Warnings and Notes
These are how warnings and notes are shown in this User’s Guide.
Warnings tell you about things that could harm you or your EMS.
Note: Notes tell you other important information (for example, other things you may
need to configure or helpful tips) or recommendations.
Syntax Conventions
• The NetAtlas EPON Manager may be referred to as the “EMS” in this User’s
Guide.
• The OLT or ONU may be referred to as the “EPON device” or the “device” in this
User’s Guide.
• Product labels, screen names, field labels and field choices are all in bold font.
• A key stroke is denoted by square brackets and uppercase text, for example,
[ENTER] means the “enter” or “return” key on your keyboard.
• “Enter” means for you to type one or more characters and then press the
[ENTER] key. “Select” or “choose” means for you to use one of the predefined
choices.
• A right angle bracket ( > ) within a screen name denotes a mouse click. For
example, Maintenance > Log > Log Setting means you first click
Maintenance in the navigation panel, then the Log sub menu and finally the
Log Setting tab to get to that screen.
• Units of measurement may denote the “metric” value or the “scientific” value.
For example, “k” for kilo may denote “1000” or “1024”, “M” for mega may
denote “1000000” or “1048576” and so on.
• “e.g.,” is a shorthand for “for instance”, and “i.e.,” means “that is” or “in other
words”.

CHAPTER 1
Introducing the EMS
This chapter introduces the UNIX version of the EMS.
1.1 Element Management System (EMS)
Overview
An Element Management System (EMS) is part of a Network Management System
(NMS). A Network Management System (NMS) is used to manage a network and
the communication between network elements. A network element can be a
physical piece of equipment on the network, the components of a device on the
network, or parts of the network itself. An EMS is used to manage one or more
network elements of a specific type. This is illustrated in the following example.
Figure 1 Relationship Between NMS, EMS, and Network Elements
In this example, network administrators use the NMS (A) to monitor and manage
the whole network. They use the EMS (B) to manage and monitor the EPON
devices (C) in the network.
The NetAtlas EPON Manager Element Management System (“EMS”) retrieves
management information from devices using Simple Network Management
Protocol (SNMP, RFC 1901). The EMS integrates with HP OpenView Network Node

Manager (NNM) (this is the NMS as described in Figure 1 on page 19). See Section
1.1.1 on page 20 for a list of specific devices the EMS supports.
The EMS consists of the EMS Server and the EMS Remote Client. You must install
the EMS Server, and it provides everything you need to use the EMS. The EMS
Remote Client is optional. You can install this on other computers if you want to
use the EMS on them as well.
The relationship between the EMS Server and the EMS Remote Client is illustrated
below.
Figure 2 Relationship Between EMS Server and Remote Client
The EMS Server runs on server B, and it uses HP OpenView NNM to communicate
with the EPON devices (C). The EMS Remote Client, if installed, runs on
computer(s) Aand also uses HP OpenView NNM to communicate with the EPON
devices (C).
1.1.1 Device Firmware Versions Supported
The EMS supports the following device and device firmware version:
• OLT-1308S-22 3.80(BHJ.0)C0
