UsingAn OptionalAC PowerAdaptor
Plug the DCoutput cablefrom an optional Yamaha PA-5 AC PowerAdaptor
into theDCIN jack on the rearpanelofthe PSR-400/PSR-500,then plug the AC
cableofthe PowerAdaptorintoa convenient wall AC power socket.
The internal batteries areautomatically disconnected when an AC Power Adap-
torisused.
•UseONLYa YamahaPA-5 AC PowerAdaptortopoweryour instrumentfrom theAC mains.
OtheradaptorsmaybedamagedbyusewiththePSR-400/PSR-500,andtheymay even
causeseriousdamagetoyourPSR-400/PSR-500.

Caution:
1.Whenthebatteriesrundown,replacethemwithacompletesetof sixnewbatteries.
NEVER mixoldandnewbatteries.
2.Donotusedifferentkindsofbatteriesatthesametime.
3.Topreventpossibledamageduetobatteryleakage,removethebatteriesfrom theinstru-
mentifitisnottobeusedforanextendedperiodoftime.
*IffreshbatteriesoranAC adaptorarenotimmediatelyavailable,itmaybepossibleto use
thePSR-400/PSR-500foralittlewhilelongerbyturningthepoweroffandthenonagain,
andplayingata lowvolumesetting.
UsingBatteries
The PSR-400/PSR-500isinitially supplied with a setofbatteries.Depending on
storageconditions, the suppliedbatteriesmay not lastaslongasa fresh set.
When thebatteries needtobereplaced,"batt"will appearonthe MULTI DIS-
PLAY. When this display appearsthe PSR-400/PSR-500will not operate,and the
power must beturned off while either thebatteriesarereplacedoran AC adaptoris
connected.*Internal data will beretained for up toabout 10minutes while the
batteriesarechangedoran AC adaptorisconnected.
When the batteriesfail, replacethem with six1.5VSUM-1, "D"size,R-20 or
equivalent batteries, asfollows:
1.Openthe battery compartment coverlocatedon the instrument's bottom panel
andremovetheoldbatteries.
2.Insertthe sixnew batteries,being careful tofollow the polaritymarkings on the
inside ofthe compartment.
3.Replace the compartment cover,making sure that itlocksfirmly in place.
Your PSR-400orPSR-500 will run either from batteries*oran optionalpower
adaptor. Followthe instructions below according to the power sourceyou intendto
use.
* WhenbatteriesareusedthesoundofthePSR-400/PSR-500maybedistortedat highvol-
umelevels.Thisisbecausethepoweroftheamplifierisreducedwhenbatteriesareused.

POWERSUPPLY
PREPARATION

USINGHEADPHONESORAN EXTERNALSOUNDSYSTEM
Astandard pairofstereoheadphones can bepluggedinto the rear-panelHEAD-
PHONES/AUX. OUT jackfor private practiceorlate-night playing. Theinternal
speakersystem isautomatically shut off when a pair ofheadphones isplugged into
the HEADPHONES jack. The HEADPHONES/AUX. OUT jack canalsobeused
todeliver theoutput ofthePSR-400/PSR-500toa keyboardamplifier, stereosound
system, mixing consoleortaperecorder.
Stereosoundsystem
THEFOOTPEDAL
Plug the supplied foot pedalinto therear-panelFOOTPEDAL jack.The foot
pedalfunctions asa damperpedal,controlling sustain. Pressthepedaltosustain
notesafter the keys arereleased.
•Be surethat you do not pressthepedalwhile inserting the plug into the FOOT
PEDAL jackorwhile turning thepower on. If you do,the ON/OFFstatus ofthe
footswitch will bereversed.This function hasbeenimplemented toalloweither
press-to-makeorpress-to-breakcontact typefootswitches tobeusedwith the
PSR-400/PSR-500.
•Sustain cannot beappliedtovoicesin which releasingthekey playeddoesnot
stopthesound:e.g.MUTE GUITAR (26).MARIMBA (41),PERCUSSIONS
(99), etc.
THEMUSICSTAND
Insert the bottom edgeof the music standinto the slotlocatedat the rearofthe
PSR-400/PSR-500controlpanel.

GLE FINGER orFINGERED type fingering accordingtothe

OVERALL CONTROL

POWER Button
Pressthe [POWER]button toturn thepower on oroff.
Auto PowerOFF
Toprevent unnecessary battery drainage, the PSR-400/
PSR-500 features an Auto Power OFFfunction that auto-
matically turns the power OFFif the instrument isnot
used — i.e.no buttons orkeys arepressedorno automatic
featuresare operating — for approximately 10minutes.
The Auto Power OFFfunction doesnot operatewhen
the PSR-400/PSR-500ispowered from an optional AC
Power Adaptor.
MODE
The [MODE]button determinestheoperationalmode
ofthe PSR-400/PSR-500.Pressthe [MODE]button as
many timesasnecessaryuntil theindicatorcorresponding
tothe desiredmodelights:
NORMAL
Thisisthenormal modeofoperationin which you can
selectand play a singlevoice(ortwo voicesifthe DUAL
VOICE function isused),and selectstylesfor rhythm-
only accompaniment
SPLIT
In thismodedifferent voicescanbeselectedforthe left-
andright-hand sectionsofthekeyboard.Seepage23for
details.

Thismodeprovidesautomatic rhythm,bass,andorchestra
accompaniment that you cancontrolby playing just one,

TheFINGERED modeprovidesautomaticrhythm,bass,
andorchestraaccompanimentbasedonchordsyouplayin
theleft-hand sectionofthe keyboard.Seepage18for

DSP (DigitalSoundProcessing— PSR-500only)
The[DSP]button providestwo digitaleffects that you
canusefor extra depthand expressivepower.This button
determines thetypeofeffect tobeused,while the
REVERB DEPTHcontrolsin theVOICE sectionallow
thedepthofthe effect tobeindividually setfor eachvoice
—including the left- andright-hand splitvoices,andthe
mainand sub dualvoices.
Eachtime the[DSP]buttonispressedthenext effect is
selectedand thecorrespondingindicatorwilllight. No
effect isselectedwhen the OFFindicatorislit.
OFF
No effect isproduced.
ROOM
This settingaddsa reverb effect tothe sound that is
similar tothetype ofacoustic reverberation you would
hearin a room.
HALL
Fora spaciousreverb sound, usethe HALL setting.
Thiseffect simulates the natural reverberationofa concert
hall.
Almost allof theautoaccompanimentstylesareprogrammedto
usetheDSPeffects, butnoeffectwillbeproducedifDSPisset
to OFF.
MASTER VOLUME
Usethe MASTER VOLUME control toadjust the over-
allvolume ofthe PSR-400/PSR-500— including the
sound of the voices being played, auto accompaniment,
song memory playback, etc.
ACCOMPANIMENT VOLUME
Although the MASTER VOLUME controlcanbeused
tosetthe overall volume level, the ACCOMPANIMENT

ducesno sound while 24 isthe highest volume level.The

way in either direction, the current pitchbend range value
willappearon the MULTI DISPLAY (seebelow).

keyboardtotherangeofasingerorotherinstrumentalist.

The availabletemporange isfrom 40 to240beatsper
minute. Eachaccompaniment stylehasa different "de-
fault" tempo which isautomatically setwhenever a new
styleisselected(but not when a new styleisselected
while theaccompaniment isplaying).The default tempo
for the currently selectedaccompaniment stylecanbe
recalledat any time by pressingboth theTEMPO
buttons at the sametime.
SPLITPOINTCHANGE
Separatesplitpointscanbesetfor theSPLIT,FIN-
GERED, and SINGLE FINGER modes.The default split
point settingsareasfollows:
SPLITmode:C#3
SINGLEFINGERmode:D2
FINGEREDmode:G2
The splitpoint for eachmodecan besettoany other
key while that mode isselectedby pressingthe desired
split-pointkey while holding the[SPLITPOINT
CHANGE] button.
The splitpoint isshown on theMULTI DISPLAYfor
aslongasthe[SPLITPOINTCHANGE]button isheld.
The C3key,for example,would bedisplayedas"c3".
F#2 would
be displayed as "F -2". The sharp isindicated
by thelit barbetweenthe "F"andthe"2."
The SPLIT,SINGLEFINGER, and FINGERED mode
splitpointsareretainedin memory and will berecalled
whenever the correspondingmode isselected.
Note that the split-pointkeyisincluded in the right-
hand sectionofthekeyboard.

STYLE SELECT
Selectany ofthe PSR-400/PSR-500's 100 accompani-
mentstyles by using one ofthe two following methods:
1: Chooseone ofthe 100accompaniment styles — num-
bered"00"through "99"— shown on the STYLE LIST
then enter its number using the numeric STYLE SELECT
buttons. ToselectBAROQUE (number 27),for example,
first press"2"and then "7."The number "27"should then
bedisplayed on theleft two digits ofthe MULTI DISPLAY.
2: The [+]and [-]buttons in the STYLE SELECTgroup
canbeused toincrement (increaseby one)ordecrement
(decreaseby one)thecurrent accompaniment style number.
Pressthe [+]button briefly toselectthe accompaniment
style onenumber higher than the current accompaniment
style, orthe [-]button toselectthe accompaniment style one
number lower than the current accompaniment style. Ifyou
hold the [+]or[-]button down, theaccompaniment style
number will increment ordecrement continuously— simply

StartingtheAccompaniment
Pressthe [START/STOP]button tostartthe selected
accompaniment immediately. The rhythm sound will be-
gin playing and, if theFINGERED orSINGLE FINGER
mode isselectedvia the OVERALL CONTROL section
MODEbutton, the bassand chordpartswill alsobegin
playing assoonasthe first note orchord isplayed on the
keyboard.
Pressthe [SYNC-START ON/OFF]button ifyou want
the accompaniment tostart when you playthefirst noteon
thekeyboard. In thiscasethe accompaniment isstartedby
playing in the left-hand sectionofthekeyboardifthe
FINGERED, SINGLE FINGER orSPLITmodeis
selected,orby playing anywhere onthe keyboardif the
NORMAL mode isselected.If you pressthe [SYNC-
START ON/OFF— RHYTHM STOP]button, the right
two dotsin the MULTIDISPLAY and the [SYNC-

A different accompaniment style can be selected at any time
while the accompaniment is playing. The style number display
will change as soon as the selection is made, but the new style
will begin playback from the top of the next measure. The tempo
will not change when the new style begins playing.
TheNORMALandBRIDGEVariations
Eachstylehastwo main variations — NORMAL and
BRIDGE.Ifthe [NORMAL]or[BRIDGE]button is
pressedwhile the rhythm isplaying, the corresponding
variationwillbeginfrom the topofthe next measure.You
canalsoselect[NORMAL]or[BRIDGE]before starting
theaccompaniment.
StartingtheAccompanimentwithan
Introduction
Any ofthe PSR-400/PSR-500accompaniment patterns
can bestartedwith an appropriateintroduction by pressing
the[INTRO]button and then the [START/STOP]button.
Once the[INTRO]button ispressed,the [INTRO]indi-
catorwill belit continuously and the [NORMAL]or
[BRIDGE] indicator willflash toindicatewhich variation
willplay when theintroduction hasfinished. Youcan
change the "destination"variation by pressingthe[NOR-
MAL] or[BRIDGE]button while itsindicatorisflashing.
When the introduction ends, the [INTRO]indicatorwill
goout and the [NORMAL] or[BRIDGE] indicatorwill
light continuously.
It is possible to start the accompaniment from any variation —
even the ending — by pressing the corresponding button prior to
pressing the [START/STOP] button. The destination [NORMAL]
or [BRIDGE] variation can be selected in the normal way.
If the [INTRO], [FILL IN1], [FILL IN 2], or [ENDING] pattern is
selected prior to pressing the [START/STOP] button and then
the same button is pressed again or the currently flashing [NOR-
MAL] or [BRIDGE] button is pressed, its indicator will go out and
the destination [NORMAL] or [BRIDGE] pattern indicator will light
continuously. Once started the accompaniment will then begin
directly from the NORMAL or BRIDGE pattern.
The [INTRO] button can be used to select the introduction
pattern even while the accompaniment is playing.
Adding Fill-ins
The PSR-400and PSR-500 providetwo types offill-ins
(rhythmic variations) — one which leadstotheNORMAL
variation and one which leadstothe BRIDGE variation.
Pressthe [FILLIN 1]button at any time while the accom-
paniment isplaying toadd a shortfill-in and goto(or
return to)the NORMAL variation, orpressthe [FILLIN
2]button toadda short fill-in and goto(orreturn to)the
BRIDGE variation.
The [NORMAL] indicator will flash while FILLIN 1
plays, and the [BRIDGE] indicator willflashwhile FILL
IN 2 plays. You canchange the variationthat willbegin
playing after the fill-inby pressingthe desiredvariation
button while the indicator isstillflashing.
If you hold the[FILLIN 1]or[FILLIN 2]button, the
fill-in pattern will repeatuntil the button isreleased,then
theNORMAL orBRIDGE variationwill beginfrom the
beginning ofthe next measure.
If the [FILL IN 1] or [FILL IN 2] button is pressed during the last
1/4-note of a measure, the fill in will begin from the first beat of
the next measure. If pressed at any other time the fill-in will
begin immediately.
It is also possible to start the accompaniment with a fill-in by
pressing the desired FILL IN button prior to pressing the
[START/STOP] button. The destination [NORMAL] or [BRIDGE]
variation can be selected in the normal way.
StoppingtheAccompaniment
An accompaniment inprogresscanbestoppedimmedi-
atelyby pressingthe[START/STOP]button orthe
[SYNC-STARTON/OFF— RHYTHM STOP]button.In
thelattercasethesynchro startmode will beengaged
when the accompaniment stops.The accompanimentcan
alsobestoppedwith an appropriateendingby pressingthe
[ENDING]button.
The ending will begin from the first beat of the next measure.
If the [FILL IN 1] or [FILL IN 2] button is pressed while the ending
pattern is playing, a fill-in will be played, followed by a return to
the normal or bridge pattern.

Ifyou pressa "C"keyinthe left-hand sectionofthe
keyboard,forexample,aC-majoraccompanimentwillbe
played.Pressanotherkeyin the left-hand sectionofthe
keyboardtoselectanewchord. Thekey youpresswill
always determine the "root"ofthe chordplayed(i.e."C"
for a C chord).
PlayingMinor,Seventh,andMinor-seventh
ChordsIntheSingle-fingerMode
Fora minorchord,presstherootkeyanda blackkeyto
itsleft.
Fora seventh chord,pressthe rootkeyanda whitekey
to itsleft.
