ZyXEL Limited Warranty
ZyXEL warrants to the original end user (purchaser) that this product is free from any defects in materials or
workmanship for a period of up to two years from the date of purchase. During the warranty period, and upon
proof of purchase, should the product have indications of failure due to faulty workmanship and/or materials,
ZyXEL will, at its discretion, repair or replace the defective products or components without charge for either
parts or labor, and to whatever extent it shall deem necessary to restore the product or components to proper
operating condition. Any replacement will consist of a new or re-manufactured functionally equivalent product of
equal value, and will be solely at the discretion of ZyXEL. This warranty shall not apply if the product is
modified, misused, tampered with, damaged by an act of God, or subjected to abnormal working conditions.
Note
Repair or replacement, as provided under this warranty, is the exclusive remedy of the purchaser. This warranty is
in lieu of all other warranties, express or implied, including any implied warranty of merchantability or fitness for
a particular use or purpose. ZyXEL shall in no event be held liable for indirect or consequential damages of any
kind of character to the purchaser.
To obtain the services of this warranty, contact ZyXEL's Service Center for your Return Material Authorization
number (RMA). Products must be returned postage prepaid. It is recommended that the unit be insured when
shipped.
Any returned products without proof of purchase or those with an out-dated warranty will be repaired or replaced
(at the discretion of ZyXEL) and the customer will be billed for parts and labor. All repaired or replaced products
will be shipped by ZyXEL to the corresponding return address, postage paid. This warranty gives you specific
legal rights, and you may also have other rights that vary from country to country.

Preface
Congratulations on your purchase of the NetAtlas AAM1008 Element Management System (EMS).
This preface introduces you to the NetAtlas AAM1008 Element Management System (EMS) and discusses the
organization and conventions of this user’s guide. It also provides information on other related documentation.
About the NetAtlas AAM1008 Element Management System (EMS)
NetAtlas consists of an SNMP-based management platform and Element Management Systems (EMS). The EMS
has a customized GUI with specific applications for managing the AAM1008 module.
The EMS retrieves management information from the AAM1008 using the SNMP protocol.
General Syntax Conventions
• “Enter” means for you to type one or more characters and press the carriage return. “Select” or
“Choose” means for you to select one from the predefined choices.
• For brevity’s sake, we will use “e.g.” as shorthand for “for instance”, and “i.e.” as shorthand for “that
is” or “in other words” throughout this manual.
• The “,” notation indicates the sequence in which menus should be selected; for example “click
Window, Tile” means you first click the Windows menu and then Tile.

Getting to Know the NetAtlas AAM1008
EMS
This chapter describes the key features, benefits and applications of your NetAtlas AAM1008 EMS.
1.1 Introduction
NetAtlas is a centralized GUI-based Network Management System (NMS) designed to manage ZyXEL systems
such as the IES-1000. NetAtlas consists of an SNMP-based management platform (CastleRock SNMPc) and
Element Management Systems (EMS).
Figure 1-1 shows an overview of a network using NetAtlas. NetAtlas can manage ZyXEL systems locally via the
LAN or can also be located in the network operation center of the service provider and manage ZyXEL systems
remotely via Internet.
NetAtlas AAM1008 EMS is for managing the IES-1000’s AAM1008 module. Features supported include a real-
time device panel display, system hardware monitoring, firmware upload, configuration file backup/restore,
subscriber management, port/system performance monitoring, system information, network configuration, remote
access via Telnet and online HTML help.

1.2 Features
Real-Time Panel Display
NetAtlas shows the current status of the device, including LEDs and DSL ports using a real-time panel display.
The administrator can observe the real-time status of each device through the Internet.
System Maintenance
You may use the EMS to backup/restore configuration files, upgrade firmware and save/reboot a configuration.
System/Network Status And Performance Monitoring
System and network information such as IP, ICMP, SNMP, bridge and ADSL statistics can be displayed in tabular
or graphical (bar chart, pie chart or line graph) format enabling not just fast, accurate statistics (detect system
errors), but also trend analysis (analyze system errors and network congestion patterns). This information is
automatically refreshed every 10 seconds by default.
User Port Status And Performance Monitoring
The system administrator can query management information pertaining to a specific port. The EMS displays the
interface information in tabular or graphical (bar chart, pie chart or line graph) format enabling system
administrators to easily manage each subscriber link.
Versatile Reporting Capabilities
With NetAtlas, service providers can produce a variety of reports. Historical data can be saved in plain text format
or specific database format for later studies. System administrators can view this data in different formats (HTML,
graphical or database).
Security Control
Only authorized persons are allowed to perform network management. Administrators require passwords to
manage resources.
Subscriber Management
The system administrator can add, query and delete subscriber profiles stored in a file in Microsoft Access format.
Network Size
NetAtlas can manage up to 10,000 IP addresses, easily handling most large networks.

Network-wide Visibility
NetAtlas displays network devices according to your network topology using real-time auto-discovery. When new
devices are added to the system, NetAtlas detects the change in network topology automatically.
Embedded User-Friendly Functions
The friendly function-rich NetAtlas is designed with simplicity and ease-of-use in mind allowing easy firmware
upgrades, configuration file backup/restoration and performance statistics collection and report generation.
Trend Analysis
Mounds of historical data are useless if it cannot be organized into a systematic format. NetAtlas can display
network information (such as IP, ICMP, SNMP and bridge statistics) in graphical format, enabling not just fast,
accurate statistics, but trend analysis in order to better analyze system errors and network congestion patterns.
Performance monitoring statistics can measure network and system throughput and error rate.
Reduced System Downtime
NetAtlas’s real-time panel display and alarm reports detect faults and reports them immediately.
Event Report Generation
The system administrator can specify what events should generate reports; for example, when the system
temperature is too high, the system will generate a trap. When NetAtlas receives this trap, it can report it
immediately, allowing timely corrective action.

Introducing the SNMPc Network Manager
This chapter gives a brief overview of the SNMPc Network Manager.
2.1 Starting the SNMPc Network Manager
You must have SNMPc properly installed before you can use the EMS; please refer to the Castle Rock web site at
www.castlerock.com or see your SNMPc user's guide.
You may start the SNMPc Network Manager manually or automatically each time you turn on your computer.
2.1.1 Manual Startup
Click Start, Programs, SNMPc, Startup System to manually start the SNMPc network manager. This is the
default location of the SNMPc network manager.
2.1.2 Automatic Startup
To automatically start the SNMPc network manager each time you turn on your computer:
In SNMPc main window, click Config, System Startup.
Select the Auto Startup check box and click Done.
