INTRODUCTION
Thank you for purchasing the ALERT™ J5 – a breath
alcohol tester (BAT) that measures the alcohol level in
human breath. Based on your jurisdiction, your ALERT J5
comes with preset levels that indicate whether the alcohol
breath test result is a fail (red LED light), warning (amber
LED light) or pass (green LED light).
SAFETY AND PRECAUTIONS
Take the following precautions to ensure smooth and
uninterrupted use of your device:
• Use the product for its intended purpose only
• Use AA Alkaline batteries only
• Do not store in extreme heat or cold and avoid
exposing the device to direct sunlight for extended
periods of time
• Do not blow smoke or any uids into the mouthpiece,
as these can damage the sensor
• Do not open the BAT case. Doing so will void the
warranty and may also damage the components within
• Keep all magnets and transmitting devices (such as
mobile phones) away from the BAT to minimize RF
interference
• If you spill any liquid on the ALERT J5, remove all
excess uid with a cloth and allow the device to dry
thoroughly before attempting to power on. Do not
power on in case of excessive water damage

WARRANTY
All ACS products are warranted to be free of defects in
workmanship and materials for a period of one year from
the date of shipment. ACS agrees to replace or repair any
defective device, provided the defect was not caused by
misuse or mishandling.
The ALERT J5 being returned for warranty repairs
must be properly packaged and shipped prepaid to an
authorized service provider.
MAINTENANCE
ALERT J5 requires periodic maintenance and calibration.
After testing and calibrating at the factory, ALERT J5 is
deactivated so it can be stored without losing any clock
time from the calibration period. You need to activate it to
start using it (see the “Activating” section). Once activated,
ALERT J5 automatically increments the date for the next
calibration by 365 days from the date of activation.
NOTE: ALERT J5 is calibrated for optimal performance at
the point of shipment.

TESTING
Taking a Breath Test
NOTE: Certain things like drinking, eating, and smoking
may distort the results of a breath alcohol test. It is
recommended that you rinse your mouth with water or
wait for at least 20 minutes before taking a test.
1. Take a new mouthpiece and insert
it on top of the ALERT J5 device.
With the display facing you, connect
the mouthpiece to the device by
aligning the holes and having the
rimmed (larger) end of the mouthpiece
pointing to the left.
NOTE: To ensure accurate results,
use a new mouthpiece for each
test. A used mouthpiece may be
contaminated from the previous
tests, which may result in inaccurate
readings. Use part number 95-000130
to order more mouthpieces from ACS.
2. Power on the device by pressing
either of the two buttons. You will
see a ashing amber LED light and
a WAIT message as the device goes
through the boot up sequence.
3. After 2 to 3 seconds, once the ashing
LED light turns green and the device
displays a READY message, you can
begin a breath test.

4. Take a deep breath and blow into
the mouthpiece moderately, at a
constant rate and pressure, until you
hear a click sound (approximately
5 seconds). You should hear a
continuous beep, indicating a proper
breath ow. The click indicates the
sampling process is complete.
NOTE: If the breath sample is
insufcient, the LED light ashes
red and you will see a message to
correct the problem. Refer to the
“Troubleshooting” section for details.
5. Stop blowing when you hear the click
and the tone stops.
6. The device analyzes the sample.
Time taken (a few seconds) depends
on the amount of alcohol present
in the breath sample. If the breath
test is being done outdoors in colder
weather, the time to analyze may
increase by a few seconds.
7. ALERT J5 analyzes and displays the
results.
NOTE: The colour of the LED light
that accompanies the results is
for reference only; results given in
numbers should be considered at
all times, especially for new and
professional drivers that may have a
different maximum limit as per local
regulations.
