Grounding

Polarization-
This product may be
equipped with a polarized alternating-current line
plug

This plug will fit into the power outlet only one way.

a safety feature. If you are unable to insert the
plug fully into the outlet, try reversing the plug. If the
plug should still fail
to
fit, contact your electrician
to
replace your obsolete outlet. Do not defeat the safety
purpose of the polarized plug.
Alternate
Warnings-This product
is
equipped with
a three-wire grounding-type plug, a plug having a
third (grounding) pin. This plug will only fit into a
grounding-type power outlet. This
is
a safety feature.
If you are unable to insert the plug into the outlet,
contact your electrician
to
replace your obsolete
outlet. Do not defeat the safety purpose of the
grounding-type plug.
16. Ventilation-Slots and openings in the cabinet
are provided for ventilation and
to
ensure reliable
operation of the product and to protect it from
overheating, and these openings must not be
blocked or covered. The openings should never be
blocked by placing the product on a bed, sofa, rug,
or other similar surface. This product should not be
placed
in
a built-in installation such as a bookcase
or rack unless proper ventilation

an
appliance coupler

used
as
the
disconnect device, the disconnect device shall remain

Stable Placement.
Do
not place the
Z'JOX system on
an
unstable cart,
stand, bracket
or
table. The ZVOX
system may fall, causing serious
injury
to
a child or adult and serious
damage to the product.
Do
not use
the ZVOX system
on
any unstable surface.
The
58400/58500
sound
bar
has
two
keyhole-
shaped
mounting
locations
on
the
back
panel.
These
mounting
sites
will
securely
hold
a
screwhead
that
is
no
larger
than
3/8"
(10mm)
in
diameter.
It
is
the
installer's
responsibility
to
confirm
each
mounting
site
used
to
support
the the
58400/
58500
has
an
adequate
weight-handling
margin
to
support
both
the
weight
of
the
58400/58500
and
extra
weight
that
may
inadvertently
be
applied
as
a
result
of
a
house-hold
accident.
Damage
that
may
occur
to
the
58400/58500
during
or
after
the
mounting
process
or
any
other
installation
activity
is
NOT
covered
under
the
terms

Simple Setup -Just Four Steps

to your TV.

remote.

Face Front Face Up Wall Mount
1. Speaker placement
You can place the SB400/SB500 on any flat, stable surface near your TV.
There are three general placement options, illustrated above:
Face
Front You can place the SB400/SB500 on a flat surface so it faces
forward. This placement is ideal for a shelf below, above or near
the television.
Face Up You can place the SB400/SB500 facing up-often in front of the
television. Check
to ensure the SB400/SB500 does not block the
television infrared remote sensor. There should be no shelf or
flat surface immediately above the SB400/SB500
in this
configuration.
Wall
Mount The SB400/SB500 has two sturdy keyhole-shaped hanger mounts
on the back panel.
You can hang the SB400/SB500 on two
screwheads that are securely installed in a wall or other vertical
surface.
• Consider the finish
of the surface that will support the SB400/SB500. It is the
SB400/SB500 owner's responsibility to insure the surface finish supporting
or contacting the SB400/SB500 is protected, should this be a concern.
The contact area on the SB400/SB500 is made of inert synthetic materials that
typically
do not react with furniture or wall finishes. But any wall or surface
finish can be altered by having any heavy object resting on it for a long peri
od
of time. Place an appropriate barrier between any surface and the 584001
58500 if you are concerned about the finish of the supporting surface.
• A safe, secure installation is the SB400/SB500 owner's responsibility.
• Use
an unswitched AC outlet to provide power to a SB400/SB500. With the
SB400/SB500's Auto Standby feature turned on, an SB400/SB500 will enter its
Standby state
on or before 30 minutes of inactivity. A SB400/SB500 uses less
than 0.5 watt
in Standby. Using a switched AC outlet to cut off AC power to a
SB400/SB500 system
is not recommended. It delays subsequent turn-on.
• Do not place any objects on
top of a SB400/SB500.
2. Connecting your TV to the SB400/SB500
All current lVs have an audio output. It is likely that one of the cables provided with the
SB400/SB500 can be used
to connect the lV audio output to an input on the SB400/SB500.
DO NOT disconnect any video program source connected to your lV (like a cable or satellite
set
top bo x, DVD /Biuray or similar).

Most
HDlVs have an optical digital audio output jack. Use the provided optical cable
to connect this lV output to the optical digital audio input on the SB400/SB500.

You
can
connect
a TV set's analog audio
output
to
the analog audio input on the the
SB400/SB500 (which is left and right RCA jacks). The analog audio
output
on your TV will
be a 1/8 inch stereo minijack
or
a pair
of
RCA jacks. The
two
illustrations below show the
appearance
of
these
two
audio
output
connections.
You
can
connect
a TV's left& right RCA

the yellow coaxial digital
audio input on the ZVOX back panel. Use a cable with
an
RCA plug at each end. The color
of
the plug is
not
important.
3.
Connect

power
supply
adapter
FIRST,

the DC plug

the
power
supply adapter
to
the
DC
IN
jack
on the back
of
the
SB400/SB500. THEN
connect
the AC plug
of
the
power
supply adapter
to
an unswitched AC

4a. Infrared Remote Control of the
SB400/SB500
Learning:
You can "teach" the SB400/SB500 to respond to your
current TV remote control for the following functions:
VOLUME, MUTE and POWER. This
is described in the
separate instruction sheet beginning "Teach Your SB400/
SB500..." After this "learning" process, you will not need
the SB400/SB500 remote control
to control Volume,
Mute and Power. Teaching the SB400/SB500
to respond
to your preferred remote does not affect the included
SB400/SB500 remote. The SB400/SB500 remote will
always provide its full range of adjustments.
Input Selection:
A brief press and release
of the INPUT button on the
SB400/SB500 remote control allows you
to select between
the three separate inputs on the SB400/SB500.

power command from the "learned" remote control or the SoundBase remote control.

Surround Settings
Mute
The MUTE button on the SB400/SB500 remote control
operates
in the normal manner. When MUTE is active,
the display will show a blinking -00- for 20 seconds.
Bass and Treble
The Bass control has a range of -4
to 4.
The Treble control has a range of -4 to 4.
Note: The bass output
of a SB400/SB500 system is affected
by its position within a room.
You may find it sounds best
with slightly more or less bass than the neutral setting.

• Surround One ("Sd 1 ") has low virtual surround effect and strong
vocals. Use this setting if vocal clarity
is important to you. C I

and moderate vocals. Most people prefer this setting for most
program material.

• Surround Three ("Sd 3") has strong virtual surround effect
and moderate vocals. Many people prefer this setting when
watching movies.

Output Leveling
Press this button
to prevent large changes in volume. When
engaged, it boosts quiet dialog and lowers the output
of loud
commercial breaks. It also reduces volume swings between
cable or satellite channels. This feature can be used along
with any
of the three Surround settings.
Accuvoice
Press this button
to increase the clarity of most voices.
Pressing Accuvoice overrides the current Surround setting.
A second press returns the SoundBase
to the last-used
Surround setting.

4b. End Panel Controls on the
SB400/SB500
On the viewer's right end of the speaker
are four buttons.
A) POWER button:
This button turns the 88400 / 88500 "ON" if
it is
in Standby. If this button pressed briefly
while the
88400 / 88500 is " ON ", it wi ll mute
and unmute the
88400 / 88500 . To turn off
the
88400 / 88500 , press and hold down this
button for about five seconds.
B) Volume Up/Down rocker button
Press the "+"side ofthe rocker button to
increase volume. Press the "- " side ofthe
rocker button
to decrease volume. Pressing
either side ofthis button will "unmute" the
speaker if it
is muted.
C) Input button:
A brief press and release of the INPUT
button on the
88400/88500 remote
control allows you to select between the
three separate inputs on the
88400 /88500.
5. Tonal Profile Setting
The 88400/88500 has an adjustment to allow
it to better match the acoustics ofthe of its room
position. There
are three profile settings.
Face Front..
.... .. PS16 -on a flat surface, facing front.
Face Up
.. ........ 00 PS17 -on a flat surface, facing up.
Wall mount 0000000 PS18 -on a vertical surface,
facing into the room.
The default setting for the
88400/88500 is Face Front.
If your 88400/SBSOO's position is Face
Up or

mount , you should select PS17 or PS18
from the
PS menu.

You bring up the PS menu by pressing down on two buttons on the end panel ofthe
88400 / 88500 : Power(<!.>) and Volume Up (+) . After about five to seven seconds you should
seePS start flashing. The first time you bring up the
PS menu, it should show " PS 0".

Once you see the PS display, release the buttons.Then press and release the Volume Up
button
to increase the PS number. Continue pressing and releasing the Volume Up button until
you reach the setting you want: PS16, PS17 or PS18.

6. SB400/SB500 Wall Mounting Information
Please refer to the last page of the "Adjustment Options" booklet for dimensioned
drawings of the SB500 and SB400.
The SB400/SB500 has
two keyhole mounting sites on its back panel. You can mount
the SB400/SB500 onto two screwheads using these mounting sites. The SB400/SB500
weighs 16 pounds. NOTE: It is the installer's responsibility to ensure the screws are
installed
into the wall or other surface securely and that the screwheads are the correct
size for the hanger mounts on the rear of the SB400/SB500. ZVOX Audio recommends
your mounting sites be able to support at least twice the weight of the SB400/SB500.

optical digital cable to
the TV’s optical digital

connection, you

soundbar’s volume set
to 12-15. If you don’t
hear sound or if you
did not use a digital
connection, press the
INPUT button on the
SB400/SB500 remote
control to select the
Bluetooth or analog input.
You can also select the
input using the INPUT
button on the SB400/
SB500 end panel.

Connect the other end
of the optical cable to
the soundbar’s optical
digital input jack.
Connect the DC plug
to the DC power input
of the SB400/SB500.
Then insert the AC
plug into an AC power
receptacle.

The
PS Menu
The SB400 and SB500 have adjustments
that could prove useful, depending on the
installation location and user preferences.
The adjustments are made through the PS
Menu feature
of
both soundbars.
For instance, yourTV set may not have a
provision
to
turn off
the
internal speakers
or
the
TV may display a distracting "TV
speakers off" message. Adjustments
to
the
PS menu
of
the soundbaralong with your
preferred remote control can allow your
remote control
to
adjust volume
on
the
soundbar without yourTV speaker playing
or
the distracting message.
These adjustments are made using the four
end
panel buttons on the soundbarwhile
watching the numeric display. The remote
control provided with the SB400
and
SB500
cannot make adjustments
to
the PS Menu.
Press both buttons for three
or
more
seconds to triggerthe
PS
number
adjustmentmode.
Adjusting the PS
Menu
To
make a selection from the PS menu listing,
press and hold
down
both the MUTEand
VOLUME UP front panel buttonsfor about
3 seconds. If this is the first time you
have used
the
PS menu, you will see the
characters "PS-0" start flashing. Immediately
release the
two
buttons when you see the
PS numberflashing. Then quickly press and
release the Volume Up button while "PS" is
still flashing. This will increase PS number
setting. Pressing Volume Down will decrease
the PS number setting,
down
to
"PS-0
".
Each time you press the Volume
Up
or
Volume Down button, you have an additional
six seconds
to
make an adjustment.
Once you arrive
at
your intended PS number,
just wait for the display
to
stop flashing the
PS number. When the flashing stops, the
adjustment is made.

Using
the
SB400/SB500 remote control emulation modes
PS
1 through
PS
6:
Most users teach the soundbar
to
respond
to
their preferred remote control using the
soundbar built-in "learning" function. Should
this approach not
work
with your preferred
remote control, there is
an
alternate method
that can allow your preferred remote
to
control the sound level heard from
the soundbar.
To
use this method, your preferred remote
control needs an Aux
or
Audio device button
in
addition
to
device buttons for the
lV
and
set
top
box. This method cannot be used
if
your preferred remote control has only
two
device buttons. (Set Top Box and
TV).
You
will
also need the User Manual for your specific
Cable or Satellite remote control, along
with the "device brand and code" list for
yourremote control. This list may be a
separate document from the remote
control User Manual.
Using the PS numbers 1 through 6, you set
the SB400/SB500
to
respond
to
the the
remote commands
of
a popular manufacturer
of
lV
or
audio systems.
In
most cases, you
need
to
choose a different brand than your
lV
. Choosing a brand that is different from
your
lV
eliminates
the
chance that the
lV's
internal speakers will start playing along with
the
soundbar. Sony is a good choice from the
PS menu for most
lVs.
Most cable
or
satellite
remote controls can
be
adjusted
to
control a
SB400/SB500 set
to
"Sony" in the PS menu.
Because most Sony
lVs
have an "internal
speakers off" option, you can even use the
"Sony" option
in
the PS menu with Sony
lVs.
If yourSony
lV
does not let you turn offthe
internal speakers, you will need
to
choose a
different brand from the PS menu numbers 1
through 6.
Once you have chosen a brand from the
soundbar's PS menu, you need
to
adjust
the setting on yourcable or satellite remote
so its Volume buttons adjust that same
brand
of
Aux
or
Audio device. There are
two
adjustments you may need
to
make on
the cable or satellite remote.
Cable/Sat remote adjustment
1:
The
volume buttons on a cable
or
satellite remote
are typically "locked" on
to
the
lV's
internal
speakers. Even if you press the "Cable"
button on your remote, thevolume buttons
will still send
out
volume commands for
your
TY,
not the cable box.
You
need
to
unlockthe Cable/Sat remote volume buttons
according
to
the cable
or
satellite remote
control's instructions. Once unlocked,
pressing Aux on the Cable/Sat remote
will then cause the volume buttons on the
Cable/Sat remote
to
control whatever brand
of
device
is
set on the Aux button.
