The instrument illumination (for dials and
needles) t urns on when the ignition is on
and the vehicle lights are tur ned off. As
the daylight fades, the illumination of t he
dials likewise dims automatica lly and w ill
go out comple t ely when t he outsi de light
is very low. This feature is meant t o remind
you t o switch on the headli ght s when out-
side light condit ions become poor.
Engine coolant temperature gauge
The engine coolant gauge (!) ¢ poge 10, fig. 3
only works when the ignition is on. To prevent
damage to your engine, please note the fol-
lowing important points:
Engine cold
If only the LEDsat the bottom of the gauge
turn on, the engine has not reached operating
temperature yet. Avoid hig h engine speeds,
heavy engine loads and heavy throttle applica-
tions .
Normal temp erature
The engine has reached its operating temper-
at ure once the LEDsup to the center of the .,.

tions . The LEDshigher up may turn on when
the engine is under heavy load or the exter ior
temperature is high . This is no need to worry
as long as the . warning light in the instru-
ment cluster does not illuminate . If the LEDs
in the upper area of the display and the indica-
tor light . in the instrument cluster display
turn on, the coolant temperature is too high
¢page 15.
A WARNING
- Always observe the warning in
~ page 228, Working in the engine
compartment, before opening the hood
and checking the engine coolant level.
- Never open the engine hood if you see or
hear steam, or if you see engine coolant
dripping from the engine compartment.
You could burn yourself. Let the engine
cool off first so that you cannot hear or
see any steam or engine coolant.
(D Note
- Mount ing additional lights or accessories
in front of the air inlets reduces the cool-
ing effect of the radiator . At high outside
temperatures or high engine load, the
engine could overheat.
- The front spoiler has been designed to
properly distrib ute the cooling air when
the vehicle is moving. If the spoiler is
damaged, this could reduce the cooling
effect and t he engine could the n over-
heat . Ask your aut horized Aud i dealer for
assistance.
Tachometer (engine rev counter)
The tachometer indicates the engine RPM
(revolutions per minutes).
If engine RPM drops below 1,500, you should
downshift to t he next lower gear. The red area
at the end of the scale indicates maxim um
perm issible engine RPM after the break-in pe-
riod. Before reaching th is area, move these-
lector lever to position "D (Drive)" or ease
your foot off the accelerator pedal.
@ Note
The tachometer needle should only briefly
be in the red zone: you could damage your
engine! The beginning of the red zone var-
ies dependi ng on the engine.
@ For the sake of the environment
Upshifting early savesfuel and reduces en-
gine noise.
Fuel gauge
The fuel gauge only works when the ignition is
on. If the fue l level drops below 4 gallons (15
lite rs), the bottom LED tu rns red and the indi-
cator light tDturns on ¢ page 21. The bot-
tom LED blink s red when the fue l level is very
