Introduction
Technologies that support nomadic information environments can be either wired or wireless.
Nevertheless, the advancement in the wireless technologies in the recent year has accelerated
organizations' efforts to achieve nomadic computing and culture, as these technologies support nomads
both within and beyond organizational boundaries. Today, employees are equipped with a wide variety
of computing devices from handsets to laptops for various information processing needs. These devices
have helped remote workers increase access to information and expedite fieldwork. Network services
such as Voice over IP (VoIP) and virtual private network (VPN) are helping create unified organizations
with a distributed workforce.
Reminder
My Phone (Web Softphone or 4980 Softphone application) delivers all of the basic and advanced
functions of an office telephone on a desktop or laptop computer. Used as a stand-alone end station or
in conjunction with phone sets (including IP devices), it provides following advantages:
Mobility with your business phone, which becomes a business softphone (thus, a unique phone
number). Running on a laptop, you can take your extension with you and receive calls wherever
you are connected to the corporate network (even dial-up connections while on the road can be
used to check voicemail and place calls while online). Your business phone is charged whatever
the physical phone/device you are using.
Access to corporate, public and personal directories besides OmniPCX phonebook.
Intuitive User Interface:
To quickly place calls.
For call control services and advanced softphone services.
Nomadic solutions with My Phone
When on the move, My Phone allows you to associate any phone (cellular, home phone…) for audio or
use your PC with Voice over IP (multi-media capabilities or USB headset/handset). Web Softphone and
4980 Softphone applications answer to all your needs:
The Home-Worker (through a PSTN number or Voice over IP).
The Nomadic-Worker:
Off Site mobility services (through a PSTN number or Voice over IP).
On Site mobility services (e.g. with DECT/PWT, Voice over IP).
The Virtual Office:
For non-dedicated workplace (PC and phone set) in the Company.
Before providing you with business examples, let’s explain first capabilities you have when moving On
Site or Off Site the Company. Following schema illustrates and summarizes these capabilities
(models/modes):

Model [1] - User is associated to a physical extension (telephone); in this case, two modes are
available when moving On Site or Off Site with a unique phone number:
PSTN mode, thanks to a PSTN phone (cellular phone, home phone…) for the audio part.
VoIP mode, thanks to a Personal Computer with Voice over IP (multi-media capabilities or USB
headset/handset).

Notes:
User’s physical extension is frozen in Model [1] (PSTN or VoIP mode). This means that the phone
set cannot be used until the Nomadic mode is cancelled.
The PSTN mode associates a PSTN number to any phone set (this phone set is not monitored by
the OmniPCX Enterprise/4400 system):
Off Site with, for example, your cellular phone or home phone.
On Site with, for example, a SIP phone or the Cellular Client (remote
extension).

Use cases
Let’s consider hereafter three examples (nomadic-workers, home-workers and road warriors), showing
mobility capabilities you have with your Softphone applications:
Nomadic-workers
Local nomadic workers consist of employees whose jobs require them to spend a great deal of time
away from their desks to attend meetings, interact with co-workers, or solve problems. While they are
restricted to the vicinity of their workplace, their jobs still require them to be highly mobile.
In the example below, you have a physical office on site A with an office phone, and you usually keep
your personal mobile phone with you. You have to move at another company site (B) for a meeting with
co-workers. So, question is: what kind of possibilities I have with my Softphone applications for being
reachable and performing outgoing calls, like in my office ?

Once connected to the corporate network at site B, several possibilities are offered with your PC:
Either use the Web Softphone/4980 Softphone application in VoIP mode, i.e. use your PC
with Voice over IP (multi-media capabilities or USB headset/handset) for the audio part.
Or use the Web Softphone/4980 Softphone application in PSTN mode: associate your personal
mobile phone or the phone set in the meeting room for the audio part (the phone set in the
meeting room must be reachable through a PSTN number).
Note: when using the 4980 Softphone application, user is able to switch dynamically from PSTN mode to
VoIP mode and vice-versa.

Home-workers
Home-workers are employees working mainly from home for improving productivity and cutting down
on travel costs. With a business-class Internet connection in the home office, home-workers can work
conveniently and without compromising on speed and performance.
In the example below, you have a physical office on site A with an office phone, and you usually keep
your personal mobile phone with you. For going faster in your new job, you need to stay at home for
the next two weeks. At home, you need to make long distance business calls without being charged. Via
the Internet, you can access the corporate directory or personal contacts, use click to call and contact
your correspondents. Your business phone will be charged for the call. OK, but what should I use ?

Once connected to your corporate network, thanks to a VPN connection, you have the choice to use:

your PC with Voice over IP (multi-media capabilities or USB headset/handset) for the audio
part.
Or your PC and the Web Softphone/4980 Softphone application in PSTN mode (for associating
your personal mobile phone or home phone for the audio part).
Or your wireless PDA and the Web Softphone application in PSTN mode (for associating your
personal mobile phone or home phone for the audio part).
Note: when using the 4980 Softphone application, user is able to switch dynamically from PSTN mode to
VoIP mode and vice-versa.

Road Warriors – Virtual Offices
As office-free professionals, road warriors don’t have some of the perks that office employees take for
granted, like hearty Internet access, reliable landline phone connections, and always-on email.
Solutions for road warriors must be of high enough quality so as to completely substitute, not merely
support, the traditional LAN-connected workstation and desk phone.
In example below, for weekly meetings, you have to move either to the Headquarter (A) or at another
company site (B or C). You don’t have any office and office phone, but of course, you always keep your
professional mobile phone with you. So, during the days you are staying in your virtual office, you need
to be reachable and make business calls using efficient communication tools.
