ZNYX’s ZX361-ISL Adapter is a PCI network
adapter that adds a unique capability to a network
server by enabling simultaneous access by both the
Token Ring and the Ethernet/Fast Ethernet clients
over ISL. And because the ZX361-ISL Adapter
supports Cisco’s Fast EtherChannel, now Token Ring
packets can travel over a 100 Mbps to 400 Mbps (200
Mbps to 800 Mbps full-duplex) bandwidth link, to
and from the server — eliminating the bottleneck
normally associated with 16 Mbps Token Ring server
connections. You can set up your ZX361-ISL
Adapter(s) for any of the following combinations:

1.2
Because the ZX361-ISL Adapter is specifically
designed to take full advantage of Cisco’s Token
Ring Inter-Switch Link (TRISL) encapsulation
technology, your Token Ring clients will now be
accessing the server over a 100 Mbps or faster trunk
rather than through a single 16 Mbps Token Ring
connection. When multiple clients access the server,
this far greater bandwidth will prevent the slowdown
normally caused by network congestion.
By using multiple ZX361-ISL Adapters in your
server, you can achieve up to 800 Mbps full-duplex
bandwidth for even faster access. Multiple adapters
are especially beneficial to Ethernet and Fast Ethernet
clients that are accessing the server over ISL.
35272&2/6
1.3
The ZX361-ISL Adapter supports simultaneous
encapsulation of both Token Ring and Ethernet/Fast
Ethernet packets. Figure 1.1 on page 1-2 shows two
servers, each with a ZX361-ISL Adapter,

The ZX361-ISL Adapter employs ZNYX’s
revolutionary Redundant Array of Independent
Netports (RAIN) technology to deliver unparalleled
features to your server. Using up to four ZX361-ISL
Adapters in your server, you can configure for
Enterprise-Level services such as Link Aggregation
(trunking), Load Balancing, and Fast Failover. Or,
you may choose to place a link on active standby for
automatic Failover activation. Whenever an active
network adapter, hub, Switch, router, port, or cable
fails, RAIN technology detects the failure, shuts
down the affected link, and transfers traffic to a
standby or other link.
By configuring four adapters with RAINlink’s Link
Aggregation, you can achieve up to 800 Mbps
bandwidth for Token Ring and Ethernet traffic to and
from your server.
08/7,3/(9/$16
1.5
With the ZX361-ISL Adapter, ZNYX’s RAIN
technology has been further enhanced to support
multiple VLANs, limited only by how many the
server, operating system, and Switch can support.
The previous limitation of one VLAN per adapter is
now removed.

2.1
This User’s Guide assumes a strong familiarity with
Cisco’s concepts of VLANs, ISL, and Token Ring
over ISL (TRISL). If you are familiar with ISL
encapsulation of Ethernet and Token Ring packets,
you may skip to Step 2 User’s Guide Software:
Windows®NT.
The ZX361-ISL Adapter is the first adapter to
incorporate both Ethernet and Token Ring
encapsulation in Inter-Switch Link (ISL) packets.
This is a Cisco Systems proprietary method of
allowing both Ethernet and Token Ring traffic to pass
over a single network link at high data rates. In the
past, this allowed Cisco Switches to be
interconnected with just one ISL link; now ZNYX
extends the ISL link down to the Network Server
itself.
Figure 2.1 shows that each ISL packet is an
encapsulation of either Token Ring or Ethernet
packets. Variable length Token Ring packets up to a
maximum of 196 kilobits are supported.
The ZX361-ISL Adapter contains an onboard
processor that verifies and appends checksums in
real-time — allowing the adapter to run at line-rate
without placing a load on the server’s CPU.
&21),*85$7,217(506
2.2
When configuring the ZX361-ISL Adapter, you will
work with Adapters, trunks, VNICs, and VLANs. See
Figure 2.2 on page 2-5 and Figure 2.3 on page 2-6
when reviewing the following descriptions.
$GDSWHU
2.2.1
In theory, up to (16) ZX361-ISL Adapters can be
installed in one server, but it is recommended to
install only a maximum of (4) due to the limitations
of the operating system, available slots, and CPU
processing power. Each adapter has one port. You
must bind (connect) every port to a trunk.

2.2.2
The purpose of a trunk, in this instance, is to allow
multiple VLANs to be addressed by single or
multiple ZX361-ISL Adapters. Trunks also allow
multiple adapters to be addressed by a single VLAN.
When configuring an ISL adapter, you must bind its
port to at least one trunk (trunks are created in the
RAINlink-ISL Control Panel).
91,&
2.2.3
VNIC is a new ZYNX term meaning Virtual NIC.
VNICs are created to overcome a basic rule of
VLANs:
Because you have multiple VLANs on your network,
you cannot bind all of them directly to one NIC. This
VLAN rule is overcome by creating Virtual NICs in
software and then binding the VNICs to the VLANs
on a one-for-one basis. It’s simple: If you have three
VLANs that must access the server, you will have to
create three VNICs (see Figure 2.2 on page 2-5).
Figure 2.2 on page 2-5 shows a server with one
ZX361-ISL NIC (adapter) installed. There are three
VLANs in the network. To overcome the one-for-one
rule, you would open the RAINlink Control Panel (in
Windows NT) and create one trunk, plus three
RAINlink VNICs for that trunk. The VLANs would
then be bound on a one-for-one basis to their
respective VNICs. The VNICs would all bind to the
trunk, and the trunk to the ZX361-ISL Adapter’s port.

2.2.4
ZNYX’s RAINlink software supports multiple
ZX361-ISL Adapters installed in your server, as well
as Enterprise features such as Link Aggregation,
Load Balancing, and Fast Failover.
/LQN$JJUHJDWLRQ
2.2.5
Link aggregation (also known as trunking) combines
two or more links into one virtual channel. This
provides increased bandwidth (for example, 800
Mbps full-duplex when using four ZX361-ISL
Adapters) for greater server performance under heavy
client load. The RAINlink software included with the
ZX361-ISL Adapter uses Cisco Systems’ Fast
EtherChannel (FEC) technology and works with any
FEC-compliant Switch. When the Link Aggregation
option is selected in the RAINlink Control Panel, the
trunk will be configured for Link Aggregation, Load
Balancing, and Failover.
/RDG%DODQFLQJ
2.2.6
RAINlink constantly monitors the network traffic
load on all the ports of a multi-link Fast EtherChannel
trunk. It constantly adjusts the load on each link to
ensure an equal balance among all the links in that
Fast EtherChannel group. By definition, if one link in
a group fails, the load will be equally balanced
between the remaining operational links; hence Load
Balancing incorporates Failover.
)DLORYHU
2.2.7
Under RAINlink, an option is provided for Failover
only. In this configuration, one primary adapter is
active while another is on standby. If the active
network adapter fails, the standby adapter takes over.
When the primary adapter resumes service, the traffic
is switched back to the primary adapter and the
standby adapter becomes inactive.

NetBlaster ZX361-ISL User’s Guide Hardware: Installation
+2:,7:25.6 2-5
In Example 2, the setup used in Example 1 has been
expanded. A second ZX361-ISL Adapter is added to
the server, and it is configured as a second port under
Trunk 1. The option of Aggregation is selected in the
Control Panel. Now the traffic from VLANs 1005, 1,
and 2 will be Load Balanced between the two
adapters.
In addition, the server in Example 2 received two
more ZX361-ISL Adapters. These two adapters serve
two other corporate VLANs where traffic is light but
the administrator wanted Failover between the two
adapters. The VLANs 1003 and 3 both travel over
one adapter while the other adapter remains on
standby.
