1 Important Safety Instructions
The following symbols and labels are used throughout this
manual to indicate immediate or potential safety hazards. It
is the owner’s and installer’s responsibility to read and com-

To prevent the risk of property damage, personal
injury, or death, do not store combustible materials or
use gasoline or other flammable liquids or vapors in
the vicinity of this unit.
CARBON MONOXIDE POISONING HAZARD
-
Special Warning for Installation of Furnace or Air Handling Units in
Enclosed Areas such as Garages, Utility Rooms or Parking Areas
Carbon monoxide producing devices (such as an automobile, space
heater, gas water heater, etc.) should not be operated in enclosed areas
such as unventilated garages, utility rooms or parking areas because of
the danger of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning resulting from the exhaust
emissions. If a furnace or air handler is installed in an enclosed area such
as a garage, utility room or parking area and a carbon monoxide producing
device is operated therein, there must be adequate, direct outside
ventilation.
This ventilation is necessary to avoid the danger of CO poisoning which
can occur if a carbon monoxide producing device continues to operate in
the enclosed area. Carbon monoxide emissions can be (re)circulated
throughout the structure if the furnace or air handler is operating in any
mode.
CO can cause serious illness including permanent brain damage or death.

2 Shipping Inspection
Always transport the unit upright; laying the unit on its side or
topduringtransitmaycauseequipmentdamage.The installer
should inspect the product upon receipt for shipping damage
and subsequent investigation is the responsibility of the car-
rier. The installer must verify the model number, specifica-
tions, electrical characteristics, and accessories are correct
prior to installation. The distributor or manufacturer will not
accept claims from dealers for transportation damage or in-
stallation of incorrectly shipped units.
2.1 Parts
Alsoinspect the unit to verify allrequiredcomponentsare
present and intact. Report any missing components im-
mediately to Goodman®or to the distributor. Use only
factory authorized replacement parts (see Section 5).
Make sure to include the full product model number and
serial number when reporting and/or obtaining service
parts.

Installation and repair of this unit should be performed
by individuals meeting the requirements of an
“entry level technician” as specified by

appropriately sized electrical wire connecting the
ground lug in the unit control box to the building
electrical service panel.
Other methods of grounding are permitted if performed
in accordance with the National Electric Code
(NEC)/American National Standards Institute
(ANSI)/National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 70
and local/state codes. In Canada, electrical grounding
is to be inaccordance with the Canadian Electric Code
(CSA) C22.1.

2.2 Handling
Use caution when transporting/carrying the unit. Do not
move unit using shipping straps. Do not carry unit with
hooks or sharp objects. The preferred method of carrying
the unit after arrival at the job site is to carry via a two-
wheel hand truck from the back or sides or via hand by
carrying at the cabinet corners.
3 Codes & Regulations
This product is designed and manufactured to comply with
applicablenationalcodes.Installation in accordance withsuch
codesand/orprevailinglocal codes/regulations is the respon-
sibility of the installer. The manufacturer assumes no respon-
sibilityforequipmentinstalled in violation ofanycodesorregu-
lations.
TheUnitedStates EnvironmentalProtectionAgency (EPA)
has issued various regulations regarding the introduc-
tion and disposal of refrigerants. Failure to follow these
regulations may harm the environment and can lead to
the imposition of substantial fines. Should you have any
questions please contact the local office of the EPA and/or
refer to EPA’s website www.epa.gov.
4 Replacement Parts

5 Pre-Installation Considerations
5.1 Preparation
Keep this document with the unit. Carefully read all in-
structions for the installation prior to installing product.
Make sure each step or procedure is understood and any
specialconsiderationsaretakeninto account before start-
inginstallation.Assemblealltools,hardware and supplies
neededtocomplete theinstallation.Someitems may need
to be purchased locally. Make sure everything needed to
install the product is on hand before starting.
5.2 System Matches
The entire system (combination of indoor and outdoor
sections) must be manufacturer approved and Air-Condi-
tioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI) listed.
NOTE: Installation of unmatched systems is not permit-
ted and will void the product warranty.
5.3 Interconnecting Tubing
Give special consideration to minimize the length of re-
frigeranttubingwheninstalling air handlers. Refer to Re-
mote Cooling/Heat Pump Service Manual RS6200006,
andTP-107 Long Line SetApplicationR-410Afor tubing
guidelines. If possible, allow adequate length of tubing
suchthatthecoilmayberemoved(forinspectionorclean-
ing services) from the cabinet without disconnecting the
tubing.
5.4 Clearances
The unit clearance from a combustible surface may be
0". However, service clearance must take precedence.
A minimum of 24" in front of the unit for service clear-
anceis required.Additionalclearanceononesideortop
will be required for electrical wiring connections. Consult
allappropriateregulatorycodespriortodeterminingfinal
clearances. When installing this unit in an area that may
becomewet(suchascrawlspaces),elevatetheunitwith
a sturdy, non-porous material. In installations that may
lead to physical damage (i.e. a garage) it is advised to
install a protective barrier to prevent such damage. Al-
ways install units such that a positive slope in conden-
sate line (1/4" per foot) is allowed.
5.5 Horizontal Applications
If installed above a finished living space, a secondary
drain pan (as required by many building codes), must be
installed under the entire unit and its condensate drain
line must be routed to a location such that the user will
see the condensate discharge.
6 Installation Location
NOTE: These air handlers are designed for indoor installa-
tion only.
The AVPTC**14** product line may be installed in one of the
upflow, downflow, horizontal left or horizontal right orienta-
tions as shown in Figures 2, 3, 4 and 5. The unit may be
installedin upfloworhorizontalleftorientation asshipped(refer
to specific sections for more information).
Minorfieldmodifications arenecessarytoconvert todownflow
or horizontal right as indicated in below sections.
6.1 Upflow Installation
No field modifications are mandatory however to obtain
maximum efficiency, the horizontal drip shield must be
removed.
Drip Shield Removal: RefertoFigure1,removethetwo
(2)screwsthatsecurethedripshield support brackets to
thecondensatecollectors(onescrewperside). Remove
the two (2) screws that secure the drip shield to the drain
pan. The drip shield and drip shield brackets may now
be removed.

Refer to Figure 6 and 7 for the location of the compo-
nents referenced in the following steps.
1. Before inverting the air handler, remove blower access
panel and coil access panel. The coil access panel and
tubing panel may remain screwed together during this
procedure.Remove and retain the seven(7)screwsse-
curing the coil access panel to the cabinet and the six
(6)screwssecuringthebloweraccesspaneltothecabi-
net.
2. Slide the coil assembly out using the drain pan to pull
the assembly from the cabinet.
NOTE: DO NOT USE MANIFOLDS OR FLOWRATOR
TO PULL THE COIL ASSEMBLY OUT. FAILURE TO
DO SO MAY RESULT IN BRAZE JOINT DAMAGE
AND LEAKS.
3. Removal of the center support is required on units with
21"widecabinet. Removeandretainthetwo(2)screws
that secure the center support to the cabinet. Remove
the center support.
4. Using the drain pan to hold the coil assembly, slide the
coil assembly back into the cabinet on the downflow
brackets as shown in Figure 8.
5. Re-install the center support (if removed) using the two
(2) screws removed in Step 4.
6. Re-install theaccesspanelsremoved inStep1asshown
in Figure 9.
7. The bottom left drain connection is the primary drain for
this application and condensate drain line must be at-
tached to this drain connection. The top connection of
the three drain connections on the drain pan must re-
main plugged for this application. The bottom left drain
connection is for the secondary drain line (if used).

In applications where the air handler is installed in the hori-
zontal left position (), and the return air environment sees
humidity levels above 65% relative humidity coupled with to-
tal external static levels above 0.5" e.s.p., a horizontal con-
densate management kit is available for field application. Kit
nomenclature can be found in the table above and in the
specification sheets.
6.3 Downflow/Horizontal Right Installation
IMPORTANT NOTE: In the downflow application, topre-
vent coil pan “sweating”, a downflow kit (DFK) is avail-
able through your local Goodman distributor. The DFK is
not supplied with the air handler and is required by
Goodman on all downflow installations. See Table 2 for
the correct DFK and follow the instructions provided for
installation.

7 Refrigerant Lines
This product is factory-shipped with R410A and dry
nitrogen mixture gas under pressure. Use appropriate
service tools and follow these instructions to prevent
injury.
A quenching cloth is strongly recommended to prevent
scorching or marring of the equipment finish when
brazing close to the painted surfaces. Use brazing
alloy of 5% minimum silver content.
NOTE: Refrigerant tubing must be routed to allow adequate
access for servicing and maintenance of the unit.
Do not install the air handler in a location that violates the
instructionsprovidedwith the condenser. If the unit is located
inan unconditioned area with high ambient temperature and/
or high humidity, the air handler may be subject to nuisance
sweating of the casing. On these installations, a wrap of 2"
fiberglass insulation with a vapor barrier is recommended.
7.1 Tubing Size
Forthecorrect tubing size, follow the specification for the
condenser/heat pump.
7.2 Tubing Preparation
All cut ends are to be round, burr free, and clean. Failure
to follow this practice increases the chances for refriger-
ant leaks. The suction line is spun closed and requires
tubing cutters to remove the closed end.
NOTE: To prevent possible damage to the tubing joints,
do not handle coil assembly with manifold or flowrator
tubes. Always use clean gloves when handling coil as-
semblies.
Applying too much heat to any tube can melt the tube. Torch
heat required to braze tubes of various sizes must be
proportional to the size of the tube. Service personnel must
use the appropriate heat level for the size of the tube being
brazed.
CAUTION
NOTE: Theuseofaheatshieldisstronglyrecommended
when brazing to avoid burning the serial plate or the
finish of the unit. Heat trap or wet rags must be used to
protectheatsensitivecomponentssuchas servicevalves
and TXV valves sensing bulb.
7.3 Tubing Connections for TXV Models
TXV models come with factory installed TXV with the
bulb pre-installed on the vapor tube.

1. Remove refrigerant tubing panel or coil (lower) access
panel.
2. Remove access valve fitting cap and depress the valve
stem in access fitting to release pressure. No pressure
indicates possible leak.
3. Replace the refrigerant tubing panel.
4. Remove the spin closure on both the liquid and suction
tubes using a tubing cutter.
5. Insert liquid line set into liquid tube expansion and slide
grommet about 18" away from braze joint.
6. Insert suction line set into suction tube expansion and
slideinsulationandgrommetabout18"awayfrombraze
joint.
7. Braze joints. Quench all brazed joints with water or a
wet rag upon completion of brazing.

8 Condensate Drain Lines
The coil drain pan has a primary and a secondary drain with
3/4" NPT female connections. The connectors required are
3/4"NPTmale,eitherPVCormetal pipe, and should be hand
tightened to a torque of no more than 37 in-lbs. to prevent
damage to the drain pan connection. An insertion depth of
approximately 3/8” to 1/2” (3-5 turns) should be expected at
this torque.
1. Ensure drain pan hole is not obstructed.
2.Topreventpotentialsweating and dripping on to finished
space, it may be necessary to insulate the condensate
drain line located inside the building. Use Armaflex®or
similar material.
Asecondarycondensatedrainconnectionhasbeenprovided
for areas where the building codes require it. Pitch all drain
lines a minimum of 1/4" per foot to provide free drainage.
Provide required support to the drain line to prevent bowing.
If the secondary drain line is required, run the line separately
fromtheprimarydrain and enditwherecondensatedischarge
can be easily seen.
NOTE: Water coming from secondary line means the coil
primary drain is plugged and needs immediate attention.
Insulate drain lines located inside the building or above a
finished living space to prevent sweating. Install a conden-
sate trap to ensure proper drainage.
NOTE: When units are installed above ceilings, or in other
locations where damage from condensate overflow may
occur, itis MANDATORY to install a fieldfabricatedauxiliary
drain pan under the coil cabinet enclosure.
CAUTION
If secondary drain is not installed, the secondary
access must be plugged.
The installation must include a “P” style trap that is located
as close as is practical to the evaporator coil. See Figure 12
for details of a typical condensate line “P” trap.
NOTE: Trapped lines are required by many local codes. In
the absence of any prevailing local codes, please refer to the
requirementslistedintheUniformMechanicalBuildingCode.
A drain trap in a draw-through application prevents air from
being drawn back through the drain line during fan operation
thus preventing condensate from draining, and if connected
to a sewer line to prevent sewer gases from being drawn into
the airstream during blower operation.
Field experience has shown condensate drain traps with an
open vertical Tee between the air handler and the conden-
sate drain trap can improve condensate drainage in some
applications, but may cause excessive air discharge out of
the open Tee. Goodman®does not prohibit this type of drain
but we also do not recommend it due to the resulting air leak-
age. Regardless of the condensate drain design used, it is
the installer’s responsibility to ensure the condensate drain
system is of sufficient design to ensure proper condensate
removal from the coil drain pan.

Use of a condensate removal pump is permitted when nec-
essary. This condensate pump should have provisions for
shutting off the control voltage should a blocked drain occur.
A trap must be installed between the unit and the conden-
sate pump.
IMPORTANT NOTE: The evaporator coil is fabricated with
oilsthatmaydissolve styrofoam and certain types of plastics.
Therefore, a removal pump or float switch must not contain
any of these materials.
Tip: Priming the “P” trap may avoid improper draining at the
initial installation and at the beginning of the cooling season.
9 Ductwork
This air handler is designed for a complete supply and return
ductwork system.
To ensure correct system performance, the ductwork is to be
sized to accommodate 350-450 CFM per ton of cooling with
the static pressure not to exceed 0.5" in w.c. Refer to ACCA
Manual D, Manual S and Manual RS for information on duct
sizingandapplication. Flame retardant ductworkistobeused
and sealed to the unit in a manner that will prevent leakage.
NOTE: A downflow application with electric heat must have
an L-shaped sheet metal supply duct without any outlets or
registers located directly below the heater.
9.1 Return Ductwork
DO NOT LOCATE THE RETURN DUCTWORK IN AN
AREA THAT CAN INTRODUCE TOXIC, OR OBJEC-
TIONABLEFUMES/ODORSINTOTHEDUCTWORK.
The return ductwork is to be connected to the air han-
dler bottom (upflow configuration).
Do not operate this product without all the ductwork
attached.
10 Return Air Filters
Each installation must include a return air filter. This filtering
may be performed at the air handler using the factory filter
rails or externally such as a return air filter grille. When using
the factory filter rails, a nominal 16x20x1”, 20x20x1” or
24x20x1” (actual dimension must be less than 23-½”x20”) fil-
ter can be installed on a B, C and D cabinet respectively (the
cabinet size is the seventh letter of the model number).
11 Electric Heat
Refertotheinstallationmanualprovidedwiththeelectric heat
kitforthecorrectinstallationprocedure. Allelectricheatmust
be field installed. If installing this option, the ONLY heat kits
that are permitted to be used are the HKS series. Refer to
theairhandlerunit’sSerialand Rating plate or the HKSspeci-
fication sheets to determine the heat kits compatible with a
given air handler. No other accessory heat kit besides the
HKS series may be installed in these air handlers.
The heating mode temperature rise is dependent upon the
system airflow, the supply voltage, and the heat kit size (kW)
selected. Use data provided in Tables 3, 4 and 5 to deter-
mine the temperature rise (°F).
NOTE: For installations not indicated above the following
formula is to be used:
TR = (kW x 3412) x (Voltage Correction) / (1.08 x CFM)

NOTE: The Temperature Rise Tables can also be used to
estimate the air handler airflow delivery. When using these
tables for this purpose set the room thermostat to maximum
heat and allow the system to reach steady state conditions.
Insert two thermometers, one in the return air and one in the
supplyair. Thetemperatureriseisthesupplyairtemperature
minus the return air temperature. Using the temperature rise
calculated,CFMcan be estimatedfromtheTRformula above.

information.

11.1 No Electric Heat Installed
If no electric heat accessory kit is installed, a cover plate
mustbeinstalledovertheopeningforelectricheat. This
cover plate kit is available from Goodman®and Amana®
brand distributors.

12 Electrical and Control Wiring
IMPORTANT: All routing of electrical wiring must be made
through provided electrical knockouts. Do not cut, puncture
or alter the cabinet for electrical wiring.
12.1 Building Electrical Service Inspection
This unit is designed for single-phase electrical supply
only. DO NOT OPERATE ON A THREE-PHASE
POWER SUPPLY. Measure the power supply to the
unit. The supply voltage must be measured and be in
agreement with the unit nameplate power requirements
and within the range shown.

12.2 Wire Sizing
Wire size is important to the operation of your equip-
ment. Use the following check list when selecting the
appropriate wire size for your unit.
FIRE HAZARD!
To avoid the risk of property damage, personal injury
or fire, use only copper conductors.
HIGH VOLTAGE!
Failure to do so may cause property damage,
personal injury or death.
Disconnect ALL power before servicing.
Multiple power sources may be present.
HIGH VOLTAGE!
To avoid property damage, personal injury or death
due to electrical shock, this unit MUST have an
electrical ground. The
electrical ground circuit may consist of an
appropriately sized electrical wire connecting the
ground lug in the unit control box to the building
electrical service panel.
Other methods of groundingare permitted if performed
in accordance withthe National Electric Code
(NEC)/AmericanNationalStandards Institute
(ANSI)/National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 70
and local/state codes. In Canada, electrical grounding
is to be in accordance with the Canadian Electric Code
(CSA) C22.1.

• Refer to the NEC (USA) or CSA (Canada) for wire siz-
ing. The unit MCA for the air handler and the optional
electric heat kit can be found on the unit Series and
Rating Plate.
•Wire must be sized to allow no more than a 2% volt-
age drop from the building breaker/fuse panel to
the unit.
• Wires with different insulation temperature rating have
varying ampacities - be sure to check the temperature
rating used.
Refer to the latest edition of the National Electric Code
or in Canada the Canadian Electric Code when deter-
mining the correct wire size.
12.3 Maximum Overcurrent Protection (MOP)
Every installation must include an NEC (USA) or CEC
(Canada)approvedovercurrentprotectiondevice. Also,
check with local or state codes for any special regional
requirements.
Protection can be in the form of fusing or HACR style
circuit breakers. The Series and Rating Plate provides
the maximum overcurrent device permissible.
NOTE: Fuses or circuit breakers are to be sized larger
than the equipment MCA but not to exceed the MOP.
12.4 Electrical Connections – Supply Voltage
IMPORTANT NOTE: USE COPPER CONDUCTORS
ONLY.
Knockouts are provided on the air handler top panel
and sides of the cabinet to allow for the entry of the
supply voltage conductors, as shown in Figure 13. If
the knockouts on the cabinet sides are used for electri-
cal conduit, an adapter ring must be used in order to
meet UL1995 safety requirements. An NEC or CEC
approved strain relief is to be used at this entry point.
Some codes/municipalities require the supply wire to
be enclosed in conduit. Consult your local codes.

12.4.1 Air Handler Only (Non-Heat Kit Models)
Thebuildingsupplyconnectstothestrippedblackand
red wires contained in the air handler electrical com-
partment cavity. A ground screw is also contained in
this area. Attach the Supply wires to the air handler
conductors as shown in the unit wiring diagram using
appropriatelysizedsolderlessconnectorsorotherNEC
or CEC approved means.
12.4.2 Air Handler - Non-Circuit Breaker Heat Kits
A terminal block is provided with the HKS kit to attach
the power supply and air handler connections. Follow
theHKSInstallationManualandwiringdiagramforcom-
plete wiring details.
12.4.3 Air Handler With Circuit Breaker Heat Kit
The air handler has a plastic cover on the upper ac-
cess panel that will require either one or both sections
to be removed to allow the heat kit circuit breaker(s) to
be installed. The circuit breakers have lugs for power
supplyconnection.See theHKSInstallationInstructions
for further details.
12.5 Low Voltage Connections
Severalcombinations of low voltage schemes arepos-
sible, depending on the presence of a heat kit and
whether the heat kit is single-stage or multi-stage,
whethertheoutdoorsectionis an air conditionerorheat
pump, and whether the system is setup with a commu-
nicating or traditional thermostat. The 24V-control volt-
age connects the air handler to the room thermostat
and condenser. Low voltage wiring must be copper
conductors. A minimum of 18AWG must be used for
installationsupto50’ and16AWGforinstallationsover
50’. Lowvoltagewiringmustbeconnectedthroughthe
top of the cabinet or either side. See the “Thermostat
Wiring” section of this manual for typical low voltage
wiring connections.
13 Achieving 2% Low Leakage Rate
Ensureallthe gaskets remainintactonallsurfaces asshipped
with the unit. These surfaces are areas between the upper
tie plate and coil access panel, blower access and coil ac-
cess panels, and between the coil access and filter access
panels.Ensureupon installation, thattheplasticbreaker cover
is sitting flush on the blower access panel and all access
panels are flush with each other and the cabinet. With these
requirements satisfied, the unit achieves less than 2% air-
flow leakage when tested in accordance with ASHRAE Stan-
dard 193.
