2 Hardware installation of the OS 11000 / OK 300 Hybrid color
2.1 Before you begin
The installation of the OS11000 / OK 300 Hybrid color can be done by two persons. For
the first installation of the book cradle, at least five persons are required.
This manual describes the installation for both the OS 11000 and OK 300 Hybrid color.
Some works are only necessary for the OK 300 Hybrid color and do not apply to the OS
11000. They are marked with ‘Hybrid only’.
When installing the book cradle in the scanner base, be careful not to damage the
glass plate! The protective foil wrapped around the glass plate should not be
removed, until the book cradle is installed in the correct position.
2.2 Unpacking the scanner
• Remove first the top cover of the transport container
• Remove then the beams [12] that keep the scanner unit in transport position
• Remove the side-, front- and rear covers [13] of the transport container
• Remove the boxes with the accessories and air compressor
• Remove the fixing screws and the beams that keep the book cradle in position
(front and rear, [14] and [15])
• Remove the fixing screws at the scanner base strut [16]
• Lift the scanner base over the book cradle and move it out to the rear side. The
scanner should be lift at the marked points only (at the end of the aluminum profile
frame, Fig. 9)
• Lift the book cradle finally out of the transport container. The book cradle can be
rolled on even floors.

2.3 Preparing the book cradle
Before installing the scanner at its final destination, you should prepare the book cradle.
Plug in the air hose [17] and power cable [18] first. The access is easier if the book cradle
is not installed in the scanner base yet. Use the power cable with the male and female
connector.
Fig. 11
2.4 Installing the scanner base
When you install the OS11000 at its final destination you should respect the following
points:
• You need an even floor
• The room should be as clean as possible, avoid dusty or humid environment
• The scanner should not be installed directly below ceiling lights or close to windows to
avoid light reflexes on the glass plate
• You should install the scanner back side at least 1,5m (5ft.) away from walls. If this is
not possible you need at least this space on the front side.
Put the scanner base to the point where it should finally stand. Turn the adjustment screws
on the base [19] to a level of 45 mm above the floor (Fig. 13). You will have to do a fine
adjustment at the adjustment nut [20] afterwards, so do not lock yet the counter nuts [21].

2.5 Installing the book cradle
Lift up the scanner base approx. 20 cm above the floor. Thereto you need at least 4
persons or a lifting gear which can lift all 4 edges of the scanner base at the same time.
An additional person can now roll the book cradle into the frame. To have a balanced
center of gravity, you should move the scanner unit manhandled to the middle of the base
before lifting.
Be careful not to damage the glass plate of the book cradle when setting down the
scanner base slowly. There is less space between the aluminum frame of the base
and the glass plate!
When the scanner base is installed, you can move the book cradle backwards until it
approaches the fixing brackets [22], which fix the book cradle system at the scanner base
on the left and right rear side.
Remove the fixing screws at the book cradle [23] , slide in the book cradle and reinstall the
fixing screws. Do not tighten the screws yet, the top of the glass plate must be leveled
before!

After the installation the brackets should look like this:

2.6 Leveling the scanner base and book cradle
For the correct function of the scanner and the camera it is absolutely necessary to level
both, the scanner base and the book cradle.
First the scanner base must be leveled. After that, the top of the glass plate of book cradle
will be leveled against the scanner base.
During the adjustment of scanner base and book cradle, the scanner unit must be
moved to the ‘home’ position, which is the outer left position. Otherwise the
scanner unit could apply pressure to the glass plate and damage it.
To level the scanner base, use a spirit level [24]. Put the spirit level on top of the front side
guide rail [25] like shown in Fig. 18. Now you can adjust the level from left to right by
turning the adjustment screws [26] at the scanner base up- or downwards (see also Fig.
13).
Fig. 18
24
25
26

Hardware installation
14
In the next step you should put the spirit level on the aluminum frame at the gap between
glass plate [27] and scanner unit [28].
Fig. 19
Now you can adjust the level from front to back by turning the adjustment screws at the
scanner base up- or downwards (see also Fig. 13).
When this is done, go back to the first position and check again the level left to right.
Repeat this two adjustment steps until both levels are even. Then the scanner base is
leveled.
Make sure that none of the scanner base struts will hang freely in the air! This can happen
if you turn one adjustment screw too much up- or downwards or the floor is very uneven.
Take now the black spacers [29] for adjustment of the book cradle and put them on top of
the glass plate. The spacers have a thickness of 3mm and will help you to adjust the
correct space between bottom of the scanner unit and top of the glass plate.
Put the spacers first at the left edge [30] of the glass plate, one in front and one in rear.
Then move the scanner unit slowly from the ‘home’ position towards the glass plate.
It might be that the scanner unit hits the top of the glass plate when doing this. In
this case the level of the book cradle has to be lowered by turning the adjustment
screws on the support of the book cradle (see Fig. 22).
Move the scanner unit forward until it is in a position like shown in Fig. 20. Turn the
adjustment screws on the support of the book cradle (Fig. 22 [31]) downwards (while
checking the gap between glass and scanner with the spacer.
You should be able to move the spacer without using much power. If the spacer is
clamped, lower the book cradle a little bit.
Do this adjustment for the front and rear side of the scanner unit separately. Then move
the scanner and the spacers to the right edge of the glass plate (like shown in Fig. 21 and
repeat the adjustment. When finished, turn back to the left edge and check again the
levels.

When the leveling is done, move the scanner unit manhandled from the outer left to the
outer right position and check if it does not touch the glass plate in any position.
Fix the 4 lock nuts (Fig. 13, [21]) at the scanner base and the two fixing screws on the
book cradle (Fig. 14 and Fig. 15 [23]).
Move the scanner unit manhandled back to the home position to make sure it does not
touch anything.
Remove the spacers from the glass plate.

2.7 Installing the column of the camera (hybrid only)
After the installation of the scanner base, the column of the camera can be attached at the
back side of the base.
Fig. 23
Preparing the installation:
Put the aluminum plate [32] below the column on the floor. Install the two fixing pins [33]
for the lamp system at the rear of the scanner base like shown in Fig. 23.
Fig. 24
Fig. 24 shows the column lying on the floor. Remove the fixing screws [34] for the column
(two on the left and two on the right side). Do not yet remove the scotch tape [35] fixing the
flat ribbon cables at the column.

Lift up the column and install the four fixing screws [34]. Do not tighten them yet.
Put in the four dowel pins [35] like shown in Fig. 26 ff. and drive them in with a hammer.
These pins are required to bring the column in the correct position against the scanner
base. For a later removal of the column, these pins have a M4 thread inside. So a M4
screw can be screwed in to pull the pins out.

After the installation of the dowel pins you should check if the column is in the upright
position (see Fig. 30). Check the positions ‘front to rear’ and ‘left to right’.
If the column is not upright, you should recheck the leveling of the scanner base.
As soon as the position is correct, you can tighten the 4 fixing screws at the column.
