Operation and Maintenance
Introduction
The Aries Electric Wolverine is a wheeled, self-propelled cutter tractor made for reinstalling
junctions or cutting out infiltrations found in the pipe. The Wolverine cutter tractor operates in
pipes sizes between 6 and 18 inches in diameter. The cutter tractor operates best in a prepared
pipeline. The Wolverine is driven by two axles, using 48V motors. The cutter tractor operates
using the Aries truck-mounted, mainline systems CC1750 control system and PR1750 Electric
Wolverine reel. Optimum cutter tractor operation requires proper electrical connections to the
Electric Wolverine cutter reel and tractor, the correct air pressure, and proper wheel and
extensions arrangements for the pipeline diameter being worked in. The Electric Wolverine
cutter tractor may sometimes be referred to as the CT1750. This manual is designed to assist
personnel when performing tractor configurations, wheel conversions, and maintenance
procedures.

Operation and Maintenance
Safety
Care and precautions are needed when operating any electrical components in wet and
confined spaces.
Electric Wolverine Equipment Safety
1. Read and understand the supplied instructions before operating equipment.
2. The CT1750 Electric Wolverine cutter tractor is equipped with powerful cutting motor
arms that can pinch, causing injury to fingers or extremities.
3. To prevent personal injury or damage to equipment, turn off and disconnect all power
when making adjustments or performing maintenance.
4. Inspect cables before and after each use. Replace or repair any damaged cables.
5. Before connecting or disconnecting cables, verify all system power is off.
6. Lift cutter tractor solely with lift strap. Use main reel cable to guide tractor in and out of
the manholes. Do not lift cutter tractor by power cords, hoses, lift arms, or top clamp.
7. Do not use in hazardous or explosive atmospheres.
8. Do not submerge the cutter for prolonged periods. It is water resistant, NOT waterproof.
9. Do not drop the cutter tractor assembly.
Pipeline and Manhole Safety
1. Use the appropriate safety equipment and clothing - goggles, gloves, boots,
masks respirators, traffic signs, and cones - when working in confined spaces.
2. Follow all appropriate laws, regulations and guidelines for working in confined spaces.
3. Pipeline conditions are an important factor in life expectancy of your equipment.
Protruding taps, corroded or clogged lines, large offsets, and short sags in pipe make
travel difficult. Proceed carefully in those conditions.
Always use a lifting hook when lowering or raising the Electric Wolverine cutter tractor with a
retrieval pole assembly.
NOTES: Item 2 is not used on Electric Wolverine cutter tractors.

Operation and Maintenance
Truck System Interface
For first time users, use the Wolverine Quick Start Guide Manual (P N 970245) for operation
setup. The quick start guide was created to help direct users on how to set up the Wolverine
system correctly via step by step instructions and pictures.
Cable Connections
The Electric Wolverine cutter tractor requires three electrical cables and three hose
connections for full functionality. These inner connect points are located between the reel
cable termination and the Wolverine cutter tractor tip-up assembly. The three inner connect
cables are a two pin cable (P N 380112), a nineteen pin cable (P N 380113), and an eight coil
cable (P N 380380). The inner connect hoses are a small, blue air hose (P N 381053), a small,
black water hose (P N 381052), and a small, blue hose (P N 381015). These inner connect
points must be securely fastened and undamaged for full functionality. The strain relief from
the reel termination needs to be connected to the clevises (P N 380090) on the cutter tractor
tip-up to protect these inner connect points from damage before using the Electric Wolverine
cutter tractor.
If operations from the drive motors, the cutter tractor functions, or the cutter tractor camera
do not respond or respond faintly, troubleshoot the problem by using the inner connect cables
with the faceplate on the CC1750. The CC1750 control unit has a large nineteen pin socket and
a small two pin socket located on its faceplate. The nineteen pin socket is to test the cutter
tractor and cutter tractor camera (P N 380353). The two pin socket is to test the drive motors
(Front P N 380360 Rear P N 380350).
If the problems go away in testing the inner connect cables with the cutter tractor and camera
on the CC1750 control unit’s faceplate, the reel can be identified as the problem. See
Wolverine Electric Reel Cable for more information. If problems persist with the cutter tractor
or camera when using the inner connect cables with the faceplate, then the Electric Wolverine
reel and cable can be eliminated as the source of the issue.
Next, use the test cables to connect the cutter tractor and camera to the CC1750 faceplate. If
the problems do not go away when using the test cables with the cutter tractor or camera, then
the tractor and camera have been identified as the problem. Return the equipment to an Aries
facility for repair. See the Returning Equipment section. If the problems do go away when
using the test cables with the cutter tractor and camera, then the cable must be replaced. See
the Ordering Equipment section.

Wolverine Electric Reel Cable
The electric reel cable (P N 380693) is a two part hose that supplies the air and electrical signals
to the Wolverine cutter tractor. The max length available for the Electric reel cable is 120
meters, or approximately 390 feet.
From the Cable Connections section, if the reel was identified as the problem when testing the
inner connect cables with the cutter tractor and camera on the CC1750 control unit’s faceplate,
the wiring schematic for the slip ring may be needed.
If the wiring schematic was lost or destroyed, the customer can request to have one emailed to
them from an Aries facility. The customer will need to know the slip ring number before
contacting an Aries customer service or repair technician for a wiring schematic. The slip ring
number can be located on a yellow tag under the maintenance panel on the reel. The
maintenance panel is located on the right side of the reel, looking into the truck from the rear
of the vehicle.
The following assumes the wiring schematic has been obtained and the customer is trained to
repair an Electric Wolverine reel themselves. Open the maintenance panel on the reel. The
maintenance panel is located on the right side of the reel, looking into the truck from the rear
of the vehicle. Test the wires in the terminal strip that feed into the slip ring, versus the
connections on the end of the cable termination to find which wires have failed. Make note of
this. The cable and slip ring can now be tested individually. Test the cable by removing it from
the reel and testing the cable plug to the end of the termination. If those same wires show
failure, the cable can be identified as the problem. If not, test the terminal strip to the slip ring
plug. If those same wires show failure, the slip ring can be identified as the problem.
If the slip ring has been identified as the problem, remove the slip ring found under the
maintenance panel. Make sure to have the drum propped up before removing the slip ring or
the drum will fall. Order a new slip ring (P N 380691). If the full slip ring assembly is needed,
order P N 380372. See the Ordering Equipment section on how to order parts for the slip ring.
If the cable has failed, the most likely spot would be where the cable meets the termination.
This means the termination will need to be cut off the end of the cable. New termination parts
will be needed (see the Ordering Equipment section on how to order new termination parts).
Before cutting off the termination, move the black anti-kink sleeve (P N 380087) away from the
termination. Do this by disconnecting the termination, cleaning the hose behind it, and lubing
the hose with WD40 or similar. When cutting off the termination, a minimum of 2 meters, or 6
feet, should be removed to ensure the broken wire was removed. Test the previously failed
wires from where the termination was cut off to ensure a clean wire path is made between the

end of the cable (slip ring side) and the wires. If the wire path is still broken, remove another 3
feet. Continue this process until the wire path is clear, or order a new cable (P N 380693).
If the customer has not been trained to do a repair or wishes not to do the repair themselves,
see the Returning Equipment section for information on sending the truck in for repair.
Equipment Selection Switch
The Electric Wolverine cutter tractor equipment selection switch can be found on the rack
panel of the CC1750. The detection switch must be on large robot. Air must also be supplied to
the reel from the control panel.
See the Wolverine Quick Start Guide (P N 970245) for pictures and step by step instructions of
how to turn on the Electric Wolverine system and what the correct settings are. Operation of
the Electric Wolverine cutter tractor can also be found in the Wolverine Quick Start Guide (P N
970245) or in the Operation section of this manual.
Components
The components section is to list the standard equipment that come with the Electric
Wolverine cutter tractor, along with options available for the Electric Wolverine cutter tractor.
Standard
A standard Electric Wolverine cutter is factory configured with four 6” Pipe tires (P N 380111).
Use these tires with the DN150 6” Pipe ID Top Clamp Kit (P N 380658) when inspecting non-
relined 6” pipes. The Electric Wolverine cutter tractor uses clevises instead of the traditional
tow cables. There will be two clevises (P N 380090) supplied with the cutter tractor.
The standard Electric Wolverine cutter tractor comes with the LED Camera Kit (P N 380001),
Carbide and Rubber Wheel Set (P N 380204), an electric motor (P N 380290), a case assembly
(P N 460132), a wooden box with foam (P N 460161), a spare parts kit (P N 950637), and a
manuals (P N 970209).
The standard Electric Wolverine cutter tractor and manual are all packaged and shipped in a
wooden box (P N 460161), designed to withstand rugged treatment. Aries recommends using
the box to store the Electric Wolverine when not in use. The shipping box should also be used if
it is ever necessary to return the Electric Wolverine cutter tractor to Aries for repair.

Options
The large line kit is considered optional equipment. The large line kit consists of two P N
380123 and two P N 380524, which are used for 15 to 18 inch pipe. The large line kit should be
paired with Top Clamp Kit P N 380655 and the 5” wheels (Rubber P N 380196 Carbide P N
380195).
When the standard four 6” Pipe ID tires (P N 380111) that are furnished with the standard
Electric Wolverine cutter tractor are removed, the Electric Wolverine cutter tractor can be
configured to accept the large line kit. The large line kit improves cutter reach and camera
performance in pipeline diameters of 15 to 18 inches.
Before beginning the configuration process, assemble all parts and tools.
Place a spacer underneath the body, between the axles to allow access to the underbelly of the
cutter tractor. Remove all four wheels with a 4mm T-handle Hex (P N 380199). Hold on to the
washers and screws removed. Pick an axle and place one large line wheel extension (P N
380123) on one side of the tractor and the other large line wheel extension (P N 380524) on
the other side of the tractor. Rotate the axles back and forth by hand to engage the Reuleaux
Triangle axles on the cutter tractor with the Reuleaux Triangle sockets on the large line
extensions. Secure with a M6 x 16mm socket head bolt underneath the cutter tractor, where
the two large line extension halves meet. It does not matter which side is chosen first with
which large line extensions; they are symmetrical, so they can run in either direction. Follow
the same instructions for the second axle. The wheels can now be attached to the large line
wheel extensions using the same washers (P N 380186) and screws (P N 104127) removed
earlier.
Remove any Top Clamp piece currently attached to the cutter tractor. Install the Top Clamp Kit
appropriate for the diameter pipe being worked on. 15” to 18” pipe diameters should use Top
Clamp Kit P N 380655.
Install the DN400 15” Pipe ID Top Clamp Kit (P N 380655) by installing the Top Clamp spacer
(P N 380107) first. The Top Clamp rollers (P N 380102) can be installed on the Top Clamp strut
guide (P N 380109) before mounting the Top Clamp strut guide (P N 380109) to the Top Clamp
spacer (P N 380107).

Width/Height Conversion
The Electric Wolverine cutter is factory configured with four 6” Pipe ID tires (P N 380111). Use
these tires with the DN150 6” Pipe ID Top Clamp Kit (P N 380658) when inspecting non-relined
6” pipes. When properly converted, it is capable of operating in pipeline diameters between 6
and 18 inches. With the Large Line Wheel Extensions (P N 380123 and 380524), the Electric
Wolverine can operate in pipelines from 15 to 18 inches. Converting the Electric Wolverine for
best operation in various size lines requires proper configuration of tires, top clamp kits, and
large line wheel extensions. Below is the recommended configuration of tires, top clamp kits,
and large line wheel extensions in a set pipe inner diameter.
rrangements for Various Pipe Diameters
Use the table below for the recommended configuration for the combination of tires, top clamp

Operation and Maintenance
Operation
Operation of the Electric Wolverine system, including the camera, cutter tractor, and reel are
below. The Operation section assumes the user has read the Wolverine Quick Start Guide (P N
970245), has the correct settings, and has turned the system on. As always, verify all
connections are set before operating equipment and personal are at a safe distance away from
all moving parts of the system.
Drive Forward/Drive Backward
There are two joysticks located on the control panel with keyboard. For drive functionality, the
left joystick must be used and the joystick must be completely depressed in the direction
described below for operation. The drive functions are not incremental, and therefore need to
be fully depressed to one side before the Electric Wolverine cutter tractor will respond. To
drive the Electric Wolverine cutter tractor forward, the left joystick needs to be moved to the
left. The cutter tractor can also be driven forward from the hand held device on the reel (see
the Tractor Retrieval section). To drive the Electric Wolverine cutter tractor backwards, the left
joystick needs to be moved to the right. To control speed of the cutter tractor, use the dial
below the keyboard labeled Speed Drive Unit. The reel may retrieve cable as the operator
moves the cutter tractor in reverse in the pipe. It is not unusual for the automated motion
from the reel to stop functioning when the cutting motor has been started.
Cutting Motor Rotate Left/Rotate Right
There are two joysticks located on the control panel with keyboard. For cutting motor rotate
control, the right joystick must be used. Moving the right joystick left and right incrementally
allows for fine control of the rotate speed. The greater the angle from center, the faster the
cutting motor will rotate. The white push button labeled Fast 0 can also be used for faster
rotation. To rotate the cutting motor counter clockwise to the left, incrementally move the
right joystick to the left. To rotate the cutting motor clockwise to the right, incrementally move
the right joystick to the right.
Cutting Motor Lift Up/Lower Down
There are two joysticks located on the control panel with keyboard. For cutting motor lift
functions, the left joystick must be used. Moving the left joystick forward and backward
incrementally allows for fine control of the lift speed. The greater the angle from center, the
faster the cutting motor will lift. To lift the cutting motor up, incrementally move the left
joystick forward. To lower the cutting motor down, incrementally move the left joystick
backward.

4
th
xis Working Head Up/Working Head Down
There are two joysticks located on the control panel with keyboard. For 4
th
axis motion, the
rocker switch located on the right joystick must be used. Switching the rocker switch to the left
and right will move the working head up and down. This switch is not incremental and must be
fully depressed for cutter tractor operation. Pressing the rocker switch left will pull in the 4
th
axis arm, or move the working head up. Pressing the rocker switch right will push out the 4
th
axis arm, or move the working head down.
NOTE: The 4
th
axis arm is not made for adjustments while cutting or use of the arms. The 4
th
axis arm is to allow a desired angle to be adjusted BEFORE cutting. Do not adjust the working
head while pressure is applied to the arms from cutting or other functionality. Failure to do so
can cause a loss of functionality in the arm.
Pipe Clamp Inflate/Deflate
Below the keyboard on the control panel with two joysticks, there is a switch labeled Clamp
Pressure 0 Vacuum. Turning this switch to the left and right will inflate and deflate the top pipe
clamp. Turning the switch to the left will inflate the top pipe clamp. Turning the switch to the
right will deflate the top pipe clamp. Returning the switch to center will cause the clamp to
hold pressure.
NOTE: It is critical to deflate the top pipe clamp before retrieving the cutter tractor to avoid
costly damage. Failure to deflate the top pipe clamp could result in top pipe clamp failure, or
worse, causing the cutter tractor to get stuck in the pipe.
Water Control
There are two joysticks located on the control panel with keyboard. For water control, the
white button located on the left joystick must be used. Pressing the button will send water
onto the camera lens. This button is not incremental and must be fully depressed for cutter
tractor operation.
Camera Rotate Up/Rotate Down
Below the keyboard on the control panel with two joysticks, there is a switch labeled Camera
Turn. Turning this switch to the left will rotate the camera head up. Turning this switch to the
right will rotate the camera head down. Returning the switch to center will stop rotation.

Camera Brightness
Below the keyboard on the control panel with two joysticks, there is a dial labeled Camera
Light. Turning this dial clockwise and counter clockwise will intensify the brightness of the
camera LEDs. Rotate this dial fully clockwise for the brightest LED light, and rotate this dial fully
counter clockwise for the faintest of LED light.
Cutting Motor On/Off
Below the keyboard on the control panel with two joysticks, there is a switch labeled Grinding
Material injection Pressure. Turning this switch to the left will turn the cutting motor on. Re-
centering the switch will turn the cutting motor off.
NOTE: Observe the cutting motor has hit the desired RPM before cutting. Not allowing the
cutting motor to hit the desired RPM could result in the motor reaching its overcurrent limit
and shutting off. If this happens, return the cutting motor switch to center, shutting the motor
off, and then turning the switch back to the left to turn it back on. This will reset the cutting
motor.
Tractor Retrieval
To retrieve the tractor after operation, an operator will need to be positioned at the rear of the
vehicle. This operator will control the speed of retrieval of the reel. There will be a hand held
device located on the front of the cutter reel. This device has a dial to adjust the retrieval
speed of the reel or drive speed of the cutter tractor, along with push buttons to move the reel
in reverse (to spool up cable) or move the cutter tractor forward. The buttons are labeled as
such.
IMPORT NT: The cutter tractor speed control and reel retrieval speed control need to be in-
sync with each other. It is possible to have the cutter tractor speed control and reel retrieval
speed control set incorrectly. If the cutter tractor speed control is set too slow, the reel could
drag the cutter tractor through the pipe. If the reel retrieval is set too slow, the cutter tractor
could end up driving over the cable.
NOTE: The cutter tractor should never be retrieved without an operator at the rear of the
vehicle. This operator is the eyes of this operation. The operator is there to ensure no damage
will occur to the reel, the cable, or the cutter tractor. The cutter tractor should not be lifted by
the reel cable alone. This can cause damage to the termination and to the cutter tractor.

Operation and Maintenance
Maintenance
During normal use, your Aries equipment will periodically require maintenance and adjustment.
Maintenance procedures require attention to detail to protect and maintain system integrity.
It is recommended to spray the cutter down each and every time with a degreaser (i.e. Simple
Green or equivalent) before using the cutter. The degreaser will help keep the grout and resin
materials from sticking to the cutter body, making the cutter much easier to clean after
operation.
C UTION: To prevent personal injury or damage to equipment, turn OFF power to the system
and disconnect equipment from the power cables before performing maintenance. All
connected power cables must be powered off completely to remove power from this unit.
Cleaning/Inspection
The most effective maintenance procedure is a total cleaning and inspection of the Electric
Wolverine cutter tractor, camera, lights, and cable after each use. Cleaning eliminates sewer
residue, harsh chemicals, and resin deposits from drying and interfering with equipment
operation, which can lead to breakdowns or false readings.
Run an adequate flow of low pressure fresh water over equipment. Remove all dirt, sand,
sewer, and resin material with a soft brush. Always clean equipment before performing any
maintenance procedures or before sending in equipment for factory service.
Any maintenance done to the Electric Wolverine cutter tractor will require new O-ring seals.
Do not reuse any O-ring seals after taking apart the equipment. Part numbers for new O-ring
seals on the Electric Wolverine cutter tractor are P Ns 380952 (Main Body), 380953 (Tip-Up),
380950 (Rotate Head), and 380951 (Up-Down Gear Box).
Typical replacement parts over time are O-ring seals, bearings, gears, and fasteners. See the
Returning Equipment section for instructions on how to return equipment for repair, or see the
Ordering Equipment section for instructions on how to order parts for in house repairs.
