instructions).
Note: If you step on the scale before “0.0” appears or if your feet are not
aligned on the electrodes, the scale will not function properly.
Weight and Body Fat
What is body fat percentage?
Body fat percentage is the weight of body fat divided by total body weight
and multiplied by 100 – for example: 36kg fat / 90kg total body weight x 100
= 40% body fat.
How does the scale calculate body fat percentage?
Body fat is calculated using a method called Bioelectrical Impedance
Analysis (BIA). A very weak electric current is passed through the body to
measure the impedance (resistance) to lean body mass and fat mass.
This current passes more quickly through lean body mass (due to its water

content) than it does through fat mass (which does not contain water). The
scale uses a mathematical formula to calculate body fat percentage from
the speed of the electric current passing through the body.
Is the scale accurate?
The scale does not have the same level of accuracy found in body analysis
equipment used in scientic laboratories and some clinical settings. It is
designed to be a practical and reliable tool for monitoring body composition
as a guide only.
It is important to note that a number of factors affect body water
measurements regardless of the sophistication of equipment used. Body
water uctuates a lot more than body fat does (see below and ‘Using the
scale for tracking progress’). Being under-hydrated (e.g. immediately after
exercise) will give you a higher fat percentage reading than when you are
fully hydrated.
It is therefore advisable to check your body fat percentage under similar
circumstances on each occasion e.g. rst thing in the morning after passing
urine and before eating or drinking anything.
A range of circumstances can alter (increase or decrease) body water
content:
• Eating and drinking (including alcohol)
• Stage of the menstrual cycle
• A sauna, hot bath or shower
• Intense exercise
• Fever
• Extreme environments (hot or cold)
Just like weight measurements, it is advisable to pay more attention to
changes in body fat percentage over a period of weeks and months. Daily
body fat percentage measurements may uctuate considerably due to
short-term changes in body water from day to day.
I’ve lost weight but my body fat percentage hasn’t changed much
The proportion (percentage) of body fat relative to total body weight may
not decrease much in the very early stages of any weight loss plan. Calories
from body carbohydrate stores (called glycogen), and water bonded to the
glycogen, are released following reduced calorie intake.

The amount of water lost from these stores can mean that weight losses in
the early weeks of a weight loss plan may be more than you will see later on.
Also, all weight loss plans result in a reduction in lean body mass as well as
fat mass – as the whole body gets smaller. So, losing an equivalent amount
of each type of body tissue (say 0.5kg of fat mass and 0.5kg of lean mass)
might not show any change in body fat percentage.
Note: regular physical activity helps to minimise loss of lean body mass
when following any weight loss plan – resistance exercise, such as weight
training, is particularly good for helping to preserve lean body mass whilst
following a weight loss plan.
Note: tracking reductions in your waist measurements (using a tape
measure or judging by how your clothes t) can be a useful indicator of fat
loss. Following a weight loss plan and including physical activity is likely to
result in changes to body composition: less fat mass in relation to lean body
mass. Lean body mass has a smaller volume (pound for pound) than fat, so
takes up less space in the body – therefore taking measurements can help
you notice a changing shape.
About BMI
The Body Mass Index (or ‘BMI’ as it is more commonly known) is
recommended by government health ofcials, scientists and health
professionals working in the nutrition and obesity eld as a reliable method
of assessing weight and disease risk.
BMI is calculated using your present weight and height. It’s recommended
because it is simple to use, correlates with body fat, and applies to men
and women. A BMI of 20-25 indicates a healthy weight, 25-29.9 indicates
overweight, and 30 and above is indicative of obesity. A BMI above 25 is not
healthy for most people.
BMI is the best tool we have as a broad indicator for a healthy weight, and
one which can be used quickly and easily. However, the measurement of
BMI does not indicate the proportion of body fat making up a person’s
weight.

Body water (hydration level)
Our daily water requirement, which can vary from day-to-day and from
person-to-person, depends on a number of factors e.g. level of physical
activity, environmental conditions, health status.
The general recommendation is to drink 6-8 glasses of uids (this can
include water, tea and coffee) daily. Fluid can also come from the food you
eat – like uid-rich fruits, vegetables and soups.
A useful indicator of whether or not we are consuming enough water is
how often we urinate and the colour / shade of our urine. For example,
a person passing dark urine and only urinating twice a day is likely to be
under-hydrated.
Note: urine colour can also be affected by certain foods, medications and
vitamin supplements.
Bone mass – what is it?
Bone is a living, growing tissue. During youth, your body makes new bone
tissue faster than it breaks down older bone. In young adulthood, bone mass
is at its peak; after that, bone loss starts to outpace bone growth, and bone
mass decreases. But it’s a long and very slow process that can be slowed
down even more through calcium-rich diets and weight-bearing exercise.
Who should monitor bone mass?
Most people have no need to monitor bone mass, but certain groups –
postmenopausal women, men and women with certain diseases, and
anyone who takes medications that affect bone tissue – might want to
watch for decreases in bone mass. The bone mass reading is to be used as
guide only. Watch for trends over time and contact your healthcare provider
for a more detailed explanation of the readings and with any questions or
concerns.
Three-point action summary

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Please note: The diagrams in this instruction book are as they appear in
the ‘St’ setting. The number conguration changes for ‘Kg’ or ‘Lb’ settings.
To change the scale from ‘St’ (stones and pounds) to ‘Kg’ (kilos) or ‘Lb’
(pounds), press the switch on the underside of the scale.
Q: The scale shows ‘Err’.
A1: Make sure to wait for ‘0:0’ before stepping onto the scale (‘0.0’ for Kg
or Lb settings).
A2: ‘Err’ may display if you exceed the maximum weight capacity of the
scale – check the ‘FEATURES’ section.
A3: ‘Err’ may display if your body fat % is more than 50% or less than
5.0% - see the Body Analysis Range Table.
A4: If ‘Err’ displays after the body weight reading, instead of body analysis
readings, check that you are BAREFOOT – bare skin must touch the
metal strips; no socks, tights, stockings, shoes or slippers. Check
your feet are positioned correctly.
A5: If ‘Err’ displays after the body weight reading, instead of body analysis
readings and your feet are bare, check the condition of the skin on
your feet. Hard or dry skin on your feet can prevent proper contact
being made with the electrodes in the metal strips. If your skin is very
dry, try applying a small amount of moisturiser to your feet and allow
to dry thoroughly before using the scale, to avoid slipping.

A6: Check you have entered all your details correctly when programming
the scale.
A7: If you have tried all the above and the scale is still not working
correctly, for further advice, contact the Conair Customer Care Line on:
0845 2 668951 (09:00 to 17:00 Monday to Friday) or alternatively email
your enquiry to ukinfo@conair.com.
Q: Is my scale accurate? / I get different readings when I get on and
off the scale several times.
A1: Make sure the scale is on a at, level surface for accurate operation
and safety.
A2: This scale is a precise measuring instrument that is most accurate
when weighing a stationary object. To ensure accurate readings,
always try to stand on the same area of the scale’s platform and DO
NOT MOVE.
A3: It’s important not get on and off the scale repeatedly. As the scale is
so accurate, even a slight change in your position will cause a different
reading and the scale will round up or down to the nearest increment,
further adding to the difference.
A4: Do not keep moving the scale to a new location, as this can cause
different readings. Try to keep it in the same place.
A5: It is best to measure yourself using the same scale, as results can vary
between scales due to manufacturing tolerances.
REPLACEMENT OF THE BATTERY
