yourhome. Since1981,AquaCalhasmaintainedtheworldwideleadinthe
manufactureofswimmingpool&spaheatpumps.
Yournewheatpumpisnotonlyagreatinvestment,butalsothemostcosteffective
methodavailableforheatingpoolsandspas.Forexample,asameanstoheatpool
orspawater,yourheatpumpisupto400%moreefficientthangas,and,when
comparedtoelectricresistanceheat,yourheatpumpisnearly600%more
effective. Youcanrestassuredthatyournewheatpumpisofthehighestquality
andefficiency,andisdesignedandbuilttoprovideyearsof trouble-freeoperation.
Moreover,shouldyoudecideyouwouldlikeAquaCaltoprovideregular
inspectionandmaintenanceforyourheatpump–which we do recommend–youwill

Y OURNEWHEATPUMPISEQUIPPEDWITHTHEFOLLOWINGINNOVATIVEFEATURES :
• ThermoLink™ HeatExchanger:
TheheartofyourheatpumpisthepatentedThermoLink™ heatexchanger. Theprimary
causeofprematureheatpumpdemiseisthefailureoftheheatexchanger. Ordinaryheat
exchangersaremadefromacupronickelalloy.Thiscupronickelmaterialissusceptibleto
attackfromthesanitizersusedinpoolsandspas,andfromotherrelatedwaterchemistry
conditions.Oncetheheatexchangerfails,theheatpumpisruined.TheThermoLink™ heat
exchangertubeismadefromtitanium,andisvirtuallyimpervioustowater-chemistry
damage.
• ScrollCompressor:
Scrollcompressorscontain50%fewermovingpartsthancommonpiston-typecompressors.
Lessmovingpartsequatestomuchimprovedreliability. Additionally,scrollcompressors
aremuchquieterinoperationthanpiston-typecompressors,andoperateataconsiderably
higherefficiencylevel.
• MicroprocessorControl:
Full-feature,digital-basedmicroprocessor,controlswatertemperaturetowithin1ºFahrenheit
ofsetpoint. Thecontrolleralsopermitsusertopredefinedifferentpoolandspawater
temperatures,andtopreventtamperingbylockingoutcontrolsusingapasscode.

GENERAL SAFETY INFORMATION
Usedandmaintainedproperly,yourheatpumpwillprovideyear-upon-yearofsafe
andeconomicalservice. However,aswithanymechanicalorelectricaldevice,to
getthemostfromyourheatpump–while insuring personal safety for you and
others–certainoperationalandmaintenancefactorsmustbeobserved.
Likewise,exceptingafewminorowner-capablemaintenanceitems(explained
later in this manual), repairandserviceofyourheatpumpmustbeperformedonly
byexperiencedservicepersonnel. Shouldyou,theowner,suspectyourheatpump
isnotperformingproperly,byreferringtothesectioninthismanualentitled:
“Troubleshooting”,youwillbeabletodetermineifacallforserviceisrequired.

Prolongedimmersioninwaterwarmerthannormalbodytemperaturemay
causeaconditionknownasHYPERTHERMIA.Thesymptomsof
hyperthermiainclude:unawarenessofimpendinghazard,failuretoperceive
heat,failuretorecognizetheneedtoexitspa,andunconsciousness. Theuseof
alcohol,drugs,ormedicationcangreatlyincreasetheriskoffatal
hyperthermia. Inaddition,personshavinganadversemedicalhistory,or
pregnantwomen,shouldconsultaphysicianbeforeusingahottuborspa.
Childrenandtheextremeelderlyshouldbesupervisedbyaresponsibleadult.

AHeatPumpDoesNotMakeHeat…
Heatpumpsaresoextraordinarilyefficientbecausetheydonotneedtoproduce
heatinordertowarmpoolorspawater. Rather,heatpumpssimplytransfer heat
from theoutsideairintothepoolorspawater. Ifoneconsidersthatabsolute
“0”–the point where all heat is absent–occursat459ºFahrenheitbelowzero,it
becomesevidentthatoutsideair–even at the relative cool temperature of
55ºFahrenheit–stillcontainslargeamountsofheatenergy. Itisthatabundantheat
energythataheatpumpcapturesandplacesintoyourpoolorspa.

INITIAL START UP
1. Startthewatercirculatorpump.
NOTE: T HE P OOL F ILTER P UMPMUSTBEOPERATINGFORTHEHEATPUMPTOBEGIN
HEATING . A NYTIMETHE P OOL F ILTER P UMPISTURNEDOFF , THEHEATPUMPWILLALSOBE
OFF .
2. Ensurethattheunithaspowerconnected;displayshouldbeilluminated.
3. Ifthedisplayisblank,becertainthebreakerandheaterdisconnectareswitched
to“ON”.
HOW TO OPERATE THE CONTROLS
1. Oncetheunithaspowerconnected,thedisplayshouldreadeither“OFF”or
theactualpoolorspawatertemperature. Ifotherthan“OFF”ortheactual
watertemperaturearedisplayed,seethe“TroubleShooting”section.
2. Ifthedisplayreads“OFF”, presstheuparrowkeyuntilthedisplayreads
60°Forhigher.

3. Oncetheunitisdisplayingthecurrentwatertemperature,thesystemis
readytooperate. LocatethePOOL/SPAselectorkeyonthecontrolpanel;
bypressingthiskey,youcanselectbetweenthepoolandspamode.
4. UsingthePOOL/SPAselectorkey,selectthepoolmode. Whenthepool
modehasbeenselected,thepoolindicatorlight,locatedontheleftsideof
thedisplay,willbeilluminated.
5. Withthecontrolinthepoolmode,usetheUP/DOWNarrowkeystosetthe
desiredpoolwatertemperature.
6. Ifheaterisalsobeingusedtoheataspa,repeattheprevioustwostepsto
programthedesiredspawatertemperature.
7. Theheatpumpwillnowmaintainthedesiredwatertemperatureforthe
modeselected: POOL,orSPA.

CONTINUOUS USAGE AND WATER AROUND UNIT
o Ifyouhavefollowedthedirectionsuptothispoint,youshouldbeonyourwayto
enjoyingawarmpoolorhotspa.
o Aftertheheatpumphasbeenrunningforsometime,youmayseewaterpresent
aroundtheheater. Thiswateriscondensationproducedasaby-productof
transferringheatfromtheairtoyourpoolorspa. Ifthehumidityishigh,water
quantitiesof 6-8gallonsperhourarenotuncommon. Conversely,alow-
humidityconditionmayresultinnocondensationbeingproduced.
REQUIRED HOURS OF POOL PUMP OPERATION
S OMEPOOLSYSTEMSUTILIZEATIMERTOCONTROLTHEPOOLFILTERPUMPONATIME - OF - DAY
BASIS . I FYOURPOOLSYSTEMINCORPORATESATIMER , USETHEFOLLOWINGINSTRUCTIONS :
o Itwillbenecessarytoallowyourpoolcirculatorpumptoruncontinuouslyuntil
thepoolhasreachedthedesiredtemperature.
o Ifatimercontrolsyourpump,itwillbenecessarytooverridethetimerto
temporarilyallowfor24-hr.pumpoperation.
o Oncethedesiredtemperaturehasbeenobtained(this may take up to four days),
youshouldresetyourpumptimeclockfornormaloperatinghours.
R EMEMBER … THE HEAT PUMP CAN ONLY OPERATE WHEN THE CIRCULATOR
P UMP IS RUNNING . T HEREFORE , INORDERTOKEEPUPWITHINCREASEDHEAT

TO SHUT THE UNIT OFF
o Theunitcanbestoppedbyswitchingofftheelectricalsupplyorbysettingthe
desiredtemperaturelowerthantheactualwatertemperature.
o Theunitwilldisplay“OFF”ifthedesiredwatertemperatureissetbelow60°F.

GENERAL MAINTENANCE
o Youshouldhaveyourheatpumpinspectedandmaintainedonanannualbasisby
aqualifiedpoolheatpumpspecialist. Additionally,ifyourheatpumpislocated
onthebeach,orataseawallwheresaltsprayandsandcanaffecttheunit,more
frequentservicemaybenecessary. ForServicePlaninformation,pleasesee
APPENDIX-Iattherearofthismanual,andthencontactAquaCalCustomer
Supportat:800-786-7751.
o Providegoodairflowtotheheatpump. Keepthesidesandtopoftheheatpump
freeofobstructions.
o ControlIrrigation: Inregionswerewellsareusedforirrigation,waterqualityis
sometimeslessthanpoor,andwaterspraycandamageheatercomponents.
Regardlessofwaterquality,itisrecommendedthatsprinklersbedirectedaway
fromtheheatpump.
o Preventrainwaterrun-off,fromroofs,frompouringdirectlyintotheheater. The
heaterisdesignedtowithstandnormalrainfall,butsolidstreamsofwaterfrom
roofdrip-linesmayeventuallydamageheatpumpcomponents. Iftheheatpump
residesbeneatharoofedge,topromoteheatpumplongevity,arainleader
(gutter)orrainshieldwillbenecessary.
o Drainage:Yourheatpumpmayproduceabundantcondensationundercertain
conditions;thisisconsiderednormaloperation. Accordingly,keepthedrain
holesatthebaseoftheheatpumpfreeofgrass,weeds,dirt,orotherobstructions,
allowingforfreeandcompletedrainagearoundtheheater. (Also see, on previous
page: CONTINUOUS USAGE AND WATER AROUND UNIT.)
o Ifyourunitislocatedundertreeswhereleavesfallandaccumulateinthebottom
oftheheatpump,aqualifiedtechnicianshouldperiodicallyremoveaccumulated
leaves.

MAINTAINING PROPER WATER FLOW
o Itisimportanttooperateandmaintainyourfilteraccordingtothemanufacturer’s
specifications. Asafiltergetsdirty,thewaterflowtotheheatpumpisreduced.
Thehigherthepressureonthefiltergauge,thelowertheflowrate.
o Similartoadirtyfilter,largeamountsofdebrisinthepumpbasketcanreduce
waterflow…Keepbasketfreeofdebris.
o Checkforimpropervalvesettings. Apartiallyclosedvalveafterthefilter,ora
full-openbypassaroundtheheater,willcauseinsufficientwaterflowthroughthe
heater.
o Iftheconditionslistedaboveremainunresolved,thewaterflowthroughthe
heatermaybereducedtoapointwhereinternalsafetydevicesshuttheheateroff.
Forexample,shouldan“HP”or“Flo”codebeobservedonthedisplay–either
willpreventtheheaterfromoperating–insufficientwaterflowcouldbethecause.
Beforecallingforservice,alwayscheckthefilter,thepumpbasket,andwater
valvepositions. Iftheproblempersists,callAquaCalCustomerSupportat:
1-800-786-7751.
o NOTE: Duringpoolrefinishingoracidwashing,thewaterflowthroughthepool
heatermustbeshutoffuntiltheprocessiscompleted,andthepoolchemistryis
onceagaininbalance.
MAINTAINING PROPER CLEARANCES AROUND HEATER
o Formaximumefficiency,properairflowclearancesaroundheatermustbe
maintained.
o Itisimportanttokeeptheareaaroundyourheatpumpclearofitemssuchas
shrubsandbushes,lawnfurniture,chemicalscontainers,etc. Theseitemscan
preventairfromcirculatingproperlythroughtheheater,andwillresultin
inefficientoperationordamagetocomponentsinsidetheheatpump.Donot
placeobjectsontopoftheheatpump;doingsowillblocktheairfromexiting
the heater,andwillresultindamagetothecompressorandfanmotor.
o Properclearancesarealsonecessaryinordertoaccesstheworkingpartsof
yourheater. Aheaterthatiseasyto“getto”,willbeaheaterthatiseasyto
maintain;serviceandmaintenancepersonnelwillthankyouforkeepingthe
areaaroundyourheaterunobstructed.
o Pleaseseethenexttwopagesforrecommendedclearances.

1. Disconnectallelectricalpowertotheheater;turnOFFcirculatingpump.
2. Atthetwo(2)connectionunions,disconnecttheplumbingtotheheater
(removaliscounter-clockwise).
3. RemovethefrontplasticpanelbyremovingthescrewsshowninFigure-1.
4. Locatethedrainplugatbaseofthetitaniumcondenserandremove(removalis
counter-clockwise).SeeFigure-2.

Failuretoheedthefollowingcanresultin

Failuretoproperlywinterizeunitmayresultinfreezedamagetotheheat

clockwise,replacetheplugfinger-tight.
6. Reinstalltheheaterfrontcoverandsecurewithattachingscrewspreviously
removed.
7. Topreventinsectsandverminfromenteringtheplumbingduringthe
winterizedperiod,partiallyreconnectthetwo(2)plumbingconnectionunions:
coupleeachuniononeortwothreads;thiswillpermitcondensationtodrain,
butwillpreventmostinsectsandanimalsfromenteringtheplumbingcircuit.
8. NextSeason:toreadytheheatpumpforuse,simplyre-tightenplumbing
connectionunions. Hand-tightisgenerallysufficient.

6. Topreventinsectsandverminfromenteringtheplumbingduringthe
winterizedperiod,partiallyreconnectthetwo(2)plumbingconnectionunions:
coupleeachuniononeortwothreads;thiswillpermitcondensationtodrain,
butwillpreventmostinsectsandanimalsfromenteringtheplumbingcircuit.
7. NextSeason:toreadytheheatpumpforuse,simplyre-tightenplumbing
connectionunions. Hand-tightisgenerallysufficient.

TROUBLESHOOTING
HEAT PUMP NOT RUNNING
o Isthedisplaylit? Ifnot,ensurethemainbreaker(located at the power supply
panel) andthedisconnectswitch(located near the heat pump) arebothturnedON.
o Doesthedisplayread“Flo”? Ifso,checktobesurethatthecirculatingpumpis
operatingandthefilterisclean. Theremayalsobeavalvepositionedincorrectly
allowingwatertoby-passtheheatpump;besurewaterisflowingthroughthe
heater.
o Doesthedisplayread“OFF”? Ifsothedesiredwatertemperatureissetbelow
60°F. Raisethedesiredwatertemperatureabovetheactualwatertemperatureand
theunitshouldstartaftera3-to-4minutedelay.
Ifthedisplayisshowinganyotherfaultcodes,orisblank,contactAquaCalat
800-786-7751. Servicemayberequired.
HEAT PUMP RUNNING BUT NOT HEATING
o Istheairblowingoutofthetopoftheunitnoticeablycoolerthanthesurrounding
air? (A 9°F to 12°F difference is typical.) Ifnot,callAquaCalforserviceat
800-786-7751.
o Besureallaircoilsurfacesarefreefromobstructions;lowroofoverhangs,
landscaping,walls,fences,etc. Theheatpumpneedsgoodairflowtooperateat
peakefficiency.
o Howlongareyourunningyourcirculatingpumpeachday? Coolerweather
conditions,orheatingtoahighertemperature,maynecessitaterunningtheheat
pumpforalongerperiodoftime. Apoolblanketcanbeusefulinpermitting
shorterruntimes,inturnleadingtosubstantialenergycostsavings.
o Whatistheairtemperature? Yourheatpumpmaybeinthedefrostmodeifair
temperaturesarebelow50°F. Thedigitaldisplaywillread“FS”iftheunitis
defrostingorairtemperaturesaretoocold.

WATER LEAKING OUT OF THE HEAT PUMP
(Is it a leak or just condensation from normal operation? Here’s how to find out).
o Shutoffyourheatpump,leavingthepoolpumprunning. Inacoupleofhours
thereshouldbeamarkedreductionintheamountofwateraroundthebottomof
theheatpump.
o Or,asanalternatemethodtocheckforawaterleak,youcantestthewater
drainingoutthebaseforthepresenceofthesanitizeryouareusinginyourpool
orspa. Useyourwatertestkit,orateststrip,tocheckasampleofthewaterfor
chlorineorbromine. Ifthesampletestspositiveforsanitizer,callAquaCalfor
serviceat:800-786-7751. Ifthetestisnegative,thewaterisprobablyharmless
condensate.
