Overview
The AT-BMGMT Management Module is designed for the AT-8324SX Fast
Ethernet Switch. The module can be used to manage an AT-8324SX switch or
an AT-8324SX stack. It offers a variety of management options, including
SNMP, RMON, and a web-based interface. An RS-232 port on the module
provides for out-of-band management.
The installation of the module adds a wide range of advanced performance-
enhancing features to the switch, including port-based and tagged VLANs,
plus Quality of Service (QoS), which ensures the minimum delay for moving
real-time multi-media data across the network.

Caution
The AT-BMGMT Management Module is designed for the AT-8324SX
Fast Ethernet Switch only. Do not install this module in any other
Allied Telesyn device.
For installation instructions for the AT-8324SX switch, refer to the AT-
8324SX Fast Ethernet Switch Installation Guide. For instructions on how to
manage a switch or stack, refer to the AT-S29 Management Software User’s
Guide. Both of these guides are available from the Allied Telesyn web site.

Electric Shock Hazard: To prevent electric shock, do not remove the
cover. There are no user-serviceable parts inside. The unit contains
hazardous voltages and should only be opened by a trained and
qualified technician. 5
Warning
Lightning Danger: Do not work on this equipment or cables during
periods of lightning activity. 6
Warning
Power cord is used as a disconnection device: To de-energize
equipment, disconnect the power cord. 7
Warning
Electrical-Type Class 1 Equipment: This equipment must be
earthed. The power plug must be connected to a properly wired earth
ground socket outlet. An improperly wired socket outlet could place
hazardous voltages on accessible metal parts. 8
Caution
Pluggable Equipment: The socket outlet should be installed near the

National Electric Codes. 12
Handling the Module
Caution
The AT-BMGMT Management Module can be easily damaged by
electrostatic discharge.
To prevent electrostatic damage, observe the following guidelines:
Do not remove the module from its packaging until you are ready to
install it.
Do not touch any of the module’s pins, connectors or components.
Hold the module only by its edges or front panel.
Wear an anti-static wristband connected to a suitable earth ground
whenever handling the module.
Store or transport this module only in appropriate anti-static
packaging.

4
Installing the Module
To install the module, perform the following procedure:
1. Power off the switch by disconnecting the AC power cord from the switch.
If the switch is connected to a redundant power unit (RPU), disconnect the
DC cable connection to the switch.
Caution
The switch must be powered off before installing or replacing the
module. Installing the module with the switch powered on can damage
the module.
Note
If you have created a stack of AT-8324SX switches, you must install the
AT-BMGMT Management Module in the bottom or the top switch in the
stack.
2. Using a flathead screwdriver, loosen the screws securing the faceplate to
the top expansion slot on the switch and remove the faceplate.
Caution
The management module must be installed in the top expansion slot on
the switch. Do not install the module in any other expansion slot.
Note
Keep the original faceplate for future use. If you should remove the
module, replace the faceplate to prevent dust and debris from entering
the unit and to maintain proper air flow.

3. Insert the AT-BMGMT Management Module into the switch. Holding the
new module with the text on the front panel upright, carefully slide the
module into the slot, ensuring that the edge connector is fully engaged.
Once the module is installed, check to be sure that the front panel of the
module is flush against the switch.
4. Secure the new module in place by tightening the retainer screws.
Making the Console Port Connection
To connect a VT100 compatible terminal or a PC with a terminal emulation
program to the RS232 console on the management module, perform the
following procedure:
1. Connect one end of the null-modem interface cable supplied with the
management module to the RS232 console port on the module. Tighten the
retaining screws to secure the cable to the module.
Figure 3 Connecting a Terminal to the Console Port
2. Connect the other end of the null-modem cable to a terminal or a PC with
a terminal emulation program.
3. Configure the terminal or the terminal emulation program as follows:
Type: VT100
Data Rate: 9600 baud
Parity: none
Data Bits: 8
Stop Bits: 1
