Atmel ATAN0008: ATAK51001 Quick Start Guide

1. Hardware Requirements

The Atmel®ATAK51001 Car Access Reference Design system requires that an

STK600 AVR®development board be acquired SEPARATELY. All of the other hard-

ware components are shipped complete with this kit including power supply and all

connecting cables. The demo can be run in stand-alone mode or with a PC GUI used

to display more information content. The key fob devices come fully configured but

require a CR2032 coin cell battery be acquired SEPARATELY.

1.1 Atmel ATAK51001 Hardware Setup

There are four antennas that must be connected to the RF receiver, LF Basestation,

and LF Driver boards respectively. Three 10-pin ribbon cables connect the Interface

board to the Atmel STK600. Be sure to correctly align the red stripe for “Pin 1” prop-

erly. Power is supplied from a wall transformer and a Y-cable. This powers both the

Atmel ATAK51001 hardware as well as the Atmel STK600.

1.2 Atmel STK600 Hardware Setup

Two 10-pin ribbon cables are used to connect the LEDs and Switches on the Atmel

STK600. The connection to the PC is provided through a USB to Serial convertor.

This requires a 2-pin cable be connected to the UART pins. Simply connect all the

hardware as shown in Figure 1-1 on page 2 by matching the colors.

2. Software Requirements

The Atmel®ATAK51001 devices are shipped with the proper software already loaded. The

Atmel STK600 must be assembled and the Atmel ATmega2560 requires programming for the

system to be fully functional. The Atmel STK600 board must be configured to VTG = 5V. The

STK600 can program its microcontroller via the ISP or JTAG programming headers. The soft-

ware object files can be downloaded from the Atmel website (http://www.atmel.com/dyn/

products/tools_card.asp?tool_id=17382&category_id=154&family_id=692&subfamily_id=

1949) long with the PC GUI executable. When using the PC GUI please make sure the correct

COM port is selected.

Note: After programming the Atmel STK600, individual key fobs must be “Learned” to the system

before use. See Section 2.2 “Support Functions” on page 3.

guide that can be found on the Atmel website.

2.1 System Operation

The Atmel ATAK51001 provides a complete Car Access Reference System showing three

main functions and three support functions. These three main functions all operate seamlessly

as they would in a real application using correct wireless and wired communication protocols.

Status for all events is shown on the Atmel STK600 LEDs and the PC GUI main screen. The

PC GUI also includes auditory feedback as well as additional view boxes showing the content

of the various messages.

• (RKE) Remote Keyless Entry

• (PEPS) Passive Entry Passive Start

• (IMM) Immobilizer

2.2 Support Functions

Before use each individual key fob must be paired to the vehicle controller. This is made pos-

sible through the “Learn” modes. There are three modes:

• RF - One way transfer of the RKE/PEPS secret key from the fob to the vehicle

• IMMO - Two way programming of new randomly generated secret keys from the vehicle

into the fob for use in both RKE/PEPS and IMM modes

• Clear - Erases all previously learned key fobs

It is possible to associate up to 8 key fobs with this system. The sequence of operation is as

follows

2.3 RKE Learn

1. Press SW5 on STK600 (LED5 should turn ON)

2. Press S3 on key fob (within 10s, while LED5 remains ON)

3. LED5 on Atmel STK600 should blink once. (PC GUI should show a “graduation cap”

icon)

4. Press SW5 to exit if finished or wait 10s

2.4 Immobilizer Learn

1. Place key fob immobilizer coil within 2cm of basestation coil

2. Press SW4 on Atmel®STK600

3. LED5 on Atmel STK600 should blink once. (PC GUI should show a “graduation cap”

icon)

2.5 RKE Operation

RKE is the most basic mode of wireless car access and consists of pressing a button on a key

fob to lock/unlock the vehicle. The following sequence shows this functionality.

1. Press SW1 (LOCK) or SW2 (UNLOCK) on the key fob

2. LED4 <-- --> LED0 on the Atmel STK600 should cycle left or right respectively if the

AES encryption is valid. All other LEDs should be off. (PC GUI should show a Locked

or Unlocked icon and corresponding sound)

2.6 PEPS Operation

PEPS is currently used only on the high-end car access systems and allows the driver to keep

the key fob in their pocket or purse. The user does not need to directly interact with the key fob

to enter/exit or start the vehicle. We show three different sequences of operation for this func-

tionality that are as follows.

2.7 PEPS Unlock

1. Put the key fob within range of the vehicle system (typically 1m)

2. Press SW7 on Atmel STK600

3. LED7 on Atmel STK600 should turn ON and LED4 ? LED0on the STK600 should

cycle left if the AES encryption is valid. (PC GUI should show an Unlocked icon,

green Key Fob, and corresponding sound)

2.8 PEPS Lock (Key Forgotten Inside Vehicle)

1. Put the key fob within range of the vehicle system (typically 1m)

2. Press SW6 on Atmel STK600

3. LED7 on Atmel STK600 should turn ON and LED4 <-- LED0 on the Atmel STK600

should cycle right if the AES encryption is valid. (PC GUI should show an Unlocked

icon, red Key Fob, and corresponding sound)

2.9 PEPS Lock (Key Removed from Vehicle)

1. Put the key fob within range of the vehicle system (typically 3m)

2. Press SW6 on Atmel STK600

3. No change on Atmel STK600 (PC GUI should show an Locked icon and correspond-

ing sound)

2.10 PEPS Start

1. Put the key fob within range of the vehicle system (typically 1m)

2. Press SW0 on Atmel®STK600

3. LED7 on Atmel STK600 should turn ON and LED4 --> LED0 on the Atmel STK600

should cycle right if the AES encryption is valid. (PC GUI should show an Start icon,

green Key Fob, and corresponding sound)

Note: For backup starting where the key fob battery is dead or removed, see step 1 and 3 of the

immobilizer operation.

2.11 Immobilizer Operation

The immobilizer is used to protect the vehicle from starting except when authorized by a valid

user. This can be done with a stand-alone transponder all the way up to the full PEPS system

(Dead battery mode). In order to show just this function there is a special mode built in to the

system.

1. Put the key fob immobilizer coil next to vehicle basestation coil (typically 2cm)

2. Press SW1 on Atmel STK600

3. LED6 on Atmel STK600 should turn ON and LED4 <-- LED0 on the STK600 should

cycle left if the AES encryption is valid. (PC GUI should show an Start icon, Immobi-

lizer Icon, and corresponding sound)
