ThankyouforpurchasingtheAB-PX5/AX5/TX5astheheartofyourcomputer’ssystem.
Wehopethisinstructionbookletwill enableyoutoinstall PX5/AX5/TX5inyoursystem
safelyandwithoutanyerrors.Althoughyoumaybefamiliarwithsomeoftheconceptswe
will explain,pleasereadoverthemagaintoavoidanyproblems.
1.ThemotherboardinmostPCsusemanyconnectingcablestoconnectperipheralsto
themainunit.Theimportantthingtorememberisthatthesecablesall havea
‘direction’.Laterinthechapter,wewill talkmoreaboutthedefinitionofconnecting
cablesandthemethodofinstallation.Pleasepayspecialattentiontoourprompts.
BecauseweareusingtheexclusiveABITSOFTMENUtechnologytomodifythe
motherboard,thejumperisnotrequiredanymore.Wealsousesimpleandeasyto
understandsoftwaredesigntocompletethistask.Becauseofthis,youcaninstall
themotherboarddirectlyintothesystem.However,westill suggestyoufirstcarry
outasimpletestbeforeyouinstall themotherboardinsidethecomputer.
2.Inthisbooklet,wewill writeoutinfull anynewtechnicalwordsweencounterfor
thefirsttimeandusetheircontractionsthereafter.
3.If,whenyouareinstallingtheCPUproblemsoccurandthereisnowaytosolve
them,wesuggestyoufirstcleartheCMOSinformation(refertoChapter2).Ifyou
still haveproblems,contactus.
4.Howtoperformasimplebasictest?It’ssimple.Place themotherboardonaflat
insulatedsurface (likethepackagingthemotherboardcamein).Plug theCPUinto

theZIFsocket(ifyouareinstallingafan,install itontop).Plug DRAMmodulein
andthenplug thekeyboardin.Plug intheelectricalcord(ensureelectricalsupplyis
turnedoff whendoingthis)andpayattentiontopolarity(refertoChapter2).Plug
inthedisplaycardandplug the15 PinD-Submonitorsignalconnectorintothe
displaycard.Makesuretheconnectionsarecorrectandsecureandthenturnonthe
powersource forthemonitorandthenthemainpowersupply.Ifapictureappears
onthemonitor,congratulations,thebasictesthasbeensuccessful.Finally,good
luckwiththecompleteinstallation.

Maybeyou’veheardofCMOSDATAquiteabitbuthaveneverseenit.Whatexactlyis
CMOS?Isitimportant?Well,ifitwasn’timportant,youwouldneverhadheardofit.
CMOSbasicallystoresorsavestheparametersyouassigntheBIOS(BasicInput
OutputSystem)withinmemory.ThismemoryorSRAMcanbebothreadfromand
writtentobutitneedsbatterypowertoavoidlosingthisinformationwhenthecomputer
isturnedoff.Whenthebatteriesgoflatoryouneedtoswapbatteries,youmaynot
remembertheparametersyouset.Toavoidthis,werecommendyourecordthese
parametersorstickthemtoyourharddriveforeasyreference.

AX5/PX5/TX5Features
TheAX5/PX5/TX5havebeenespeciallydesignedforFileserver,
WorkstationandProfessionalusers.Itcansupportawiderangeof
processors,includingall IntelCPUs(P54C)andIntelCPUswithMMX(P55C),
aswell asall AMD-K5/K6andCyrix6x86/6x86L/6x86MXCPUs.Italsotakes
intoaccount,asmuchaspossible,all futureCPUs.
TheAX5/PX5/TX5usesSOFTMENU™technology,whichmeansthat
all theparameterscanbeconfiguredwithoutusingDIPswitchesorjumpers.
Theconfigurationisentirelyachievedthrougha“SoftSwitch”thatallowsthe
usertosetCPUspeedandoperatingvoltagewithease.
TheAX5/PX5/TX5usesIntel430TXserieschipsets,andhas512KLevel-
2PipelineBurstSRAMonboard.
168-pinDIMM (DualIn-LineMemoryModule)slotsand72-pinSIMM
(SingleIn-LineMemoryModule)slotsmeettherequirementsforall memory
configurationsrequiredbyhighlevelcomputing.The168-pinDIMM slots
supporttraditionalFastPageandEDO (ExtendedDataOut)DRAMasa
memorystandardfornextgeneration64-bitsystems.The168-pinDIMM slots
havebeenreservedtomeetrequirementsforbothpresentandfutureupgrades.
TheAX5/PX5/TX5alsoprovidestwoUniversalSerialBus(USB)ports
andmeetstheConcurrentPCI(PeripheralComponentInterconnect)Rev.2.1
standard.ItalsosupportsIDEinterface forFastHDD (Mode0~4)and

TheEISCA(EnhancedIntelligentSystemCoolerArchitecture)
isaspeciallydesigned12-pininterface whichintegratesthe
MainboardandtheCPUcoolingsystem.Thissystemisatotal
solutionforPCsystemheatsinkproblems.
DuetoincreasingCPUspeed,whichcauseshigher
temperatures,findingwaystoeffectivelydealwithCPU
temperaturesisbecomingamoreandmorecrucialproblem.
EffectivelyandpreciselydeterminingCPUtemperaturewasa
veryimportantrequirement.Thearea directlyundertheCPU
socketisthelocationonthemainboard.closesttotheCPU,
andheatisconductedawayfromthisarea throughair
circulation.Determiningtemperaturechangeunder
thesecircumstancesisveryimprecise,asitonlyallowsusto
detectlargechangesintemperature.Inaddition,becausethe
airundertheCPUsocketisconfinedtothisarea,thesensor
cannotdetecttemperatureinrealtime.Testshaveproventhat
undersuchcircumstances,evenafter5minutesthesensor
locatedundertheCPUsocketisunabletodetectreal
temperaturechange,soitcannotmeettherequirementsfor
thermalproblems.
InEISCAarchitecture,thethermalsensorislocatedatthe
heat-sink.Inthisway,thesensorisabletodetectCPU
temperatureinrealtimeandmoreprecisely.TheEISCA
monitorsvoltage,fanspeedandfanon/off controltomeetthe
importantspecifications.

ThisAX5/PX5/TX5mainboardnotonlyprovidesall standardequipmentfor
classicpersonalcomputers,butalsoprovidesgreatflexibilityformeetingfuture
upgradedemands.Thischapterwill introduce stepbystepall thestandard
equipmentandwill alsopresent,ascompletelyaspossiblefutureupgrade
capabilities.Thismainboardisabletosupportall IntelPentiumincluding
P55CwithMMX,Cyrix6x86,6x86L,6x86MXandAMD-K5/K6processors
nowonthemarket.(Fordetails,see specificationsinChapter1.)
However,wecannotguarantee thatthedescriptiongiveninthismanualonthe
circuitryofyourmainboardwill workforprocessorsnotlistedinChapter1.
Forexample,theoperatingvoltageofCyrix’snextgenerationCPUsisunknown
atthepresenttime.Thuswewerenotabletoincludethesespecificationsin
yourmotherboard.Wewill supplyfurtherinformationaboutCPUsupport
whennewCPUsarriveonthemarket.

Before proceedingwiththeinstallation
Beforeinstallingthemainboardpleasebesuretoturnoff ordisconnectthe
powersupplyunit.Beforemakinganymodificationstothehardware
configurationofthemainboard,thepowersupplytoanyareasofthemainboard
youplantomodifyshouldbeturnedoff toavoidunnecessarydamagetothe
hardware.

bythemselves.Wehaveattemptedtowritethisdocumentinaveryclear,
conciseanddescriptivemannertohelpovercomeanyobstaclesyoumayface
duringinstallation.Pleasereadourinstructionscarefullyandfollowthem
carefullystep-by-step.

InstallingtheMainboardtotheCasing
Mostcomputercaseswill haveabaseonwhichtherewill bemanymounting
holesthatallowsthemainboardtobesecurelyattachedandatthesametime,
preventsshortcircuits.
Therearetwowaystoattachthemainboardtothebase.
lwithspacers
lorwithbolts
Inprinciple,thebestwaytoattachthemotherboardiswithbolts,andonlyif
youareunabletodothisshouldyouattachtheboardwithspacers.Takea
carefullookatthemainboardandyouwill see manymountingholesonit.Line
theseholesup withthemountingholesonthebase.Iftheholeslineup,and
therearescrewholesthismeansyoucanattachthemainboardwithbolts.Ifthe
holeslineup andthereareonlyslots,thismeansyoucanonlyattachthe
mainboardwithspacers.Takethetipofthespacersandinsertitintotheslots.
Afterdoingthistoall theslots,youcanslidethemainboardintopositionaligned
withtheslots.Afterthemainboardhasbeenpositioned,checktomakesure
everythingisOKbeforeputtingthecasingbackon.
Note:Ifthemainboardhasmountingholes,butdon’tlineup withtheholes
onthebaseandtheirarenoslotstoattachthespacers,don’tpanic,youcanstill
attachthespacerstothemountingholes.Justcutthespacers(alongthedotted
line)(thespacermaybealittlehardsobecarefulofourhands).Inthiswayyou
canstill attachthemainboardtothebasewithoutworryingaboutshortcircuits.
Why isitthatCyrixisalwaysraisedinrelation toIBMinbooks?In
fact,thesetwo6*86 CPUs(limitedtothe6*86 series)arebasically
thesamething.BecauseCyrixdoesnothaveitsownproduction line,
ithascontractedIBMtomanufacturetheir6*86 CPUsforthem.
However,IBMhasstipulatedthattheCyrixCPUstheyproduce
haveboththeCyrixand IBMmarkprintedon it.

Insidethecaseofanycomputerseveralcablesandplugshavetobe
connected.Thesecablesandplugsareusuallyconnectedone-by-oneto
connectorslocatedonthemainboard.Youneedtocarefullypayattentionto
anyconnectionorientationthecablesmayhaveand,ifany,notice thepositionof
thefirstpinoftheconnector.Intheexplanationsthatfollow,wewill
describethesignificance ofthefirstpin.
