PRODUCT WARRANTY
AnalyticalTechnology,Inc.(Manufacturer) warrantstothe Customerthatifanypart(s)
ofthe Manufacturer's equipmentprovestobe defectiveinmaterialsorworkmanship
withinthe earlierof18 monthsof the dateof shipmentor12monthsof the dateofstart-
up,suchdefectivepartswillbe repaired orreplacedfreeofcharge.Inspectionand
repairstoproductsthoughttobe defectivewithinthewarrantyperiodwillbe completed
atthe Manufacturer's facilitiesinCollegeville,PA. Productson whichwarrantyrepairs
arerequired shall be shippedfreight prepaidtothe Manufacturer. The product(s)willbe
returnedfreightprepaidandallowed ifitisdeterminedbythe manufacturerthatthe
part(s)failed duetodefectivematerialsorworkmanship.
Thiswarrantydoesnotcoverconsumableitems,batteries,orwearitemssubject
toperiodicreplacement includinglampsandfuses.
Gassensorscarrya12 monthsfromdateofshipmentwarrantyandaresubject
toinspectionforevidenceofmisuse,abuse,alteration,improperstorage,orextended
exposuretoexcessivegasconcentrations.Shouldinspection indicatethatsensors
havefailed duetoanyoftheabove, the warrantyshall notapply.
TheManufacturerassumesnoliabilityforconsequentialdamagesofanykind,
and thebuyerbyacceptanceofthisequipmentwill assumeall liabilityforthe
consequencesofitsuseormisusebythe Customer, hisemployees, orothers. A defect
withinthe meaningofthiswarrantyisanypartofanypieceofaManufacturer's product
whichshall,when suchpartiscapableof beingrenewed,repaired,orreplaced,operate
tocondemnsuchpieceofequipment.
Thiswarrantyisinlieu ofall otherwarranties(includingwithoutlimitingthe
generalityofthe foregoingwarrantiesofmerchantabilityand fitness foraparticular
purpose),guarantees,obligationsorliabilitiesexpressed orimplied bythe Manufacturer
oritsrepresentativesand bystatuteorruleoflaw.
Thiswarrantyisvoidifthe Manufacturer's product(s)hasbeensubjecttomisuse
orabuse,orhasnotbeen operatedorstoredinaccordancewithinstructions,orifthe
serialnumberhasbeenremoved.
AnalyticalTechnology, Inc. makesnootherwarrantyexpressed orimpliedexcept
asstated above.

Part 1 - Introduction
1.1General
TheModelPQ45-65PortableChlorine Dioxide Monitorisdesignedforshort-term
measurement and dataloggingofresidualchlorine dioxide inwatersystems. It
mayalsobeused forpermanent monitoringinlocationswheresolarpower
systemsareavailabletoprovide continuouspower.
Eachsystemisaself-contained packagethatincludesabattery-powered
analyzer, sensor,flowcell assembly, andsampleflowcontrols.Forsystems
suppliedwithoptionalpHmeasurement, twosensorsand flowcellsareinstalled.
Sampleand drainconnectionsareprovided on the outsideof thecase,and
connectorsand tubingtoadapt towatersamplesaresupplied. Samplelines
withpressuresup to75PSI(5Bar) maybe connectedwithout pressure
reduction. Forsamplessubjecttohigherpressures, apressure-reducingvalve
shouldbe usedtocontrolsamplepressuretoless than75PSI (5Bar).
Boththe fittingsinstalled inthe caseand thefittingssupplied forsampletubing
connection externallyareequippedwithshut-offvalves.Whenbothfittingsare
plugged in,samplewill flow.When eitherthe inletoroutletfittingsare
disconnected,sampleflowwill stop.Sampleflowrateiscontrolledinternallybya
specialorificeflowcontroldevicethat providesafixed 400cc/min. flowatsample
inletpressuresbetween 5and 75PSI (0.3-5.0Bar).An in-line y-straineris
installed totrapparticleslargerthan65micron.
Mostsystemcomponentsaremountedonahinged panelinside thecase.The
electronicunitismounted on thefrontofthepanel.Iftheoptionaldatalogger
wasordered,thisisalsomountedonthefront. Openingupthe internalpanel
allowsaccess tothe sensor,flowcell,and flowcontrolassembly.Maintenance
items, connectors, and extratubingarestoredinthe spacebehind the panel.
1.2Standard System
StandardPQ45 systemsinclude abattery-powered electronicunit, achlorine
dioxide sensorandflowcell,flowcontrolcomponents,sampleanddraintubing,
and variousaccessories.The standardbatteriesconsistoftwostandard
alkaline C-cell batterieslocatedinsidetheelectronicassembly.
Optionalitemsmaybeinstalledifspecifiedwhenordered.Thetwomainoptions
areapHsensorand flowcell assemblyandaremovablebattery-powered data
loggerwithsoftware

Part 2–SystemComponents
2.1General
ThePQ45 PortableClO2MonitoringSystemcomescompleteinarugged molded
case,and isdesigned tobe operated bysimplysettingthe caseinthe desired
location,connectingsampleand draintubes,andturningonthepower.
However,when received,the sensorsarenotyetreadyforuse,and the user
mustfirstpreparethe chlorine dioxide sensorand pHsensorifsupplied.Once
the systemhasbeenreadiedforuse,itcanbe turned on and off,and moved to
variouslocationswithout requiringfurtherservice.
2.2FrontPanel Components
ThePQ45 containsaninternalhinged panel. Releasethe twomaincaselatches
and you will see theelectronicmonitoronthe frontofthe panelwithagraphicof
the softwaremap located below. The graphicismeanttobe areferencefor
navigatingthe softwareinthe analyzer. Iftheoptionaldataloggerwasordered,
thiscomponent will be locatedjustbelowthe monitor, and will havetwo
connectorsplugged intotheside.

2.3Internal FlowSystem
The“Wet”sectionof theanalyzerislocated ontheback of theinternalhinged
panel. Thepanelisheldinplacebytwocaptivescrewson theright side.
Loosen thesescrewstoget access tothesensorsandsampleflowcomponents.
Figure3identifiestheitemslocated on the back ofthe panel. Notethat the
drawingshowsthe optionalpHsensorandflowcell, but theseitemsareonly
suppliedwhen specifiedontheorder.

Theflowsysteminsidethe caseconsistsofquick-disconnect sampleanddrain
fittings, polyurethane tubing,flowcontrolassembly, andeitherone ortwo
flowcellswithsensors.Thissystemiscompletelyassembled andisdesigned for
connection towatersourceswithpressurebetween 5and 75 PSI.Notethatthe
draintube MUSTdischargetoanunpressurized drain. Youmaynotconnect the
draintoapressurized line orthe systemwill notfunctionproperly.

Most tubingconnectionsaremade usingwhat arecalled “instanttube fittings”.
Thesefittingaredesigned toallowtubingtobe readilyremoved incaseserviceis
needed on aparticularcomponent.Thisisnormallyonlyneededtoremovethe
flowcontrolassemblytocleanthey-strainer.
Theinstanttubefittingshaveacircularcollarat theend ofthe fitting.Thiscollar
mustbe pushedtowardthemainbodyofthefittingwhilepullingthe tubinginthe
oppositedirection.When reinsertingthe tubing, simplypress thetubingintothe
fittingandyou will feelit slide intoplace.
2.4FlowControl System
Thesampleflowtothe sensorsinthisinstrument iscontrolledbyaspecialorifice
controldevicethatcontrolssampleflowtoapproximately400 cc/min. regardless
ofvariationsininletpressure. The flowcontroldeviceisprotectedbyay-
strainer. Thisstrainerisdesigned toremoveanylargeparticlesthatmight
adverselyaffect theperformanceof theflowcontrol.
They-strainershouldbeinspectedperiodicallyand cleaned ofaccumulated
solids. Todo so, it iseasiest toremovetheentireflowcontrolsystemby
disconnectingtheinlet and outlet tubesfromthe top andbottomof the assembly,
and thenremovingit fromthe mountingclip. Onceremoved,useacrescent
wrenchtounscrewthescreen holder. Removethe screenand rinseasneeded
toremoveanyaccumulated solids.
2.5Sensor Polarizer
EachPQ45Hchlorinedioxide systemissupplied witha“sensorpolarizer”
designed tofacilitatestabilization ofthe ClO2sensor,andtokeepthesensorina
statewhereit isreadyforuseimmediately, even ifthe analyzeristurned off.
Thepolarizerisabattery-operateddevicethatprovidesabiasvoltageonthe
sensorelectrodessimilartothatprovided bythe analyzer. The batteryissealed
inside the deviceandshouldlast 3-5years.
Thepolarizerwill plugdirectlyintotheconnectoron thebackendof the chlorine
dioxide sensor.Tomaintainsensorstabilitywhen the mainelectronicunit isoff,
disconnect the sensorcableand plugthepolarizerintothe back ofthe sensor.
Theunit canbestoredinthiswaysothat itisreadytooperateimmediately.

2.6WaterSampleConnections
Onthehinged sideofthe casearetwoquick-disconnectfittingsmarked INLET
and OUTLET. Thisiswhereyou will connectyourwatersample.These
connectorscontainvalvesthat automaticallyclosewhen thematingconnectoris
removed.Matingconnectorsalsocontainvalvessothatsamplelinescan be
disconnectedwithout closingthe maintapvalve.
A 20-foot (6m.)lengthof0.25”O.D. x0.17”I.D. polyurethane tubingissupplied
forconnectiontowaterlines. Inaddition, tubefittingsthatmatewitheither1/8”
NPTor¼” NPTsamplelinesaresupplied forconvenience.
2.7SpareParts
Behindtheinternalpanelinthe area ofthe flowcellsand sensorsisamolded
foamareathatholdssparepartsthatmight beneededinthefield.Thefollowing

Part 3–SensorPreparation
3.1ChlorineDioxideSensor Preparation
TheClO2sensorsupplied withthe PQ45Hisshippeddry.It will notoperateuntil
itisprepared byaddingelectrolyteand amembrane.Preparation ofthe sensor
foroperation mustbedonecarefully.Theprocedureshouldbedonebya
qualified technician,and itshouldonlybe donewhen the systemisreadyfor
operation.Until then,itisbesttoleavethe sensorintheconditioninwhichitis
received.

Followthe procedurebelowtopreparethechlorine dioxide sensorforoperation:
1.Unscrewthe electrolytechamberfromtheassembledsensorand also
removethefill screw(vent screw)fromthe sideofthesensorbody.
2.Removethe frontnutfromthe bottomofthechamberanddiscardthe
protectivemembrane.O-ringsarecontainedingrooveson boththebottom
and topofthechamber. Besurethattheseo-ringsremaininplace.
3.Fromthepackageofmembranessupplied withthe sensor,placeanew
membrane intothe frontnut. Themembraneiswhiteincolor and is
separatedfrom othermembranesbyalightbluepaperspacer.

4.Screwthe frontnutontothe chamberuntilyou feeltheo-ringcompress.
Hand tightcompressionisall thatisneeded. Donotusetoolstotighten.The
membrane shouldbeflat across thebottomof the chamberwithoutwrinkles.
5.Fill the chamberwithelectrolyteuntil thelevelreachesthe bottomofthe
internalthreads.
6.Slowlyscrewthe chamberontothesensorbody.Asmall amountof
electrolytewill run outofthe holefromwhichthe ventscrewwasremoved.
Placeapapertowelaroundthe sensortoabsorbtheelectrolyteoverflow.
Theelectrolyteisharmless andwill notirritateskin. Tightenthechamberuntil
the o-ringatthe topofthe chamberiscompressed.Onceagain,donotuse
toolstotighten.
7.Shakeexcess electrolytefromtheventholeon theside ofthesensorand
replacethe fill screw.
Thesensorisnowreadyforoperation.Themembrane shouldbestretched
tightlyacross the tipofthe sensor.Screwthe sensorintothe flowcellon the
back of thehinged panel. Notethat you do not needtoscrewthesensorin
completely. Thesealismade usingan o-ringon the body. Simplyscrewit in
until you caneasilyplug inthe connectorforthe sensorcable.The flowcell
shouldcontainenough watertokeepthe membrane area wetforproperstorage.
Besuretohavethedrainfitting pluggedintotheoutsideportwhen
inserting and removing sensors. Whenfittingsarenotconnected, trying to
removeor insertasensor willbeextremelydifficult.
CAUTION:Whenhandling theassembledsensor, do notsetthesensor onits
tipor damagetothemembranewill result.Severeimpactson thetip
ofthesensor from dropping or othermisuse maycause permanent
damagetothesensor.

3.2Sensor Polarizer(Keeper)
EachPQ45Hchlorinedioxide systemissupplied witha“sensorpolarizer”
designed tofacilitatestabilization ofthe chlorine dioxide sensor,and tokeep the
sensorinastatewhereit isreadyforuseimmediately, even ifthe analyzeris
turnedoff. It plugsontotheback of thesensorandmaintainssensorstability
when the monitorisnot inuse. Byusingthe keeper, you canreconnect the
sensorand beginmeasuringwithin5or10 minutes,even when yourmonitorhas
beenshut off foran extended period.
Chlorine dioxide sensorshavearelativelylongstabilization timewhen theyhave

Afterpreparingthesensoraccordingtosection3.1Chlorine Dioxide Sensor
Preparation andinstallingthe sensorintheflowcell withasmall amountofwater,
simplyplugthe keeperintothe back ofthe sensorwheretheanalyzercableis
normallyconnected. Fornewsensors, yoursystemwill be readyforusewithin
4-8hours. Foroldersensorswherethemembrane andelectrolytewerechange,
2hoursisgenerallysufficient.
Thesensorkeeperusesasealed batterysystemandisadisposabledevice. It
shouldlastfor3yearsormoreinnormalservice. Replacement keepersare
listed onthesparepartslist at the endofthismanual.Besuretofollowall
applicableenvironmental regulationswhendisposing ofthisdevice.
3.3Optional pHSensor
TheoptionalpHsensoravailableforusewiththe PQ45Hsystemisa
combinationpH/referenceelectrodewithastainless steelsolutionground.It is
directlyconnected tothe electronics assemblyand isheldinplaceinthe flowcell
withatwist-lock arrangementon the cap.
DuringfinaltestingofPQ45 systems,tap waterisrun throughtheflowsystem.
Someofthiswateristrappedinside the flowcellstoinsurethe pHsensorwill
remainwetduringtransport. SensorsforpHshouldalwaysbe stored wet. A
rubberbootissuppliedinthesparepartscontainershouldyouwishtostorethe
pHsensoroutside theflowcell duringextended periodswhen the analyzerwill
notbe used.Pourasmall amountofpH4bufferintothe bootandslide itonto
the endofthesensor.SomeTeflon tape stretched aroundthe top oftheboot will
helpkeep thesolution contained.

pinsline up withthe insertion slotsand CAREFULLY pull the sensorupward.Be

4.1General
PQ45 PortableAnalyzersarefactorywired and arereadytooperateasreceived.
Ifunitsweresuppliedwiththe optionaldatalogger,voltageoutputcablesthat
plugintothe loggerwill be supplied.Ifnologgerwaspurchased withthe unit,
thesecableswill notbe installed.Unitssupplied withtheexternalpowerand
output connectorwill be provided withamatingcableassembly.
4.2Sensor Connections
Figure6belowprovidesinformation on theproperconnectionofsensorcables.
Thisinformationisforreferenceonlyastheconnectionsaremadeatthe factory.
Notethatjumperswill be installedatthefactorybetween terminals3and5,and
terminals6and 9when no pHsensorinputisconnected toreducethe potential
fornoisepickup. RemovethejumpersifapHsensor isaddedlater.

4.3Battery/ PowerCircuitBoard
PQ45Hmonitorsarenormallypowered byinternalC-cell alkalinebatteriesorby
an externalpowerconnection. Figure7showsthisboardassemblywith
batteriesinstalled. Figure8showsthe sameboardwithterminalsinstalled for
externalpowerconnection.
Thebatterycircuit boardcontains3switchassembliesasshowninthe drawings.
Thefirst (S1) isan On/Off slide switch. Thisswitchmust beinthe ONposition
foroperation. Turnit toOFF ifyou donot intend tooperatethe monitorinthe
next weekortwo.
Thesecondswitchassembly (S2) containstwoswitches, theoneonthe left
markedLOCKandthe one on theright markedMODE. The function ofthese
twoslide switchesareasfollow:
LOCK Thisswitchisusedtodefinehowthemonitorwillturnon andoff.
ThisswitchisnormallyintheOFF position. Withthe lock switch
off, the monitorwill be turnedonmanuallyusingthe MENU keyon
the frontofthe monitor. Withthelock switchintheONposition,the
monitorwill alwaysbe on when thereisenoughpowertorun the
monitor. TheONposition isnormallyused when operatingfroman
externalpowersupplyintendedforcontinuousoperation.

MODE Thisswitchisusedtoset thevoltageatwhichmonitorwill shut off
when powered byinternalbatteries.Alkalinebatteriescannormally
be rundowntoabout0.75 volts. However, themonitorcan be
operated usingrechargeablenickel-metalhydride (NiMH) batteries
aswell. Thistype ofbatteryshouldnot bedischarged belowabout
1volt beforerecharging. Whenusingalkalinebatteries,themode
switchisinthe OFF position (factorydefault).Ifrechargeable
NiMH batteriesaresubstituted, placethe MODE switchinthe ON
position. Notethat rechargeableNiMH batterieshaveonlyabout
35%of thecapacityofan alkaline C-cell, sooperationwill be
limited toabout 10dayson acharge. However, NiMH batteriescan
be recharged hundredsoftimes.
Thethirdswitchassemblyisasingleslide switch (S3) whichdefineswhetherthe
0-2.5VDC signalsfromthe monitorareisolated ornon-isolated. Output isolation
isnot required whenoutputsareconnected totheinternaldatalogger. However,
ifthe outputsareconnectedtoexternaldevicesthroughtheexternalconnection
cable,puttingthisswitchinthe ISO positionwill protect againstpossibleground
loops.The isolationcircuit will slightlyincreasethepowerrequirementforthe
monitor, resultinginabit less batterylife.
4.4ExternalPower/ OutputConnections
PQ45Hunitsorderedwiththe externalconnection optionaredesigned for
applicationswherepoweristobe suppliedfroman externalsource,andthetwo
voltageoutputsaretobe wired toanexternaldevice. Ifthat optionhasbeen
supplied, aninterfacecablewill be provided.
Figure8belowidentifiestheterminalconnectionsforexternalpowerand voltage
outputs.Theseterminalarefactorywired toaconnectoronthesideofthecase,
and areconnectedtothe outsideusingthesuppliedinterfacecable.
