are found.
5

Group 17 Inspection
Inspection
Inspection is carried out depending on the application and operation of the vehicle. This inspection is designed to open up com-
ponents for inspection or using test equipment to record performance.
All inspection points are to be carried out as verification of function or condition. Any defects are noted on the inspection form for
later correction, if so ordered by the vehicle owner.
Note: The included preventive maintenance service checklist is an original copy. The document can be updated without notice.
Note: The standard repair time for performing the Preventive Maintenance Inspection includes the engine oil and filter
change, and chassis lubrication. Additional time for other repairs and/or adjustments are not included in the Preventive
Maintenance Inspection.
Other Inspection
There are additional service points that are carried out at specific mileage or time intervals. These are not part of the preventive
maintenance time. They should be scheduled as an adjustment or repair job carried out at the same time as their respective pre-
ventive maintenance, and are listed in this document as reminders only.

Group 17 Safety Advice
Safety Advice
You must read and understand the precautions and guidelines in service information before performing any of these procedures.
Ask your supervisor for training, If you are not properly trained and certified in any of these procedures.
DANGER
Never operate a diesel engine in an area where hydrocarbon
vapors (gasoline for example) are present or are suspected
to be present. Hydrocarbon vapors can enter the air intake
and make the engine overspeed, causing severe damage
and/or explosion or fire. Serious personal injury or death can
occur.
DANGER
Before working on a vehicle, set the parking brakes, place
the transmission in neutral, and block the wheels. Failure to
do so can result in unexpected vehicle movement and can
cause serious personal injury or death.
DANGER
When entering and exiting the cab, use caution. Always
have a firm hand hold and/or stable foot position before
transferring weight to that position. Do not carry anything
when entering or exiting. Make sure the soles of your shoes
and the cab steps are free from dirt, grease, oil or moisture
before using the steps. Failure to do so can result in a fall,
and serious personal injury or death may occur.
DANGER
If using a jack and/or jack stands, choose proper fault-free
equipment. Failure to do so can result in equipment failures
and personal injury or death may occur.
DANGER
When operating a vehicle on streets and highways during
data collecting procedure, it is mandatory to have a second
person drive while a technician collects the data. Inattention
to driving may cause an accident and injury or death.
WARNING
Clean up fuel spills immediately. Fuel leaked or spilled onto
hot surfaces or electrical components can cause a fire with
potential for serious personal injury.
WARNING
Always wear appropriate eye protection to prevent the risk of
eye injury due to contact with debris or fluids.
WARNING
Serious burns can result from contact with hot axle, engine,
or transmission oil. Take precautions when draining the oil.
Wear gloves and let the engine cool down before draining.
WARNING
HOT ENGINE! Keep yourself and your test equipment clear
of all moving or hot engine parts. A hot engine can cause
serious burns or can permanently damage test equipment.
WARNING
Never remove the cap on the expansion tank while the en-
gine is still hot. Wait until the engine coolant temperature
(ECT) is below 50° C (120° F). Scalding steam and fluid
under pressure may escape and cause serious personal
injuries.
Note: During the preventive maintenance inspection, check the
condition of warning labels on the vehicle. If a label is damaged
or defaced to the point where the message cannot be read,
note on the inspection form to have it replaced.
Note: Some vehicles are equipped with TEMP-A-START
(TAS), which can be readily identified by a dash mounted switch
with a TAS indicator. Vehicles equipped with this option will per-
form an engine shutdown, if the engine is left idling for 10 mi-
nutes, or a dash shutdown, if the key switch is left in the ignition
position for 10 minutes with the engine idling.

Lubrication General
Lubrication Chart
Make sure that grease fittings are cleaned off before filling
grease. Dirt on the fitting that is not cleaned off is pushed into
the part with the new grease. Always fill grease to the point
where old grease and contaminants are forced out from the part
and only new grease comes out. If grease can not be filled so
old grease is forced out or if new grease exits without pushing
old grease out, note this on the form for repair. If a fitting does
not accept lubrication due to damage or internal stoppage, re-
place with a new fitting.
Do not heat part for better grease application where rubber or
plastic parts are involved.
Remove excess grease from fittings, spring shackles and other
surfaces.

Group 17 Lubrication Chart Notes
Lubrication Chart Notes
1. Spring hanger: Use a lithium based grease with specification API NLGI Number 2. When lubricating the left and right sides
of the front springs, lift the axle off of the floor, suspend the frame with axle stands and lower the axle. The spring bushings are
now in the position where grease can be added to the contact surfaces.
Note: The rock guard will have to be removed (if equipped).
Note: Always grease a VOLVO front axle with the wheels on the ground.
Note: To grease non-VOLVO axles, they are typically greased with the wheels on the ground. Consult with the axle manufacturer
for the latest recommendation.
2. Slack adjuster: Do not grease till 1st scheduled maintenance interval.
Note: See manufacturers specifications for specific grease. Adjust according to the specific slack adjuster manufacturing
specifications.
Brake cam Use a lithium based grease with EP additives to specification API NLGI Number 2.
Note: If the brake cam seal does not purge, make sure the inner seal does not purge into the brake drum and onto the brake
linings.
3. Steering gear: Use a lithium based grease with specification API NLGI Number 2. Only use a hand operated grease gun. The
high pressure from an air operated grease gun will damage the seal.
4. Drag link and steering shaft: Use a lithium based grease with specification API NLGI Number 2.
5. Kingpin, upper and lower: Use a lithium based grease with specification API NLGI Number 2.
Note: Always grease a VOLVO front axle with the wheels on the ground.
Note: To grease non-VOLVO axles, they are typically greased with the wheels on the ground. Consult with the axle manufacturer
for the latest recommendation.
6. Tie-rod: Use a lithium based grease with specification API NLGI Number 2.
Note: VOLVO axles may use a greased-for-life tie-rod. No provisions for adding grease are available.
7. Leaf Springs: Front and rear leaf spring eye pins, should be pressure lubricated with chassis grease. Vehicles equipped with
multi leaf springs should also have, the leaves lubricated with a spray gun or brush using a rust inhibiting oil.
CAUTION
Keep grease and oil, off of rubber bushings. Failure to do so will result in component damage.
Note: If the vehicle is operated in sandy or dusty environments, the spring ends should be left dry. Dirt and grease can mix, re-
sulting in a "sandpaper" action that may cause pre-mature wear to the spring ends.
8. Brake fluid and clutch reservoir: (if equipped) Check the fluid level in the reservoir. Add brake fluid if necessary. Use only
DOT 4 brake fluid in the clutch release system. Mixing DOT 4 brake fluid with petroleum based oil will cause seal damage which
will cause leakage.
9. Clutch bearing linkage: Use a lithium based grease with EP additives to specification API NLGI Number 2.
Note: Inspection cover removal is necessary. Lubricate according to Eaton's lubrication document and reinstall the inspection
cover. See http://www.roadranger.com for the latest heavy-duty clutch service information.
10. U-Joints: Propeller shafts come fully grease and ready for vehicle operation. No grease should be added at assembly plant.
Note: Propeller shaft that have plastic caps over the grease fittings have maintenance free U-joints and caps should not be
removed.
3

Group 17 Lubrication Chart Notes
11. PTO/Hydraulic reservoir.
12. Rear suspension (48k-70k suspension): When lubricating the spring pin bushing use a lithium based grease with specifi-
cation API NLGI Number 2.
Note: Newer versions may have rubber bushing that do not need lubrication.
13. Coolant level: Add coolant if necessary. Only use pre-mixed clean water and coolant in a 50/50 mix.
Add only the same type coolant, that is: extended life or standard.
14. Steering assist cylinder: Use a lithium based grease with EP additives to specification API NLGI Number 2 to grease both
ball joints.
15. Front oil lubricated wheel bearings (if applicable): Oill filled hubs change oil at 160,000 km (1000,000 mi) or 12 months or
when hub is removed for repairs or other routine maintenance.
16. Power steering fluid: Check the fluid in the reservoir with the dipstick. Add oil if necessary. Use ATF Dexron® III or better.
Change fluid every 240,000 km (150,000 miles). Change filter every year.
Use a lithium based grease with specification API NLGI Number 2.
17. Engine oil and filter: For oil change schedule see service information in Function Group 1, Oil and Filters, VOLVO
Components.
18. Windshield washer fluid level:
19. Automatic and manual transmission:
Automatic transmission: Use Dexron® III or better automatic transmission fluid. See the manufacturer's operator manual for
intervals and quantity.
Manual transmission: Use a mineral or synthetic oil. Check oil level periodically. Level should be to the bottom of the inspection
hole.
I-Shift transmission: With the vehicle level, the oil should be between the maximum and minimum levels on the sight glass. On-
ly use VOLVO approved oils. Refer to Function Group 1 for the approved oils list.
20. Auxiliary axle(s): If equipped with auxiliary lift axles use a lithium based grease with specification API NLGI Number 2. Also,
lubricate the brake, cams, slack adjuster and tie-rod ends.
21. Rear axle: Check the oil level in the differential by removing the fill/level plug in the housing. The oil should be level with the
bottom of the fill/level plug hole. Add oil if necessary.
CAUTION
Most rear differentials have a large screw and nut protruding from the housing. The screw and nut hold the thrust plate shoe
against the ring gear and are not to be confused with the fill/level plug.
Note: Refer to service information in Function Group 1, Oil and Filters, VOLVO Components for Oil Types.
22. Fifth wheel: The fifth wheel and slider assemblies should always be re-lubricated after steam cleaning or at least every oil
change.
Note: A heavy coating of grease is recommended on the fifth wheel plate by using the grease gun or a putty knife by direct appli-
cation to the top of the plate.
Due to different manufactures of 5th wheels and models, some 5th wheels may not have grease fittings. Use a lithium based
grease with specification API NLGI Number 2 on tracks and moving components.
