AT-VP504E FXO vii
PWelcome to the AT-VP504E FXO
The AT-VP504E FXO is an H.323 Gateway that connects up to four
PSTN lines to a Local Area Network with access to an Intranet or the
Internet to permit high-quality, full duplex, audio/fax communications
over IP Packet Networks. This way, the AT-VP504E FXO acts as a
Gateway for bridged communications.
Before you Begin This manual provides all the information needed to install and manage
the AT-VP504E FXO with the configuration web pages. It is intended
for network administrators who install and set up network equipment;
consequently, it assumes a basic working knowledge of LANs (Local
Area Networks).
From the perspective of the LAN administrator, an AT-VP504E FXO
presents itself just like another PC that is to be added to the LAN. It
requires the same kind of TCP/IP addressing that is required by a PC.
The AT-VP504E FXO can also use a DHCP server on the LAN to
automatically receive its IP configuration assignment.

AT-VP504E FXO 1
1Introducing the AT-VP504E FXO
This chapter introduces the AT-VP504E FXO. It describes the
AT-VP504E FXO’s main features and illustrates its front panel
indicators and back panel connectors.
Overview The AT-VP504E FXO is an analog gateway that allows connectivity
between the PSTN and a VoIP network. This way, an IP-based
telephony system can be linked to the PSTN world through up to four
(4) standard telephone lines. The AT-VP504E FXO devices are
stackable so the number of telephone lines that are required can be
easily met by adding more devices in the network.
Why use the
AT-VP504E
FXO?
Merges voice and data traffic onto a single unified
network.
Carrying telephone traffic over data networks uses less
bandwidth (as compared to telephone trunks), resulting in a
more cost-effective network solution.
Easily integrates with existing telephone equipment.
Overhead is minimal, because the AT-VP504E FXO
gateways fully utilize your existing telecommunications
equipment and computer networks.
Bypasses long-distance toll charges for realized savings.
Supports 10 Mb/s and 100 Mb/s Ethernet networks.
Upgrades software easily for future enhancements.
Uses the latest standards in Internet Telephony.
• H.323 protocol for call management
• Real-Time Transport Protocol (RTP) for voice
streaming
Supports the following Codecs:
• G.711 (µ-law, A-law)
• G.723.1 (5.3 kbps and 6.4 kbps)
Supports Quality of Service technologies.
• Differentiated Services (DS) Field
• IEEE 802.1q user priority tagging

Chapter 1 - Introducing the AT-VP504E FXO Administration Manual (H.323 Version)
AT-VP504E FXO 2
How does it
Work? The AT-VP504E FXO is a gateway. When a PSTN user contacts the
AT-VP504E FXO, the call is answered and a second dial tone (IP dial
tone) is presented to the PSTN user. The number dialed at this
moment will be parsed by the AT-VP504E FXO and used in an H.323
call establishment.
The AT-VP504E FXO contacts an H.323 compliant gatekeeper. The
gatekeeper then looks through its internal database to translate the
dialed number to a corresponding IP address. If none exists, the
gatekeeper will locate a gateway (which can be another AT-VP504E
FXO) for placing the call on the PSTN.
When an Internet telephony call is placed from one location to another,
the voice signals pass through the AT-VP504E FXO. They are
compressed into data packets, which are then diverted by the
AT-VP504E FXO onto an IP/data network such as the Internet, or
another type of data network. Upon reaching its destination, the data is
converted back into voice signals, then fed into the corresponding
endpoint.
The AT-VP504E FXO system utilizes technology that optimizes
available bandwidth, so users do not hear echoes, stops and starts, or
annoying clicks and pops. When traffic congestion is properly
managed, AT-VP504E FXO customers cannot tell that their
conversation is being carried over a packet network rather than the
traditional PSTN.
See“AT-VP504E FXO Call Processes” on page 53 for more details on
AT-VP504E FXO call process and other examples.
Features The following table lists some of the features the AT-VP504E FXO
offers.

over clear channel).
Note: If an incoming modem call is at 56.6 kbps,
negociating will occur, then transmissions errors.
Compliant
with H.323
FastConnect
The H.323 FastConnect procedure is an enhancement
feature introduced in the H.323v2 protocol to reduce the
initialisation latency when initiating a call. To operate in
FastConnect mode, all H.323 elements (calling party,
caller party, gatekeeper) involved in the call setup activity
must comply to the FastConnect procedure. Otherwise,
the normal initialisation procedure takes place.
Remote Site
Configuration/
Management
The AT-VP504E FXO can be integrated seamlessly into
your existing administration environment. Implementation
of a HTTP server allows device-related adjustment
parameters to be modified and polled remotely. The
software upgrade (CPU and DSP code) is downloaded
via a TFTP server.
