Engine coolant temperature gauge
The engine coolant ga uge ¢ page 10, fig. 3 CD
only works when t he ignition is on. To prevent
damage to your engine, please note the follow-
ing important points :
Engine cold
If the need le is at or close to the bottom of the
gauge, the engine has not yet reached its operat -
ing temperature. Avoid high engine speeds,
heavy engine loads, and heavy thrott le applica-
tions .
Normal temperature
When the engine has reached its operating tem-
perature, the needle will move to the middle of
the ga uge and rema in there. If the engine is
working hard at high outs ide temperatures, t he
needle may move higher on the gauge. This is not
a cause for concern as long as the . warning
light in the inst rumen t cluste r display does not il-
luminat e. If the . warning light in the inst ru-
ment cluster disp lay flashes, th is can mean one
of two th ings : eith er the coolan t temperature is
too high, or t he coolant level is t oo low

A WARNING
- Always observe the warning in¢ page 195,
before opening the hood and checking the
engine coolant level.
- Never open the engine hood if you seeor
hear steam, or if you see engine coolant
dripping from the engine compartment. You
could burn yourself. Let the engine cool off
first so that you cannot hear or seeany
steam or engine coolant.
0 Note
- Mount ing additional lights or accessories in
front of the air inlets reduces the cooling ef-
fect of the radiator. At high outside temper-
atures or high engine load, the engine could
overheat.
- Thefront spoiler has been designed to prop-
erly distribute the cooling air when the vehi-
cle is moving. If the spoiler is damaged, this
could reduce the cooling effect and the en-
gine could then overheat. Askyour author-
ized Audi dealer for assistance.
Tachometer (engine revcounter)
Thetachometer indicates the engine RPM(revo-
lutions per minutes).
If engine RPMdrops below 1,500, you should
downshift to the next lower gear. The red area at
the end of the scale indicates maximum permis-
sible engine RPMafter the break-in period. Be-
fore reaching th is area, move the selector lever to
position D/Sor easeyour foot off the accelerator
pedal.
(D Note
The tachometer needle @ ¢ page 10, fig. 3
should only briefly be in the red zone: you
could damage your engine! The beginning of
the red zone varies depending on the engine.
@ Forthe sake of the environment
Upshift ing early savesfuel and reduces engine
noise.
