The heart of your heat
pump is the patented
ThermoLink heat ex-
changer. The primary
cause of premature heat
pumpdemise is the failure
of the heat exchanger.
Ordinary heat exchangers
are made from a cupron-
ickel alloy. This cupron-
ickel material is suscep-
tible to attack from the
sanitizersusedinpools and
spas, and from other re-
latedwater chemistry con-
ditions. Once the heat ex-
changer fails, the heat
pump is ruined. The

Icebreaker Heat Pump
Heat & Cool Capability
Puts you in full control, year round ...Warms your pool or spa with the reliability and efficiency of our other heat
pumps, but, with the flip of a switch, can also cool your pool or spa to refreshing temperatures during the hot
summer months. For cooler climates, Icebreaker heat pumps offer unique advantages over passive defrost
models. Please read more below... Hot Gas, Icebreaker Defrost
Your Icebreaker heat pump is uniquely equipped for active defrost. Active defrost involves directing hot refrig-
erant gas to the heat collector, melting accumulated ice away in a matter of a few minutes—then right back to
heating. Standard heat pumps may remain “off in defrost” for extended periods during very cold weather.
Because of its ability to continue to operate even during freezing weather, your Icebreaker extends the swim-
ming season longer than any other heat pump.
Scroll Compressor
50% fewer moving parts than standard piston-type compressors. This equates to much improved reliability and
improved efficiency. Scroll compressors are also much quieter in operation than piston-type compressors.

Setting the Temperature Controls - Pool or Spa
1. Turnthe selectedpoolorspathermostatdial clockwise to its highestsetting.
2. The heat pump will startand begin to warm the poolor spa.
NOTE:The heatpumputilizes ashort-cycle timedelaydevice. If heatpump does not
start,wait five(5) minutes;thetime delaymaybe preventingthe heatpumpfrom starting.
3. Initially,thetypicalspamay take several hours to heat, while apoolmaytakeseveraldays. Heating
timewill depend onthevolumeof water,beginningwatertemperature, and theweatherconditionsat
the time of start-up. (Also see Table of Contents item: Calculating Initial Heating Time.)
4.When the pool or spa reaches the desired temperature, slowly rotate the thermostat knob
counterclockwiseuntil theheatpump(just) stops. The thermostatisnowpositioned toautomatically
maintainthesettemperature.
HEATING-QUICK START & STOP
SwitchingControls from PooltoSpa
NOTE: Itis best to stop the water pump while repositioning valves.
1. Open spavalves and closepool valves.
2. Withthespa watercirculation pumpoperatingfor atleast fiveminutes,movethe POOL/OFF/SPA
toggleswitch from the POOLsettingto the SPAsetting.
3. Turnthe Spathermostat fullyclockwise (104ºF). Heat pumpshould start(alsosee timedelay note,
above).
4. Initially, thetypicalspa maytakeseveral hourstoheat. Heatingtime willdependon thevolumeof
water,beginning watertemperature,andtheweatherconditionsat the time of start-up.
5. When the spareaches the desiredtemperature (104º F ismaximum), slowlyrotate the SPA
thermostatknob counterclockwise until the heat pump (just)stops.Thespathermostatisnow
positionedtoautomaticallymaintainthesettemperature.
StartUp
1. Withwater pump OFF, positionwater valvesto heatthe POOLor SPA.
2. Set water pump controls toallowfortemporary,continuousoperation.
3. Rotate both thermostatscounterclockwisetolowesttemperaturesettings.
4. Depending on valve settings(per #1, above),position the POOL/OFF/SPAtoggleswitch topoint at
eitherthePOOLorSPAthermostat knob. Set HEAT/COOLtoggle switch to HEATposition.
5. Ensure power is supplied to the heater, then start the water pump; the POWER and FLOWlights
shouldnowbothbelit. Permitthewaterpumptooperatefor five (5) minutes before proceeding.
To Stop the Heat Pump
Theheatpumpcanbestoppedbyinterruptingtheelectricalpowersupply,orbysettingthedesiredtemperature
lowerthan theactualwater temperature. However,please note,ifelectricalpower andwaterflow arepresent
totheheatpump,andthewatertemperature fallsbelow60ºF(with thermostatsettominimum),theheatpump
willoperatetomaintainthe water temperature at 60ºF.
TimeClockProgramming
Once the heat pump has brought the pool or spa up to temperature, it will be necessary to reset the
pumprun-timecontrols. Besuretoallowenoughrunningtimefortheheatpumptoreplacelostheat.
Requiredruntime will vary depending upon thetime of year. Coldermonths require longer running
times–generallyeighttotwelvehours/day.
Thisbriefinformationisprovidedasanaidetoinstallers,servicepersonnel,andowners. Theintentofthis
sectionis toproviderapid accessto(only)very basicoperationalinformation. Individuals whowillbe

Indoorinstallationscanbeproblematic,andforthatreasonarediscouraged. However,ifnoviablealternative
exists,indoorinstallationsmaybesuccessfully accomplished provided very exacting criteria is addressed.
Everyindoor installation is unique; therefore, there are no specificguidelinesforthistypeofinstallation. If

Service and Operational Clearances:
♦To operate correctly, heat pumps requirelargevolumes of airmovingovertheheatcollector. Allow
adequateclearancebetweenthe heat pump and walls, fences, shrubs,or other objects. Referto
recommendedclearance drawingsbelow.
♦Allowfive (5) feetofverticalclearancebetweenthe top oftheheatpumpandany roof overhangorother
obstruction. Thisclearance prevents colddischargeairfrom recirculating backintotheheatpump
(recirculationwould reducetheoverallperformance oftheheatpump).
♦Theaccess panelrequiresremovalduringinstallation andservice. Donotplaceplumbing, or other
items,closer than 30” from the front of the heater.

Equipment Pad Requirements:
Theequipmentpadshouldbe constructed of concrete, pressure treated wood,or other material intended
forthe use. The padshall beelevated andplaced toprovide adequatedrainage andsupport tothe baseof
theheat pump. The pad should be essentially level withjustenoughpitchtodraincondensateand any other
waterawayfromtheheater. In addition, the pad shall extend–in all directions–(at least) 3" beyond the base
ofthe heat pump. Under no circumstances shall the heater be installeddirectlyontotheearth.
Irrigation, Rainwater Runoff, and Landscape Features:
Placetheheat pump away from direct rain runofffromroofs. Agutterorrainshieldmayberequiredonthe
roofedgeabovethe heat pump. Relocate or adjust irrigationto avoid water spray directly ontothe heat
pump. Donotlocatetheheatpump directly adjacent to plants, shrubs, or bushes. Doingso will prevent
properair circulation into the unit, andmayinhibitaccesstotheheaterwhen service is needed. Consult
drawingson previous page(Recommended InstallationClearances) for properspacingto other objects.
Anchoring Heater to Pad:
Followallrelevantlocal, state,ornational requirementsregardingwind loadanchoring. Whenanchoring is
required,useAquaCal optionalHurricaneAnchoringKit,PN: STK0001. AquaCal anchoring kitssatisfy,
completely,theverystringentFlorida BuildingCodeSection 301.13windanchoringrequirements. As
necessary,contactAquaCalTechnicalSupport(800-786-7751)forassistanceindeterminingbestmethod
ofcompliance. Plumbing Requirements
Overview:
Whenplanningplumbingsystemlayout,referencetheplumbingschematicsfollowingthissectionasaguideto
thesequence of equipment,valves, fittings,etc. The plumbingconfigurationsfor typical installationsare
diagrammed. Inoperation, itisimperativethe heatpumpreceivewater flowwithintheminimum-maximum
rangesspecified for theparticularheatpump. Shouldthe system installationunderconsiderationnotclosely
matchanyoftheschematics,contactAquaCalTechnicalSupportforadviceandguidance:[phone].
Minimum/Maximum Water Flow Rates:
AllHeatWave andAeroTemp models are designedto operatesuccessfully between flowrates of 20-to-70
gallons-per-minute(GPM). Designtheplumbingsystemtomaintainatleast20-GPMflowthroughtheheater;
theheat pumpwillnotoperate correctly, norreliably,withless than20-GPMofwater flowsupplied. Ifwater
flowratesthrough the heater will exceed70-GPM, a 5-lb spring-checkbypass valve (AquaCal P.N.:2556)
willberequired;generallyspeaking,mostresidentialpoolsandspaswillnotrequireabypassunlessapumpof
two(2) horsepower or larger is used (for bypass valve placement details, see plumbingschematiccontained
onnextpage:“…FlowGreaterthan70-GPM”).
Parts and Materials:
Industrytechnology changes muchtoorapidlyforAquaCaltospecify, withexactness,anyitemsoutside and
beyondthe heatpump. Whatisspecifiedis thattheheatermust be installedinaccordancewith all applicable
local,state,or national codes & standards.
Water Connections to Heat Pump:
AllHeatWaveandAeroTempheatpumps are supplied with 2" PVCplumbingunions. Connectiontosite
plumbingismadeviaPVCsolventcementtothefemaleslipsocketoftheplumbingunions.
Maintain Ability to Winterize:
Inregionswherehardwintersaretypical,theunionsmentionedaboveallowforeasydisconnection/reconnection
oftheheaterfrom/totheplumbingsystem. Caution:Donotdefeatthefunctionoftheunions–useno glueonthe
threadedportion of theunions.

2. EstablishWaterFlowandElectricalPowertotheHeatPump:
♦Withcirculator pump off,position thewater valves to heat or cool eitherthe pool or the spa. If
systemisequippedwithanexternalpump/valve/heatercontroller,simplyusecontrollertoposition
valvesto pool or spasetting, and tostart theappropriate water pump.
♦Ensureanyheatpump-relateddisconnect switches, or circuit breakers, are switchedto the ON
position.
♦Ifnotalready operating, start the poolor spa pump (dependingof which body ofwater is tobe
heatedorcooled),permittingthepumpto operate for a few minutes before going onto next step.
Thiswait is necessarytoclearanyair that may existinthewaterpiping.
♦Theheat pumpwillnotstart without electricalpowerandwater flowingthroughit. Atthis point, the
powerlightandflowlightsshouldbeilluminated.
Initial Start-Up and Basic Operation

POOL/OFF/SPA (P/O/S) Toggle Switch and Sequence of Operation
Withthe toggle switch in the OFF (O) position, the heater will be prevented fromoperating(however,there
maybepowertotheunit;see"PowerLightOn",below). WiththetoggleswitchpositionedtowardtheSPA
or POOLthermostat knob, with HEATselected, and with the following conditions met: 1) water pump in
operation,withwaterflowingthroughtheheater,and,2)electricalpowertotheheater,theheaterwillrunifthe
water temperature drops below the thermostat setting. If COOL is selected, the heater will operate if the
watertemperaturerisesabovethethermostatsetpoint.
Overview of Controls

Power Light On
Indicateselectricalpowerissuppliedtothe heater. Theheat pump will start if the selected(POOLor
SPA) thermostat calls for heating or cooling, and there is proper waterflowthroughtheheater.
Power Light Off
Indicatesproperelectricalpowerisnotsuppliedtotheheater. If attempting to operate the heater,ensure
allheater-relateddisconnectswitchesand/orcircuitbreakersareswitchedtotheONposition.
Flow Light On
Indicatessufficient water flow to permit the heater to operate. The heatpumpwillstartuponacall for
heatingorcooling.
1. SetP/O/SToggleSwitch toOFF—LowerorRaise ThermostatSettings:
♦PositionthePOOL/OFF/SPAtoggleswitchto"OFF".
♦IfpreparingtoHEAT,turnboththermostatknobscounterclockwisetolowestsettings. Ifpreparingto
COOL,turnboththermostatknobsclockwiseto highest settings.
Withproperwaterflowandelectricalpowersuppliedtotheheater,andeitherthePOOLorSPAthermostat
selectedandsetto minimum,theheater willoperateifthewatertemperaturefallsbelow 60ºF. Likewise,
ifmodeisset toCOOL,with thermostatssettomaximum,and intheunlikely eventthewater temperature
rises above 104º F, the heat pump will operate to cool the water to a point below 104º F. If heat pump
operationisabsolutelynotdesired,positionthePOOL/OFF/SPAtoggleswitchtothemiddle,OFFposition.

3. SelectPOOLorSPA&HEATorCOOL, RaiseorLowerAssociatedThermostat:
♦Positionthe POOL/OFF/SPAtoggletowards the POOLor SPAthermostatknob (depending on
whichbodyof water you arepreparing to heator cool).
♦ForHeating,moveHEAT/COOLtoggleto HEAT, then turn the selected pool or spa thermostat dial
clockwisetoitshighest setting. As soon as the thermostat setting is above the temperature of the
water,the heat pumpwill begin tooperate. See note belowif heater doesnot start
immediately.
♦ForCooling,moveHEAT/COOLtoggle to COOL, then turn theselected pool or spathermostat
dialcounterclockwisetoits lowest setting. As soon as the thermostat setting is below the tempera-
tureof the water,the heatpump will beginto operate. See notebelow ifheater does notstart
immediately.
Note- Heater Controls Contain a Solid-StateTime Delay Module
Thistime delay featureprevents damage to thecompressor should electrical powerbe re-
peatedlyinterrupted,orif theheatpumpwereto comeunderanyothercircumstancesleading
toan on-off-on-off cycling condition. If the heater has water flow and electrical power sup-
plied,but the heater does not immediately start upon turningthethermostattoitshighest(or
forcooling,lowest)setting,waitfive(5)minutes;thetimedelaymodulemaybepreventingthe
heaterfrom operating. Likewise,oncetheheater is operating,ifthethermostat is turnedpast
thepresentwatertemperature,theheatpumpwill shut off. Subsequently, the heatercannot
restartfor approximately five (5)minutes–nomatterhowfar the thermostat isrotated.
4. EnsureUninterruptedPumpOperationDuringInitialWarm-UporCool-DownPeriod:
♦Permitpool or spacirculatorpumpto run continuouslyuntilthedesiredwater temperature is
reached(withapool,thismay take several days).
♦Continuouspumpoperationwilllikelyrequiretemporarilyresetting(orremovingcompletely)the
tripperson thetimeclock,thusallowing nonstopoperation. Whenanexternalelectronic controller
operatespumps andvalves,followthe controllermanufacturer'sinstructions to ensuretemporary,
uninterruptedpumpoperation.
♦Throughoutthewarm-up or cool-down period,keep the selectedpool or spathermostat dial setto
itsmaximumheatingorcoolingposition.
5. DesiredWaterTemperatureReached–SetThermostat toMaintain:
♦IfHeating,once the desired water temperaturehas been achieved, rotatethe thermostat knob very
slowlycounterclockwiseuntiltheunit(just)shutsoff.
♦IfCooling,once the desired water temperaturehas been achieved, rotatethe thermostat knob very
slowlyclockwiseuntiltheunit(just)shutsoff.
♦Theheater willautomaticallymaintainthe pool orspaatthe selectedtemperature.
6. ReturnPumpTimer ControlstoNormalSettings:
♦Resetpump timercontrolsfornormal dailyhoursofoperation.
♦Duringcooler or cold weather conditions, it may becomenecessarytoextendthedailyhoursof
pumpoperation; doing so will help the heater to keep upwithincreasedheatlosses. Extending
pumpoperationhoursforcooling isnotgenerally required.

Asolarblanketwillsignificantlyreduceyourheatingbills. Checkwiththeinstallingdealertoseeifyourheat
pumpwassizedtobeusedinconjunctionwith,orwithoutasolarblanket. Blanketedpoolswilltypicallylose
only3 - 4° of heat pernightversus8-10°overnight with an un-blanketed pool. Reductionsof40-60%on
heatingbillscanbeachieved byusingsolar blankets.
Pool/Spa Blankets
Improperlyused, Pool-Spa solarblankets canbecome adrowning riskto peopleand pets. Solar
blankets are not safety covers. They are not designed to support the weight of a person or pet.
Never enter a pool until the solar cover is completely removed (under no circumstances should
anyoneswimundertheblanket). Follow allsafetyrecommendations oftheblanketmanufacturer.
Failuretoheedthefollowingmayresultinpermanentinjury or
death.
WARNING!
Pool and Spa Combination Heating
Everythingstatedforheatingapoolappliesforheatingaspa;onlythevolumeofwaterbeingheatedisdifferent.
HeatWaveandAeroTempmodelheat pumpscomeequipped withtwothermostats. Onethermostatisforthe
poolandtheotherisforthespa. Simplypositionthe poolandspaisolationvalvesasdirectedbyyourinstaller;
select the appropriate thermostat (pool or spa), whichever you are heating, and with electrical power and
waterflow supplied to the heater,thewaterwill be maintained at set point.
Your system can be automated with the addition of an optional AquaCal Universal Heater Controller
(AquaCalpart #0097TS). Using this option will saveyoufromhavingtochangethe thermostat switch each
timeyou change from pool to spa and back again. For details, contact your installing dealer.
Spa Heating & Spa Setback Option
Airblowingintoyourspawhileitisbeingheatedwillveryoftenneutralizeorpartiallycounteracttheheatbeing
put into the spa by the heater; this added heat loss equates to increased time to bring your spa to desired
temperature. Whenheating a spa, be sure toturn offthe air blower. Airinduced through thespa jets should
alsobeeliminated,duringwarm-up,wheneverpossible.
Ifyour heater is being usedto onlyheataspa,thePOOL thermostat canbetusedasasetbackcontrol: simply
setthe pool controlat apoint 10-15ºF belowdesired spaheat temperature,and selectthepool thermostat.
Thismethod allows the spa–whennot in use–to beheld at aheated temperature,but somewhat lowerthan
normal spa-use temperature. One would want to blanket the spa if using this setback method. Using spa
setbackwill result in reduced warm up periods over full-cold startups.
Heating in Cooler Weather (Defrost Cycle)
Whenair temperatures drop below 50ºF, ice or frostmaybegintoformonthe surface of the evaporator(the
evaporatorbeing the black,vertically-finnedcomponentthatmakesup three (3)sidesoftheheatpump). Ice
andfrost formation is a normal aspect of heatpumpoperationduringcoldweather. Before largeareas ofthe
evaporatorcan becomedisabledbyice orfrost,a defrost cycleisinitiated byasensoron theevaporator. Heat
Wave andAeroTemp Icebreakermodels incorporate anactive, hot-gas defrost system. Duringvery cold
weather,Icebreakerheatpumps may defrostasoftenasevery 50-minutes. The maximum lengthoftimethe
heatpumpwillbe in the defrost mode is ten(10) minutes/hour. Whiledefrosting, steam maybe seen rising
fromtheheat pump; this is normal.(For service personnel, a moredetailed explanation of thedefrost cycle
appearsintheTroubleshootingsectionofthismanual.)
Latenightand early morning, generallybeing the coolesttimes of theday, areleast efficientfor heat pump
operation. Theneed to defrostisavery good reasonwhy heatpumpsshouldbe timed tooperateonlyduring
thewarmest, daylightportionsoftheday.
