THE RISK OF SIDE RAIL ENTRAPMENT
Contact Wy’East Medical before using this equipment if you are unable to understand the Side Rail Entrapment
information below. Failure to comply with this information can result in serious patient injury or death.
The term "Side Rail Entrapment" describes an event in which a patient in the TotaLift-II is entangled or trapped in the
space in or about a side rail, mattress, or mattress support platform.
The risk of entrapment can be increased with patient conditions such as restlessness, seizure disorders (uncontrolled
body movements), dementia, mental deterioration or sleeping problems. Small body size and Pediatric patients may
also increase the risk of entrapment.
The side rails are intended to prevent a patient from inadvertently moving out of the TotaLift-II, provide a sense of
security and assistance to a patient for repositioning. The side rails are never to be used to restrain an uncooperative
patient or to prevent a patient from exiting the TotaLift-II as they wish. The risk of entrapment is significantly increased
if side rails are used as a means of patient restraint.
The TotaLift-II side rails are intended to be used in pairs. Both the left and right side rail must be in the up and locked
position when in use except when transferring a patient to or from the TotaLift-II. Use of only one side rail can increase
the risk of entrapment.
The side rails should not be used for moving the TotaLift-II as they could become deformed or otherwise damaged if
excessive force is applied to them. Deformed or damaged side rails should not be used due to the possibility of
increased gaps that can increase the risk of entrapment.
Accessories are available that reduce the openings in existing side rails that could cause entrapment. Prior to using any
such accessories the patient must be assessed by a qualified professional to determine the suitability of using that
accessory. Refer to the Hospital Bed Safety Workgroup’s “A Guide for Modifying Bed Systems and Using Accessories to
Reduce Risk of Entrapment” found at http://www.fda.gov for more information on this subject.
The TotaLift-II is designed solely for use with Wy’East Medical accessories and mattresses. Accessories and mattresses
designed by other manufacturers may have variations in construction that have not been tested by Wy’East Medical and
may significantly increase the risk of patient entrapment.

PROCEDURES
TO TRANSFER A PATIENT FROM A BED TO THE TOTALIFT-II
Lower back rest (see Adjustable Backrest, pg 5)
and side rails (see Side Rails, pg 6) to lowest
position. Position the TotaLift-II next to the bed,
set the brake (see Central Brake / Steer, pg 4),
and raise the litter top to 2 or 3 inches above
the patient's bed (see Hydraulic Foot Control,
pg 5). Using the crank handle (see Lateral
Patient Transfer System, pg 4) extend the
transfer pad 2 to 3 inches over the bed.
Lower the litter top until it rests on patient's
bed. To prepare the patient for transfer, roll
the patient onto their side using a draw sheet,
slip sheet, or slide sheet. Continue to extend
the transfer pad until it either comes in contact
with the patient's back or reaches the red line
printed on the litter top of the TotaLift-II. Tuck
the leading edge of the transfer pad under the
patient and allow the patient to roll backward
onto the transfer pad.
With the draw sheet, slip sheet, or slide sheet,
adjust the patient to the center of the transfer
pad. Using the crank handle, retract the patient
and the pad to the center of the TotaLift-II.
Store away crank handle and lift the side rails
and into upright position. Then adjust the
TotaLift-II for patient's comfort and
transportation (see to Adjust the TotaLift-II for
Comfort or Transport, pg 12).

PROCEDURES
TO ADJUST THE TOTALIFT II FOR COMFORT OR TRANSPORT
Make sure to have crank handles stored away, and side rails in upright position, then release brake and pull the TotaLift-
II away from bed or any other obstructions. Adjust the foot rest (see Adjustable Foot Rest, pg 5), leg rest (see Adjustable
Leg Rest, pg 6), and back rest (see Adjustable Back Rest, pg 5), for patients comfort. Do not transport patient in the
highest position, lower the TotaLift-II (see Hydraulic Foot Control, pg 5) for transportation. Secure patient with safety
straps, and adjust for snug fit. Place the IV pole (see IV Pole) or oxygen tank (see Oxygen Tank Holder, pg 4) at this time,
if necessary. Trendelenburg can also be activated if necessary (see Trendelenburg, pg 7). Set the chair to Free Steer or
Tracking modes (see Central Brake / Steer, pg 4) for transportation. Then use Black Push Bar (see Black Push Bar, pg 6) to
push and navigate the TotaLift-II, much like a wheel chair.
SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS FOR ALL PROCEDURES
Prior to using the TotaLift-II for transfer, transport or any other procedure the patient must be assessed by a qualified
professional to determine the suitability of using the TotaLift-II with that patient.
When transporting or leaving the patient unattended in the TotaLift-II adjust it to the lowest position.
When routing cables or tubing from the patient or other equipment care must be taken not to squeeze or otherwise
impair them between parts of the TotaLift-II.
When using a mobile hoist in conjunction with the TotaLift-II be sure it fits properly with the undercarriage and that it
can be used according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
