LET'S SEW
Perforating Plain Paper
Your new, wonderful machine was delivered ready for ZIGZAG stitching. Certain kinds
of ST AIGHT stitching can also be done with the same NEEDLE PLATE and
P ESSE FOOT which were on the machine when you received it. A NEEDLE was
also properly installed, along with a partially filled BOBBIN underneath.
Without threading the needle, “sew” on a piece of PLAIN PAPE for a few minutes
while you become well acquainted with the few easy-to-use CONT OLS pictured and
briefly explained on pages 2 and 3; also 4 and 5. Later on, you are urged to study all
the operating details indexed on page 1 (which you should skip for the time being).
Time-saving, wonder-working sewing aids such as rufflers, binders, zipper sewing foot
and many other are available at modest prices and sold by the dealer from whom you
purchased your new machine.

To Sew Fancy Stitch Patterns UTOM TIC LLY Use the Cams —
Look over your large assortment of molded plastic cams. Their
color or colors do not affect function. A basic design such as
diamond, half-moon, triangle (as examples), is embossed on the
top, flat side of each. The cam used will automatically guide the
needle to repeatedly reproduce its pattern.
To Place a Replaceable Cam In Machine
Do two things before selecting a cam. (1) Look directly below the needle. Be sure the
presser foot and the needle plate are those pictured at the TOP LEFT of the next page.
(2) turn controls (BOTTOM IGHT of next page) until
the hanging lever can be swung from 0 to 5 on the dial.
Now lift open the small cam chamber cover on top of
the machine. While holding the ZZ Width Lever (next
page) at extreme left, (5) drop the selected cam onto
spindle C. While still holding the ZZ Width Lever,
revolve cam, pressing down lightly until the hole at its
bottom surface (E) slides onto pin (D). Close the cam
chamber lid. un the machine slowly while you adjust
the Stitch Length Dial setting between ½ and 1½.
Changing Path of Needle Multiplies Variety of Designs —
Lever NP can be set at Left, Center or ight. Each
different position alters the basic stitching line and
therefore the appearance of most all
of the zigzag stitch designs. Set
Lever NP at LEFT for straight
stitching. Pull Lever NP toward you
and it clicks when sliding into the three position notches. Pushed
in, Lever NP avoids the notches, moving freely for hand-
controlled creative embroidery (explained on page 5; without a
cam in machine).

BE SURE – For Zigzag Stitching
— Use This Needle Plate and Presser Foot
These two parts are slotted crosswise to allow for
needle swinging sideways while moving up and
down. Slots are about ¼ inch wide.
Later On — For Straight Stitching some Fabric —
The presser foot and needle plate with the small round hole
instead of a wide slot — best for the finest ST AIGHT stitching in sheer, fine or very
soft materials. For changing this standard equipment, see page 15.
— Setting Stitch Length — For Zigzag or Straight Sewing
Turn this speedometer-type dial CLOCKWISE to lengthen
stitch — COUNTE -CLOCK-WISE to shorten — for more
stitches per inch. efer to the chart just below and find your
favorite settings. Make a note of the numbers for quick and
easy duplication any time. emember that the material moves
along or “feeds” under the presser foot in the down position.
Whenever it does not, the stitch must be lengthened slightly.

Setting Width of Hand-Controlled Zigzag Stitching —
For Straight Stitching and Cam Controlled Zigzag, Keep Lever at 0
Adjust by turning the horizontal finger-rollers
to a number on dial — or in-between. To
make the sides of buttonholes for example,
you may set the left side number at 14; the
right side at 2.

To Sew Backward — Zigzag or Straight Stitching —
everse stitch push-button marked “ ” is in the base
of the machine directly below the Stitch Length Dial.
To sew backward, push the button down and the
feeding teeth will move the material in reverse to
normal sewing direction as long as the push-button
is held down. It’s foolproof. When the comfortably
placed “ ” button is released, the material sews
forward again.
To Drop Feeding Teeth for Darning or Monogramming
The Control Knob is just to the left of the everse Feed
button. To drop the feed teeth entirely below the needle
plate surface, turn the knob clockwise to the extreme left
position marked DN (down). For most normal sewing
jobs, the knob will be in the extreme right position
marked HI (high). Occasionally, the middle position (LO,
low) will be ideal for very delicate, filmy fabrics —
providing enough grip to feed the material without tearing or scraping it.
— djusting Pressure on Feed Teeth
For normal sewing, Bar (B) should be pushed down — its top
about even with the automatic locking ring (A). Single-finger
pressure on the edge of the ring will
release the bar causing it to pop all the
way up. That is the position for most
darning and monogram work with the
Feed Teeth in the DN position. When
sewing on delicate materials with the
Feed Teeth in the LO position, the presser bar should be pressed
down about half way.
Good Sewing Habit — The Take-Up Lever —
As each sewing operation is finished — before starting the
machine — while threading it — but ALWAYS when machine is not
running, be sure the Take-Up lever is at the top end of the slot.
Every time you stop the machine, turn the wheel by hand to
position the lever at the highest point. The only exception is to oil.

You Move Some Levers for Plain Zigzag — Satin Stitch — Creative Embroidery
There is no limit to the variety of stitch patterns you can sew
WITHOUT ANY CAM in the machine. Get well acquainted with the
use and effect of the four controls pictured below. Practice moving the
ZigZag Width Lever from side to side while running the machine. Do
likewise with the Needle Path Selector after pushing it in toward the
machine.
Plain Zigzagging ( ) Set the Stitch LENGTH Dial at 4 — after a few stitches, vary the
length as desired. Set the Zigzag WIDTH so the dial’s white area extends from
1 to 5. Now sew, holding the Zigzag Width lever the LEFT side.
For Satin Stitching (B) Set the Stitch LENGTH Dial at marked ////// (about halfway
between 0 and 1). Set the Zigzag Dial’s white area for the width of the stitch
desired. Now sew, holding the zigzag lever to the LEFT. For variations, move
the lever right, left, and right while sewing.
Make Flower Petals (C) Turn the drop feed knob to DN. Set the ZZ Width Dial’s white
area to extend from 1 to 4. Sew three or four stitches holding the Zigzag lever to
the LEFT. Stop the machine with the needle down in the cloth at the center of
the petal design. Pivoting on the needle, turn the fabric to the next petal and
repeat the steps to complete. Turn the right side roller on the ZZ Width Dial so
that the lever goes right to 0. Put three or four stitches in the center of the
design to lock the threads.
Serpentine Stitching (D) Set the ZZ Width Dial’s white area to extend from 2 to 5.
Press the Needle Path Selector lever in toward the machine — then as you run
the machine, move that lever alternately from left to right continuing the motion
back and forth in rhythm.

Selection of Needle
A high proportion of home sewing is done with a No. 1 size needle. For best results on
all fabrics from sheer chiffon to canvas, see the chart on page 6.
— Putting Needle in Machine
Turn the machine wheel until the needle bar (A) is at
the top position. Loosen the needle clamp (B) with a
screw driver. When the old needle drops out, the
new one can be inserted. Find the one flat side on
the needle SHANK and hold that FLAT SIDE TO the
IGHT as you push the
needle upward into the
clamp (C) as far as
possible. While
holding the
needle up there,
tighten the screw
(B) with the
screw driver.
Threading Machine (Top Thread) and Needle
Place a thread spool on the spool pin closest to the
needle (left). Lead thread through the back, then the
front thread guides (A); then down BETWEEN the
tension discs (B) from IGHT to LEFT, and around
to IGHT again until the thread enters the check
spring arm notch (C). Then pull immediately
upward, and the thread will enter the rectangular
opening in the bar (D). Continue pulling the thread
upward and into the take-up lever eye (E) from
IGHT to LEFT. Now down into the bar (D)
rectangular opening again; continuing down into the
needle bar thread guide (F), the spring guide on
needle clamp (G), and then into the needle eye
from LEFT to IGHT; pulling three to four inches of
thread through eye of needle.
Count 10 steps from the thread spool to the needle:
A1, A2, B, C, D, E, D, F, G, Needle eye.

Removing Bobbin Case From Machine—
Lift the hinged plate at the left
end of the machine bedplate.
Look down and slightly to the
right: You will see the
assembly pictured (right). With
the fingernail of your left hand,
first, finger under rear edge of
the latch (D), pull straight out
and use the raised latch as a finger grip to remove the
bobbin case containing the bobbin.
To Replace Bobbin Case in Machine
everse the above procedure. When sliding the case onto the shuttle center stud (C),
be sure that the threaded “finger” (E) is directly upright so it will enter the shuttle race
notch (A) as you push the case (B) into sewing position, finally releasing the latch (D)
to hold it in place.
— Winding (Refilling) Bobbin
Turn the balance wheel clutch counter-clockwise so that the
wheel turns freely without tuning the entire machine. From a
spool on the machine,
lead thread through the
rear and front guides atop
the machine, then
diagonally right and down
between the tension discs
(T) as shown (right).
Holding the empty bobbin
in the other hand, lead
the thread through a hole
in the side of the bobbin’s edge. Slide the bobbin
onto the spindle (S), fitting the notch in the hub of
the bobbin over the small pin on the spindle. Push
the rubber pulley (P) against the machine wheel and
run the machine slowly, holding the thread-end
loosely until winding action pulls it from your fingers.
The winder shuts off automatically when the bobbin
is filled. emove the bobbin from the spindle and
break off (or cut) the thread-end you held at the
start. Turn the wheel clutch clockwise firmly to re-engage the sewing mechanism.
