Greetings and congratu ations on your purchase of the 3DHS 44 inch S ick
580!
The 44" S ick 580 is the first of a new generation of S icks from 3D
HobbyShop. Our S icks have become famous for their combination of wi d
gyroscopic rotation, straight- ine precision, gent e 3D, and wide speed
enve ope. The S icks are tru y do-it-a aerobatic aircraft. The 580 series
improves on that with superior predictabi ity, ower coup ing, and u tra-high
maneuverabi ity at a speeds. Carbon-reinforcement and top-qua ity wood
produce a strong airframe that can take incredib e punishment, giving you the
confidence to push the S ick 580 to the imit. Our new, proprietary covering
system gives you the durabi ity of genuine U tracote with a super-detai ed
CNC-app ied scheme. Nothing at the fie d ooks ike the new S ick. We add
quick assemb y and a comp ete hardware package to make this the most
exciting new aerobatic parkf yer in the wor d!
2
Tips for Success:
1. Before starting assemb y, take a few minutes to read the entire instruction
manua to fami iarize yourse f with the assemb y process.
2. P ease take a few minutes and go over a the seams on the aircraft with a
covering iron on a medium heat setting. Due to the printed co or scheme using
an iron sock is mandatory to prevent scratching the surface of the covering.
3. Use a fresh bott e of thin CA with a fine g ue tip when attaching the CA
hinges. This wi ensure that the proper amount of CA wicks into the hinge
and surrounding ba sa wood and creates a proper bond between the wood and
hinges.
4. App y a coup e drops of CA to high stress areas such as anti-rotation pins,
anding gear mounts, servo trays and motor box joints .
5. Take the time to proper y ba ance and trim your aircraft and set up rates
and exponentia va ues. Your f ying experience wi be great y enhanced by
doing this.

Let's begin!
4
1. Locate the 2 wing pane s with ai erons as we as the 2 G10 ai eron contro
horns. Remove the ai erons from the wing and remove the covering over the
s ot for the ai eron horn on the bottom of the ai eron with a sharp hobby
b ade. Make sure you are doing this on the bottom of the ai eron!
2. Scuff the portion of the contro horn that wi be g ued into the ai eron with
sandpaper. Use a g ue tip on your bott e of medium CA and app y g ue to the
s ot as we as to both sides of the contro horn. Insert the contro horn into
the s ot and make sure it seats proper y against the surface of the ai eron.
5
3. Remove the covering from the ai eron servo ocation and insta the servo
using the manufacturer supp ied mounting hardware with the output sp ine
toward the eading edge of the wing.
4. S ide the ai eron into position on the hinges and secure with severa drops
of fresh thin CA. This process is much easier and more effective if a fine g ue
tip is used. Make sure to def ect the surface as pictured whi e app ying the
CA.
6
5. Locate the 2 threaded pushrods that are the same ength and 4 micro ba
inks a ong with 4 2mm bo ts, nuts and washers. Thread the ba inks onto
each end of the pushrods and secure to the servo arm and contro horn with
the 2 mm hardware as shown in the picture. Use the ongest arm provided
with your servo.
6. Repeat this process for the other wing ha f.
7. Locate the carbon fiber main anding gear, 2 ax es, 2 washers, 2 ocking
nuts, 2 whee s, 2 whee co ars and the 2 whee pants from the hardware
package. P ace the threaded portion of the ax e through the ho e in the
carbon gear, s ide a washer over the threaded portion and screw the ock nut
onto the ax e, but do not tighten comp ete y. P ace the whee onto the ax e and
secure with a whee co ar. There is a s ot pre-cut in the whee pant to a ow
it to fit over the ax e. S ide the whee pant into position over the ax e and
tighten the nut on the ax e, taking care to make sure the whee pant is
positioned proper y. Repeat this process for the remaining whee and whee
pant. Again this is probab y better exp ained in the fo owing series of
pictures.
7
8. Locate the fuse age, 2-3mm socket head cap bo ts and 2 washers. Secure
the anding gear to the fuse age by inserting a 3mm screw into a washer,
through the carbon fiber gear and into the pre-insta ed b ind nut in the
fuse age. Make sure to use a drop of b ue Loctite on each screw to prevent
them from backing out.
8
9. Insta the anding gear cover using Goop si icone g ue or thick CA.
10. Locate the horizonta stabi izer/e evator assemb y and s ide the e evator
off of the hinges. Turn the e evator over so that the counter ba ances face the
rear of the aircraft and insert the e evator into the s ot in the rear of the
fuse age. Rotate the e evator into proper position and then s ide the
horizonta stabi izer into position.
11. Insert the carbon fiber wing tube into the s eeve in the fuse age. Use a
ru er to insure that the stabi izer is centered in its s ot and compare the
stabi izer to the wing tube to make sure it is proper y a igned. Sand or shim
the s ot if necessary to ensure proper a ignment. Secure the stabi izer with
CA. S ide the e evator onto the hinges and secure with thin CA.
9
12. Remove the covering over the s ot on the bottom of the e evator where the
e evator contro horn wi be insta ed. Scuff the portion of the contro horn
that wi insert into the e evator with sandpaper. Secure the contro horn with
medium CA.
13. Attach your servo extension to the e evator servo and insta the e evator
servo with the output sp ine toward the rear of the mode . Assemb e the
inkage and insta as per the picture.
10
14. Use your Xacto knife to open a s ot in the bottom of the rudder to accept
the tai whee wire. Make sure the portion of wire that wi reside in the
a uminum mounting bracket is f ush with the rudder beve . Secure the wire
with CA. A piece of strapping tape p aced over the s ot wi add strength and
durabi ity to this area.
15. S ide the meta bracket into position and then p ace the tai whee onto the
wire and secure with a whee co ar.
11
16. Open the s ot in the bottom of the rudder to accept the rudder contro
horn. Carefu y center the rudder contro horn into position and secure with
CA.
17. S ide the rudder onto the vertica stabi izer and secure the hinges with
thin CA. Insta the entire assemb y onto the fuse age taking care to achieve
proper a ignment. Secure with CA.
18. Secure the tai whee bracket to the bottom rear of the fuse age with 2 of
the provided wood screws.
12
19. Insta the rudder servo in the provided ocation under the canopy.
Assemb e the inkages for the pu -pu assemb y and insta as shown in the
pictures, using the EZ connectors on the servo end to adjust the cab es.
20. Insta your choice of motor using the provided 3mm bo ts. We high y
recommend the Torque 2818/900 and Airboss 45 Amp ESC. Mount the ESC
on the bottom of the motorbox with Ve cro.
13
21. S ide the cow into position and use your spinner to assure proper
a ignment. When satisfied dri 4 ho es with a 1/16" dri bit through the cow
and into the mounting tabs. Secure the cow with 4 of the provided wood
screws.
23. P ace a strip of Ve cro onto the battery tray and onto your battery and use
a Ve cro strap around the battery and tray to prevent the battery from being
ejected during high G maneuvers. Insta your receiver and p ug in a of your
servo eads and the ead from the ESC. Power up the system (with the
prope er removed) and make sure a contro s are functioning proper y and
the motor is turning in the proper direction.
24. Insert the carbon fiber wing tube into the s eeve in the fuse age and s ide
the wings onto the tube. Secure with the provided a uminum wing bo ts
inserted through the fuse age sides and into the b ind nut in the wing root.
14
25. If using the inc uded Side Force Generators now is the time to mount
them. Each SFG mounts using 2 wood screws.
Set-up and f ying tips
The CG for the S ick 580 is on the wing tube. There is p enty of room on the
battery tray to move your battery to achieve this CG ocation. Depending on
your f ying sty e you can adjust the position of the battery to a ter the CG to
accommodate your preferences. For this type of aircraft where I am going to
predominant y f y aggressive 3D I typica y set the airp ane up with a neutra
CG, meaning that when the aircraft is f own inverted straight and eve it
requires no down e evator to maintain a titude. If your f ying sty e eans more
toward precision aerobatics then I recommend setting your CG using the 45
degree ine test. F y the aircraft from eft to right or right to eft, whichever
direction you are more comfortab e with at 3/4 to fu thrott e. Pu the
aircraft to a 45 degree up ine and estab ish this ine and immediate y ro the
aircraft inverted. Estab ish this ine and et go of the e evator stick. Idea y
the aircraft wi continue to track on that 45 degree ine for severa hundred
feet before s ow y starting to eve off. Adjust the position of your battery to
achieve this f ight condition. Once satisfied with the ocation of your CG
scribe a mark on the battery tray so that you can position the battery in the
same ocation each f ight and achieve the same fee and f ight characteristics
each f ight.
I a so high y recommend taking the time to proper y set up your rates and
exponentia settings. Setting up ow rates for precision maneuvers and high
15
rates for aggressive aerobatics and 3D f ight wi a ow you to experience the
best attributes of the S ick 580 or any aircraft for that matter
Here are some suggested rates to get started with. These are the rates and
exponentia va ues I fee comfortab e with. They may fee awkward to you
and if so p ease adjust to your taste.
E evator: Low rate-8-10 degrees; 15-20% Exponentia
3D rate-45-50 degrees; 40-50% Exponentia
Rudder: Low rate-20 degrees; 45-50% Exponentia
3D rate- As much as possib e; 60-70% Exponentia
Ai eron: Low rate-15-20%; 40-45% Exponentia
3D rate- As much as possib e; 50-60% Exponentia
Thanks so much for your business! See you at the f ying fie d!
