3.4: SET UP OF FORK
Tools Required: Small Ruler
The front fork will be pre- et with the tandard et-
ting when you buy your Whyte. Before riding, you
will need to adju t the Sag etting on the fork. Thi i
to en ure the fork are et-up correctly for your own
body weight, o the fork will perform a intended.
To et Sag on a front fork, you need to mea ure the
amount the fork compre e when you it on the bike
in the normal riding po ition. We recommend for the
be t performance to run approximately (20%) Sag on
the front fork.
Sag on a coil prung fork i controlled by adju ting the preloading of the coil pring . We recom-
mend you refer to your fork owner manual or relevant web ite for detailed information about
your fork et up and performance relating to all control and feature of your fork.
Rebound Damping adju tment:
Thi adju tment fine-tune the peed at which the wheel return to it normal ride height
after hitting a bump. To demon trate the effect of thi function, turn the rebound adju ter
to it lowe t etting. Pre down on the handlebar to compre the fork , then relea e
the load. The u pen ion recover very lowly to it original po ition.
Repeat the above with the adju ter turned to the fa te t etting and the difference will be
een immediately the load i relea ed. We recommend the optimum etting i to adju t the
re-bound damping to be a low a po ible, but not o low that the normal ride height i
not recovered. On very rough terrain, if the bike become progre ively lower a more
bump are hit then the re-bound damping i et too low. On the other hand if the bike
feel choppy and not plu h then the re-bound damping i too fa t. A bit of trial and error i
needed to get the exact etting. WARNING. Only make adju tment to your fork while
tationary, and not when riding.
IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTE:
Alway top riding when making adju tment of any kind to the bicycle!
3.5: SET UP OF REAR DAMPER (eS-140 only)
Tools Required: Good Quality Shock Pump.
Small Ruler
Your Whyte bike i fitted with an air pring rear hock ab orber. Thi mean that the air
pre ure in the hock ab orber determine the pring rate. The correct ‘ ag’ can be found
u ing the liding ‘O’ ring fitted to the haft of the hock pi ton. Slide the ‘O’ ring again t
the hock body. Then gently it on the bike in your normal riding po ition and with normal

riding gear, including back pack if applicable, and al o rai e your feet off the floor. Careful-
ly di mount and mea ure the di tance the ‘O’ ring ha moved away from the hock body.
The optimum di tance for the Quad-Link rear u pen ion y tem i hown in the table to
the right. If there i le than that di tance fit a hock pump and relea e air pre ure. Con-
ver ely if there i greater than that di tance, fit the hock pump and increa e air pre ure.
Repeat the ‘ ag’ te t until the recommended ag di tance i achieved.
Rear Su pen ion Set-up - Rebound Damping:
When the damper unit i being compre ed, thi i known a the compre ion troke. A
the u pen ion unit recover from compre ion back toward it full length, thi i called
the re-bound troke. All the hock fitted a tandard to the Whyte full u pen ion moun-
tain bike have factory et compre ion damping, and manually adju table rebound damp-
ing.
Rebound Damping Adju tment:
The advice in ection 3.3 about the fork rebound damping adju tment al o applie to the
rear hock.
IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTE:
Alway top riding when making adju tment of any kind to the bicycle!
Platform Damping Adju tment.
The rear Shock fitted to your Whyte bike may have a “platform” facility to adju t the low
peed compre ion damping, eg Fox “3po w/Adj” or SRAM RockShox “Motion Control”.
Plea e refer to the relevant hock manufacture technical information to learn how to ad-
ju t the e feature .
Plea e note, that the Whyte rear u pen ion y tem have been de igned not to rely on
exce ive low peed compre ion damping to obtain efficient pedalling performance, and
turning on too much low peed damping on the rear hock will compromi e the u pen-
ion en itivity to mall bump ab orption and traction.
3.6: BATTERY MAINTAINENCE
Tools Required: Shimano charging equipment.
Given that the combined ma of the electric power y tem make the e bike ignificantly
heavier than equivalent pedal cycle , it i important to avoid running out of battery power
whil t riding. Otherwi e the bike will be quite a challenge to continue riding! Therefore it
i advi ed to implement the recommendation made by Shimano concerning battery
maintenance, charging regime and replacement/di po al, a detailed within the Shimano
STEPS U er manual li ted on page 9.
