Overview
System Description
The MicroTorque M screw fastening systems are servo driven microprocessor-controlled precision tools,
based on cutting edge technology. Each tool contains a servo motor, planetary gear, incremental encoder.
The highly integrated control unit MicroTorque was designed for servo control, angle measurement, I/O-
management via serial and PLC interface, and user dialog control as well as parameter settings.
The most significant features of these assembly tools are:
■Simultaneous screw tightening and torque control.
■Freely programmable screw fastening parameters.
■Precise tightening torque, torque monitoring and measurement data documentation.
■Continuous data output for graphical display of torque vs. angle and torque vs. time.
■No clutch for torque setting, therefore no mechanical adjustments.
■Facility for customer-specific assembly programs.
These features make the spindle particularly suitable for highly demanding assembly work and guarantee
exactly controlled tightening torque even under difficult conditions.
The standard screw fastening procedure passes the following steps:
■Search step (before touching the thread)
■Step 1 with angle limitation and torque window
■Step 2 with torque control and angle window
The 3 steps allow completely independent settings of rpm. Search step normally runs at low rpm to find
the thread easily. Step 1 can be run at high rpm for high productivity and short cycle time. At Step 2 rpm is
reduced to avoid exceeded torque.

Installation
Chose a safe place for the installation of the system.
Install the system according to the following instructions.
Installation
1. A safe place should be chosen for the installation of system.
2. The tool driver must be connected to the controller with the tool cable.
3. The controller must be connected to the power supply and the power supply to the mains (230V/50Hz
or 115V/60Hz).
4. The system will initialise. All basic hardware functions are checked and displayed during initialisation.
Also the tool serial number is displayed.
5. After initialisation passed correctly, the system is ready for use.

Maintenance
Preventing ESD problems
The components inside the tool and controller are sensitive to electrostatic discharge. To avoid future mal-
function, make sure that service and maintenance is carried out in an ESD approved work environment.
The figure below shows an example of an appropriate service work station.
Maintenance
There are certain general maintenance procedures you should perform to keep your MicroTorque system
clean and operating at its efficiency.
The system is a sophisticated instrument with many sensitive components.
A built-in service reminder can be configured in Tools Talk MT. When it is time to perform service on the
tool, a reminder is shown on the controller display.
Preventive Maintenance:
■The system should never be exposed to harsh environment with rapid temperature changes or ex-
cessive dust.
■Never expose the system to excessive vibration or high humidity.
■Prevent overheating by use only in the permitted temperature range. Do not cover tool or controller or
power supply.
■Cleaning of the tool and controller should be done regularly, but not with aggressive cleanser.
■Check wear of the bit regularly.

■Replace worn cables immediately.
Tools which have been opened by anyone else than Atlas Copco Industrial Technique AB, will not be ser-
viced.
Calibration and preventive maintenance is recommended at regular intervals once per year or after maxi-
mum 1.000.000 tightenings depending on which occurs sooner.
More frequent overhaul may be needed if the machine is used in heavy-duty operations.
If the machine is not working properly, it should immediately be taken away for inspection.

Service instructions
The information in this chapter is intended to show the main steps to be taken when servicing the tool. For
detailed information on the included parts, see the exploded views/tables.
General information
Recommended interval between actions:
(Valid at normal usage of the tool at a load up to 70% of maximum torque.)
■Exchange front part after approximately 1.000.000 cycles.
■Exchange drive unit after approximately 5.000.000 cycles.
■Calibrate the tool after 1.000.000 cycles or after 1 year.
Service conditions:
■The complete system needs to be available when a repair or calibration is to be done.
Service equipment:
■Normal workshop equipment.
■Necessary special equipment as shown in the exploded views/tables.
■For testing a calibration rig is recommended.
■PC with internet connection to be able to download necessary keys.

Spindle
Dismantling
Notice
■Make sure the spindle is disconnected from the cable before dismantling.
1. ■Hold the spindle using a vise and adjustable spanner.
■Remove the front part using an adjustable spanner.
2. ■Hold the spindle using a vise and assembly/disassembly tool.
■Remove the handle using an adjustable spanner.
3. ■Put the spindle on the work bench, supported by disassembly tool.
■Pry out the pins holding the start and reverse levers using a mandrel.
■Remove the start and reverse levers.
4. ■Disconnect the flat cable from the circuit board.
■Remove the four screws from the holder at the front end of the drive unit using a screwdriver.
■All parts of the front end of the spindle are now accessible.
5. ■Remove the four screws at the cover disc using a screwdriver.
■Remove the two screws at the side of the motor cover using a screwdriver.
■Remove the motor cover.
6. ■Diconnect the cables from the main board.
■All parts of the connector end of the spindle are now accessible.

Assembling
1. ■Assemble the parts of the connector end of the spindle, and connect the cables to the main
board.
2. ■Slide the motor cover over the drive unit. Make sure that the flat cable to the front end is posi-
tioned properly.
■Apply lubricant on the threads of the two screws at the side of the motor cover, and fasten them
using a screwdriver.
■Fasten the four screws at the cover disc using a screwdriver.

3. ■Assemble the circuit board and holder and attach them to the front end of the drive unit using a
screwdriver.
■Connect the flat cable to the circuit board.
4. ■Put the spindle on the work bench, supported by the assembly tool.
■Assemble the start and reverse levers.
■Mount the pins holding the start and reverse levers using a knuckle joint press.
5. ■Hold the spindle using a vise and assembly/disassembly tool.
■Apply lubricant on the threads of the handle, and attach the handle using an adjustable spanner.
6. ■Hold the spindle using a vise and adjustable spanner.
■Apply lubricant on the threads of the handle, and attach the front part using an adjustable span-
ner.

Drive unit
The drive unit is considered a single spare part and is not supposed to be dismantled.
