Install & Uninstall
Setup W40PC
The powerful W40PC hardware utilizes two Digital Signal Processors (DSP). Three signal
inputs are available: AF, HF and DIS (Discriminator). With a stable digital synthesizer (DDS)
and a mixer all input signals are translated to base band. The DSP’s demodulate the incoming
signal and automatically synchronize to a valid bit stream. After decoding by a WINDOWS-
DLL, the data is displayed on the user interface.
W40PC Hardware Installation
W40PC I/O Address Settings PC
Note:
The W40PC hardware only requires an address range in the I/O address space of the PC. No
DMA (Direct Memory Access) or IRQ (Interrupt) channels are required.
As one PC at the maximum accommodates one W40PC card, automatic installation (Plug-and-
Play, PnP) is presently not available. PnP will only work with systems equipped with a PCI
bus, and in case of ISA bus systems PnP may cause conflicts. An ISA-bus is available in all
PCs and hence is preferred.
The factory default W40PC address is set to 310 hexadecimal. Already allocated addresses are
known to WINDOWS. To find out the availability of an address is very easy. Use the
following commands:
Procedure for WINDOWS 95/98/ME:
•Right click on the "My Computer" icon on the desktop.
•Select the "Properties" Menu Item to open the "System
Properties" dialog.
•Select the "Device Manager" tab.
•In the displayed icon list, please double-click on first entry
"Computer" and select the "Input/output (I/O)" radio button.

4 •Install & Uninstall WAVECOM Decoders v6.15 W40PC, W41PC, W51PC
The allocated I/O addresses are displayed in a list.
In this example, the I/O address 0310 is free for use with the W40PC
Procedure for WINDOWS NT 4.0:
•Press "Start" button.
•Select "Programs" menu item.
•Select "Administrative Tools (Common)" menu item.
•Select "WINDOWS NT Diagnostics" menu item to start the NT
Diagnostics application.
•Select the "Resources" tab to display the assigned computer
resources.
•Select the "I/O Port" button to display the allocated I/O resources.
Note:
If the W40PC application is running, the I/O space assigned to the W40PC would also be
displayed in the list.

WAVECOM Decoders v6.15 W40PC, W41PC, W51PC Install & Uninstall •5
The default I/O address of 0310 is not occupied, and is free to use for the W40PC installation.
Procedure for WINDOWS 2000:
•Right click on the "My Computer" icon on the desktop.
•Select the "Properties" Menu Item to open the "System
Properties" dialog.
•Select "Hardware" and then "Device Manager".
•In the "View" menu, click on "Resources by type".
•Open "Input/output (IO)".
The allocated I/O addresses are displayed in a list.

6 •Install & Uninstall WAVECOM Decoders v6.15 W40PC, W41PC, W51PC
W40PC I/O Address Selection Card
The selection of the W40PC I/O address is controlled by two jumpers on the card, JP1 and JP2.
The factory default setting is 0310 hexadecimal with JP1 installed. Next to the jumpers a table
with valid address values is printed.

W40PC Card Installation
Before unpacking the W40PC card or installing it in your PC be sure you are grounded to
avoid damaging static-sensitive components on the card or in the computer. You can reduce
static electricity on your person by touching the metal chassis of your computer.
Power off your computer and unplug it from its power source and disconnect all peripherals.
Then carefully remove the cover of the computer, and locate a free 16 bit ISA slot. Carefully
insert the card into the connector and check that it is fully inserted. Replace the computer
cover, and power on the machine. It should boot normally.
W40PC PCI, EISA and ISA Adapters
W40PC Connecting to a W40PC Card
The W40PC card has three BNC signal inputs available:
Input Frequency Range Input Voltage Range
AF-IN 600 Hz - 16.0 kHz 5 mVrms - 2,5 Vrms
HF-IN 14 kHz - 1.5 MHz 1 mVrms - 0,5 Vrms
DIS-IN 0 Hz - 20.0 kHz 70 mVrms - 7,0 Vrms
One or more of these inputs must be connected to the signal source(s) by cinch / coaxial cable
or a similar shielded cable. As an example a HF receiver may be connected to the AF IN con-
nector and a VHF-UHF scanner to the HF IN connector.
To avoid distortion of the input signal, the input voltage ranges should be observed.
Below is an example of how to connect a W40PC card:

8 •Install & Uninstall WAVECOM Decoders v6.15 W40PC, W41PC, W51PC
W40PC PC Power Supply Ratings
A W40PC card consumes approx.
•60 mA from the +12V rail,
•60 mA from the –12V rail and
•600 mA from the +5V rail.
A typical PC power supply may as an example be rated at 150W, +5V/18.0A, +12V/3.0 A and
-12V/0.5 A.
W40PC Software Installation
The W40PC and other software is contained on a CD-ROM. The installation is very easy and
complies with standard WINDOWS installation procedures.
Place the CD in the CD-ROM drive. Usually the installation program should start automati-
cally.
Otherwise it can be started with the "WINDOWS Explorer" by double-clicking "Installa-
tion.exe". Now the welcome dialog of the installation program is shown:

WAVECOM Decoders v6.15 W40PC, W41PC, W51PC Install & Uninstall •9
If the operating system of the PC is WINDOWS 95, DCOM-95 must be installed
before the decoder software. With WINDOWS 98/ME/NT/2000/XP as operating

processor. Three signal inputs are available: AF, HF and IF (10.7 MHz or 21.4 MHz for
W41PC-MKII). An extremely stable digital synthesizer (DDS) translates all input signals to

W41PC Hardware Installation
W41PC I/O Address Settings PC
Note:
W41PC hardware only requires an address range in the I/O address space of the PC. No DMA
(Direct Memory Access) or IRQ (Interrupt) channels are required.
As one PC at the maximum accommodates eight W41PC cards, automatic installation (Plug-
and-Play, PnP) is presently not available. PnP will only work with systems equipped with a
PCI bus, and in case of ISA bus systems PnP may cause conflicts.
The factory default W41PC address is set to 310 hexadecimal. Already allocated addresses are
known to WINDOWS. To find out the availability of an address is very easy. Use the
following commands:
WINDOWS 95/98/Me WINDOWS NT WINDOWS 2000/XP
1. Start 1. Start 1. Start
2. Settings 2. Programs 2. Programs
3. Control Panel 3. Administrative Tools 3. Accessories
4. System 4. WINDOWS NT Diagnostics 4. System Tools
5. Device Manager 5. Resources 5. System Information
6. Computer 6. I/O Port 6. Hardware Resources
7. Input/Output (I/O) 7. I/O
If in the example shown below, the addresses 310 - 317 hexadecimal are not occupied, and is
free to use for the W41PC installation. If occupied, then another address must be selected (See
I/O Address Selection Card).
