Installation
Attachments - Do not use attachments not recommended by
theunitmanufacturerastheymayresultintheriskoffire,electric
shockorinjurytopersons.
Water and Moisture - Do not use this unit near water - for
example,nearabathtub,washbowl,kitchensink,orlaundrytub,
inawetbasement,ornearaswimmingpool, and the like.
Heat-Donotusethisunitnearsourcesofheat,includingheating
vents, stoves, or other appliances that generate heat. It also
should not be placed in temperatures less than 5˚C (41˚F) or
greater than 35˚C (95˚F ).
Mounting surface - Place the unit on aflat, even surface.
Accessories- Do not place this unit on an unstable cart, stand,
tripod,bracket,ortable. Theunitmayfall,causingseriousinjury
toa child oranadult,andserious damage totheappliance.Use
onlywithacart,stand,tripod,bracket,ortablerecommendedby
the manufacturer , or sold with the unit. Any mounting of the
applianceshould follow the manufacturer ’sinstructions, and
should use a mounting accessory recommended by the
manufacturer .
Portable cart -An appliance and cart combination should be
moved with care. Quick stops, excessive force, and uneven
surfaces may cause the appliance and cart combination to
overturn.
Ventilation -The unitshould be situated with adequate space
arounditsothatproperheatventilationisassured. Allow10cm
clearancefrom the rearand the top of theunit, and 5cm from
theeachside.
Slotsand openings in the cabinetand the backor bottom are
providedforventilation, and to ensure reliable operation of the
unitandtoprotectitfromoverheating, theseopeningsmust not
beblockedorcovered. Theopeningsshouldneverbeblocked
byplacingtheunit on a bed, sofa,rugorother similar surface.

Electric Power
Power Sources - This unit should be operated only from the
typeofpowersource indicated on the marking label. If you are
notsure ofthetypeof powersupplytoyourhome,consultyour
appliance dealer or local power company . To operate unit on
batterypower ,orothersources,refertotheoperatinginstructions.
Groundingor Polarization-Thisunitisprovidedwithapolarized
alternating-currentlineplug(aplughavingonebladewiderthan
theother). Thisplug will fit intothepoweroutlet only one way .
Thisisasafetyfeature.Ifyouareunabletoinserttheplugfully
intotheoutlet,tryreversingtheplug. Iftheplugshouldstillfailto
fit,contactyourelectrician to replace yourobsoleteoutlet.Do
notdefeat the safety purpose ofthepolarizedplug.
Power-CordProtection-Thisunitisprovidedwithanattachment
plughaving overload protection. This is asafety feature. See
operatinginstructionsforreplacementorresettingofprotective
device.Ifreplacementoftheplugisrequired,besuretheservice
technician has used a replacement plug specified by the
manufacturer that has the same overload protection as the
originalplug.
Overloading -Donotallowanything to rest on the power cord.
Do not overload wall outlets and extension cords as this can
resultinfireorelectricshock.Donotlocatethisunitwherethe
cordwill beabusedbypersonswalking onit.
Outdoor Antenna
Powerlines -An outside antenna systemshouldnotbelocated
inthevicinityof overhead power lines orotherelectriclightor
powercircuits,orwhereitcanfallintosuchpowerlinesorcircuits.
Wheninstallinganoutsideantennasystem,extremecareshould
betakentokeepfromtouchingsuch power lines or circuits as
contactwith themmightbefatal.
OutdoorAntenna Grounding - If an outside antenna or cable
systemis connected to the unit,be sure theantenna or cable
systemis grounded so astoprovide some protection against
voltagesurges and built-up staticcharges. Section 810 ofthe
NationalElectricalCode, ANSI/NFPANo.70,providesinformation
with regard to proper grounding of the mast and supporting
structure,groundingofthelead-inwiretoanantennadischarge
unit,sizeofgroundingconductors,locationofantenna-discharge
unit,connection togroundingelectrodes,and requirementsfor
thegrounding electrode.Seethefigure.
Lightning
Foraddedprotectionforthisunitreceiverduringalightningstorm,
orwhenitisleftunattendedandunusedforlongperiodsoftime,
unplugitfromthewalloutletanddisconnecttheantennaorcable
system. Thiswillpreventdamagetotheunitduetolightningand
powerlinesurges.
Maintenance
Cleaning-Unplug this unitfromthewalloutletbefore cleaning.
Donotuseliquidcleanersoraerosolcleaners.Useadampcloth
forcleaning.
Damage Requiring Service
Unplugthisunitfromthewalloutletandreferservicingtoqualified
servicepersonnelunderthefollowingconditions:
1) Whenthepowercordorplugisdamagedorfrayed.
2) Iftheliquidhasbeenspilledintotheunit.

CONNECTIONS
IMPORTANT
Connectthe speakers, antennas, andalloptionalequipmentfirst. Thenconnect the AC cord.
1Connect your television set to this unit.
If your TV has an S-video input jack;
Connectthe S-VIDEO OUT jack of this unit tothe S-video
inputjackof your TV with anoptionalS-video connecting
cord. Alsoconnect the VIDEOOUT jack of this unit tothe
videoinputjack of your TV since thesignalfromS-VIDEO
OUTjackisoutputonlywhenthefunction is DVD/CD.
If your TV does not have an S-video input jack;
Connectthe VIDEO OUT jackofthisunittothevideoinput
jackofyour TVwiththesuppliedvideoconnectingcord.
NOTE
•Theillustrationhereshowsthe connection to the VIDEO
jack. S-(separate) video connection, if available, of fers
higher quality than conventional video (composite)
connection.
•Ifyourtelevisionisa16:9(wide)ratioset,thedefault“TV
DISPLAY” setting has to be changed in the DVD setup.
See“TV DISPLA Y”, page31.
•Direct connection between this unit and your TV set is
recommended,asdescribedabove.Ifthevideosignalfrom
this unit is made to pass through any other video
equipment,the picturewillbeblurred whenplayingcopy-
protectedDVDs.
•To view the video output from this unit, select the
correspondingvideoinputonyour TV.
2Connect the speakers to this unit.
Allspeakersforafull5.1-channelhometheaterconfiguration
comesuppliedwithyourDVD system.
1Placethe speakersintheirproperposition.
Thefront and thesurroundspeakersappearidenticalbut
shouldbe dif ferentiated.Checktheirrearpanels.
Eitherofthetwofrontspeakers canbeusedastherightor
theleft one,andlikewiseforthe surround speakers.

•L&R: Front speakers
•C: Center speaker
Placeitin the center of the two front speakers,possibly
onorbelowthe TV set.
•LS&RS: Surround speakers
Placethemdirectly to the sideofor slightly behind the
listeningarea. Alignthemhorizontally ,preferably0.6to1
meteraboveear height.
•SW:Subwoofer
Placeit anywhere between the two frontspeakers.
NOTE
•Donotplacetheleftandright front speakers close to the
TVset,asdoingsomaycausepicturenoise.
•Soundoutputfrom the center andsurroundspeakers is
onlyavailable when the surround ef fect (Dolby Surround
orDTS Surround etc.,)is activated withthe appropriate
setting.
•Tomountthefrontandsurroundspeakersonthewall,see
“MOUNTING THE FRONT AND SURROUND
SPEAKERS”,page8.
2Connectthe speakers.
•Theblack-colored cord goes to the 9terminalsandthe
othercordgoestothe 0terminals.
•Connectthe cordstothecorrespondingspeakers. Hold
downtheleverto insert the cord, then release.
•Connect the cord from the right front speaker to the
FRONT SPEAKERS R terminals,and the cord fromthe
leftfront speakertothe FRONT SPEAKERSL terminals.
•Connectthecordfromtheright surroundspeakertothe
SURROUND SPEAKERS RS terminals, and the cord
from the left surround speaker to the SURROUND
SPEAKERS LS terminals.
•Connectthecordfromthecenterspeakertothe CENTER
SPEAKER terminals.
•Connect the cord from the subwoofer to the SUB
WOOFER terminals.
NOTE
•Connect the speaker cords securely to the terminals.
Improperconnectionmaycausea shortcircuit.
•When connecting the speakers that are not supplied,
confirmthespeakerimpedanceandthespeakersettingof
thisunit(page25).
3Connect the supplied antennas.
Connect the FM antenna to the FM 75 Ω(COAXIAL) jack
andthe AM antenna tothe AM LOOP terminal.
4Connect the power supply.
Pluginthe ACpowercordofthisunittoawalloutlet.
NOTE
•Do not leave objects generating magnetism, such as credit
cards,nearthespeakers,astheobjectsmaybe damaged.
•DonotbringtheFMantennanearmetalobjectsorcurtainrails.
•Donot bring the AM antennanearother optional equipment,
thestereosystem itself, the AC cordorspeaker cords, since
noisewillbepickedup.
•Donotunwindthe AMantennawire.

CONNECTING AN OUTDOOR ANTENNA
ForbetterFMreception, use of an optional outdoorantennais
recommended.
Connecttheoutdoor antenna to FM 75 Ω(COAXIAL)jack.
MOUNTING THE FRONT AND SURROUND
SPEAKERS
Youcanmountthefrontand/orthesurroundspeakers,ifyouwant
todoso.
Using wall mounting screws (not supplied)
Selectaspotthatwillholdtheweightofthespeakersandcarefully
mountthe surroundspeakerssothatthey arefirmlysecured.
Using a speaker mounting kit (not supplied)
The front and surround speakers are equipped with a 5 mm
threadedinsert on their back side.Useittoattachtheballshaft
ofa speaker mounting kit on themarket.
Refertotheinstructionsofthemountingkitforfurtherinformation.
Youcan attach the speakers to the pedestal on the market with
the5suppliesscrews.Refertotheinstructionsofthepedestal
forfurtherinformation.
AIWA disclaims any responsibility for injuryto personsor
otheraccidentscausedbynotfittingthefrontand/orsurround
speakersproperly orif the place of theinstallation is not
suitable.
OPTICAL IN VIDEO 1/OPTICAL IN VIDEO 2
jack / OPTICAL OUT jack
The OPTICAL IN VIDEO 1 jack and OPTICAL IN VIDEO 2 jack
acceptdigitalaudioinputfromconnectedequipment.
The OPTICAL OUT jack outputs digital audio signals to the
connectedequipment.
Connectdigitalaudioplayback/recordingequipment,suchasan
MD recorder , a DAT deck, or a CD-R deck, etc. with optional
opticalfibercables.
Connecttheopticalinputjackoftheconnectedequipmenttothe
OPTICALOUTjack,andtheopticaloutputjackoftheequipment
to the OPTICAL IN VIDEO 1 jack or the OPTICAL IN VIDEO 2
jack.
Beforeconnectingthecable,removethedustcapfromthejacks.
Reattachthemwhenthejacks are not to be used.
CAUTION ON CONNECTING EQUIPMENT TO THE
OPTICAL OUT JACK
Whenconnectingdigitalequipmentwithoutabuilt-inDolby
Digital or DTS decoder , do not play back Dolby Digital or
DTS source with multichannel surround sound. When
connecting equipment that does not comform to 96 kHz
Linear PCM source, do not play back 96 kHz Linear PCM
source. Itmaycauseahighlevelofnoisewhichcouldharm
yourearsanddamagethespeakers.
•The OPTICAL IN VIDEO 1 or 2jack shares the same video
sourceas the VIDEO 1or 2 jack.
SUBWOOFER jack
Thisjackoutputsthelowfrequencysounds.
YourDVDsystemcomessuppliedwithapassive(non-powered)
subwoofer ,tobeconnectedtotheSUBWOOFER terminals , as
describedonpage6.
However,if you wish to connectan optional active(powered)
subwoofer , connect it to this jack using an optional audio
connectingcordwithRCA plugs.
PHONES jack
Connectheadphones with a stereominiplug(ø3.5mm, 5/32 in.).
Thejackislocated at the front of this unit.
•Nosoundisoutput from the speakerswhiletheheadphones
areplugged in.
•When the headphones are plugged in, the Dolby Pro Logic
surround system is canceled. The Dolby Digital or the DTS
surroundsystemautomaticallyswitchesto the 2ch STEREO
mode.

REMOTE CONTROL
INSERTING BATTERIES
OpenthebatterycoverontherearandinserttwoR03(size AAA)
batteries.
When to replace the batteries
Themaximumoperationaldistancebetween theremotecontrol
andthesensoronthemainunitshouldbeapproximately5meters
(16ft.).Whenthisdistancedecreases,replacethe batterieswith
newones.
NOTE
•Ifthe remote controlis not going tobe used foran extended
period of time, remove the batteries to prevent possible
electrolyteleakage.
•Theremote controlmaynotoperate correctlywhen:
-Thelineofsightbetweentheremote control and the remote
sensorinsidethedisplaywindowisexposedtointenselight,
suchasdirectsunlight
-Otherremotecontrolsareusednearby(thoseofa television,
etc.)
OPERATING OTHER EQUIPMENT
Youcanset the remotecontrolto operate otherequipmentby
inputtingthebrandcode.
Setting the brand code
1Turnontheequipment to be set.
2Holddownthecorrespondingsourcebutton( VIDEO1,VIDEO
2, TV, CABLE/SAT.) and press 0-9 to input the three-digit
brandcode.(Brandcode isshownattheendoftheoperating
instructions.)
3Releasethecorrespondingsourcebutton.
Thesettingiscompleted.
Operating other equipment
Pressthecorrespondingsourcebutton. Theremotecontrolgoes
tothecorresponding source mode. 0-9, TV/VIDEO, TV CH N
M,TV VOL +- and POWER etc.,are available.
Pressing POWERagainwithin3secondsturnsthisunitof feven
whentheremotecontrolis thecorrespondingsourcemode.
Whenoperatingthisunit ,press DVD/CD or TUNER/BAND.
NOTE
•Thisremote control may notcorrespondto all modelsofthe
brandshownattheendoftheoperatinginstructions.
•Whenthe batteries areremoved from the remotecontrol, all

•ISO 9660
ISO stands for the “International Organization for
Standarization”. ISO9660 determines the file structurefor
the CD-ROMs. This unit can play MP3 files recorded in the

•Nestingoffolders
To organize data files stored in a PC, you can store related
filesin a folder .A folder can containother folders as wellas
files.Forexample, folder A can contain folder B, and folder B
cancontain folder C; thisis called “nestingoffolders”. The

1. Use a writing software capable of recording MP3 files in

appearsonthe TVscreen. Toresume playback, press cwhile
the message is displayed. If a new disc is loaded when the
memory is full, the resume data for the oldest disc is erased.

Press SHIFT+REPEAT repeatedly on the remote
control during playback.
Witheachpress, the Repeat playback mode changes:
ONE:Repeatsthe current track.
To repeat playback of selected track(s)
Programthetrack(s)withtheprogramed playbackfunction,and
thenpress SHIFT+REPEATtorepeatplaybackoftheprogramed
tracks(see “PROGRAMEDPLA YBACK”,below).

Press 0-9 on the remote control to select the track.
Example:
To selecttrack 12, press 1,2.

Repeat steps 2 and 3 to program other tracks.

Press cto start playback.
Theprogramed tracks are playedbackintheorderofentry .
To stop programed playback
Press s.
To return to normal playback mode
Press SHIFT+PRGM duringstop. At this point,the program is
not cleared. Pressing SHIFT+PRGM again will be back to
programedplaybackmode.

To clear a programed track
Press ior ktodisplaythe track, and then press C.
To add tracks to the program
Press itodisplay the last order , andthen repeat steps2and3
duringstopintheprogramedmode. Thenewtracksare added
totheendof the program.
Programed playback for MP3 disc
1. Press SHIFT + PRGM toenterthe program mode.
Selecting“PROG-END”from PLA YMODE with i,k,jor l
alsoenters theprogrammode.
2. Press i,k,jor lto selectthe folder andpress ENTER.
3. Press i,k,jor ltoselect the fileto be programed.
4. Press cor ENTER.
Theselected file is programed.
