6.1 WABCO Leakage Finder 2.0
6.1.1 Functional description
The WABCO Leakage Finder 2.0 is used to detect ultrasonic signals.
Using WABCO Leakage Finder 2.0, faulty components can be located in systems and their risk
potential for the process evaluated. Ultrasonic signals, e.g. caused by friction on damaged parts, form
the basis. Ultrasound can occur in a variety of processes, including:
on leaks in compressed air, steam and vacuum systems
when operating steam traps
on leaking valves, gate valves, shutoff valves or cocks in pipe systems
during the operation of roller bearings
in the case of cavitation caused by pumps and compressors
The ultrasonic signals generated during the above processes are recorded with the WABCO Leakage
Finder 2.0, converted into audible sound and output in their intensity via headphones or a loudspeaker.
At the same time, the level of the ultrasound is shown graphically on a display.
The sound pressure is given in dB (relative value). This is calculated from the ratio of the sound
pressure to the reference value of the microphone voltage of 1 μV.
The following applies: 1 μV ≙ 0 dBμV
If the measured value is less than 1 μV, negative dB values may also occur. Values below 0 dB are at
the detection limit of the instrument and are unsuitable for reliable evaluations.

7.1 Leak search
With the WABCO Leakage Finder 2.0, leaks and untightness on compressed air components can be
located quickly and easily.
When a gas escapes from a leakage, the resulting turbulences - dependent on the pressure difference
and the size of the leakage - generate ultrasound. These ultrasonic signals are initially not perceptible
to the human ear. The WABCO Leakage Finder 2.0 converts the signals into visually and acoustically
perceptible information. The detectable tightness class is 10-2 mbar*l/s
7.1.1 Carrying out a leak search
Required components:
WABCO Leakage Finder 2.0
Airborne sound probe or exible airborne sound probe
Headphones with connecting cable or loudspeaker
Carrying out a leak search
To facilitate the leak search, carry out the following shielding procedures in advance:
– Close any open doors.
– Use your body or other aids to shield the search area from foreign sound sources.

19
Tests

– Press to turn on the WABCO Leakage Finder 2.0.
NOTICE
Damage to the probe connector
The probe connector may be damaged if it is not installed correctly in WABCO Leakage Finder 2.0.
–Install the desired probe at the specied position (slot for the probes has a notch).
ÖThe connector engages noticeably in the slot.
ÖThe probe is now ready for operation.
– Connect the airborne sound probe to the WABCO Leakage Finder 2.0.
The exible airborne sound probe is used in areas that are difcult to access. With the 30 cm long
special probe, parts of the system that are difcult to reach can be tested much more easily.
Using the headphones:
– Connect the connecting cable to the headphones and the WABCO Leakage Finder 2.0.
When connecting the headphones, make sure that both connectors (on the WABCO Leakage Finder
2.0 and on the headphones) are fully plugged into the jack socket.
– Put on the headphones.
i
i
Alternatively, the loudspeaker can be used.
The loudspeaker must be charged via a separate USB cable before it is put into operation.
A red LED lights up during charging. This goes out when the charging process is nished.
Please also refer to the supplied operating instructions.
– Plug the speaker's jack into the jack socket of the WABCO Leakage Finder 2.0.
– Activate the speaker by pressing the button on the back until the blue light is activated.
To detect leaks, swivel the probe right, left, up or down.
– Follow the acoustic and visual signals to determine the leakage.
ÖAn increasingly louder sound and an increasing level on the display indicate an ultrasonic source
and thus also a leakage.
– Adjust the volume using the arrow buttons , if necessary, to improve the listening
experience.
i
i
Ultrasound reects on surrounding walls and objects. Therefore, make sure that you have
located the leakage and not an opposite reection.
NOTICE
Damage to the probe connector
The probe connector may be damaged if turned while disconnecting it from the WABCO Leakage
Finder 2.0.
–Press the button to release the connector.
–Pull the probe out of the slot straight and carefully.
