ABB THF Series Owner's manual

Installation and Operation Instruction for THF Filter and
Protective Unit THF 1_
THF 1BS_
General guidelines
Due to the fact that most UK building earth circuits are TN-S-systems, special care should be
taken when installing a THF system in this country.
As with all other THF installations, the device should be fitted in the Neutral conductor, however
the following guidelines should be followed:
2247 0191/ 1SCC330001M5803 34 THF 1S1 C
THF
• THF should be installed in the Neutral
conductor at the Transformer Star
Point.
• In N- conductor in transformer star
point: Care should be taken to ensure
that no earth/neutral bond exists on the
supply (transformer) side of the filter.
This may result in a bypass situation
causing excessive current to flow via
the system earth.
• In case of installation in N-conductor
of TN-S- system: Prior to installation of
THF, resistance measurements must
be carried out between the downstream
(building) earth & neutral to ensure that
no erroneous earth/neutral connection
exists other than that intended
to achieve a TN-S-system. Such
accidental connection could cause
excessive current to flow in the system
earth.
• This Installation and setting instructions
for the THF-1S protection unit and
brochure THF 1 GB and 2 GB should
be followed.

Installation and operation instruction for THF filter and
protective unit THF 1_
The function of Protective unit (THF1_)
The protective unit shall always be used when the THF is installed in the star point on TN-C- and
TN-S-circuits. It can also be used in TN-S-system, when THF is installed in N-conductor.
The purpose of the protection unit is:
• to prevent harmful effects of 150/180Hz
fault current by measuring the current.
• to protect the network against high
50/ 60Hz voltage drop.
• to protect THF against overload.
The function of the protection unit
The protection unit controls the by-pass-contactor
( K1) in case the 50/60Hz or 150/180Hz current
exceeds the set level.
The factory settings:
• 150/180 Hz current: 7% of the rated primary current of current transformer ( T1).
This current can cause overheating in case of fault in the TN-S-system.
• Time settings 0,5 sec.
• 50/60Hz current exceeds 50% of the rated primary current of current
transformer (T1). This current is a cause of increased unbalance voltage.

Installation to TN-C-System - THF in the transformer star point
The installation shall be done following the local
wiring rules suggesting to work all power off.
Prior to installation of THF in the transformer star-
point between point A and B following measures
must be taken.
1. Measure the fundamental 50/60Hz current in
the star point connector conductor. Load balancing
is recommended, if the unbalance current exceeds
15% of the rated primary current of the CT.
2. Open both the HV-main switch and the LV-main
This may result in a by-pass situation causing exces-
sive current to flow via the system earth, heating of
the cables and inactivating the THF.
4. Measure the isolation resistance between point A
and B to ensure that the resistance between point A
and B is high. Re needs to be over 50 kΩ.
Any earthing conductor with lower resistance by-
passing the THF between the star point and B might
be subject to high third harmonic current, which can
cause heating of the cables.
5. Make the earthing in point B.
The installation of THF
6. Before the installation turn the by-pass switch of
THF-unit ON.
7. Connect the OUTPUT-terminal to the load
side(B).
8. Connect the INPUT-terminal to the line side (A).
9. The PEN-wire shall be earthed after the OUTPUT-
terminal only. No earthing is allowed between the
transformer star point (N-terminal) and the INPUT-
terminal.
10. After the installation turn the by-pass-switch in
OFF-position.
11. Check that the THF connection is right by measu-
ring the current with THF ON and OFF.
In proper installation the filtering effect should be
around 90 % and the 150/180 Hz voltage across THF
should be 10...45V.

The installation shall be done following the local
wiring rules suggesting to work all power off. Prior
to installation of THF on N –conductor between
point A and B following measures must be taken.

Phase balancing is recommended,if the unbalance current
exceeds 15% of the rated primary current of the CT.
2. Open the LV-main switch.
3. Check that there is no earting bond on the load side between
N-conductor after the point B and the earthing system.
4. Measure the isolation resistance between point A and B or to
ensure that the resistance between point A and B is high. Re
needs to be over 50 kΩ.
5. Resistance measurements must be carried out between the
downstream (building) earth & neutral to ensure that no
erroneous earth/neutral connection exists other than that intended
to achieve a TN-S-system. Such accidental connection could cause
excessive current to flow in the system earth and heating of the
cables.
The installation of THF in the N-conductor
6. Before the installation turn the by-pass switch of THF-unit ON.
7. Connect the OUTPUT-terminal to the load side (B).
8. Connect the INPUT-terminal to the line side (A).
9. The N-conductor of TN-S-system shall be earthed on the line
side of THF only. No earthing is allowed between N-terminal
and earthing system on the load side of THF (OUTPUT-terminal).
10. After the installation turn the by-pass-switch in OFF-position.
11. Check that the THF connection is right by measuring the
current with THF ON and OFF. In proper installation the filtering
effect should be around 90% and the 150/180 Hz voltage
across THF should be 10...45V.

following measures must be taken.
Installation to TN-C-S
- THF in N-conductor of the TN-S- part
The installation shall be done following the local wiring rules suggesting to work
all power off. Prior to installation of THF on N –conductor between point A
and B following measures must be taken.
Prior to installation of THF in
N-conductor of one of the TN-S-
parts, resistance measurements
must be carried out between the
downstream (building) earth &
neutral to ensure that no erroneous
earth/neutral connection exists
other than that intended to achieve
a TN-S-system. Such accidental
connection could cause excessive
current to flow in the system earth
and overheating of cables.
The procedure is the same as in
the TN-S-system described in this
instruction.

Before the connection to the network
1. Check that the connection have been made properly.
2. Check that no foreign parts are left during installation
in the units.
3. Ensure the following values are set in the protective
unit (see table).
4. Ensure the by-pass-switch is in OFF position.
5. Switch ON the control voltage in the protective unit.
6. Carry out a TEST-procedure (see table in page 9).
If the indicator lights are according to the table in page 9, the protection unit is
working correctly and the THF-filter can be switched on the network.
Current transformer KORE06F1600/1THF
Relay settings as factory settings in the above table:
- K4 relay setting 5 gives 50/60 Hz max. current: 300A
- K5 relay setting 1 gives 150/180 Hz max. current: 50A
The reaction time 0,5...0,7 sec.
After the connection to the network
Check that when the load is running the ‘’OK’’- light is ON.
Otherwise see the checklist in page 9.

After the connection to the network
Amp-meter is connected in the secondary circuit of the T1 Current transformer. It is equip-
ped with %-scale where 100% indication corresponds the nominal primary current of T1
Current transformer. When the THF-filter is connected the meter indicates mainly the
50/60Hz unbalance current which flows in the N/PEN- wire. When the THF-filter is bypassed
the meter indicates mainly the 3rd harmonic current.
2. The indicator light functions
3. Resetting of a protective unit
4. The indicator light functions in Test-actions
1. Find out the reason why a protective unit has been activated and correct the fault.
- The reason for an unbalance current may be a blown fuse in main circuit.
2. Check by ‘Test’-action that a protective unit is working properly.
3. Push ‘Reset’ -button.
- If the protective unit is activated again the reason has not been sorted out.
Note!
Check that when the load is running the ‘’OK’’- light is ON.
Otherwise see the checklist in page 9.
