Installation Instructions/Recommendations
Mounting the Smart Series Unit
oThe unit should be installed internally of the vehicle only and not within the vehicle engine bay
oIt should be mounted as close to the auxiliary battery to be charged as possible
oThe unit can be mounted in any orientation to assist installation but must have a min 60mm clearance
around the entire unit to allow for efficient heat exchange from the unit to the ambient air
oWhilst it can be mounted onto any surface, you can increase the thermal conductivity of the Smart Series
and aid its performance by mounting it directly onto an internal metal vehicle surface –this will create a
metal-on-metal heat exchange
oAn additional metal panel may be installed, or the unit could be installed directly to the vehicle metal floor
or similar utilising applicable self tapping screws and the mounting points on the side flanges of the unit

SMART Series Introduction
The SMART Series 1230.1 is a high performance +12Vdc - 30 AMP multi-stage battery-to-battery charger. It
incorporates the latest euro 5/6 (Eco) compatible software, working seamlessly with smart alternators and vehicle
manufacturers’eco-technology, including stop-start and regenerative braking. The charger uses advanced multi-
stage battery charging technology to automatically and precisely charge +12Vdc auxiliary batteries in a controlled
and safe manner, not only ensuring maximum and speedy charging but also keeping batteries in optimum
condition, minimising battery degrading and possible long term failure.
Vehicle Eco-Technology: Prior to vehicle manufactures’introduction of eco-technology, the original vehicle
alternator charging program was 14.4 Volts output, as long as the vehicle engine was running. Vehicle
manufacturers have now developed smart alternators and smart battery charging programs to reduce wasted
energy, limit fuel consumption and also meet the most recent vehicle emissions requirements. Different vehicle
manufacturers use different smart charging profiles and are continuously updating these as they develop their
technology. The SMART Series compatible software takes into account these programs by effectively interfacing
and controlling the multi-stage charging of auxiliary batteries (as long as the vehicle battery is more than +12Vdc)
and is compatible for vehicles equipped with stop-start and regenerative braking.
Battery Compatibility: The SMART Series is compatible with most +12Vdc battery types including AGM, GEL,
Flooded and Sealed lead acid battery variants. Maximum 250ah (amp-hour).
Multi-Stage Charging: The SMART Series uses advanced multi-stage charging technology, with an automatic
boost charge program to maximize battery charging when required, indicated by the charge LED indicator on the
unit flashing AMBER. This will automatically switch to a float charge program (flashing GREEN) when required, to
effectively maintain the auxiliary battery charge level, ensuring the auxiliary battery never overcharges and the
vehicle battery remains fully charged.
Charging Protection: The SMART Series utilizes an advanced heat sink design, which is fully protected from
thermal overheating, without the need for an integrated cooling fan. It will automatically turn off or lower the current
charging capacity when required until the operating temperature falls below the maximum safe temperature. The
current output is also overload protected and is fused with an onboard 50 AMP fuse. The unit is protected in the
event of an unstable battery connection (indicated by a RED solid light on the LED indicator), which can be easily
resolved with disconnection (see page 3).
Vehicle Ignition Contact: The SMART Series utilizes a +12Vdc input connection via the vehicle ignition switch
ON/OFF only while the vehicle engine is running to control the operation of the smart charging program, ensuring
charging when required.

Smart Series Unit Connection and Fusing (+12Vdc only) - IMPORTANT
It is most important to fit the correct fuse and a quality fuse holder into the installation to protect the cable, wiring
and the SMART Series unit.
+ VE INPUT
oFit a 50 AMP fuse and fuse holder as close to the +12Vdc connection to the vehicle battery as possible to
protect the full length of cable and wiring to the SMART Series unit
oConnect directly to the vehicle battery + positive terminal
+ VE OUTPUT
oThis output is protected by a 50 AMP fuse that is integrated on to the front of the SMART Series unit and
no additional fusing is required to this output
oConnect directly to the auxiliary battery + positive terminal
+ IGNITION INPUT
oFit a 1 AMP fuse and fuse holder as close to the +12Vdc connection to the vehicle ignition ON/OFF supply
as possible to protect the full length of cable and wiring to the SMART Series unit
oConnect directly to the vehicle ignition switch supply ON/OFF +12Vdc (> +11.0V) when the vehicle engine
is running and 0 Vdc when the vehicle engine is not running
_ CHASSIS GROUND
oNo fusing is required
oConnect directly to the vehicle - negative battery terminal/vehicle manufacturers designated chassis
ground point as close to the vehicle battery as possible
Smart Series Unit Cable and Wiring (+12Vdc only) –IMPORTANT
It is most important to install only the correct quality cable and wiring, observing maximum lengths and gauge to
protect the SMART Series unit.
+ VE INPUT: Minimum 10mm² –maximum length 5m RED –connect directly to the vehicle battery + positive
terminal.
+ VE OUTPUT: Minimum 10mm² –maximum length 1m BROWN –connect directly to the auxiliary battery +
positive terminal.
+ IGNITION INPUT: Minimum 1mm² –maximum length 5m YELLOW –connect directly to the vehicle ignition
switch supply ON/OFF + 12 VDC when the vehicle engine is running, and 0Vdc when the vehicle engine is not
running.
_ CHASSIS GROUND: Minimum 10mm² –maximum length 5m BLACK –connect directly to the vehicle - negative
battery terminal/vehicle manufacturers designated chassis ground point, as close to the vehicle battery as possible.

RED SOLID*
RESET
*Red Solid indicates an unstable battery connection; follow the reset procedure:
1. Disconnect +12Vdc power from both the + VE INPUT and the + VE OUTPUT at both of the batteries
2. Wait 30 seconds
3. Reconnect the + VE OUTPUT first then the + VE INPUT, ensuring stable connection
4. The unit will automatically reset
Cautions
oUse only the specified installation consumables provided for connection to the SMART Series Unit
oFully secure and protect all cable and wiring with relevant cable protection and installation consumables
oProtect the SMART Series from direct exposure to moisture and high pressure washing, as this will render
the unit inoperable and void the warranty
oNever reverse polarity or over voltage/current to the SMART Series unit, as this will render the unit
inoperable and void the warranty
oThe unit may become hot to the touch in operation, which is normal with this type of heat sink design
oEnsure only the correct 50 AMP minimum fuse is used for the +12Vdc output of the unit on replacement
