3.1 Clean Working Conditions, Guidelines
♦ Always clean the connection locations and the area around
them before loosening.
♦ Clean the transmission and transmission components using
Cleaning Solution - D 009 401 04- .
♦ Use lint-free cloths when cleaning, for example, the “WYPALL
X70/WORKHORSE” cloth made by Kimberly-Clark Professio‐
nal.
♦ Seal all open lines and connections immediately with clean
plugs or caps from the -VAS6122- .

foil or lint-free clothes.
♦ Cover or close unpacked components if repairs cannot be
performed immediately.
♦ Only install clean components: Install replacement parts im‐
mediately after removing them from their packaging.
♦ Protect the disconnected connectors from dirt and moisture
and only connect when they are dry.
3.2 General Information
Transmission
♦ The 8-speed automatic transmission 0BK AWD is equipped
with 8 hydraulically activated forward gears. When the torque
converter lock-up clutch is closed, these forward gears be‐
come manually driven gears through bypassing the torque
converter slip.
♦ A special feature of the 0BK transmission is the position of the
front final drive (front axle differential with flange shafts) in front
of the torque converter. An even distribution of the weight be‐
tween the front and rear axles is attained.
Torque Converter
The torque converter is equipped with a slip-controlled torque
converter lock-up clutch. Due to the new design of this transmis‐
sion, the torque converter is located behind the front final drive.
Mechatronic
The Mechatronic combines the following components as a com‐
plete synchronized unit:
♦ Transmission Control Module - J217- , hydraulic control
♦ The sensors and actuators
The Mechatronic unit is installed in the transmission in the area
of the ATF pan.
Transmission Control Module - J217-
The control module is a part of the Mechatronic unit in the trans‐
mission.

Determining the driving situation and driving resistance depend‐
ent shift point occurs automatically.
Advantages:
♦ Usage-based shifting
♦ Maximum engine output is always available
♦ Individual adaptation of shift points in all driving situations
♦ Gear shift points are infinitely variable
On Board Diagnostics (OBD)
Use “Guided Fault Finding” to determine the exact cause of dam‐
age before servicing the automatic transmission.
Use the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester to perform “Guided Fault Find‐
ing”
Shift Point Changes on Inclines and Declines
When driving on inclines or declines, gears are automatically se‐
lected using additional shift characteristic maps. The selection is
based on accelerator pedal position and vehicle speed.
♦ The gear change map for extreme uphill stretches is matched
to engine output
♦ The gear change map for extreme downhill stretches is match‐
ed to the braking effect of the engine.
♦ By selecting a gear directly using tiptronic, the driver can use
the engine braking effect with a specific gear engaged, for ex‐
ample when driving downhill with a trailer.
3.3 General Repair Information
The maximum possible care and cleanliness and proper tools are
essential to ensure satisfactory and successful transmission re‐
pairs. The usual basic safety precautions also, naturally apply
when carrying out vehicle repairs.
A number of generally valid instructions governing the various re‐
pair procedures - which used to be repeated several times
throughout the Manual - are summarized here and apply to this
Manual.
Guided Fault Finding, On Board Diagnostics (OBD) and Test In‐
struments
♦ Before servicing the transmission, determine as best as pos‐
sible the cause of the fault using the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester
in the mode Guided Fault Finding , Vehicle Self-Diag-
nosis and Test Instruments .
Oil, Environment and Disposal Regulations
♦ Handle ATF, axle oil and other fluids with care.
♦ Dispose of the drained fluids properly.
♦ Follow the legal environmental and disposal regulations.
♦ Follow the information provided on oil packaging.
Special Tools and Equipment
For a complete list of special tools used. Refer to Special Tools
and Workshop Equipment.
Transmission
♦ Follow the rules for clean working conditions when working on
the transmission. Refer to
⇒ “3.1 Clean Working Conditions, Guidelines”, page 5 .

♦ Do not run the engine or tow the vehicle when the center dif‐
ferential housing is removed or when there is no ATF.
♦ Check the following fluid levels after installation and, if neces‐
sary, fill: ATF in transmission (Refer to
⇒ “6.2 ATF Level, Checking”, page 110 ), and gear oil in
transmission (Refer to ⇒ “2 Gear Oil”, page 150 ). Oil Capacity
(Refer to ⇒ “4.1 Capacities”, page 9 ) and specification.
Refer to Parts Catalog.
O-rings, Shaft Seals, Seals
♦ O-rings, shaft seals and seals must be replaced.
♦ After removing gaskets, examine contact surface on housing/
shaft for burr resulting from removal or for other signs of dam‐
age.
♦ Thoroughly clean housing joint surfaces before assembling.
♦ To install, thinly coat shaft seals along outer circumference
and on sealing lip with ATF.
♦ Coat O-rings with ATF before inserting to prevent crushing
rings during installation.
♦ Only use approved ATF in the ATF area. Other types of lubri‐
cation cause faults to occur in the transmission hydraulics.
♦ The open side on the shaft seals faces the fluid to be sealed
off.
♦ Press in new shaft seal, so that the sealing lip does not run on
the same point as the sealing lip of the old shaft seal (use
insertion depth tolerances).
♦ Check the following fluid levels after installation and, if neces‐
sary, fill: ATF in transmission (Refer to
⇒ “6.2 ATF Level, Checking”, page 110 ), or gear oil in trans‐
mission (Refer to ⇒ “2 Gear Oil”, page 150 ). Oil Capacity
(Refer to ⇒ “4.1 Capacities”, page 9 ) and specification.
Refer to Parts Catalog.
Bolts and Nuts
♦ Loosen the bolts opposite the tightening sequence.
♦ Nuts and bolts which secure covers and housings should be
tightened in steps according to the specified tightening se‐
quence and method.
♦ Nuts and bolts which secure covers and housings should be
loosened and tightened crosswise in stages if no tightening
sequence is specified.
♦ Replace the self-locking nuts and bolts.
♦ Clean the threads on bolts that were installed with locking
compound. After doing that, install the bolts with Locking Com‐
pound - AMV 185 101 A1- .
♦ Threaded holes, in which self-locking bolts or bolts with locking
compound were installed, must be cleaned (for example with
a thread tap). Otherwise, there is a risk that the bolts may
shear off when installing again.
♦ The tightening specifications stated apply to non-oiled nuts
and bolts.
Fasteners
♦ Do not overstretch the circlips.
♦ Replace damaged or stretched circlips.
♦ The circlips must fit completely inside the groove.

Bearings
♦ Install needle bearings with lettered side (thicker metal) racing
the fitting tool.
♦ Insert bearing with axle oil or ATF, depending on installation
location.
♦ Do not interchange the outer or inner races for the same size
bearings.
♦ Always replace the tapered roller bearings on one shaft to‐
gether and use new bearings from a single manufacturer.
Adjusting Shims
♦ Measure the shims at several locations with a micrometer.
Tolerance variations make it possible to find the exact shim
thickness required.
♦ Check for burrs and damage. Only install flawless shims.
3.4 Contact Corrosion
Contact corrosion can occur if non-approved fasteners (bolts,
nuts, washers, etc.) are used.
For this reason, only fasteners with a special surface coating may
be installed.
In addition, rubber or plastic parts and adhesive are made of ma‐
terials that do not conduct electricity.
If you are not sure about the suitability of parts, then use new
parts. Refer to the Parts Catalog.
Note
♦
Original replacement parts are recommended because they
have been tested.
♦
It is recommended to use Audi accessories.
♦
Damage resulting from contact corrosion is not covered by the
warranty.
