IMPORTANT
INFORMATION
DHHS Certification: This Atari SLM605 Laser Printer
has
been certified
as
a Class 1 laser
product under the
U.S
. Department of Health and Human Services' (DHHS) Radiation
Performance Standard established
in
the Radiation Control for Health and Safety Act of
1968
.
This means that the printer does not produce hazardous laser radiation.
Since radiation emitted inside the printer is completely confined within the protective housing
and external covers, the laser beam cannot escape from the machine during any phase of user
operation.
FCC Notice and Warning: The Atari SLM605 Laser Printer uses
and
produces radio-frequency
energy. If not installed
and
operated according
to
the instructions
in
this manual, the
equipment may cause interference with radio communications. This equipment is certified
to
comply with the limits for a Class A computing device, pursuant
to
Subpart J of Part
15
of the
FCC rules. These rules are designed
to
provide reasonable protection from interference when
the equipment is used
in
a commercial setting.
However,
there is no guarantee that
interference will not occur in a particular installation. Operation of this equipment
in
a
residential area
is
likely
to
cause such interference, and the
user,
at
his or her
own
expense,
will
be
required to take whatever measures are necessary to correct the interference.
In
satisfaction of Federal Communications regulations, this laser printer includes
an
Atari
shielded cable
to
minimize interference with older electronic devices. Use of this device without
an
Atari shielded cable or its equivalent
is
prohibited. Replacement cables are available
through your Atari dealer.
Please Note: Every effort has been made
to
ensure the accuracy of the product documentation
in this manual.
However,
because Atari Corporation is constantly improving and updating its
computer hardware and software, it
is
unable
to
guarantee the accuracy of printed material
after the date of publication and disclaims liability for changes, errors, or omissions.
Reproduction of all or any portions of this manual is not allowed without the specific written
consent of Atari Corporation.

CHAPTER
1:
THE
SLM605
LASER PRINTER
Your SLM605 Laser Printer has been designed to work with Atari ST"',
STETM
and TT"' computers. The SLM605's small footprint, low noise level and 300
DPI resolution make it ideal for the office, the home, or the studio.
We
suggest that you read this manual completely before using your new printer.
With proper use and maintenance, your SLM605 will provide you with years
of worry-free operation.
GETTING
STARTED
This chapter explains how to set up your new
ATARI
SLM605 Laser Printer.
Read and follow the instructions carefully. The printer does not come to you
fully assembled; you must install many of its working parts.
If you haven't done so already, unpack the printer following the unpacking
instructions found in the carton.
Choosing
the
Right
Work
Environment
Your new
ATARI
SLM605 Laser Printer is composed of sophisticated and
sensitive electronic, electrophotographic, and mechanical devices. Therefore,
it is imperative that you choose the right working environment for your printer.
Avoid places that would expose the printer to dust, grease, extreme tempera-
tures, direct sunlight, or high humidity. Make sure that the site you choose is
well ventilated. An environment considered suitable for a stereo system or
television should also work well for your laser printer. Always place the printer
on a firm, level surface.
1

Note: For
an
exact specification of ambient environmental conditions,
see Appendix
D:
Specifications. For a listing of additional important
environmental conditions, see Other Precautionary and Preventive
Measures
in
Chapter 3.
Now that you've positioned the printer, it's time to install its parts and
accessories.
Identifying
the
Components

ASSEMBUNG
THE
PRINTER
Now that you've familiarized yourself with the various parts of your new
printer, assembling it will
be
a simple task. Follow the instructions
in
the
order that they are presented.
Cleaning
Pad
Installation
The toner is applied
to
the paper and then fused
to
the paper
as
it runs by
the fuser roller at the back of the printer. The cleaning pad cleans the fuser
roller.
You
must replace the pad every time
you
change the toner.
1. Open the printer and remove the basket.
2.
Holding the cleaning pad by the green felt covered tabs, place it into the
rectangular slot
in
the heater block.
Cleaning
Pad
6

Installing
the
Toner
Cartridge
Toner
is a fine, black powder that is used to form printed characters
on
the
paper. The toner cartridge contains the toner. Toner is held
in
the developing
unit
in
preparation for printing.
When you install the toner cartridge, and whenever you replace toner, avoid
getting the powder
on
your hands and face. Wash your hands thoroughly
after installing the toner cartridge.
Locate the toner cartridge. Shake the developing unit horizontally four or five
times to evenly distribute the toner. Although the toner cartridge has been
factory installed, a clear plastic film prevents the toner from entering the
developing unit.
You
will notice one end of plastic film has been taped to the
top of the cartridge. While holding the toner cartridge securely in place, pull
the plastic film (horizontally) out from beneath the toner cartridge. This will
free the toner, allowing it
to
enter the developing unit.
7

Note: Replace the toner cartridge every 1
,500
pages.
However,
because the developing unit
is
initially empty,
you
will need
to
replace the first cartridge after approximately 750 pages.
For
more
information, see The Control Panel
in
Chapter 2 and Chapter 3:
Regular Maintenance.
Do not touch the magnetic roller.
Installing
the
Drum
Unit
and
the
Developing
Unit
The image to
be
printed is formed
on
the drum by the printer's scanning
laser beam. Toner is then applied to the drum, and the drum applies the
toner
to
the paper. The drum and developing unit are placed togething into
the basket which is
in
turn installed within the printer.
1.
Take
out the new drum unit and carefully clean the charger wire with a
cotton
swab.
Charger Wire

2.
Remove the basket from the printer and place it
on
a flat surface. Next,
place the drum unit and the developing unit into the basket.
~
Note: Install the drum unit first. Lift both sides of the drum unit
by
the plastic handles. The axles
on
the drum unit should slide easily
into the slots
on
the basket handles.
Do
not touch the surface of the drum or the magnet-roller
by
hand.
e Warning: The drum is photosensitive. When installing the drum,
keep
it away from direct sunlight or strong incandescent light. Save
the black bubble wrap that came with the drum unit. Whenever you
remove the drum or change
toner,
drape the sheet
on
top to protect
the drum from excessive exposure to light.

3.
Following the same procedure, install the developing unit into the basket.
Once both units have been installed, open the laser printer and align the
positioning shafts
on
either side of the basket with the base frame.

Unit
4.
Gently push the handles (labeled
green)
on
both sides of the drum unit
onto the hook and latch it securely.
Note: Check the arrow
on
the basket and make sure it
is
aligned with the arrow
on
the
cover.

Now,
install the drum counter. The drum counter is designed
so
that it
may only
be
inserted one
way.
Once installed, close the printer.

Note: Since the drum counter keeps track of the number of copies
that the drum unit has processed, it is important that they
