This document is the Technical Release Note of the Alcatel-Lucent 8234/8254 DECT software version 40.85
b0009.
This version is made available as a SW on the Enterprise Business Portal in the SW download section. It will also
be loaded at the factory for future productions of 8234/8254 DECT handset hardware (3BN67378AA/
3BN67330AB). SW modifications are detailed in sections “Delivered Features”, “Restrictions” and “Corrections and
Improvements”

3.1 DECT 8254
The Alcatel-Lucent 8254 DECT handset offers an easy-to-use, cost effective and reliable voice communication
solution that addresses the mobility needs of evolving healthcare/industrial business environments.
The characteristics are:
a larger 1.8” display compared to 8232,
a rubber protection,
a compatibility with IP65,
a drop height of 2m on concrete floor,
an easiness for a clean keyboard,
anti-bacterial materials,
New skin,
New settings reorganization,
Menu display change,
Clock in screen saver
The Alcatel-Lucent 8254 DECT Handset provides a convenient and practical solution for the basic personal
mobility needs of most business environments. It offers simple and efficient voice communications, enhanced
usability and compatibility with the existing Alcatel-Lucent base station portfolio. It also offers all of the
Alcatel-Lucent OmniPCX Communication Server value-added voice services (such as dial-by-name and multi-

line management) available for Alcatel-Lucent corded TDM/IP deskphones. 8254 can be registered as 8232 on
former OCO/OCE and OXE release.
3.2 DECT 8234
The Alcatel-Lucent 8254 DECT handset offers an easy-to-use, cost effective and reliable voice communication
solution that addresses the mobility needs of evolving business environments.
The characteristics of the 8234 are:

o8232: 133 x 52 x 23
Larger 1,8” Display compared to 8232
Strong and efficient belt clip
Drop height: 2m on wooden floor
New skin,

8234 can be registered as 8232 on former OCO/OCE and OXE release.

3.3 Supported Solutions
The 8234/8254 DECT Handset is introduced on call servers OmniPCX Enterprise and OmniPCX Office. It
provides DECT mobility feature to the following Alcatel-Lucent solutions:
Alcatel-Lucent OmniPCX Office (OCO/OCE) with following DECT infrastructures:
oTDM base stations (IBS) in AGAP mode
oIP-DECT base stations (4080 DAP, 8340 DAP and 8340C DAP) in GAP mode,
o8378 DECT IP-xBS in AGAP mode,
Alcatel-Lucent OmniPCX Enterprise (OXE) with following DECT infrastructures in AGAP mode:
oTDM IBS base stations,
oTDM RBS base stations,
oIP-DECT base stations (4080 DAP, 8340 DAP),

oThe new desktop charger has no USB connector. It has a fixed cable for connection to either
the AC/DC adapter for battery charge or PC for SW upgrade.

6Software Package
6.1 Versioning of the software
The range of software version for the 8234/8254 is from v4x.85 to v49.88. It is complemented by the 4 last
digits which corresponds to the build version bbbb.
x is incremented from 0 to 9 (from v40.85 to v49.85) before incrementing the two last digits from 85 to 86
(jump from v49.85 to v40.86) and so on… From v40.86 to v49.86, then v40.87.
It means for example that the software version v41.85 is older than a v40.86 although the number is higher.
That can be confusing.

6.2 SW Package
If a SW upgrade is needed, the SW package can be found on https://businessportal.al-enterprise.com
On the Enterprise Portal, select “Resources Center” > “Technical Support”
Then select “Mobiles Handsets” > “DECT Handsets” > “Download a Software version”
Then download the zip archive => Current archive is “8254-R100.v4085b0009.zip”.
The archive has:
A directory “firmware” which contains the software of 8234/8254 DECT Handset.
A directory “Test” which contains utilities to help capture traces during troubleshooting operations.
6.3 SW Upgrade
The “firmware” directory of the zip archive downloaded from the Enterprise Portal contains the software files
in format .HEX and .BIN corresponding to the two SW upgrade methods:

Manual method: software upgrade with the UST application for single or parallel SW upgrade. This
method requires SW file in format .HEX. More details in section below about manual SW upgrade.
Automatic method: software upgrade with the SUOTA feature (Software Upgrade over the Air)
available for OXE only. This method is described in the OXE technical documentation. This method
requires SW file in format .BIN. See TC2600.
6.4 Manual SW upgrade
6.4.1 UST (v0044b0001 version)
UST application can be downloaded from the Enterprise Business Portal. See TC2320 about the Unified
Support Tool UST and follow instructions in UST installation manual.
For 8234/8254 DECT Handset, UST must be used with Handset Download Tool 3BN67339AB. The
Handset Download Tool connects to 8234/8254 DECT Handset 3.5mm jack on one side and to PC
USB port on the other.
Procedure (described in UST installation manual) with 3BN67339AB.
6.4.1.1 Win7/10 and USB port
Download Tool (reference: 3BN67339AB) to the PC hosting the UST application. In that case the PC will
automatically install a USB driver on each USB port used (it’s about 3 to 4 minutes for automatic installation of
the driver) at first connection of a Download Tool.

8Support of Alcatel-Lucent Solutions
8.1 OXE
This new DECT handset type is supported on IBS, RBS and xBS systems. It is also supported on IP-DECT
systems with some restrictions. The TR version has not the right firmware. If you upgrade to an upper version
MD1 (patch M5.204.7.c) and beyond, the phone will update with SUOTA, but it will be blocked after.
A power on/off is required. It is mandatory to install the sets in MD1 patch to avoid this issue.
Interaction with older OXE releases
The new DECT handset 8234/8254 is supported from R12.3 release (M4) under the following conditions:
- Can be registered on release 12.3.x but is seen as an 8232 type. After migration in R12.4 & above it will be
still seen as an 8232.
- Telephonic features are fully supported
- Tools display these handsets as 8232
- Software upgrade is not available and should not be activated for these phones
If sets were installed in R12.3.x after migration they have to be re-registered as 8234/8254 to take advantage
of SUOTA & maintenance tools. As a telephonic point of view, they will work the same.
The ideal is to start working with 8254 in 12.4 M5.204.7c (M5 MD1).
