Operating the Welch Allyn Otoscope
1. Turn on power. When the power
switch is on, the fan will power up and
light will be emied from the end of
the Otoscope p and through the light
vent.
2. Ensure that the Light
Control Knob is turned all
the way to the right for
maximum light output.
ONCE THE LAMP IS TURNED ON IT WILL TAKE AT LEAST 15 SECONDS TO FULLY LIGHT UP
WHEN YOU TURN ON THE LAMP LEAVE IT ON FOR AT LEAST 60 SECONDS BEFORE TURNING OFF
3. Perform a White Balance. A white balance (color reset) should be performed once a week, aer the lamp is
replaced or whenever the image color appears distorted. To obtain good clinical images the natural colors must
be represented in the image.
To perform a White Balance:
1. Aim the Otoscope p 1/2 to 1 inch away from a uniformly white sheet of paper.
2. While looking at the Otoscope light box, press the Color Reset buon. A green light will
ash in the window to the right of the color reset buon.
3. When it is done ashing, the white balance is complete. Release the Color Reset buon.

6. The white dot on the camera head should always
be oriented to the top of the ear; this ensures that
the image is correctly oriented on the AFHCAN Cart
monitor. Loosen the set screw on the coupler,
rotate the camera head, and then re-ghten the
set screw.
5. Hold the Otoscope as trained when imaging.
2. Twist a Welch Allyn speculum clockwise onto the
p of the Welch Allyn Otoscope unl it is ghtly
secured; see below.
3. Pre-focus the Otoscope by placing the focus tool on
the end of the Otoscope and turning the focusing
ring unl the image is clearly focused on the
AFHCAN Cart monitor. 7. When nished be sure to hang the hand piece in
the bracket as pictured here.
1. Use an alcohol swab to clean the p of the Welch
Allyn Otoscope, aach the insuaon blub to the
earscope, lt the p downward and squeeze the
insuaon bulb vigorously. Any excess alcohol and/
or debris will be forced from the Otoscope p.
Using the Otoscope
4. Press the Image Enhance buon to sharpen the
image aer focusing the Otoscope.

Troubleshooting
1. No light source? Check cords to ensure they are all secure; ensure light control knob is all the way to the right;
replace bulb if needed (contact IT for assistance).
2. Focusing issues? Use the Image Enhance feature, clean p of scope.
3. Color not accurate? Perform white balance, ensure light control knob is set appropriately.
